Summer evening shopping A LATE night shopping event in Birstall has been hailed a success. Organised by Birstall Business Cooperative (BBC) it aimed to promote local shops and businesses, with 19 staying open between 5 and 8pm on Tuesday, June 7. “We were very pleased with how it was received and the number of people that attended the event to support the local shops and businesses“ said BBC spokeswoman Shona Rattray. There was a row of stalls outside Barclays bank and a display of vintage cars. “We invited Anglo American car hire to attend with two of their vintage vehicles. RT’s Café had organised an Italian themed evening for their late night opening and were fully booked for the night. A number of the shops put on special offers, or arranged for extra products to be available for the evening. “The business owners received a number of comments throughout the evening from customers wanting to know when this type of event would be held again, and requests for more stall holders the next time it is arranged” said Shona. Lorraine Moore, owner of Silly Prices discount store on Hannah Parade, said: “The event definitely brought different customers in to me. People who work and don’t manage to get into the village because we are closed.” Gill Bolton, owner of New World Florist, said: “The vintage cars brought that extra focus for people walking around. so it was a great opportunity to support the local shops’. ” Charlotte Foy, Co-Founder of Birstall Business Co-operative, attended the event with her family. She said: “There was a super atmosphere and the whole family enjoyed it. There was a great community feel and the shops had made a great deal of effort to attract new customers with offers and activities especially.

“Now we know the first event was well received, we will take note of the feedback and maybe organise another one sometime in early September” BBC are also still working on a scheme to provide CCTV along Sibson Road, which they feel is an important project for the village. They have raised £6625 in pledges so far, and would like the support of Birstall Parish Council to help take the project forward. Charlotte

This would mean Birstall Parish Council paying for the monitoring of the cameras and the general upkeep in the future. “We are hoping that the Parish Council will arrange a meeting in July to discuss this, and then if this is agreed we can go full steam ahead and apply for the grants, and arrange our fundraising events. We cannot do this until we know the project can proceed long term. We are really keen to get the cameras installed before Christmas, when the shops have previously experienced more crime, but cannot proceed further until we know if Birstall Parish Council will support the project.” If anyone wishes to get involved with Birstall Business Co-operative, or show support for the Sibson Road CCTV project please message the ShopLocalBirstall facebook page or contact Charlotte at the White Horse pub.

An academy spokesman said: “Joe has consistently shown the qualities that Mr Elkington displayed throughout his life. This past year Joe has matured beyond belief and it’s been a joy to watch him grow and develop. He has supported the PE department in numerous ways from helping run extracurricular teams and offering his assistance in GCSE PE lessons. Joe has faced adversity, embraced it and has come out stronger than he was before and was therefore a deserved winner for this remarkable award.” Other winners

Exciting summer at youth café

Cricket Corner UNAVAILABILITY OF players has hit the 1stXI hard recently, with three consecutive defeats albeit to very good sides.

BIRSTALL YOUTH Café is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and youth workers say they have an exciting summer planned. The café is a drop-in youth facility located in the pavilion in the centre of the School Lane playing fields, for young people aged 8-11. It is provided by Bir-

There is a greenhouse and young people have been growing tomatoes and cress and a kitchen area where they are taught how to prepare healthy food. PCSO Mark Butler is a regular visitor and always takes part in the activities and recently there was a visit by the Fire Service who brought a fire truck - fire-fighters answered questions about fire safety. A spokesperson said: “Weather permitting we aim to get the children out-

Carl Gunns came along to deliver a boxing session along with a group from his gym and the children relished this experience.” The Birstall Youth Café is open Monday and Wednesday from 5.30-8pm. For more information call in or contact Birstall Parish Council.

Taking wickets has not been a problem but scoring runs most definitely has, with the team making less then a hundred on three occasions. No such problem for the 2ndXI where four victories from five matches sees the team in a healthy league position. Captain George Ager recently made his maiden 50 to continue his good start to the season with both bat and ball. Gin night out A GIN expert led an enthusiastic audience on a world tour of gin at the White Horse’s first ever Gin Night. Carl Hawkins, AKA ‘the Gintleman’, entertained and informed as gins from around the world were tasted and graded including Malfy from Italy, Roku from Japan, Nordes from Spain, Boodles Mulberry gin from the UK and Four Pillars Shiraz Gin from Australia.

