New £1.1million bridge across A6 A £1.1million footbridge across the A6 in Birstall was lowered into place by a crane on Saturday August 26.

House builders Jelson were required to pay for the bridge as a condition of the company getting planning permission to build the Hallam Fields Estate. They appointed contractor Danaher & Walsh to do the work, which began in March. The bridge will connect the Hallam Fields development to the park and ride site and will provide a safe crossing for pedestrians and students at-

Hilda celebrates 100th birthday A BIRSTALL resident for much of her life, centenarian Hilda Astley has seen a great deal since her birth in Belgrave on September 11, 1918. World War I ended in the year of her birth and in the decades since the world has been transformed but it was family and friends that were most like to occupy her thoughts when she celebrated her 100th birthday at the Cedar House care home in Rothley where she has lived since 2015. When Hilda left school she worked in an office before moving to work in a factory. During the second World War she worked at the British United Shoe Machinery company, as part of the war effort. Hilda married Bill Astley in 1939, just after the outbreak of the war, and when Bill was called up to serve in the army they were separated Pic: centenarian Hilda Astley with her birthday card from the Queen

for quite long periods while Hilda continued to live with her parents in Leire Street, Belgrave. Bill became a Captain in the army and their daughter, Diane, was born during his service in Egypt . It wasn’t until the end of the war in 1945 that he was demobbed and the family moved into a house together in Leire Street. In 1968 they moved into one of the new houses on the Gates estate in Birstall. Daughter Diane married and had two children, and Hilda now has five great grandchildren. Hilda’s husband Bill sadly died in 1996 aged 81. Hilda continued to live on Harrowgate Drive until 2015 when a series of falls and a stroke made it too difficult for her to live alone and she moved into Cedar House. In September Hilda and a fellow resident of her care home also celebrating her 100th birthday enjoyed a birthday party attended by the Mayor of Charnwood Christine Harris who presented both ladies with a bouquet of flowers.

Fire crew attends park fire A FIRE crew was called to put out a fire in Watermead Country Park near Whiles Lane on September 3. An area of 50 square feet containing shrubs and trees was damaged by the blaze, thought to have been started by a group of young people who were seen running from the scene at 7pm. Firefighters from the Birstall station used a water backpack and a bucket to extinguish the fire.

Midland Window Installations BIRSTALL FOOD Hub has now been up and running for six months, supporting people through difficult times in their lives when there is not enough money to buy food.

THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2018

A loyal team of 12 volunteers operate the food hub from the coffee shop in Birstall Methodist church each Tuesday from 10-11.30am, except for Tuesdays following a Bank Holiday Monday. A spokeswoman said: “The supply of food parcels from the Soar Valley Community Food Project at Rothley Baptist Church is working well. Local support for this project is very much appreciated and, in particular, food donations at Birstall Co-op Food are very generous. “Each week we spend about £10 to buy fresh items such as bread, milk and eggs for our six clients. These items are added to the food parcels that we receive from Rothley. In addition we fund

the costs of our mobile phone. “Early in September we were delighted to receive a generous donation from Diane Allen and Julie Tinley who raised the money at their place of work, Renault, Leicester on Abbey Lane. They were supported in their efforts by Alex Leigh, General Manager.” To ensure that the food hub’s finances are secure, they are holding a Coffee Morning at Birstall Methodist Coffee Shop on Saturday December 8 from 10-12. Claire drops seven Library hours extended stone at slimming class BIRSTALL LIBRARY is now a smart library, allowing access to building while the library is unstaffed.

Claire Alderson realised she had to change when she saw the photos from her 40th birthday party.

