Birstall man jailed A MAN who installed hidden cameras in his Birstall home to spy on two teenage girls has been jailed. Graham Bertram (72) was sentenced to five years when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court today on September 5. On August 23, Bertram, of Hill Rise, Birstall, was found guilty of: • Two counts of observing a person doing a private act • One count of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching • Two counts of supplying a controlled drug of class B In 2015 one of three victims, who was then 15 years old, visited Bertram’s home address. When she turned the television on, she noticed the picture on the screen was showing one of the

Cannabis cultivated Claire braves the on Woodgate Drive shave for charity
A MAN who turned his Birstall property into a cannabis factory has been jailed for five years and four months. Rakesh O’Dedra (34) pleaded guilty to cannabis production and possessing criminal property at Leicester Crown Court, Leicestershire Live reported. O’Dedra had 36 plants growing at his home on Woodgate Drive. A hydroponic watering system was installed and the electricity meter had been bypassed. Several windows had been blacked out and there were 36 cannabis plants with a value of between £13,000 and £25,200. A police search of O’Dedra’s house in Halkin Street, Belgrave revealed a stash Continued from page 1 rooms in the house. She subsequently went into that room, where she discovered a hidden camera. She believed Bertram had installed it in order to watch her and reported the matter to police. The victim also said that there had been occasions whereby Bertram would also instigate conversations of an inappropriate nature and on some occasions had touched her in an inappropriate way. As part of the investigation, two other victims were identified who both said that they too had visited Bertram’s address when they were teenagers. One of the victims told police she also found a camera at Bertram’s address and that he gave her amphetamines and cannabis. The other victim said that Bertram had touched her inappropriately. Bertram has been placed on the sex offenders register and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Detective Constable Kate Dabrowska, of Leicestershire Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) said: “This is a particular sinister case – Bertram’s victim was completely unaware that he’d been watching her. “He was doing it for his own sexual gratification and there is little doubt that he thought his actions would ever be uncovered. However, his victim was quick to realise that something wasn’t right when she saw the picture on the television and reported the matter to police. “We don’t know whether Bertram ever filmed anyone else who visited his address and I hope his victim can take some comfort from the fact he has been brought to justice and is now serving a custodial sentence.” Bertram was found not guilty of causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity at trial. There are a number of different agencies who are able to offer independent help and support to victims of sexual offences in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Further information on these services and details on who to contact if you have been a victim of a sexual offence can be found by visiting http://leics.police.uk
A BIRSTALL woman has shaved all her hair to raise money for a cancer charity. Claire Wiltshire (43) of Rosetree Avenue, was supporting Macmillan’s ‘Brave the Shave’ and has raised more than £1,500. “I chose to do ‘Brave the Shave’ mostly in memory of my lovely dad who passed away from Mantle Cell Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2014” said Claire. “My dad really was my hero, he was such a wonderful man. The court heard that O’Dedra’s wife decided against the move as it would mean moving their children’s schools, so it was put on the rental market but did not receive any interest. O’Dedra was then approached by someone who said they would use the house to cultivate cannabis and he allowed it to happen. The November issue of

Awards celebrate Charnwood’s unsung heroes PEOPLE FROM Birstall and Wanlip were recognised at the Charnwood Community Heroes 2019 awards. The event, organised by Charnwood Borough Council, celebrated the many positive contributions made by people, groups and businesses in the borough . This included people who are dedicated to helping scout groups, homeless people, the young, the elderly and many other local good causes. Gerald Sessions, a Scout Leader with Birstall Scouts, was a winner. He said: “I was surprised I hade been nominated for a community heroes award. I am really pleased to receive the award and feel that I am just part of a great team.

Working together we support all scouts to learn skills for life, giving them a safe environment to develop and grow. I enjoy challenging the kids and introducing them to adventurous activities, it also allows me to enjoy all the things I did as a boy.” Abe Khayer from Wanlip received an award for helping disabled and vulnerable families with homelessness and benefit claims and for spending four years pressing Severn Trent to address the issue of smells from its
sewage treatment plant in Wanlip. Abe said: “I never thought I would get the award as reading through the nominees I felt there were more people who deserved it better. “I literally fight for those who have been hit the hardest through our current government’s draconian system that targets the most vulnerable in our society. There is a forgotten group of our citizens who suffer in silence because they do not want to be branded or seen as scroungers and this is why they never challenge the unfair decisions made against them. “If you see or know a neighbour who seems to be in need of help, need of support, is struggling or has a disability, please reach out to them.” The White Horse won an award for its charity work and community focus. Charlotte Foy and Beccy Kay accepted the award on behalf of the pub. “We were very surprised to be nominated for this

