Kids join village clean up TWO LOCAL organisations teamed up in April to give Mountsorrel a spring clean.

Soar Valley Rotarians joined volunteers and young people from the Sorrel Youth Café as part of the annual ‘Rotary Spring Clean’ when clubs across the country invite their communities to join them in creating neighbourhoods to be proud of.

Before starting out from the Sorrel Youth Café on the Green, the group were kitted out with high visibility jackets and equipment for the morning’s clean up. Despite the occasional shower, volunteers managed to collect eight bags of litter, glass and other objects, Continued on page 2

Heritage centre plans AMBITIOUS PLANS for a £3million heritage centre, museum and tea room have been announced by the Mountsorrel Railway Project (MRP) The Nunkley Hill Community Heritage Project would be located next to the restored Mountsorrel railway, just off Swithland Lane near the junction with Halstead Road.

Organiser Rotarian Peter Bickley thanked everyone for their efforts adding that “It is really great to see so many volunteers working together for the

benefit of the local community and particularly so many young people under the direction of the Sorrel Café Youth Leader Graham Lloyd.”

The partnership between the two groups continues to grow after the Rotary club supported the Café with a donation of £225 toward the cost of its coffee machine. Rotarian Dennis Kent said: “The Club is keen to support any initiative that brings our communities

together. In working with the Café we are encouraging people across the generations to work on the issues that will help keep our villages great places to live. It also helps both groups gain a better understanding of each other’s views.”

While some people were out and about collecting the litter, the theme of a healthier cleaner community continued inside the Youth Café which was again open to the general public for refreshments.

Supported by Charnwood Borough Council and the Leicestershire County Council Detached Youth Work team, people were able to seek advice and information about recycling and waste management and the dangers of drug misuse.

Graham Lloyd, the Youth Officer at the Café, said: “Today has been a great opportunity to ask the Mountsorrel community to think again about ways to keep the village clean and safe. Eleven young people aged between 10 and 17 worked with Rotary members to clean

Continued from page 1 has taken place behind the scenes to develop an idea to create a heritage centre to help tell the historical stories of both Mountsorrel and Rothley. Both villages have a wealth of history and we hope to be able to present that history on a permanent basis for local people to experience and learn from.”

The MRP hope to re-site two historic granite buildings to Nunckley Hill. The first of these is the old barn that stands just off Kinchley Lane. This will disappear under a Lafarge over burden mound if Lafarge’s planned expansion of the quarry gets the go ahead later this year. The building would be rebuilt stone by stone and would be divided into two floors with one floor forming a Rothley heritage centre and the other floor a Mountsorrel heritage centre.

“Although near to the restored Location of Heritage Ctr Mountsorrel Railway, the aim is for the heritage centre to cover all aspects of Rothley and Mountsorrel’s history, not just the railway and quarry.” said Steve.

Also on the site would be a museum building to house the last surviving steam locomotive from the Mountsorrel Railway ‘Elizabeth’ and the three restored Mountsorrel Granite Company wagons.

The railway would provide a link between the proposed heritage centre and museum to both the Great Central Railway and Stonehurst Family Farm.

The second building to be relocated to Nunckley Hill will be the old quarry time office. This is the only surviving building from the original quarry yard, and is now derelict. The building would be restored at Nunckley Hill retaining its external appearance. Together with an

up the village. It was a great turnout with good numbers of visitors popping into the Café for a cup of tea and a chat.”

Over the next year the Café intends to develop its programme of Open Café sessions and is keen to hear from anyone who has an idea for a theme.

existing granite building already on site, the time office would be fitted out as a tea room.

Steve said: “Our aim is for the site to be open to the public seven days a week and for access to the museum, heritage centre, Nunckley Trail and other attractions to be available free to use with the tea room run on a ‘not for profit’ basis to provide the income needed to support the running and upkeep of the site. The site will be entirely disability accessible and we also aim to create sensory areas and through the use of Braille on information boards, create a visitor experience that can be enjoyed by everyone.”

The County Council’s Charnwood Forest Regional Park Steering Group has approved the preparation of a £3million grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Landscape Partnership programme. If successful the grant aid will assist a number of projects including Nunckley Hill. The First Round grant application was in May 2013 and the outcome will be announced in late October.