“The evening was a great success and we hope to repeat it with a different gin selection later in the year” said James Foy from the White Horse, who have added the most popular gins to their bar. The event was staged in the pub’s new outdoor garden bar dining area which will host their next summer event, an American style BBQ on July 4, with wines, craft beers and bourbon from the USA to taste.

Caring can be a positive experience but can also be emotionally and physically challenging. Many older carers have long-term health problems or a disability themselves. ‘Caring for someone’ contains information and advice for everyone, regardless of how much care they provide, including how to apply for a carer’s assessment, which can assess the impact of a caring role on your wellbeing. ‘Caring for someone’ is free to order and download from www.independentage.org/caring-forsomeone, or can be ordered for free by calling 0800 319 6789. Every day, another 6,000 people take on a caring responsibility and, by 2037, it's anticipated that the number of carers in the UK will increase to 9 million. To coincide with Carers Week 2018, Independent Age, the older people’s charity, has launched a new, free advice guide to help people identify as carers, and access the practical, financial and emotional support available to them. The guide, called ‘Caring for someone: How to get the support you need’, is suitable for anyone who might be a carer. It explains carers rights, and the

May I remind cyclists either riding on the foot, the shared cycleways or even Watermead, to actually use the bell (as required by law) when approaching pedestrians or dog walkers particularly from behind. Stopping and shouting, if they don't hear/see you, is a trait learnt from motorists! I've even been thanked when I ring my bell behind walkers, so it can be appreciated and takes little effort to do. Norman Cutting. (silly old duffer peddling his tricycle

around 'cause he falls off bicycles!) Editor’s note: Is it the law to have a bell on a bicycle? No – it’s not a legal requirement. Bikes at the point of sale have to be fitted with bells, but there is no law saying they must be fitted to bicycles no longer on shop display. The Highway Code does not stipulate that bells must be used, but rather suggests that cyclists ‘be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially sighted pedestrians, letting them know you are there when necessary, for example by ringing your bell.’ Any other ‘audible warning device’, such as a whistle or the human voice would do.

Ultrasound scanner for Glenfield hospital SUPPORTERS OF local cancer charity Birstall BAGs have raised funds for a state of the art ultrasound scanner for the respiratory medicine department at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. The £14,500 donation from BAGs funded an ultrasound scanner that will be used by pleural patients on Ward 29 and in the outpatients’ pleural clinic. Our programme does jump from the sublime to the 'slightly bizarre', as at our next meeting on July 9 we will be given a talk and demonstration on the History and fitting of Bras, by Brenda Lund. Looking back to what our grandmothers and mothers had to wear, and long before that, even, it sounds as if it will be quite fascinating, and will bring us up to date (in the lingerie department, that is). The Baldwin Trust narrow-boats is our chosen charity for this year, and we were very interested to hear about the boats and their benefits, particularly for disabled users, at our annual service in St. James. Money that we raise will be put towards providing a defibrillator for one of the boats. We are having 'A Grand Day Out' in August (see what I mean about 'from the sublime, etc?) and will be visiting the town of Stamford on their market day, which promises to be colourful and lively with lots of lovely grub. If you would like to join in the general jollity, please come to the Village Hall, School Lane, on the second Monday of each month, where you will be made most welcome.

The ultrasound machine is portable which means that it can easily be used at the bedside and helps us to identify if a patient has a pleural effusion - a collection of fluid in the lining of the lung - or not. The image that the scanner provides is a live image and helps us to make decisions

swiftly in relation to the patient’s management which means, if they need treatment, we can arrange it faster. “In addition, if a patient requires a pleural procedure, the ultrasound ensures that we are practising as safely as possible by being guided by the images.” Emma Shaw from Birstall BAGs said: “We were delighted to be able to fund the new scanner. We’d like to thank our supporters for their efforts in fundraising and attending our events – they have

made this donation possible.” Birstall BAGs operates in and around Birstall and Leicestershire and seeks to bring people together to raise funds to support cancer services used by the local community. The charity also takes every opportunity to raise the profile of cancer, particularly with regard to the signs and symptoms, recognising that early diagnosis of cancer really can save lives. Birstall BAGs works with other local charities to provide services that support members of the local community who are living with a diagnosis of cancer.