award, it was a lovely event and we were very pleased to have won an award “ said Charlotte. “We really enjoy the Duck Race, the great Birstall bake off and the other events we organise, they are very much at the heart of our business and us being part of our community in Birstall” she added. Another Birstall winner was Lindsay Rajczyk who won Green Hero for her work for Adapt collecting and recycling crisp packets. She also won the Harry Cook award. Lindsay said: “I feel very honoured to have been nominated in the first place and it was fabulous to have won because it gets the charity I work with recognised, ADAPT Prembabies, and is a great way to get everyone involved in recycling. Schools especially, have been supporting us and using it as a great way to highlight recycling and being environmentally friendly with an item that children eat. I’d like to thank Shona Rattray for allowing people to drop off crisp packets at her Sibson Road shop.” The event took place at John Storer House in Loughborough and guests were treated to an afternoon tea before the heroes were presented with certificates and chocolates. Other gusts included leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jonathan Morgan, Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Brenda Seaton, Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan and Charnwood MP Ed Argar Cllr Deborah Taylor, the council’s lead member for community, said: “It was absolutely fantastic and inspiring to meet so many people who are committed to helping others. “Charnwood Community Heroes is just a great way to say thank you to people. They don’t do what they do for any rewards or plaudits but it is quite nice when someone says thank you and lets you know you are appreciated. and everyone at the awards is very appreciated. “There were many inspiring stories and it was great to see people enjoying the afternoon. I am sure many new relationships and networks were started and will further strengthen Charnwood’s community spirit. “Congratulations to all of our heroes and we look forward to next year’s event and celebrating more community heroes.”

Birstall’s new sports pitch now open THE SPORTS pitch and playing field next to Hallam Fields primary school has been declared open to the public. It is owned by Charnwood Borough Council and the council is going through the process of finding sports clubs to lease it. As the playing fields are a public facility members of the public are now being encouraged to use the new space. The sports pitch has a recreational centre which is part of the school. It has a community room, kitchenette, toilets and changing rooms for two teams and officials. The outside area is a large playing field with a cricket pitch and full size football pitch. The facility was provided as part of a section 106 agreement between Jelsons and Charnwood Borough Council. Birstall Borough Cllr Shona Rattray has been meeting with officers from the borough council to speed up the process of opening the site. She said: “ I was keen to get this facility signed off by Charnwood and open to the public so that we make good use of this great facility. I am pleased to say that since we announced that the playing field was open to the public I have seen a number of local residents using the field. We have requested that people keep off the short cut cricket pitch but the large field

Entrances to the Country Park will be from Brockington Way, via the recreational centre or through the footpath off Long Meadow Way running along the back of Harrowgate Park. Shona said: “ I am continuing to follow progress of Hallam Fields Country Park which we anticipate to be open to the public in the next 12 – 18 months. I have agreed regular meetings with officers at Charnwood to ensure we get this available for use by residents as soon as we can. This will be a fantastic facility for Birstall residents and will be great to have somewhere so local to walk and enjoy the outdoors”.

Parish Council notes
THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2019
A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on September 9. In public participation, a member of the public commented that having read the clerk’s report, he thought too much time and resources had been spent on dealing with a fallen tree compared to other issues such as rising crime and the shabby look of the village. Police Sgt Michael Young reported that drive offs without paying from the petrol station were inflating the overall crime figures for the village. He said that two people from Sileby had been arrested for burglary and he was hopeful that one of them would get a long sentence. Sgt Young said Police were aware of a quad bike that was being driven recklessly in the north end of Watermead Country Park and that they were looking for the culprit. The council agreed to spend £299 renewing membership of the Society of Local Council Clerks. Councillors considered issues relating to a tree on Worcester Avenue playing fields that fell into the garden of a resident on Worcester Avenue, damaging his fence. It was agreed that the homeowner’s fence panels be repaired/replaced and that clarification be sought from Charnwood, who lease the playing field to the parish council, about responsibility for the trees. It was reported that work on the Allington Drive Memorial Garden is progressing. The council have painted over some graffiti on the School Lane playing field in response to a complaint. It was reported that the Worcester Avenue allotment gate was stiff and difficult to open and that the Meadow Lane ditch had flooded and subsequently some allotments had been affected by flooding.

Leisure centre CAMPAIGNERS FOR a Birstall leisure centre have collected hundreds of signatures and are urging more people to sign up. Campaign Group Birstall Matters has an online petition at 38degrees.org.uk that has been signed by 179 people and a paper petition organised by local Labour party campaigner Abe Khayer has 350 signatures – 3000 names are needed to trigger a debate about the issue at Charnwood Borough Council. Mr Khayer said: “The campaign has excited the community. Many families are expressing their frustration on why residents, especially children in Birstall are robbed from having an affordable place to have sports activities. “Many families who do not have a car cannot send their children to the nearest leisure centre due to the class timetable not being in sync with the bus timetable. “A leisure centre is desperately required for the growing population of our village.” Sign the petition at the Birstall Co-op supermarket or Fields Fish Bar and the pharmacy, both at Hallam Fields. You can also request a petition sheet from khayer@mail.com • Mr Khayer is also campaigning for a third GP practice in Birstall. He has secured interest from three GPs willing to set up a practice in Birstall. The preferred location would be within Hallam Fields and could be a new build or within an existing building.