Steve said: “Although the railway restoration work has been undertaken in conjunction with the Great Central Railway, the GCR are not involved with the Nunckley Hill project although they support it fully. The scheme is run and operated entirely by community volunteers. With the County Council, Borough Councillors, Mountsorrel and Rothley Parish Councils and Lafarge Tarmac all supporting the scheme, I’m hopeful that we can realise the vision and create what will be a much valued community resource.”

Once the outcome of the first stage lottery application is known, a planning application for the scheme will be finalised and submitted after further consultation with the project’s neighbours, the wider community and other interested parties.

New plans for 250 homes PLANS TO build 250 homes off Mountsorrel Lane in Rothley have been revised by the developer.

Builders William Davis Ltd changed their plans after Charnwood Borough Council approved a planning application from another developer at Brookfield Farm, Rothley for a new village school and 180 dwellings.

Features of the revised plans for the ‘Brookside’ development include: • a maximum of 250 dwellings • no primary school • no new GP surgery • increasing the area of separation by relocating some of the proposed housing to the former replacement school site • smaller balancing ponds • the junction of the new link road with Loughborough Road will be a roundabout and not a T junction • reduced street lighting on link road to reduce light spillage on local wildlife habitats • green corridors within the development widened from 15 metres to a minimum of 20 metres • a new area of public open space next

Growing village NHW MOUNTSORREL’S NEW Beacon Officer PC 2995 Ian Mundy is looking for new Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators to reinvigorate the scheme in the village.

PC Mundy has been working on the beat for a few months now and is keen to get Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) schemes running across Mountsorrel. He’d also like to hear from people in the village who are already in a scheme to ensure his contacts list is up to date.

PC Mundy said: “It doesn’t take a great deal of time to run a scheme but the benefits can be enormous, particularly in terms of bringing communities closer together by looking out for each other and reporting suspicious behaviour. Members receive details of crimes in their areas; have access to crime prevention literature and stickers, and things such as UV pens for marking property.

“Being part of a scheme strengthens links with local police officers and helps to reduce crime by sharing information and raising awareness of any crime issues. I am really keen to find volunteers willing to co-ordinate a scheme because I think it would be really good for Mountsorrel.”

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on February 11.

The Parish Council has agreed to press for the maximum amount of developer contributions for the village, and it will seek to have green spaces within the site protected from future development.

Several members of the public voiced concerns about areas of land behind Balmoral Road and bordering their properties which had been put up for sale at auction.

It was reported that the Parish Council had not been invited to an opening day at the Soar Valley Leisure Centre, despite the Council’s investment in time and money in the project. It was agreed to write a letter of complaint to Charnwood Borough Council.

A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on March 11.

It was reported that the Balmoral Road plots of land had been sold at auction. It was agreed to contact Charnwood requesting that any development on the land be prevented until ownership of the land is proved, and that clarification be obtained on what development is permitted.

It was reported that negotiations with Tesco regarding access to the Memorial Hall car park were still ongoing and it was hoped an agreement would be reached soon.

Charnwood Borough Council has apologised for failing to invite the Parish Council to the Soar Valley Leisure Centre open day. It invited councillors to attend a tour of the facility.

A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on April 8.

PCSO Tom Joyce reported that PC Ian Mundy was trying to get the Neighbourhood Watch up and running again.

Mr Steve Cramp from the Mountsorrel Railway project updated councillors on the progress of the project, restoring a disused section of branch line. There are plans for a heritage centre, shop and tea room at Bond Lane halt. The council agreed to give the project its full support.

At the May meeting Cllr Brian Allard was elected Chairman for the ensuing year and Cllr Paul Harris Vice Chairman.

Driving challenge for young people TEN YOUNG PEOPLE from Mountsorrel’s Youth Café took part in a driving challenge.

Club’s smiling kids AN ACTION packed 90 minutes of games, music, craft, quizzes and stories from the Bible is promised at the Mountsorrel’s Kidz Klub.

The free club is open to all children who are currently at primary school.

Located at Mountsorrel Baptist Church on Leicester Road, the club had been running on alternate months. A spokesman said: “Because the children are really enjoying Kidz Klub and having so much fun, the church has decided to now run the club every month from September.”

Molly goes to Kidz Club. She said: “I think Kidz Klub is extremely fun and I love to be there because everyone has smiles on their faces.”

Park & ride USER NUMBERS at Birstall’s park and ride site have increased.

The £5.5million site opened in 2011 and between September and November 2011, 188 people used it each day. From December 2012 to February 2013, 300 people used it each day.

The County Council and Leicester City Council spend £500,000 a year subsidising the park and ride service, which also operates from sites at Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse.