It’s worth all the effort we put in when you see the kids enjoying their football.” the experience for regular players as well as attracting new players to the game. Many of the new state-of-the-art facilities will serve to strengthen the connection between professional football clubs and their local communities, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through the professional clubs’ community trusts’ outreach work. Kevin Glover, Chair of Birstall United JFC, said: “We firmly believe that the improved facilities will help us to cement our position in the local community for years to come. Our annual events, including the tournament and Bonfire

night, have become increasingly popular. We can now be proud of our Meadow Lane site and look to host more of these.” Jon Sutton, the club’s Funding Officer, said: “We’re hugely grateful to the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, and also to other local funders including the Edith Murphy Trust, Birstall Parish Council and Charnwood Borough Council. We’ve even had Birstall locals making one-off donations. And this is just the start: we need to make further improvements to the site, so our fundraising efforts will continue. For example, we’re looking to have a ‘Wall of Fame’ in the new clubhouse.” Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Grassroots sport plays an important role in communities across the UK, creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. That is why I am delighted that Birstall United Juniors FC is set to open their state-of-the-art clubhouse on Meadow Lane, thanks to investment from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund. “Continuing to improve access to highquality facilities like this one is a key aim for the Premier League, The FA and the Government. Delivered by the Football Foundation, their funding supports projects for clubs and organisations all over the country and is helping to boost the number of people benefiting from sport through better facilities. “Grassroots football provides so many benefits for members of the community, not least of which is the opportunity to enjoy themselves. Love for our national game, something that can be found across the country, is an integral part of what drives the Foundation and its Funding Partners to keep increasing the standards and quality of our facilities.”

the project. The club worked alongside the Football Foundation and Leicestershire FA to compile a five-year Football Development Plan, which is a vision of how sport will be played on site with an emphasis on increasing participation. It is predicted that the upgrade project will result in a 67% boost to overall football participation on-site, now that the club will be better supported by its facilities. Birstall United JFC expect to introduce a total of 10 new teams, taking their total to 25, which will include establishing new sides in the Under-18 age bracket. The club previously had both female sides and disability football teams, which eventually had to move on due to inadequate changing provision. We know that our tournament has an impact upon the surrounding roads, but we’re doing all we can to minimise this and consider suitable alternatives. If someone has concerns on the weekend we always invite them in to see what the event is all about. “So many kids are enjoying themselves

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on June 11. Mark Bollard and Geoff Cassidy were co-opted to fill two vacancies on the council. A member of the public commented that the condition of the cemetery was a disgrace. Chair Ann Marshall agreed and said the Estates Team had been working on it all day today and would stay on site until the problems were put right.. PCSO Mark Butler reported there had been three burglaries – on Loughborough Road, Tempest Road and Bramley Road. One of the properties had left their front door unlocked. Thefts of meat from local supermarkets has been reported and the suspect is a recently released offender,. PCSO Butler reported that speed

Cedars academy: new leaders THE HEAD teacher at the Cedars Academy will be leaving the school at the end of the academic year. Jason Smith will be taking up the role of Principal at Judgemeadow Community College, which is currently in Special Measures. Mr Smith joined Longslade 15 years ago and has been head teacher since 2014, leading the school out of Special checks had been carried out in Wanlip. 160 vehicles were checked and the highest measured speed was 41mph. A request has been received from the family of the boy killed following the collision with a vehicle on the A6, that a memorial of some kind be placed on the School Lane playing field. It was agreed to meet with the family to discuss the possibilities. The council considered the response it has received to a consultation of households who live next to the proposed site for the memorial bench on Allington Drive. It was agreed to apply to the County Council for a licence to occupy the site and then consult further on a detailed scheme. It was reported that an agreement has been reached with Jelson to use part of the Hallam fields car park as a compound while the construction of the Hallam Fields community hall takes place. Work on progressing the build can now start. It was reported that the council has complained to the County Council about the poor quality of the grass cutting within the parish. A complaint from a resident about overhanging branches on Greengate Lane had been resolved after the parish clerk wrote to the homeowner who subsequently cut them back. It was reported that an issue raised by the public at the council surgery on June 2 was litter on the Hallam fields estate. The parish council has litter picking equipment that can be made available to anyone who wishes to organise a community litter pick. Residents can contact the parish council office to arrange. Comment was made that the recent football tournament on Meadow Lane had caused traffic chaos in the area. PCSO Butler said club officials had done the best they could to marshal the traffic and that a possibility for next year was to obtain permission for a one-way restriction.