Positive feedback State of the village - whilst I fully agree with the your reader who has concerns about the village of Birstall, gardens and parks and bus shelters etc. I do feel we should offer some positive feedback to parish council members for the efforts they have made. Steph Evans

August marked the 40th Anniversary of Birstall Garden Centre’s longest serving member of staff. Mark Hickenbotham joined the team in 1979 as a young teenager straight from school. We celebrated the occasion with a surprise presentation for Mark. As a family in it’s second generation at the garden centre, we just wanted to thank Mark and show our huge appreciation for all the effort and hard work that he has put into keeping the garden centre at the forefront of presentation and efficiency during the past 40 years. It’s a privilege to see his commitment and loyalty over the years and we are so grateful to him and look forward to his presence for many more years to come Thank you Mark From Jo, Jordan, Brian and Ann
Hallam Fields Replying to Valerie Skeffington's positive and appreciative attitude to Birstall's facilities and leisure opportunities, it is commendable that all these are available and established within the local area in the older part of the village, several churches and church rooms, restaurants, coffee shops, library, community centres, riverside walks etc. all helping form an essential community spirit. However having moved to the Hallam Fields development over 13 years ago, unfortunately none of these facilities have been provided in these new developments, and without transport it’s a long walk from here to access these facilities, especially in the evenings or in winter months. There is no bus service in Hallam Fields, only a limited 22B to take us through the village to Leicester, which again we have to go to the Gates Estate to catch their
bus. No meeting places. such as public house, tea rooms, church rooms or meeting places. In passing, I would like to say that I also find Birstall a very pleasant place to live in, of course there could be some improvements, like most places and if there is any help required with a petition etc, or actively supporting " Improving Birstall " will be only too pleased to help. Thanks During August I worked as a mentor on the NCS (National Citizen Service) programme. On behalf the young people in my team I would like to thank Birstall village cricket club for allowing us to use their facilities to plan a fundraising social action project. Huge thanks must also go to the businesses of Birstall who made generous donations towards our curry night raffle and to Short & Lunn for supporting a cake sale on Sibson Road. The young people in my team raised a substantial amount of money for their chosen charity, When You Wish Upon a Star, and I could not be more proud of their achievements. Natalie Lord

Bradgate Park
I was amazed and dismayed in equal measure to read the news in the September/October Rothley Post of the "new leadership" at Bradgate Park. Two questions spring to mind which really need to be answered. In precisely what ways do Nick Rushton and Peter Soulsby think Bradgate Park is "not delivering for the people of Leicester and Leicestershire" and why does Peter Tyldesley feel he "was forced into leaving"? In my opinion the improvements in the seven years since Mr Tyldesley's arrival have been immense and his commitment to its flourishing has been obvious to anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing one of his enthusiastic, knowledgeable and inspirational talks about Volunteers welcome the park. In fact board game cafés seem to be cropping up all the time. Games such as Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne lead the way in an increasing variety of games available. At the same time many people are exploring different forms of spirituality. What would happen if these two were combined? A group in Birstall are proposing to try to do just that by creating ‘Soul Games’. Gill and Peter Chester say they are currently trying to finalise a venue but the idea would be to meet on a monthly basis, probably late Sunday afternoon, and offer games to play. If the idea takes off the meetings may become more frequent and the range of games available increase. If you are interested in the idea then Gill and Peter can be contacted on 07848 144169

Film Presentations Thurcaston and Cropston Parish “All is True”
Oct 18 (101 mins) Our film in October is a relaxed & sweet natured but poignant drama. Written by Ben Elton, it stars Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. In 1613, William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is burnt down so he returns to his struggling family whom he has neglected in Stratford-on-Avon. “Mary Queen of Scots” Nov 15 (124 mins) This British epic historical drama stars the brilliant Saoirse Roman. At 16 years of age, Mary became Queen of France but catastrophically was a widow by 18 years old. She returned to her beloved Scotland but...Mary’s cousin Elizabeth was Queen of England. The cousins were rivals in power and love! “Bohemian Rhapsody” will be shown on Dec 13. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advance tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door

mouth & Melcombe whose green overlooks the harbour and marina. The third and final match was played at Portland Borstal which probably sounds slightly forbidding. The title is historic and the club now has no connection with the young offenders’ institution. Their green is situated in a remote and exposed area of Portland. A club member said: “Each of the three matches offered a very different experience. All were played in a competitive but very friendly atmosphere and all were most enjoyable. On all three occasions we lost by a small margin. The award for the overall highest scoring player went to Chris Holmes for the second successive year.” He added: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip, with everyone enjoying the camaraderie and looking forward to another tour next summer. Council spreads cheer
Get up and dancing at Cedar Mews CEDAR MEWS care home in Birstall held its first ever festival in September. The event featured live music, performances by the Dance Academy, a children’s fancy dress competition, stalls and refreshments.
BIRSTALL PARISH Council is inviting you to nominate someone over 70 to receive a Christmas hamper. Many years ago, Birstall Parish Council were Trustees of a local charity that has now ceased to exist. The charity was set up to meet the needs of the elderly and needy in the village and when the Charity closed its accounts, the Parish Council decided to continue with this initiative and they honoured the beneficiary list by making sure that they all received the gift of a Christmas hamper. Parish Clerk Sue Coulson said: “Over the last few years the beneficiary list has naturally declined, and Parish Councillors decided that this heart-warming initiative should continue. They all agreed that Christmas time is a time for giving and thinking of others and that this gesture captures the very essence of the season, as it spreads joy to some of the most vulnerable people in the Parish. “They decided to develop and grow the list up to a maximum of twenty beneficiaries each year and they are asking for your help by seeking nominations from the community to enable them to continue to do this in December 2019.” The Parish Council are asking for you to nominate someone who is over 70 years of age that you feel deserves some Christmas cheer. The nomination form is available to collect from the Parish Council offices or you can download a copy from the Parish Council's website: www.birstallparishcouncil.org.uk Return your completed nomination forms to the Parish Clerk by post or by hand to the Parish Council Offices on Birstall Road or email: admin@birstallpc.org.uk Receipt will be acknowledged and confirmation given on whether or not your nomination meets the criteria and that it has been included on the beneficiary list. Nominations will close on October 31 each year to enable the hampers to be ordered and prepared ready for delivery the following December.