The numbers of users of the Birstall/Enderby sites will have to double before the facility breaks even.

The service operates Monday to Saturday from 7am – 7pm. A day ticket is £3. Passengers with an older person’s pass travel free after 9.30am Monday – Friday and all day Saturday. www.quicksilverbus.co.uk

Organised by youth workers in partnership with the Awards Driving School, the day aimed to promote safe driving.

As well as driving with an instructor the young people, all aged 14 plus, were shown how to carry out a vehicle safety and maintenance check including the car’s tyres, oil, water and lights. They also took the Theory test, considered the importance of having the right attitude when driving, and learnt some basic first aid.

Graham Lloyd, the Youth Officer at the Café organised the event and told us: “It was the first time behind the wheel for everyone and I was impressed with how quickly they all got going. We designed the day to offer the right balance between driving practice and theory and to highlight the important skills needed for safer road use. Due to the nature of the activities places will be restricted, but we would be happy to organise another day if we can find the funding.”

Steve Haywood, Chair of the Mountsorrel Development Group presented participants with Certificates. He said: “It’s great to see that the day was a success. The Development Group supported this initiative as it believes that

being able to drive helps young people in so many ways. This is not only with things like independence, but also with finding employment and attending college.”

Melvyn Ward from the Driving School said: “We were very happy to support the challenge. We believe it is vital that young people get an opportunity to consider some of the key issues associated with safe driving as young as they can. Today the standard of driving was extremely high and all the instructors were impressed with the group’s commitment and responsible attitude.”

All participants received certificates and the Awards Driving School also offered them another free driving lesson when they are legally ready to take to the roads.

Have your say on plans A SERIES of public exhibitions and consultation sessions are being held to give people the chance to have their say on Charnwood Borough Council’s strategy, which includes plans for 1500 homes at ‘North Birstall’.

The six week consultation aims to find out what people think about the soundness of the strategy which will guide development in the Borough over the next 15 years.

The Core Strategy includes plans to provide around 9,000 new homes, including affordable homes and create employment land to help boost the local economy.

The consultation will begin on Monday, June 10 until 5pm on Monday July 22, 2013.

Cllr Matthew Blain, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “As a Council we are committed to helping our Borough grow and prosper and I believe this plan will help us achieve that aim. Soldiers’ Volunteer wins award Bibles returned

A 14 year old volunteer who helps with the Mountsorrel Railway Project has been recognised as the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire’s ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’.

BIBLES GIVEN to soldiers in World War I have been returned to Mountsorrel families.

During a clear out of a storeroom used by the Royal Leicestershire Regimental Association at the TA Centre in Leicester a box containing a number of Bibles was discovered. Inside the Pic: one of the returned Bibles front cover of each of them was the number, rank and name of the original owner. All the soldiers had served in the Leicestershire Regiment during WWI. The Bibles were passed to the Loughborough Carillon Tower & War Memorial Museum, where a volunteer researcher, Mrs Marigold Cleve began the difficult task of tracking down the surviving relatives.

Two of the soldiers’ families were traced to Mountsorrel; the first was Mr Andy Jobin of Strachan Close, the descendent of Pte Edwin Merry. Edwin originally from Blaby survived the war and died in 1956.

Andy Jobin said: “It was a complete surprise when the museum contacted me.

“It’s thrilling to have something that old that has a connection through my father’s line.”

The second soldier Pte Joseph Wilfred Stanford was traced to Mrs Stanford of Glenfrith Gardens. Joseph had served with the Leicester’s 2nd Battalion who had fought in both France and Mesopotamia (Iraq) during WWI. He too had survived the war and died in 1967.

Daniel Bowler from Rothley received his award from Lady Gretton at a ‘Young Person of the Year 2013’ ceremony at County Hall in April.

Daniel has volunteered with the project almost every week continuously over the last three years and is always there at the start of the session and stays till the very end, and this is after getting up at 6.30am to do his paper round!

Alongside the heavy physical work involved with reinstating the railway, Daniel plays an important part in the project’s ‘Wildlife Warriors’ ecology initiative. He spent his 2012 Easter holidays building over 30 wooden ‘insect hotels’ to be used by the children at a

Warriors event. His devotion to the group has so far allowed over 150 children to experience and learn about the wildlife around Mountsorrel.

In addition, Daniel has helped as a young leader at 1st Mountsorrel Cubs every Wednesday night and goes on camp with them, helping to cook and serve the meals and helping with activities.