Measures and through the process of merging with Stonehill High School. He said: “This has not been an easy decision but I believe that my experience working with Cedars should now benefit another school and that, given the progress made and the support given by Lionheart Academies Trust, the school and its pupils will continue to grow, develop and be the school our community deserves.” The Cedars Academy is now rated a

good school by Ofsted. A new leadership structure has been put in place which will become effective on September 1 when the Martin High School Anstey joins the Lionheart Academy Trust, of which the Cedars is a part. Mrs Laura Sanchez will be Executive Principal, working across the Cedars and the Martin High School . Dr Maher Rashid has been appointed Associate Principal at the Cedars. He has a PhD in Mathematical Physics and was head of Mathematics before becoming a senior leader – he is currently Deputy Head at the King’s School in Pontefract. Success at new venue for HATS THEIR FIRST performance in a different venue brought out a new audience to enjoy the latest production from Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS). HATS have moved from Highcliffe School to Birstall Social Club as spokeswoman Sue Withers explains: “While we were anxious to keep our regular audience members, we were also hoping that the move would bring new people to watch our performances. “Well, what can I say, what a fabulous turnout we had. Old and new both, it was a tremendous success. Thank you to our regular audience and a big welcome to our new audience members.” The performance of ‘What a Mix Up’ consisted of two comedy plays. Sue said: “The complicated plot of the first play, ‘Two Weddings and a Conference’ kept the audience on their toes, working out who was married to who, who had previously been married to who, who was still married to who and who wanted to be married to who. Well, despite the confusion, our audience were quick and soon able to identify the characters. It was funny, cleverly written and held the audience attention throughout. “The second play ‘B&B’ was an easy to

follow hilariously comedic bunch of characters visiting a newly established B&B. I am sure that the audience have probably come across some similarly ‘unique’ characters in their real lives, or maybe they recognised themselves.” Reviews on facebook included: “As always the cast were on form and gave an excellent performance … the new venue was great, parking close by and it also has a bar so we were able to get refreshments. Thank you for another wonderful evening of fun and laughter. “It was so good, full of laughs, first time I have ever been to see their performances.” Sue said: “HATS would like to thank you all for supporting us, it really is all worth it when we see you all smiling and know that you have had a good time. “In addition we would like to thank our new hosts at the Birstall Social Club for welcoming us to their venue and working with us to produce this successful show.” HATS pantomime usually takes place in November but will now be performed on January 10, 11 & 12, 2019.

Rothley bakery proves honesty pays A SELF-SERVICE bakery that depends on the honesty of its customers has opened in Rothley. The Honest Baker is the brainchild of local businessman Gavin Taylor, who runs Gavin Taylor Hair on Fowke Street. The bakery is at the rear of the salon. “I’m a foodie, food is a passion, and I can’t get this sort of thing anywhere” he said, standing inside his shop and gesturing towards an array of breads, tarts, scones and savouries. There is no sales assistant or cash register in sight, because the store relies on the honesty of its patrons to pay before leaving.

“It’s a social experiment” says Gavin. “I wanted to prove people wrong, like my mum who said people would just steal the bread. No – that’s not right, most people are honest”. Having been open for three months now, Gavin’s faith in the honesty of his customers has been proved right. Customers register

Garden waste bins GARDEN WASTE bins which are not displaying valid subscription stickers will be removed from June 25. Charnwood Borough Council, which runs the scheme, says a number of properties are still putting bins out to be emptied despite not paying for the service. The Council says checking for valid subscriptions and issuing reminders and warnings adds time to the rounds and therefore taking away the bins will make the service more efficient for those who are paying for it. Matt Bradford, head of cleansing at the Council, said: “The garden waste scheme is very popular and we have more than 35,000 subscriptions. “However, there are several hundred properties which consistently leave out the bins despite not having a valid subscription and being issued with various reminders and warnings. “This can have an impact on the quality of the service and we think the best way to tackle this is to simply take the bins away. “The bins are the property of the Council and we will simply be removing bins which are put out for emptying but do not have a valid subscription.” Last year the Council introduced a permit scheme which means garden waste bins need to display a sticker to prove the service has been paid for. If the sticker is not displayed, the bin will not be emptied. From June 25, any bins which are left out and do not have valid subscriptions will be taken away. A letter will be delivered to the property explaining what has happened. Anyone wanting more information or to subscribe to the garden waste service should visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/gardenwaste