Is it time to hire a tutor? WHEN IS the right time to hire a 1-1 tutor for your child? Anita Pancholi from Tutor Doctor says: “Schools are often brilliant at providing support for children in need of extra help, but sometimes additional help outside of the classroom can really boost your child's confidence as well as their grades.” Anita says consider the following when you’re thinking: is it the right time to hire a 1-1 tutor? • If your child has missed school • Learning difficulties and language support • Struggling in a particular topic • To stretch and challenge your child’s abilities Anita said: “11 in home tutoring can help your child re-integrate after having some time off due to illness, injury, moving schools or other circumstances. Even missing a single topic at school can have a knock-on effect later, as your child may have missing building blocks in learning. “1-1 in home tutoring is often
used to supplement classroom learning for children that have a language barrier, especially if English is their second language, or if they have special educational needs. Finding a tutor with the right skills is essential. “Sometimes the fast-paced nature of a classroom can result in a child falling behind if they haven’t fully grasped the concept. This can cause them to lose confidence in their ability. If your child is finding one topic particularly challenging, short-term tutoring can be really effective.”
She added: “1-1 in home tutoring can be beneficial if your child would like to delve deeper into a particular subject. A tutor who is passionate about their subject can stretch your child's learning by providing a more in-depth, comprehensive view of a particular topic.” To find out how Tutor Doctor can support you child’s learning, please call (0116) 319 4416 or visit www.tutordoctor.co.uk/leicester-north to book a free consultation

& crime report NOW IS a good time to look at the security of your property as the nights are getting darker. Try and look at your home as a burglar would- are there any vulnerable areas, such as insecure windows? Security lighting is a good deterrent and should be fixed high on a wall and positioned at no more than a 45 degree angle. It is also a good idea not to leave your bins where they can be used to climb on to reach windows, chains can be bought to chain them to a wall. It is also worth checking the security of garages and sheds, as this is where tools are often left and can be used to access properties. Ladders are also often left outside and insecure, chains are an easy way to secure them so that they cannot be used. Have you checked your garden? High hedges and shrubs can conceal a burglar from anyone passing by. It is worth investing in a timer for a lamp to come on as it gets dark so that it looks like someone is in. If you go out at night, close your curtains and leave a living room light on
so that it looks like you are in. Halloween is at the end of this month, which can be a worrying time for vulnerable people. Please explain to your children why it is not a good idea to knock on random doors. If there are homes that are decorated, or you know the people that live there, that is a different matter. Our monthly advice shop is on the third Saturday of every month, from 10am until midday (the Robert Dickinson building opposite the garden centre) We have many security items for sale, all sold at cost price. We also code cycles for free and you can get a very strong D lock half price. Please feel free to pop in on the 19th for a chat or a free tea or coffee. From Birstall & Wanlip NHW
Crime update We’ve had a total of 47 crimes reported to us in August – slightly up on last month when we had 41. The number of thefts from vehicles has unfortunately risen again this month, with a total of 10 offences being reported. Always lock your vehicle when you leave it and if possible, remove all valuables as we are still getting reports of laptops and satnavs being taken – these items are relatively easy to remove but can be expensive to replace. We have had eight reports of criminal damage this month, seven ‘drive-off’s’ (people leaving the petrol station without paying for fuel), seven ‘other thefts’ (including two vehicle thefts) and five reports of assault. On a more positive note, we have

WI news BIRSTALL & Wanlip WI met on September 2 at the British Legion. 41 ladies listened to Tim Coltman’s moving talk “The Story of Two Crosses” about his great grandfather’s experiences in WWI. William Coltman was a deeply religious man who was prepared to go to war but not to kill. He was known as a “stretcher bearer” although he chose to carry men single handed on his back. Miraculously he was never seriously wounded and saved many lives. He was highly decorated for his valour with numerous medals including the Victoria Cross. Some of us enjoyed a morning making beautiful glass ornaments at smARTsy workshop in Ratby and a “Tribute to Abba” concert was held at Birstall Social Club on September 27. On September 9 we held an emergency meeting to discuss the appointment of new committee officers as the current holders wish to stand down after 10 years service. To continue as a WI we need a president, secretary and treasurer and it would be a great loss to the village if we have to close after a 101 year presence. Our next meeting is on October 7 when Ann Baker will lead a “Ukulele Demonstration” and the competition is an unusual musical instrument. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