She said: “I realised just how big I’d become…I didn’t like what I saw. I knew I had to change. “The following month I joined Slimming World. The plan is so easy to follow and it’s fantastic how much food you can eat and still lose weight. “I love what I call a Claire’s Special, salad, mushy peas and chicken meat. It took me a year to get to target. I feel like a new woman! My Slimming world group and Louise my consultant has been so supportive and helped me reach my target weight. To anyone who wants to lose weight I would say take the step into Slimming World it works.” Pics: Claire Alderson (left) achieving target September 2018 with (right) Birstall Monday morning Slimming World Consultant Louise Valk; (inset) Claire’s before pic

Self access technology means that anyone who is a member of the library (free to all) can enjoy extended hours, enter the library using their card and PIN and borrow and return books, use the computers, WIFI and photocopier. Users will not be able to hire DVDs when the library is unstaffed. The times when the library is staffed are likely to be reduced as the County Council continues to take measures to reduce its costs. Adults over 16 will need to register to use their Smart Library in

Smart Mode and complete a short introduction to the system with a member of staff. Under 16s can only get access to the Smart Library in Smart Mode if accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.

Local election A BY-ELECTION was held in Birstall on September 13 to fill a vacancy on Charnwood Borough Council. The successful candidate was Shona Rattray (Con). She said: “Thank you for electing me as your representative on Charnwood Borough Council. I’d like to thank all the Birstall and Wanlip residents who turned out to vote in the recent by-election, regardless of which candidate you chose to vote for. Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on September 10. A member of the public commented that the cemetery was looking much better but that the hedges needed attention. PCSO Mo Musa presented the crime report. He said that attendance at local police surgeries was a good way to raise issues of concern. Attendance had fallen in recent months from around 20 people in an hour, to 10. He said that two men were arrested following a car theft in Birstall. He said the police were aware of alleged drug dealing in the car park behind the Libra Parade flats. Councillor considered a planning application from Jelson for a change of use from public open space to residential garden land. The small site is at the rear of a few properties on the Hallam Fields estate. Councillors felt there was insufficient information to give an opinion but wished to support the concerns that had been expressed by one of the neighbouring properties. Councillors received the quarterly report from the Youth Café. It was reported that average attendance was 25 per session. It was agreed to add an additional session per week for a six

It was agreed to reduce the specification of the building and put it out to tender again. The council received a postcard from a Guide thanking the council for their donation towards her trip to Iceland, and from the parents of Dylan Campbell for providing permission to erect a plaque and picnic table in the School Lane playing field in memory of their son, who was killed in a traffic accident. Issues raised at the last parish council surgery included parking on Bentley Road, dog mess on the Sibson Road pavement, and a request for larger litter bins on the School Lane playing field.

Parking fine

Recently I was the unfortunate recipient of a parking fine at the Birstall Co op. Until a few months ago, parking was free and I would happily recommend that my clients, when visiting my classes, should park there. I know many of them would nip into the store on their way home, which worked well for everyone. For motorists who are unfamiliar with the Co op’s new arrangements, they are not likely to become aware of them until they receive a ticket. Selfish On the first day back to school after the summer holidays I was walking along Wanlip Lane at approximately 8.30am when I witnessed the most appalling and selfish driving of parents taking their children to Riverside School. Cars were mounting the pavement, parking on double yellow lines, driving fully onto the pavements and even stopping on the road in the queuing traffic and letting their children out of the car. I realize that there is little or no official parking at the school but something needs to be done before some poor child loses their life. Goodness knows what it will be like when the Severn Trent works get down to that end of the lane. S Frost

White Horse anniversary OWNERS OF the award winning pub The White Horse are celebrating the tenth anniversary of the pub’s re-opening. Ten years ago this month Charlotte Mills, James Foy and Ady and Jenny Doyle re-opened the White Horse bringing back the ‘White Horse’ name and the pub for the community of Birstall. The couples, who at the time were neighbours, had become friends after buying chocolate Labradors from the same litter and the business is named ‘The Chocolate Dogs Company’ in their honour. Both dogs are still going strong and enjoy a biscuit at the dog friendly pub and a walk around Watermead Country Park. All Birstall residents, they have worked hard to build the business and are proud of what it has become. James said: “The key is to reinvest and make sure the pub itself and the staff are presentable, and we also love to be on top of food and drink trends.” “As well as beautifully presented pub classics we offer an extensive range of burgers and a great variety of personally selected beers, wines and spirits.” The pub stages many events throughout the year to keep customers interested, and this year’s Christmas events have just been launched. Christmas always brings together singers from all the different churches, and the brass ensemble, also in its tenth year, keeps the Christmas spirit going on Boxing Day. brought to Barrow by the professional touring theatre company “Harp and a Monkey”, full of rousing music and droll Lancashire humour. The harp 'n' banjo driven electrofolk-storytelling trio use the first half of the show to give beautifully crafted and sometimes spooky tales of Lancashire life, love and remembrance. The outfit, who have been friends for more than 20 years, channel the ghosts of summers spent in municipal parks and winters walking on the moors. Songs about cuckolded mole catchers, a lone English oak tree that grows at Gallipoli, care in the community and medieval pilgrims… The Importance of Digging Holes will start at 7.30 on Friday October 12th in the Community Centre, Humphrey Perkins, Cotes Road,