NHW news

& crime report Crime update We have had a total of 42 crimes reported in May, which is 17 less than April when we had 59. This is obviously positive and we hope that this downward trend continues. We have had 3 house burglaries May and we have only had three reports of vehicles being broken into, which is down from 18 last month. Please continue to make sure that you are locking your cars at night and closing the windows as it’s easy to forget to do this, especially in the warm weather when you’ve had them all open. Theft of fuel from the petrol station continues to be an issue with a total of eight reports this month. We are reviewing all these reports to see if there are any lines of enquiry however more often than not the vehicles are using false or stolen number plates meaning that the offenders are difficult to identify and track down. Aside from this there are no other crime trends to report. We have had two reports of vehicles being stolen and eight reports of assault, however several of these related to the same incident where one person assaulted a number of others, as opposed to being individual incidents. For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Crime Prevention Advice We have recently had a report about a

motorbike being stolen and we do get other reports fairly regularly. Take these easy steps to avoid yours being stolen. • Always secure your bike with a good quality lock, passing it through the wheels and securing it to a ground anchor so that it can’t be dragged or wheeled away. • If you have a garage, make some space and keep it secured inside! • Fit an alarm so that it activates if the bike is moved or interfered with. • Keep a record of the frame / vin number so that it can be identified if stolen & recovered. Neighbourhood update This month we have conducted some speed checks on Rectory Road in Wanlip following complaints about vehicles speeding through the village. In just over an hour we had almost 160 vehicles through the site & I’m pleased to report that the vast majority of drivers were adhering to the speed limit. One driver was issued with a verbal warning for travelling at 37mph and another was reported after he was caught travelling at 41mph. We will continue to conduct checks as and when we can as we are aware that many people are concerned about speeding drivers in the area. We also attended the Wanlip Parish meeting where we gave a crime prevention talk to around 30 residents following a spate of incidents in the village last month. This was well received and will hopefully prevent other residents of the village from being targeted. Meet your local police team Sibson Road Beat Office. Saturday 21st July (10am – 12pm). Space Park Leicester will carry out research in Space and Earth Observation, provide training for the space scientists of the future and contribute to growth in the national space economy. When completed, the estimated benefits to the regional economy are £850 million and 2,500 jobs. Set within a landscaped setting of trees, planting and wildlife ponds, the long term vision for the site includes buildings designed for research and innovation; industrial-academic co-working; and teaching and learning. A stateof-the-art facility would also allow for the assembling and testing of satellites. The location, next to the National Space Centre, will allow greater interaction

to regenerate this currently unused site. “This is a huge opportunity to make Leicester the UK capital of space-related research, innovation and skills development.” Professor Martin Barstow, University of Leicester pro-vice chancellor for strategic science projects, added: “Space Park Leicester will be a world-leading space research and innovation facility, helping to train the space scientists of the future and contributing to economic growth in the region and nationally.” The August issue of

Charity offers new assistant service INCREASING NUMBERS of older people have been asking Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to take them out rather than provide support within the home - so much so the charity has decided to launch a Personal Assistant Service. Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Mr Anthony Donovan, said: “As a charity we are all about helping people to stay independent for as long as possible and supporting them in the way that they direct us to. In response to need, the Personal Assistant service will bring a new dimension to

this work and allow people to benefit from the flexibility it can offer but without needing to take on the extra paperwork, cost and time implications of employing someone.” He added: “Having a Personal Assistant is a tried and tested way of getting flexible and reliable support for adults with physical and mental issues or those just needing a helping hand as they get older. Age UK has taken this concept and removed the challenges that employing your own Personal Assistant can bring, including candidate vetting and interviewing, payroll and contracts. This means that having a Personal Assistant is now straightforward, easy and effective with

the complexity taken away and managed by Age UK.” The Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland Personal Assistants will be able to help with whatever is needed either at home or in the community. Their range of support will include help with phone calls, bill payment and correspondence, help with domestic tasks and household management and help to attend community activities, excursions, medical appointments and shopping. Mr Donovan said: “Age UK’s trained staff have the skills, personal qualities, time and ability to respond to the needs of their clients flexibly, thoughtfully and with empathy. The service is geared to respond well to a mixed range of tasks which is led by and responsive to what the individual wants help with on any given day.” The service is not free but Age UK say their charges are competitive and affordable. The service is always the same price per hour, whether your Personal Assistant is ironing clothes or playing board games, and there are no hidden costs. Anyone wishing to explore using a Personal Assistant to support their independence can contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 299 2266. More information about the service can be found on www.ageukleics.org.uk