There will be activities and games for the children, refreshments, stalls and a chance to explore the new setting and reminisce with new and old staff, including the founder members of Acorn Under Fives.” Acorn began over 35 years ago initially as a home playgroup and was run by parents looking for a suitable group for their own children. A group of mums all worked together to create somewhere for their children to meet as there was minimal other local provision at the time. Everyone is welcome to the evening and the committee would love to see as many old faces and people new to the setting who would like to come and have a look. “Come along in fancy dress - there will be a prize for the best dressed!” said Jackie. To help manage the evening people are being asked to buy tickets either from the Acorn building or via email acornunderfives@gmail.com - tickets are £1 for adults and include a drink and a cake. Children are free.
Finals day: champions crowned BIRSTALL WATERMEAD tennis club held the finals day of its club championships on Sunday September 8. Colin Lister, Club Committee member, said: “It was a great day. All the matches were played in a competitive but friendly and sporting way. It was also encouraging to see the Club’s youngsters taking part and enjoying some success.” As well as enjoying the tennis, the participants and audience also were well catered for with home- made curry, a barbecue and delicious cakes. Club Chairman, Andy Page, was keen to emphasise the importance of the social aspect of sport. “Days like this provide a lovely atmosphere for people to get together, meet new people, chat and enjoy the food.” An enthusiastic audience saw some keenly fought matches in all competitions. The competitors had played up to five matches to get through to a final. The eventual winners were: Anuj Gohel - 8&U, Rohan Kukadia 12&U, Shay Bharakhda - 14&U Amy Walpole – Ladies’ Singles

New extended play area at school THE PLAY area at Highcliffe primary school has been extended during the summer holidays. The area at the Elmfield Avenue end has been laid with Astroturf. Roger Taylor, Director of Estates at the Lionheart Academies Trust, said: “The new Greengate building took up some of the original play area so we have tried to create more space for the children to play and have PE.” The swimming pool at Riverside school closed earlier this year. Mr Taylor said: “The pool is closed at Riverside because of boiler problems and running costs. The Highcliffe pool is open and all three primary schools in Birstall have access to it. “We are looking at a master plan for children swimming in Birstall. Decisions need to be made about a variety of options around swimming pools.”

Cllr Roy Rollings, lead member for transformation, has taken over responsibility for issues relating to environmental strategy and carbon reduction. Cllr Shona Rattray is the new chair of the Scrutiny Commission, which provides the council’s cabinet with advice prior to it taking a decision and ensures that council or external providers and partners are operating efficiently. Cllr Julian Howe has been appointed the council’s tree champion. He said: “The borough council has committed to plant at least 100,000 trees throughout Charnwood helping to improve air quality and the environment as part of the