Star Wars wedding theme STAR WARS fan Robert Rasin was delighted when his fiancé Lydia Martindale agreed to set their wedding date as May 4.

A COMMUNITY awards scheme that aims to recognise those people who make Mountsorrel a better place is looking for nominations.

May 4 is considered a holiday by Star Wars fans because of the popularity of a pun – “May the fourth be with you”, based on the phrase “May the force be with you” which is a quote from the Star Wars films.

The couple live in Mountsorrel and Rob works at Bargain Booze in the village.

The wedding took place at Christ Church in Mountsorrel and Lydia arranged for several of Rob’s friends to form an arch with light sabres as the newly married couple left the church.

Secretary Peggy Clarke said: “Out of the 6534 people on the Electoral Register in Mountsorrel, we only have 26 members in the Mountsorrel British Legion Branch.

“Mountsorrel has grown enormously during the last 20 years and we are appealing for your help to raise money for our servicemen and women and their families, by joining the Royal British Legion. It only costs £13 per year, that is 25p per week, to become a member and you don’t have to do anything more unless you want to, although visiting our stall at the Charity Fair on June 8 on the Green would help us to raise money for our cause.”

Lafarge sponsors kit MOUNTSORREL’S SOCCER stars of the future will be showing off their skills and a brand new strip thanks to a grant from Lafarge Tarmac.

The building materials and services company, which operates Mountsorrel quarry, has given Mountsorrel Juniors FC £750 to kit out its under 9s team.

Mark Forknall, secretary of the village club, visited Mountsorrel quarry to receive the cheque from site manager Trevor Warren. Mark said: “Our under 9s side has attracted enough players for three teams and our other age groups are starting to attract more players too.

Mark contacted Lafarge and Charitable Donations Advisor, Tracy Nagle, working with the Land and Natural Resources Team were able to organise a £750 grant. The money will pay for new jerseys with a Lafarge Tarmac logo for the three under 9s teams, enabling the old shirts to be passed down to younger players.

Quarry Manager Trevor said: “Lafarge Tarmac is always keen to help community ventures which bring local people together and offer lifestyle and leisure benefits. Mountsorrel Juniors FC is a fantastic club with a growing membership allowing local youngsters the chance to make friends, enjoy sport and learn about teamwork.”

Old & young take part in training YOUNG PEOPLE and volunteers at the Mountsorrel Youth Café have been learning together and having fun while taking part in a programme of training events.

All those taking part in the First Aid and Food Hygiene Courses receive nationally recognised certificates. One of the most popular events was the Self Defence and Confidence day. 29 people attended and explored techniques for defending themselves and feeling more confident when they’re out and about.

Danny Bigley from the Mountsorrel Matrix Martial Arts group said: “I planned a range of exercises to help people avoid, and if needed protect themselves in difficult situations. I was amazed at how everyone responded and kept going for over two hours. It was also great fun for my team.”

“The aim of the programme is to develop the skills of those involved in the Café so that they feel more confident in taking the lead in key areas of its work. Perhaps more importantly however one of the key aims of the programme is to promote intergenerational understanding through shared experiences.”

Youth group funds A GROUP that organises activities for Mountsorrel’s young people is seeking donations.

The Mountsorrel Youth Development Group (MYDG) organises a fun day at Halstead Road playing fields each year, and a programme of sports activities at the Soar Valley Leisure Centre in the summer.

A spokesman for MYDG said: “There is no charge to the public for any of the events which take place, but the MYDG do have expenses to cover in order to organise these fun activities. Approximately £3000 is needed in all. Once again we would like to reach out to the local community for donations toward these events. We realise that everyone has to ‘cut back’ but if each household could donate a small amount, no matter how small, our financial burden would be greatly helped.”

Litter blitz

LEICESTER’S INDOOR market is to be demolished.

INCIDENTS OF litter in known hot-spot areas has fallen in Mountsorrel since September 2012.

The 1970’s building which housed the fish and meat traders will be replaced with a new glass, steel and timber pavilion on the edge of the Corn Exchange.

The new building is part of a £7million re-development of the area.

Construction is expected to start soon on the pavilion which should be open by Christmas 2013. Once the fish and meat traders have moved in, demolition of the old building will start, making space for a public square on the site.

At a meeting of the local Area Forum on March 21, Nadja Rein from Charnwood Borough Council reported that there had been a 33 per cent reduction in litter and a 63 per cent reduction in dog fouling.