Events remember Great War A SERIES of poignant events are planned in Charnwood to mark 100 years since the end of World War One. Charnwood Borough Council is co-ordinating and supporting the events on Sunday November 11, 2018 and is calling on residents to get involved. One of the focal points will be a full-size replica warhorse, covered with poppies made by local children, which will make a journey from Charnwood Museum to the town centre. There will also be events in Loughborough town centre, including a live showcase plus a big screen, a tea dance at Loughborough Town Hall as well as the annual Remembrance Day parade ending with a service at the Carillon where thousands of poppies will cascade from the top.

A new Charnwood Heritage Plaque will also be unveiled in the Market Place as a lasting reminder of the troops who gathered there before heading off for the Great War. A beacon will also be lit in Queen’s Park. The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Christine Harris, said: “We shall never forget the sacrifices made by previous generations to ensure we retained our freedom. “As this year marks 100 years since the end of the Great War we are planning Pic: Songster pictured in 1934 a series of events which we believe will be a fitting tribute to those who gave many trials and tribulations and retheir lives.” ceived several medals for his bravery. Richard Hallam have been led by the Friends of Belgrave Cemetery, after it had been laid flat on the ground for several years for safety reasons. History of Bradgate Park revealed MEMBERS OF the public are invited to learn about the latest archaeological discoveries being made by the University of Leicester’s Archaeology fieldschool during a free family Open Day at Bradgate Park on Sunday 1 July between 11am – 4pm Archaeologists from the University of Leicester will be returning to Bradgate Park from the end of May until the beginning of July with their fourth season of excavations. Aiming to uncover the hidden history of this popular attraction, the Bradgate Park Fieldschool is a five-year programme of research (2015-2019). Project co-director, Dr Richard Thomas from the University of Leicester’s School of Archaeology and Ancient History, explained: “Excavations over the last three years have shown that people have been coming to Bradgate Park for a very long time. We now have evidence for Ice Age hunting (c. 14,500 years ago), Mesolithic hunting (c. 6000-9000 years ago), Bronze Age occupation, and a 13th-14th

century hunting lodge. “Our most surprising find, however, has been the discovery of buildings predating the brick structures of Bradgate House. While Bradgate House is such an iconic site, very little is known about the standing structure and its date. Our evidence suggests that the home of Lady Jane Grey may have looked very different from what we see today. “Our fourth season of excavations will help us to better understand the changing appearance of Bradgate House. We will also be exploring a large rectangular building to the south of Bradgate House, which is visible in aerial photographs and 18th-century drawings. We

think that this could be a stable block, built for the visit of King William III, or a gatehouse.” The fieldschool includes a programme of outreach delivered to primary and secondary schools enabling them to visit the excavations and take part in hands-on activities. Outreach Officer, Debbie Miles-Williams from the University of Leicester’s School of Archaeology and Ancient History, said: “The outreach programme is designed to raise awareness of our research and inspire young and old to engage with their local heritage and archaeology.” Members of the public who attend

the Open Day will be given the opportunity to: • Speak to the archaeologists involved in the excavations and see some of the objects that have been found • Take a site tour • Discover treasure in dig boxes • Meet a medieval knight and learn about medieval cooking • Meet the Victorian lady and her hawk • Watch medieval tile making, building techniques, weaving demonstrations • See the flint knapper and make coil pots and arrowheads • Handle prehistoric tools • Watch spinners working Advertise in