campaign to make the borough the healthiest place to live in the country. “I am excited that as part of that drive I have been asked to be Tree Champion and to promote the cause both inside and outside of Council. “Three are a variety of ways we will encourage this running from our scheme to give individual households a free tree, to working with community groups and parish councils and making tree planting a condition of planning consent. “In Birstall alone we hare hoping to plant around 19,000 trees in the new park on Hallam Fields and I’m sure we can find more room elsewhere in the Parish. “Once I’m established in the role I’ll be more than happy to meet parishion-
ers of organisations that think they can help me reach my goal.” Cllr Howe has also been appointed to represent the Borough Council as a trustee of Burley Houses.
Thief steals van AN OPPORTUNIST thief stole an electrician’s van while his back was turned. Simon Oates, who volunteers at Birstall United Juniors Football Club, was taking items out of his van in the club’s car park on Meadow Lane at 1.30pm on Thursday September 5. While only a few feet from the vehicle he heard the door slamming shut and the vehicle sped off down Meadow Lane. Simon said: “I just looked on helplessly, I couldn’t get to him quickly enough.” The silver Mercedes Vito van contained all Simon’s electrical equipment, his wallet and football club items. After contacting the Police, Simon has received calls from a farmer in Nottinghamshire who found some of his abandoned property, and a call from a person in Lincolnshire who witnessed the van being used to steal a mountain bike. The theft has cost Simon around £2000. He said: “Once the news got out people have been very supportive, I’ve had so many calls, with people offering me free use of vans. The whole thing’s been a nightmare.”
Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society is busy preparing for this year’s panto as Sue Withers from HATS explains: After our extremely successful last pantomime, Babes in the Woods, we are pleased to announce that our panto this year will be Cinderella. Cinderella is a very well known fairy tale that has been a part of our history. Generations have enjoyed the traditional story of how good triumphs over bad. Everyone loves a happy ending when things have been difficult. Poor Cinderella finds herself at the bottom of the pecking order when her father the Baron, marries again and also becomes step father to 2 rather difficult step daughters. Cinderella’s best friend Buttons who is secretly in love with her, does his best to protect her and look after her as does her father. However, his new wife and her daughters, Asphyxia and Euthanasia are very cruel to Cinderella, clearly jealous of her beauty, generous nature and natural charm. Cinderella manages to rise above these obstacles and her beauty is noticed by the Prince who sets out to find her and secure their future together after meeting her at the Ball. Cinderella is so happy at finding true love, that she forgives her wicked step mother and step sisters for how they have treated her, she welcomes them with open arms as they all become part of a happy family and celebrate together. Come along and join in with this traditional fairy tale, and you too will be protective of Cinderella. Hissing and booing at the baddies is encouraged, so do your best to make sure Cinderella knows how much you all love her. Make sure you book your tickets and come and see our fine cast, in their fine costumes, at our fabulous venue, Birstall Social Club. See you soon. Grant funding for you
THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2019
COMMUNITY GROUPS in Charnwood are being urged to contact their local borough councillor to help them access grant funding for projects. The member grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council and enables each borough councillor to award up to £1,000 to projects in their ward each year. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council said: “The member grants scheme helps spread funding to projects right across Charnwood, in each ward. “We want to encourage groups who are making a positive contribution to their community to contact their local councillor about the grants.” Last year the four Birstall Borough councillors awarded a total of £4000, supporting the following local groups: Birstall United Junior Football Club £800, Birstall RAF Air Cadets £570, Birstall Scouts £700 and Acorns Under Fives Nursery £1930. Cllr Shona Rattray said “ We were really pleased to be given the opportunity to award these grants within our community and are very happy to be able to do it again this year. These grants help make a real difference to Birstall Community groups and the residents that participate in them.” Any Birstall Community groups wishing to apply for a grant can find details on the website www.charnwood.gov.uk/member_gran ts Feel free to contact your local Borough Councillor if you wish to discuss a specific project. Each Councillor can support projects with grants up to £1000, and for larger projects groups can apply to more than one Councillor. Shona said “Applications close 31st December 2019 but each application will be reviewed as soon as it is received. Applications are open now.” Birstall Parish Council also has a grant scheme to support community groups and projects. The Parish Council will consider an application for grant aid from any local, voluntary or charitable organisation where the group’s activities can be seen to be of benefit to the Parish. In 2015/16 a total of £4464 was paid to 17 groups including sports clubs and youth organisations. To find out how to apply go to Birstall Parish Council’s website.
Summer fair raises charity cash A PARK Road nursery has raised £695 for Cancer Research UK. Children, staff and parents at Children 1st at Birstall are pleased to have raised the money at its Summer Fair. The event was well supported and featured an array of stalls and activities for all ages. In addition to supporting Cancer Research UK, the Summer Fair was organised to celebrate Children 1st Day
Nurseries’ 30th anniversary. Bhavisha Gill, manager of Children 1st at Birstall, said: “I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who supported our 30th Birthday Summer Fair. We are pleased to be able to make the donation to Cancer Research UK which will help the organisation to achieve their vision of bringing forward the day when all cancers are cured. This would be an incredible achievement and one
which would bring joy to us all. Cancer Research UK receives no government funding and relies totally on donations to support its work so all donations large and small are vitally important if we are to beat cancer.” Children 1st Day Nurseries plans further fundraising activity throughout its 30th anniversary year across its 24 settings within the Midlands and South Yorkshire.
Feeling the heat at summer fete ST JAMES’ summer fete was held in August on one of the hottest days of the year. All the stalls, from surprise parcels and bottle tombola to the burger and hot dog stand, via cakes, toys, plants and jewellery, were busy and inside the church, tea and cakes provided a break from the heat. Club retain cup BIRSTALL BOWLING Club retained the county Greenwood Cup with victory over Bagworth in the final. Having qualified out of the area with a score of +28, a narrow 48-46 victory over Wycliffe in the semi final secured Birstall’s place in the final which was won 56-40. The club couldn’t make it a double as they were beaten by Blaby in the county cup final on the same day. Birstall players won three county titles and were runners up in three others. Richard Smith won the over 60s singles, beating Bob Burton (Shepshed) in the final. John Jenkins and Roger Cooper secured the over 60s pairs title with victory over Hinckley’s Stuart Millidge and partner, and Pa Walker won the ladies singles by beating the ladies
national singles champion JamieLea Winch (Kingscroft) in the final. Pa was runner up in the two wood singles, losing out to New Lount’s Jan Elliott, Deam Walker was beaten by Kat Bowman (Thringstone) in the final of the Under 25 singles, and Rosemary Groves, Julie Lovell, Jan Everitt and Di Hurst just lost out in the fours final to a New Lount four skipped by Lynn Green. In the Leicester League first division, Birstall were runners up to Blaby, while in the Loughborough Triples League second division, both Birstall teams secured promotion to the first division next season, with the Lighthouse team winning the title on 79 points, five ahead of runners up Sands.
Burglar A BURGLAR who admitted to stealing money from a premises on Front Street, Birstall has been remanded in custody until he is sentenced in November. Oliver Le Butt Seal (29) together with Kyle Slaney (34) were responsible for a spate of crimes between April and June this year. The offences were committed at homes, shops and businesses with vehicles, electrical goods, cash and jewellery among the items stolen. Le Butt Seal of Lobbs Wood Court, Humberstone, Leicester pleaded guilty to seven counts of burglary, one count of theft, one count of criminal damage and one count of driving while disqualified, when he appeared at Leicester Crown court earlier this month. Slaney, of Barnes Heath Road, Rowlatts Hill, Leicester admitted to four counts of burglary and one count of theft, at a hearing held in the same court this week.
Bike power in country park A FREE, family-friendly event promoting active travel took place on Saturday September 14 at Watermead North Country Park. The county council’s safe and sustainable travel team led the activities in the picnic area opposite King Lear's Lake, including treasure trails and competitions, with prizes up for grabs. A qualified mechanic was on hand to give bikes a free-of-charge health check and there was also the opportunity to try out weird and wonderful bikes, such as pedalling your own smoothie for an extra health kick, or getting creative on a paint-spinning bike to produce a piece of art to take home.
Volunteers needed A CHARITY that supports homeless people in Leicester is looking for new volunteers to help it deliver its services. One Roof Leicester has been supporting people who are homeless in the city for the past four years by providing accommodation, mentoring and advice. To date, the charity’s many volunteers have operated a night shelter for three months during the winter period, offering ten beds a night for the homeless. Now, thanks to a National Lottery boost of almost £190,000 announced in May 2019, on September 30, One Roof Leicester opened ‘One Roof Shelter’ as a permanent, all yearround service. Betty Clarke, Project Manager at One Roof Leicester, said: “We will be launching an 8-week pilot of the static shelter on September 30 from Central Baptist Church, Leicester and in December will start the rotating night shelter from faith venues for 3 months as we have done in previous years. As well as offering free accommodation, we will be providing advice to people on claiming benefits and applying for housing – upskilling them so they can reach their full potential. This includes local homeless individuals, destitute refugees, refused asylum seekers and EU migrants.” She added: “To make the shelter a success we need the support and help of volunteers and we are urgently looking to increase our already substantial volunteer base. We have a range of volunteering opportunities which range from a few hours in the evening to overnight. We offer all our volunteers training, including Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Wellbeing. Volunteers work in groups and there is no lone working.” To find out more, or to volunteer at One Roof Shelter, visit www.oneroof.org.uk