TO PARAPHRASE the song (and probably totally mis-quote it): "Didn't we have a loverly time, the day we went to Stamford?" And yes, we did. The sun shone and the coach was full. The market (absolutely huge) was in full swing, selling everything from socks to celery. Full of colour and scent and chat and people a great day for all. Our meeting on October 8 in the Day Centre, School Lane, Birstall, will be where members of the group will be able to re-live and tell of their "Musical Memories". As this is such a wide spectrum and music is such a huge part of everybody's life, it is bound to raise some lovely and interesting memories. As our programme is so diverse, a quite dramatic change now sees our November meeting showing us how to Help Hedgehogs - a talk by Colleen Powell, and if, like me, you haven't even seen a hedgehog for many years, it may be really good to see how to encourage these little creatures to come to our gardens and, perhaps, stay! We now think, seriously, of our Christmas event for this year, which will be on Saturday November 17 in St. James Community Area, from 12 noon to 2pm. We will be having a Soup and Puddings lunch, which sounds scrummy! There will, of course, be rolls and butter, wine and fruit juices. As well as tucking in to some lovely home-made soups and puds, there will be stalls with Christmas gifts for sale, Christmas cakes and Christmas wreaths for sale and to order. There will also be a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt, made by one of our members. This year's charity which we are supporting, the Baldwin Trust, will also have a stall with gifts for sale. We hope the proceeds from this sale will go a good way to providing a defibrillator for one of the boats they run. Saturday November 17 is the right sort of time to start thinking of your own Christmas, and a relaxed lunch at St. James, surrounded by 'Christmassy' ideas and goodies, will be 'just the job' before the rush and panic set in. We will look forward to seeing you in the Community area of St. James Church on November 17 From St James’ Monday Group

NHW news

& crime report Fireworks It has become popular to celebrate private events like weddings and birthdays by letting off fireworks and they can make the event extra special. There are also a number of public celebrations, in addition to the traditional Bonfire Night, where fireworks play an important part. The problem is that loud explosions can be very distressing to vulnerable people, such as the elderly and small children, especially when they occur without warning. Animals, of course, have no understanding of what is happening and can become very agitated by loud noises. The law on the private use of fireworks is very clear and offenders can be and are prosecuted. It is against the law to let off fireworks in the street or other public places at any time without a licence. No fireworks can be set off anywhere else before 7am or after 11pm, except on certain dates when the time is extended. The next ones are: Bonfire Night, Nov 5 Midnight Diwali, Nov 7 1am New Year’s Eve, Dec 31 1am Chinese New Year, Feb 5 1am If you plan to celebrate with fireworks in your garden on these days or for a private celebration, please be considerate and warn your neighbours in advance. If they know it is coming they might like to watch your display from their window. Children can then have the opportunity to enjoy the excitement watching with their parents rather that being awoken suddenly and scared by the unexpected noise. Neighbours with pets can decide in advance the best course of action to keep their distress to a minimum rather than having to react as it is happening. No one wants to interfere with people's right to celebrate but a little consideration and forethought can make life much easier for all concerned. If you are affected by fireworks being let off in the street you should report it to the Police on the non-emergency number 101 but their powers are limited when it occurs on private land, such

as gardens. The authority responsible for Noise Nuisance (not just fireworks) is, in our case, Charnwood Borough Council. Visit its website for further information: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/environ mentalhealth Or call 01509 634636 On October 20 the Crew from Birstall Fire Station will be at our Advice Shop in the Parish Council Building on Sibson Road Car Park at 11am to give advice and information on keeping your family and home safe. Come and discuss your concerns about fire and gas safety with the experts or just bring the kids to see their fire engine and learn about their work. (The Crew will be on duty at the time and their presence is subject to them not being required elsewhere in an emergency.) From Birstall & Wanlip NHW