63 fixed penalty notices were issued in the period September 12 to March 13.

Theatre school’s celebration show

‘A MUSICAL CELEBRATION’ was performed by the Faces Arts Theatre School children in April at the Palmer Tomkinson Centre in Birstall.

Mountsorrel priest retires A SPECIAL service at Mountsorrel school marked the retirement of Rev Kerry Emmett and celebrated his eight and a half years in Mountsorrel.

Faces Arts, the locally based and well established Performing Arts Company for children, performed two shows to a sell out audience. Over 60 talented children aged from 4-16 years, from Birstall and the surrounding areas, performed scenes from various musicals such as Mary Poppins, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Lion King and Annie.

Around 60 people attended the service, held on Saturday April 20.

In September 2004, Christ Church was the venue for the licensing of the Rev Kerry Emmett as Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Mountsorrel and at the same service was the licensing, to the same benefice, of Mrs Patricia (Tricia) Emmett as Lay Reader. The Benefice of Mountsorrel includes the Parish of Christ Church and the Parish of St Peter, Mountsorrel.

During Kerry’s time, Christ Church has been repainted, toilets renewed and lead stolen from the roof was replaced by stainless steel, while St Peter’s is currently

being remodelled at the back.

Christ Church Church Warden Peter Hodson said: “We have enjoyed having Kerry and Tricia with us and have appreciated the pastoral work, support and encouragement. To show our appreciation Kerry and Tricia were presented with paintings, one of the inside of Christ Church, the other of the inside of St Peter’s, both painted by local artist Ray Twigg. On Sunday April 21, at the 11am service, Christ Church presented a pair of commemorative mugs.”

Rev Kerry Emmett’s last services were on Sunday April 21 at 11am at Christ Church and 6pm at St Peter’s.

Land sold A THIN strip of land behind some properties on Balmoral Road has been sold at auction for £28,500.

Residents had grouped together to bid at the auction but were unsuccessful at securing the plot. They are concerned at any future development of the land and the loss of wildlife habitat.

It is understood that the purchaser intends to divide the land into smaller plots and sell it to the residents to extend their gardens.

One smaller piece of neighbouring land at the auction was bought for £2000 by the residents whose properties back on to it.

Charnwood Surgery in Linkfield Road is small suburban practice with a GP, two nurses and a small administrative team. It has recently formed a Patient Participation Group (PPG) with the aim of identifying issues and improvements to the services it offers to patients. The PPG also provides feedback to the Clinical Commissioning Group that has recently taken over the role of the Primary Care Trust. The PPG was set up in the summer of 2012 and holds meetings on a monthly basis with around 7 regular members and a number of email participants.

One of the PPG’s first tasks was to undertake a patient satisfaction survey to find out how well the Surgery was doing and what were the problems that patients found. The survey included questions on accessing services, making an appointment, experience of the last visit to the doctor or nurse, opening times, environment and help for carers.

In November 2012, 100 copies of the survey were handed out and a high percentage (88%) was returned. The detailed survey results are available at the Surgery or you can download it from the Practice website www.hiranicharnwoodsurgery.co.uk.

Loans now available for adult learners ADULT LEARNERS can access loans to pay course fees from August 2013, after the Government announced changes to the funding of adult education.

For the first time adult leavers aged 24 or above have the option of applying to the Student Loans Company (SLC) for a loan to pay their course fees.

Learners will only need to start repaying the loan once they have completed the course and are earning over £21,000 a year.

A spokesman for Leicester College said: “This new funding means that many more people over the age of 24 will have the opportunity to study on level 3 and level 4 courses, allowing them to experience the related benefits such as increased wages and job satisfaction.”

The loans will not be means tested and applicants will not be subject to credit checks. They will meet 100% of the course fees.

Loans are available for courses including Advanced & Higher Apprenticeships, QCF Diplomas/Certificates at levels 3 and 4, Access to HE courses (full and part-time) and A levels.

Leicester College has a range of full and part-time courses at levels 3 and 4, from hair and beauty to business, IT and care.

A college spokesman said: “Whatever your age, whether you are retired and want to advance your knowledge, are

nearly all (98%) patients describing their experience of Charnwood Surgery as “very good” or “good”. In detail, 97% of patients said that it was easy to get through to someone at the surgery on the phone and 70% of patients said that they can normally get an appointment on the same day. 80% of patients were happy with the current opening hours and 83% are happy with the current GP consultation times. Most patients were pleased with their treatment by the GP (80%) and the practice nurse (90%).