New reed bed built A SCHEME to create a new reed bed in Watermead Country Park started on September 16. The project is being led by the Leicestershire & Rutland Ornithological Society (L&ROS). The scheme, at the northern end of the existing reed bed nature reserve, will create an additional reed bed habitat with benefits for birds such as bitterns, egrets, water rails, reed warblers and sedge warblers. In addition, there will be benefits for fish breeding, for water quality, water catchment capacity and also additional habitat for otters. The project is being funded by the
Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society, the Trent Rivers Trust, Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council. The northern part of the reed bed nature reserve will be closed for 2 - 3 weeks while the excavation works are underway. Chairman of the L&ROS, Andy Smith, said: “This is an excellent example of working with nature to deliver multiple benefits for the natural and human world. Sustainable schemes such as this will hopefully become the norm in future. We are delighted that our funding partners share our belief in delivering sustainable quality water environments.”

Rothley wines win medals TWO WINES grown in Rothley were praised on national television on the BBC1 Saturday Kitchen programme by renowned chef Marianne Lumb on August 10, 2019. She had mentioned the sparkling wines and the elderflower wine from Rothley Wine Estate and then a week later at the Regional Wine competition, this boutique wine estate scooped 8 medals. Liz Robson, vineyard proprietor at Rothley Wine Estate, said “I am so pleased. All the hard work has been recognised, and none of this would have been possible without the help of our remarkable band of volunteers. No gold medals were awarded at all at the competition, which indicates that a silver medal is a noble accolade indeed. King Richard attained a silver thus beating King Henry who got a bronze. Now this might upset the history books a bit!”. She added: “The four awards achieved at the national competitions early in the year had identical awards in this regional competition, which I feel shows the stringency and reliability of the judging.”