Crime update We have had a total of 48 crimes reported in August, which is slightly up on July’s figure of 37. There have been 15 reports of assault, the vast majority of which have been domestic-related and another 10 thefts of fuel from the petrol station, which is up from just four last month. We have only had one house burglary reported and one non-dwelling burglary and the number of thefts from vehicles has also remained relatively low, with just four reports being received. Lastly, there has been one cycle theft and three reports of vehicles being damaged. Aside from this, there have not really been any other crime trends to report. For further crime information please visit: www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL60/ Crime Prevention Advice Satellite navigation systems (sat-navs) continue to be sought after by criminals and this month we have had another report of one being stolen, with damage being caused to the window of the car in order to do so. Please ensure that if you do own a sat-nav you remove it from display whenever you leave your vehicle unattended and either hide it away in the glove box or preferably, take it with you. Please also remove any cables or cradles for the device as these are tell-tale signs that you own one, and consider keeping a small cloth in your car to wipe away any marks left on the window by the cradle, as again this is an easy way for criminals to see whether you have a sat-nav or not. Lastly, make a note of any serial numbers for the device so that if it is stolen and later recovered, we have a better chance of returning it to

Cricket Corner SEVEN CONSECUTIVE victories have seen the 2nd XI steadily claim the table to occupy fourth position with just a couple of games to play. Skipper George Agar has lead the way with runs and wickets and with Grant Wright scoring his maiden fifty and Jamie Reay, Rich Olsen and Ash Coulthard making good centuries with the bat. Jack Wright has taken plenty of wickets supported by the ever steady Steve Findley. The 1st XI sit in mid table with 8 wins and 7 losses with a mixture of good and some not so good performances. Some sort of record must have been set in a recent match against YMCA as the game was finished by 2,40pm. Veteran seamer Paul Oldcorn took 6 – 12 as the visitors made only 56 and Birstall knocking off the runs in just 11 overs. Off the field the club continue to prosper and a quiz night run by Christian Cain proved very popular. With the pitch now unavailable due to football, the club will have to play its final two “home” matches at Leicester Ivanhoe and Braunstone Town CC and we are grateful for their help. you Neighbourhood update The beat team have been out again this month completing speed checks on Birstall Road, following complaints about speeding in the area. In a little under an hour we recorded just over 60 vehicles through the site and I am pleased to report that the vast majority of drivers were sticking to the speed limit. One driver was stopped and verbally warned and another was reported for travelling at 45mph. We have plans to complete further checks in the area in the coming months so please ensure that you are sticking to the speed limits at all times to avoid being caught yourselves!

Poet’s new book ‘EXPRESSIONS’ is the second book of poetry by local poet Andy Sherriff. Andy (56) of Bramley Road says the book contains 36 poems and profits from sales will go to mental health charities in Leicester. ‘Expressions’ costs £5.00 from andysherriffpoetry@gmail.com. One of the poems from the book: Inspiration Be inspired by the simplest things Like the petals of a rose A word or phrase that’s overheard Or a single line of prose Photographs from way back when Renewing memories from the past First impressions of a new-found friendship Knowing it will last Cloudless skies on moonlit nights Or a foggy winter’s morn Sunlight streaming on open fields Illuminating golden sheaves of corn Crystal waters of a babbling brook Twixt islands of stepping stones Lush green valleys and rolling hills Churchyards filled with ancient bones Buildings aged and weather worn With crumbling carved façades Distant beaches strewn with shells There’s no need to look to hard All around there’s inspiration Wherever you may be Just take the time to look and listen And learn to feel and see