The environment of the surgery, such as the layout, ease of access, and cleanliness, was described as good by 84% of patients but 9% said that they could be overheard at reception and were not happy about it.

Problems raised by the patients were addressed in an Action Plan, which is on the website or available at the Surgery.

Improvements have included installing a TV in the waiting room to increase confidentiality, a taller chair for patients with mobility problems and extension of GP consultation times. Many patients have caring responsibilities and the Practice aims to increase support for these by raising awareness of voluntary organisations and Carers clinics.

A spokesman said: “The PPG welcomes comments, both good and bad, on the service provided by the Surgery and you can use either the Comments and Suggestions Form on the website or hand a note in at Reception addressed to the Chairman. This is a time of rapid change in the NHS and the views of patients are becoming much more important and valued.”

The Mountsorrel couple, who have lived on Market Place for the last 59 years, say the secret of a happy marriage is “working together and living within your means”.

The pair married at St Mary’s Church, Osgathorpe in 1953. Ted, now 84, worked at BUSM in Leicester for 48 years and Jenny, 83, at Hall & Earls Hosiery factory. They have a son Michael and grandson Joshua.

Crime rate falling CRIME FIGURES for 2012/13 show that all recorded crime in Leicestershire fell by 13.7% compared to the previous year.

Soldiers remembered POPPIES WERE laid on the graves of Mountsorrel soldiers that lie in a cemetery in France.

Mr Keith Hassall, Chairman of the Mountsorrel branch of the Royal British Legion and the County Standard Bearer, visited the cemetery at Nouexles-Mines as part of a tour of the battlefields of Neuve Chapelle and Loos.

He laid poppies on the graves of three Mountsorrel men who were killed in the First World War: Pvte John T Simpson, Sgt Ernest Foulds and Cpl Wilford Baum.

Magic museum A NEW Exhibition that delves into the spellbinding world of magic and illusion opened at Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery last month.

LOROS lottery win THE OWNER of a Mountsorrel nursery is celebrating after winning the top prize in a lottery.

Helen Telford recently opened Castle View Day Nursery in Mountsorrel in collaboration with her business partner Jayne Butler. After being open for just five weeks, Helen was delighted to receive a telephone call from LOROS Lottery Manager Liz Singleton, giving her the news that she had won that week’s first prize of £2,000.

Not expecting to win but wanting to support a worthwhile local charity Helen pays her lottery money once every four weeks when local collector Tony calls at her house. Helen said: “When I first joined the LOROS lottery I was new to the area and wanted to support a local charity and LOROS do such a fantastic job supporting local families. I was shocked when I got the phone call, I never win anything!”

Liz Singleton added: “It was lovely to hear that Helen’s win has come at such a good time for her. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supports the Advertise in the

Pick your own gripes FOR THE first time Charnwood Borough Council is asking people to choose their three biggest environmental gripes so officers can take action during its award-winning Don’t Muck Around campaign later this year.

The campaign, which was originally launched in 2011, uses a combination of enforcement and education to significantly reduce dog fouling, fly-tipping and litter across the borough.

The campaign was crowned the best environmental campaign in the UK at the 2012 Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards. It has also won a number of awards for the way in which it has been communicated.

Visitors will be able to see items from blockbuster films including Harry Potter’s broom and the ‘One Ring’ from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There will be displays based on Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and the Narnia tales amongst others, as well as mechanical dancing dolls based on Cinderella and Prince Charming, and character puppets from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which date from the 1940s.

The ‘Magic Worlds’ exhibition has been created by the V&A Museum of Childhood. It invites people to explore the magical realms of their favourite fantasy tales and recall legendary conjuring feats of the finest stage magicians through the ages.

The exhibition brings together a huge range of costumes, tricks, paintings, ceramics, beautifully illustrated books and posters, games, optical toys and dramatic puppets.

The exhibition also charts the rise of the professional magician from fairground trickster to celebrated performer, with a display of original posters and famous illusions. There will be exhibits looking at modern illusionists and the role of the Magic Circle, and collections of classic children’s conjuring that can still be enjoyed today.

Other highlights include a look at the photographs of the Cottingley fairies taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths in 1920 and the public fascination they created.

‘Magic Worlds’ opened at New Walk Museum on Saturday May 4 and runs until September 29. Admission is free.