THE BIRSTALL POST JULY 2018

News from the churches Goodness, Tempus really does Fugit, doesn't it? We are now half-way through the year and trying to make the time stretch to accommodate all we would like to do and remember all that we have done! Last week (June 4-8) saw a coachload of parishioners embark on the Parish holiday from outside Birstall Social Club. We were bound for Littlecote House, Berkshire. From being a haunt of Henry VIII it has come through the centuries and morphed into a 'Warner Leisure Hotel'. It is very beautiful and stands in acres of well-kept gardens. (I do wonder what His Majesty would think of it now, with its swimming pool, spa and rifle shooting - he would probably approve of the archery!) Surrounded by beauty, good company and good food, we returned home with lovely memories of being very well looked after. Whilst we were away, our churches at home must carry on, of course, with Bible study and prayer meetings plus the normal services, and also with planning future events such as the Summer Fayre to be held at St. James. The recent May Fayre in Wanlip this year raised £730, so bugs and beetles will be sent packing very soon from the floor in the Village Hall. It has been a busy time for the St. James Monday Group, too, and on a rare, lovely summer's evening, members enjoyed an exceptional, delicious supper at the Harrison's house in Rothley. The next meeting (July 9) which will be in Birstall Village Hall will have a talk by Brenda Lund on the history and the fitting of bras (as you can see, it is a very varied programme). Our Rector, Rev. Vince Jupp, will soon be leading classes for Confirmation, starting on 13th September at the Rectory. If you would like to be Baptised and/or Confirmed, please call in to the Church for further information, or contact Vince on 0116 2674517 (e-mail vincejupp@btinternet.com ). You may be interested to know that we now have Wi-Fi in St. James. Umm...good! Vaguely connected to hi-tech 'stuff' there are, at times during the year, training given on the proper use of microphones and how to read aloud in church. If you feel you are a budding announcer and reader, this is your opportunity to learn how it works! A retreat has been booked at Launde Abbey from 1st-3rd October, which will be led by Margaret Bowers, a retired Salvation Army Officer. Given the lovely atmosphere and surroundings of Launde Abbey this retreat should be a real treat.

If you wish to know more about any of the activities taking place in St. James of St. Nicholas, please call in for information. You can, of course, just come in for some quiet time away from the noise and bustle of streets and shops. We are always pleased to see you - there is also a water bowl for your dog (should you have one). Correction Old Nick's Coffe Shop takes place at Wanlip on the the third Tuesday of the month (not the second as previously advertised) From Birstall Parish Churches

Cyclist Dave Moves On A familiar face, with his bicycle, at Birstall Methodist Church, is Rev Dave Warnock. He has been in the (old) Leicester North Circuit for many years. As part of the itinerant ministry of the Methodist Church, Dave Warnock will leave in August for his new Circuit at Wythenshawe, South Manchester. His last service in Birstall will be on Sunday July 1. There is a Circuit farewell service, followed by a Barbecue at 6pm at Syston Methodist Church on July 29. On Friday August 24 at 7.30 the Circuit will welcome two new ministers, Revd Derek McLean who will have pastoral oversight of Oadby and Great Glen, and a Probationer Daniel Yovan who will be based at Syston. Church Maintenance Week In the week commencing Monday July 16, the whole premises at Birstall Methodist Church will be closed for annual maintenance week. It does mean that the coffee shop will also be closed. John (2675128) is looking for volunteers to help, whether for a week, a day, or just an hour. Most jobs this year will be cleaning. There are no significant painting jobs. Mary’s Meals Mary’s Meals provides one good meal to some of the world’s poorest children every school day. The organisation is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, who brought up her own child in poverty. Mary’s Meals respects, and reaches out to people of all faiths and of none. Birstall Methodist Church are collecting items for this valued and worthwhile organisation. Items that can be accepted are limited to: backpack/school bag, spoon (preferably metal), Exercise book/notepad, pencils/pens/crayons, eraser, ruler, sharpener, pencil case, shorts/skirt t shirt or dress, flip flops or sandals, small ball (e.g. tennis ball) soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel. Please note the organisation is unable to accept anything that is not on this list.

Flower Festival At Syston If your Birstall Post is delivered on time, you might be ‘just in time’ to visit the Flower Festival at Syston Methodist Church. Open on Saturday June 30 10am to 4pm and on Sunday July 1, 12 noon to 4pm. The theme is ‘Our Favourite Hymns’. From Birstall Methodist Church