Second shop local evening on Sibson Road BIRSTALL BUSINESS Co-operative organised the second ‘Shop Local’ evening shopping event on September 7. Despite the weather, organisers decided to continue with the evening and made alternative plans to ensure the stalls could still be involved in the event. During the evening the rain cleared and the sun appeared to shine on those who came out to support the shops and stalls. Richard, Manager of the RSPCA shop, said he thought “the turnout was great considering the terrible rain in the afternoon”. Again there were new customers that don’t get chance to visit the village shops and businesses during the day, and customers enjoyed the extra hospitality on offer at some of the shops involved in the event. Hema thought the event was brilliant for her fledgling business, Spice Chumchi, “Despite the rain, the Birstall community came out to support local businesses, it was lovely to see a range

of stalls as well as the shops open. It was the first time we have traded but we’d definitely do it again!” she said. RT’s Café had a very successful Greek themed evening with a full house enjoying great food and a friendly atmosphere. The Birstall Business Co-operative will be organising a further event early in December and they are looking into the best way to continue these events through the winter. More details soon in the Birstall Post or on the Shop Local Birstall Facebook page.

Local roads TRAFFIC ALONG Wanlip Lane is being disrupted while Severn Trent renew water pipes. Work began on August 6 and won’t be completed until May 31, 2019. It started at the junction with Myrtle Avenue and will move south along the full length of Wanlip Lane. Side roads will be closed and traffic controlled by traffic lights as the work progresses. ROADWORKS THAT are keeping the Loughborough Road closed between Red Hill Island and Checketts Road are due to be completed on November 9, but contractors have given Oct 26 as a provisional date.

Pre-school’s new term BIRSTALL METHODIST pre-school on Wanlip Lane have started the new term with a renewed focus on children’s individual learning and enhancing their interests through play.

Garden party raises funds A FUNDRAISING ‘Tea in the Garden’ event on September 2 raised £551 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Shirley and Claude Harrison opened their Allington Drive garden and hosted the event. There was lots of food to eat, a jewellery stall, a tombola and raffle, various

quizzes and a produce stall. “Everyone enjoyed the fun and laughter and Shirley and Claude would like to extend their thanks to their family and friends who helped them and, of course, to everyone who attended and gave generously” said Eileen Molesdale.

“We have taken a much more natural approach in terms of the resources we have available” said spokeswoman Michele Tookey. “The staff team have been fantastic and put in much time and effort over the summer holidays to get rid of plastic toys that were not offering curiosity and spontaneous play and have now been replaced with authentic items such as real clocks, cameras, wooden logs and magnifying glasses and much more.” She added: “The preschool is also in the proceeds of implementing in the

moment planning which allows children’s interests to be at the heart of everything we do and encourages far more independent learning and exploration of the preschool environment.” The pre-school, located in the Methodist church, welcomes visits from parents who would like to look around. It can offer places from two years plus and accepts funding. The times of sessions are Mon 12.15-3.15pm, Tues 9-12noon, Wed 9-12noon, Thurs 9-12noon, Fri 12.15-3.15pm Contact tel. nos. Bowls club’s summer holiday Netball sessions EVERYBODY LOVES a break and where better to have one than at the seaside.

Last month St Margaret's Bowls Club toured to the sunny south coast at Bournemouth. On the first morning we set off to Swanage where everyone enjoyed a few hours in glorious sunshine exploring the town, some walking on the cliff tops, others enjoying the local hostelries - even a swim in the sea! In the afternoon we enjoyed a very hospitable match against the local club - see photo. The following day we played at Argyll Bowls Club in Bournemouth. This was a