News from the churches Whatever you say about the weather in England, it is never boring, is it? In the middle of August we had to put the heating on and then Wham! the hottest day of the year was when we had the St. James' Summer Fete! Unbelievable. We did believe it, though, as the blue skies and warmth of the Bank Holiday certainly brought out the crowds. All the stalls, from Surprise parcels and bottle tombola to the burger and hot dog stand, via cakes, toys, plants and jewellery, were wonderfully busy with crowds of people all bent on having a really enjoyable time. Inside the church, which was blissfully cool, the tea and cakes proved a welcome respite with the lovely background of a photo-show and music. All in all, a super event for all the family. Another family event was the Flower Festival at Our Lady and St. Nicholas in Wanlip. The open flower-filled church, combined with the proceeds from the coffee shop, raised £432.72 for church funds. September has proved to be quite a month for both fund raising and special events: The Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust annual 'Ride and Stride' event was held on September 14, with cyclists and walkers being sponsored, and our two churches being open from 10am to 6pm on the day for participants and visitors. On September 19, the Church of England Guild of Vergers are to hold a Canterbury Province Festival at the Cathedral Church of St Martin in Leicester, with members of the Guild coming from all over the country to celebrate, and also to hold a Festal Choral Evensong. Quite a splendid occasion, and to which all are invited. The Mother's Union are to celebrate 90 years of love and service on September 4, with members from Queniborough, Rothley and Birstall and Wanlip, with a service at St. Hilda's Church, East Goscote, which will be taken by Canon Lee Francis-Dehqani. It really does all happen in our Churches, doesn't it? Come and join in fun, friends and worship! From Birstall Parish Church
Parking Changes At Methodist Church Everyone is reminded that the only parking allowed between the Church and the Coffee shop is for disabled. Those spaces that faced the church have been removed to allow for a safe walkway from the pavement to the main entrance. Planters have been placed there, al-
though it is anticipated that the blue rope will be removed in due course. Happy Hour On Tuesdays Running every Tuesday afternoon between 3pm & 4pm. This group is open to youngsters of Junior School age. Come along & join in the activities. Belgrave Churches Closed On Marathon Day The three Methodist Churches in Belgrave (Harrison Road, Claremont Street, and Edgehill) will not be holding Services on Sunday October 8, due to the road closures in connection with the Leicester Marathon. A number of Birstall residents attend these churches and they are reminded that Birstall Methodist will be holding morning worship as usual and all will be welcome. It will be all age worship led by Graham Tennant and Andrew Biggins. Advance Notice – Christmas Festival This year’s Christmas Festival will take place on the last Friday & Saturday in November. The theme for the displays in the church is ‘Winter Wonderland’. The church is always grateful to the many friends, organisations and businesses who prepare a creative display or a decorated tree to put in the Festival, for folk to enjoy. If you have an idea which you could develop into a display (large or small) and have not done so before, then please contact 07828394276. As last year admission will be free, but there will be donation plates for The Bark Foundation (the orphanage in the Cameroon). There will be stalls of crafts, decorations, homemade cakes, preserves etc running from 10am on Friday 29th. There will be a table top sale on Friday 2-6 and Saturday 10am until 2pm. A few spaces remain Tel 2671181 to check availability. From Birstall Methodist Church
Harvest and other Sunday services We will be holding our Harvest Thanksgiving on October 6, when the speaker will be John Todd (Loughborough). This service, like the others in the month, will begin at 10.45 a.m. and be held at our usual venue (Room PT1, The Palmer Tomkinson Centre, The Cedars Academy, Wanlip Lane, Birstall, LE4 4GH) and you are given a warm invitation to attend. Our monetary offering will go to the Nepal Relief Fund. The service on 20th will be led by Paul Leonard (Shepshed) and Graham Bunkall will take the 13th and 27th. Geoff Thomas (London), using Romans 3, Philippians 2, 1 Corinthians 1 and 2 Peter 3, gave four sermons on Jesus Christ: His Diagnosis of the Human Condition; His Deity; His Death and Being His Disciple. Ian Parry (Cardiff) took two sessions on our responses to God seen in the life of Jacob, given in Genesis 28 and 32 – just ‘religion’ or true conversion. The Pastor at Stanton Lees, Jonathan Bayes, gave the historical lecture on Monday morning on Marie Monsen, a Norwegian missionary to China between 1901 and 1932, and drew out the lessons we can learn from her life. These talks can be downloaded from the Chapel’s website: https://www.stantonleeschapel.org.uk/ser mons/ Evington Chapel Lectures The 2019/2020 series of free lectures is on the theme of ‘The Gospel [good news] of the Grace [unmerited favour] of God’ (Acts 20:22) and begins on Saturday 12th October at 7pm when Tim Martin (Milton Keynes) will speak on ‘The Gospel in the Garden’. Monday group WITH ALL the lovely fine weather we have had in the past couple of months, it really was a bit rotten that the day of the coffee morning kindly hosted by one of our Monday Group members turned out to be one of the wettest! But despite the inclement weather a good number of people turned out to support our cause and the boiler was in continual use for teas and coffees, and so it turned into a very successful morning. There is another coffee morning planned, to be held by another of our members, but the date is yet to be decided upon. Friday August 30 saw our coach outing to Lincoln for the day, and September saw us back at our usual venue in the Age Concern rooms of the Village Hall, where we are always happy to meet visitors and new members. We meet on the second Monday of every month at 7.30pm. If you would like further information (or encouragement) please call our leader, Jane Scott, on 0116 2673761. She would be very happy to talk to you. From St. James Monday Group

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Breast Cancer Risk – A Game Changer on the Horizon Birstall BAG’s are committed to raising awareness about cancer and particularly early diagnosis. The earlier cancer is diagnosed the more likely it is to be able to have treatment aimed at curing the cancer. Although it is only a couple of months since BAG’s provided a breast cancer update, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we wanted to let readers know about a new risk calculator currently being trialled in breast cancer. Risk calculator We know that people are more at risk of developing breast cancer depending on their lifestyle and also their family history or genetics. A new breast cancer calculator could soon be available in GP surgeries to help people find out their risk of getting the disease. According to a study by Cancer Research UK, the method can assess a person’s risk of developing breast cancer on the basis of both genetic and lifestyle data. By combining information on family history and genetics with other factors such as weight, age at menopause, alco-
hol consumption and use of hormone replacement therapy, the scientists hope to offer a reliable prediction. The calculator, which is currently being tested by GPs, practice nurses and genetic counsellors, also takes into account 300 different genetic indicators for breast cancer. This is the first time that anyone has combined so many elements into one breast cancer prediction tool. It could be a game changer for breast cancer because it will enable us to identify large numbers of women with different levels of risk – not just women who are at high risk. It is hoped this will means more people can be diagnosed early and survive their disease for longer. Currently, around 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and, while the vast majority of these cases are in women (54,800), men
are also at risk. It could be some time before the risk calculator is adopted into practice by GP surgeries and so it is vital that both men and women continue to self-check regularly. Self-check regularly Women are advised to check their breasts each month for signs of breast cancer which can include a lump, a change in breast size or shape, a rash or skin sores, nipple discharge, skin indentation, constant pain or a change in skin texture. Similarly, swelling around the armpit or collarbone could be an indicator, as can a growing vein or inverted nipple. Signs of breast cancer in men can include a lump, inverted nipple, discharge, a sore or rash, swollen skin and small bumps in the armpit. If you notice any symptoms of breast cancer, the NHS advises that you see your GP as soon as possible. If you would like to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month please consider joining in with the national Wear it Pink Campaign https://www.wearitpink.org on October 18.