Sunday Services We will be meeting on the first three Sundays in July in Room PT1, The Palmer Tomkinson Centre, The Cedars Academy, Wanlip Lane, Birstall (LE4 4GH) from 10.45am and Graham Bunkall will be continuing our studies from John’s Gospel. There is a Sunday School available for children during the second half of the service. You are most welcome to join us. Other services You may find yourself unable to attend a service in Birstall, so here are some alternatives. If going to another part of the country, you may find it helpful to consult the Holiday Churches List published by Evangelical Times – as a supplement to the June edition of their paper or via their website at: http://churches.evangelical-times.org If you would like to enjoy a full service,

then The Metropolitan Tabernacle in London streams services live on Sundays at 11am. and 6.30pm (and also Bible Studies on Wednesdays at 7.30pm) – see their website: http://www.metropolitantabernacle.org These live webcasts are also available on iPad/iPhone. In addition, there are recordings of good sermons to be found at: http://www.knowyourbiblerecordings.org /index.php (for Stuart Olyott) and at http://www.sermonsfortoday.org (for Alun McNabb). Happy listening! The Lodge Trust news The Family Fun Day at Market Overton coincided with the Royal Wedding in May but attendance was good. Especially enjoyed were the stalls (particularly the plant sales), the two choirs and falconry displays. As one team member wrote: “Wow, what a fantastic day! The sun shone, the guests came, the first aid team had nothing to do and the ice cream was cold!” The event raised £8,000 for the charity (before deductions for expenses and VAT). The café and shop are open Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. Enquiries about BIBC: please ring 0116 221 4883. From Birstall Independent Baptist Church

Feast of Sacred Heart We celebrated the Patronal Feast of Sacred Heart at Rothley followed by a social evening. It was so lovely to welcome our guest Priest to celebrate with us Fr Anthony Pateman. Sincere thanks go to everyone who made it such a success. Summer Fete Our joint churches Sacred Heart and St Theresas Summer Fete is on Saturday July 7 at Sacred Heart 11.30 -2.30pm. Lots of stall, raffle etc. Please come and have some fun and support us. Musical Instruments We are trying to set up a youth orchestra/music group in the church and we are looking for some redundant musical instruments, so if you have one tucked away that you no longer want and would like to donate it so a young person can learn, it would be very much

appreciated. We are willing to collect it. Just contact the church office on 2929939. First Holy Communion In May, nine of our young people had their first Holy Communion. It was a most moving service with the church packed with friends and family. It was followed by a special breakfast for the children in the hall. They all looked spectacular too. The girls in their white dresses and the boys in their suits and ties. A lot of hard work went into decorating the church, preparation of the service and the months of instruction for the children. Thank you all who helped. Confirmation The holy mass of confirmation will be held at St Theresa's on Friday July 6 at 7pm which will be led by our Bishop Malcolm McGuinness. All welcome. Some targeted drugs stop cancers from growing blood vessels. A cancer needs a good blood supply to provide itself with food and oxygen and to remove waste products. The process of growing new blood vessels is called angiogenesis. Anti angiogenic drugs can slow the growth of the cancer and sometimes shrink it. Other groups include a particular type of drug, such as a monoclonal antibody. These target specific proteins on cancer cells. There isn't a simple way of grouping targeted drugs that is easy to follow. This can sometimes be confusing. Some drugs belong to more than one group because they work in more than one way. For example, a drug that works by blocking cancer cell growth may also be a monoclonal antibody. Some monoclonal antibodies trigger the immune system to attack and kill cancer cells. So these monoclonal antibodies are also a type of immunotherapy. For ease, we have grouped targeted drug therapy into: • monoclonal antibodies • cancer growth blockers • drugs that block cancer blood vessel growth • PARP inhibitors Ask your specialist about targeted drugs. They can explain: • whether this treatment is suitable for you • what the aim of treatment would be • what it would involve and the side effects It is possible targeted drugs are only available as part of a clinical trial in the treatment of some cancers. This is because there isn't sufficient evidence for them to be used routinely and the trial exists in an attempt to prove the targeted treatment provides additional benefit. If you would like to explore targeted treatment options in a particular cancer or targeted treatment clinical trial availability, discuss this with the clinical team

Who owns this car? THE METHODIST Church values the limited parking spaces around the Church, but are very concerned about a BMW car that has been parked for almost three weeks on the Church premises. The registration is S991 GRR, and despite making enquiries with neighbouring houses its owner cannot, at present, be traced. The Police have indicated that it is not taxed, but is covered by a SORN, and that it is not owned by anyone local. As there is, on the back seat a ‘dust mask’ it does suggest the owner may be in the building trade. As the Church is keen to avoid the cost of removing the vehicle, any information would be gladly received. If the owner cannot be traced, the vehicle will have to be towed away in early July.