WI news BIRSTALL AND Wanlip WI held their first meeting after the summer break on September 3. In August we went on our annual coach trip to Leamington Spa and afterwards visited the National Guide Dog breeding centre. With the proceeds of craft sales we presented our charity Gorse Hill City Farms with a cheque for £300. We are still celebrating this centenary year so Maxilyn and Bev are continuing to walk the Leicestershire Round and we host Radio Leicester’s ‘Down to Earth’ team on October 11. Our speaker for the evening was the very entertaining Elaine Pantling. She talked about and sang excerpts from her play ‘Alice in her Shoes’ written about Leicester suffragette Alice Hawkins. Our next meeting is on October 1 at the British Legion when Jo Golby will talk to us about the life of a Victorian Lady’s Maid and the competition will be a ‘weird, puzzling kitchen gadget’. The borough council’s Active Charnwood team is putting on the fun, social and informal sessions at Wreake Valley Academy. They are aimed at women over 16 who want to play without the commitments of a team or regular matches. The first session is free and then £3 each after that. All you need to do is turn up and bring appropriate footwear. The sessions got underway on Wednesday September 19, 7pm-8pm. Sea New local lottery cadets From St Margaret’s Bowls Club

LOCAL GROUPS and good causes across the borough will benefit from the newly launched Charnwood Community Lottery. Tickets for the lottery, which is being run by the borough council, will help raise money for good causes, charities and voluntary organisations. For every £1 ticket, 60p will go towards helping a good cause and players can win up to £25,000. Chris Traill, strategic director for neighbourhoods and wellbeing at the Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch the Charnwood Community Lottery as it will help raise money for lots of good causes in the borough who do great work for the benefit of residents. “The lottery also means people can choose to help a specific group, perhaps one that’s close to their hearts, and possibly win anything up to £25,000. We hope the lottery is empowering for the organisations involved and for ticket buyers. As we’ve said, people can take a chance and make a difference “We would like to thank the groups who have signed up so far but I would encourage the many other fantastic organisations in Charnwood to consider getting involved. Simply visit the lottery website for more information. “The Council decided to set up a lottery to further support the local voluntary and community sector.” A number of groups have already signed up to be involved including: Loughborough Leggo Youth Group Marios Tinenti Centre Peter Le Marchant Trust Quorn Local History Group Coping with Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland Shepshed Toy Library

Caroline Darrall, chairperson at Loughborough Leggo, said: “We are pleased to join the Charnwood Lottery as it is a creative and effective way to raise much-needed regular funding, during difficult financial times. The money raised will help our young people with special needs to reach their full potential.” The first Charnwood Community Lottery draw took place on September 29, 2018. To buy a ticket, visit www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk where you will be asked to create an account. When a participant chooses to support one of the registered charities or good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central community fund. If no charity is chosen, all 60 pence goes to the community fund.

Cadets and staff rowed in three boats from Ross Walk to Pillings Lock Marina in Quorn. Rowing eight hours a day over two days, the crews covered 22 miles, taking a break at The Waterside Inn in Mountsorrel. Instructor Samantha Clayton said: “Pillings Lock Marina rewarded cadets and supporters with a generous BBQ spread on the Saturday evening and a camping spot which enabled four cadets to complete their practice expedition for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award “It’s estimated that the combined total from sponsorship forms and collection buckets exceeds £1,500. TS Tiger would like to thank anyone who contributed to that amazing total” Money raised will help pay for improvements to facilities and provide cadets with new equipment to enhance training on and off the water. TS Tiger Sea Cadets welcome anyone aged 10-18 yrs, and meet at 140 Ross Walk on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9pm. “Come down and join our team” said Samantha. The council will use the community fund to support local projects and good causes through its grants scheme. Lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries in places such as Melton Mowbray, Corby and Mansfield.

Kerala The damage caused by the dreadful monsoons in Kerala, India, was felt most keenly by our Parish Priest Fr. Saji, whose home state this is. So many suffered the loss of family and friends and saw widespread devastation. Fr. Saji (pictured above) spent time helping at a camp near his sister’s home during his recent visit there where monies raised by our parishioners helped provide items such as food, clothing, bedding, cleaning materials for flooded houses and writing materials for students. A Healing Mass took place on September 21, celebrated by Fr. Denis Labarte. Parish Activities Choir practice has resumed for our adult choir and this year our music director Chris Lowe is working to develop a children’s choir. If you love to sing
