Concerned residents object to library plans 36 local libraries could be closed due to County Council cutbacks and the meeting was organised by the Council as part of the consultation exercise. The County says it wants volunteers to come forward to run the library with its support. Parish Councillor Stan Coats and library user Sarah Maynard-Smith, a New centre continued from page 1 quested Section 106 developer contributions for the Memorial Centre, as well as £200,000 for Mountsorrel library and £400,000 for sporting facilities at Halstead Road/Cufflins Pit Lane Man jailed continued from page 1 ation to have three metal plates inserted into his damaged eye socket. The court heard the cause of the incident was over a debt of £62.50. Both men claimed they acted in self defence after Mr Smith initially attacked them, and denied kicking or stamping.

Borough Councillor, have organised petitions objecting to the plans, collecting around 1700 signatures. They are concerned that volunteers will not be found and the library could close. Sarah MaynardSmith said: “There are a lot of children in our community that use the library. Books are expensive and many of our libraries are in real pockets of social deprivation, closing the library denies children easy access to books. “Reading for pleasure is closely linked to high attainment at school,
Vandalised A MEMORIAL bench for a four year old Mountsorrel girl who was killed by a pet dog has been vandalised. The bench was provided by the grandparents of Lexi Branson and located next to a children’s play area on School Street, Syston, where Lexi used to play. The bench featured a plaque in her memory. on September 19 to consider the consultation results – around 8000 people have given their views via library surveys, attending meetings and petitions. there is a big drive on literacy in schools so it makes this proposal really short-sighted. “There are also plenty of old people that use the library and it may be their only contact with others in the day.” Mountsorrel Parish Council is seeking to negotiate a contribution of £200,000 for the library from a property developer with plans to build 130 homes on West Cross Lane. This Section 106 developer contribution may be enough to keep the library open under County Council management. A County Council spokesman said: “The County Council wants to encourage communities to come forward and run their libraries, with council support. It is far too early to speculate on library closures.” The County Council cabinet will meet

Cyclists with big hearts TWO MEN from Mountsorrel cycled 250 miles to raise funds for a charity that provides public access defibrillators. Andrew Allen (29) and Steve Robinson (31) aimed to cycle to all of the ex footballer Fabrice Muamba’s clubs over four days, starting from Bolton’s Reebox arena, to Birmingham City, then to Arsenal’s Emirates stadium and Wembley, where Muamba captained the England U21s. Parish council notes THE MOUNTSORREL Annual Parish Council meeting was held on May 12. Cllr Brian Allard was elected as chairman for 2014/15 and Cllr Paul Harris was elected vice chairman. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on May 12. It was agreed to contribute £155 to Mountsorrel Heritage Group towards the exhibition at Mountsorrel library to commemorate the outbreak of WWI. It was agreed that Will Antill assist the Parish Council in progressing, implementing and managing two major community schemes at the agreed amount of £850 per month, reviewed after 12 months, for a two year period. The schemes relate to the Memorial Centre and Jelson’s development off Halstead Road. Councillors discussed the future of Mountsorrel library. It was reported that if the Parish Council could find funding of around £15,000 to £20,000 per year for the next five years this may keep the library open. It was suggested that the Mountsorrel Educational Fund could be asked for some financial contribution. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on June 9. Ms Lian Mundy was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the Council. It was reported that a local business was sponsoring the roundabout at the entrance to the village by Hill Top garage. Litter had been cleared and planting undertaken to enhance the appearance of the roundabout. Leicestershire County Council have written to the business owner saying that the work should not have been done and that no further work should be carried out.
Scouts’ airborne adventures MOUNTSORREL SCOUTS spent an exciting weekend gliding at a Leicestershire airfield. The Scouts of 1st Mountsorrel were taking part in a weekend camp at the gliding centre at Husbands Bosworth airfield. Before taking to the air, the Scouts spent some time on a flight simulator. Rachael Chinnery (13) said: “We basically had a remote control and on the computer screen there was a helicopter – it was helping us to learn how to control something and how to use the gears and gliders. It was good fun, it wasn’t easy to use but it was a good challenge.” The scouts were nervous before taking to the air but were thrilled by the experience. “You just feel complete weightlessness, it was amazing” said Thomas Woods (11). Gary Tagg, Scout Leader of 1st Mountsorrel Scout Group told us why he would definitely consider doing another gliding camp in the future: “With all the facilities we’ve got it works really well, it’s something we’ve not organised before. It’s been fantastic, really, really good!” Visit www.charnwoodscouts.org.uk for more information on how to get involved with Scouting and
New venture fulfils travel dreams AN EXPERIENCED traveller has launched a new venture that aims to help those less able to fulfil their travel dreams. Mountsorrel’s John Perkins (pictured below) started ‘I Can You Can’ in June 2014. He said: “Whatever the barriers to fulfilling your travel dreams I can help. From accompanying aged, nervous or inexperienced travellers, to providing travelling companions who are qualified nurses. “I have many years’ experience as a volunteer on pilgrimages to Lourdes and my career in business involved travelling the world. So meeting the challenges of travelling, and of supporting those with special needs while travelling, is second nature to me.” John, a father of three grown children, worked as a finance director for

international companies with offices in Japan, Hong Kong, the USA and Europe. He has visited over 45 countries and 360 cities. He said: “I like people, I love travelling. Helping those for whom finally seeing the Mona Lisa or visiting a long lost relative has always seemed an impossible dream, is very rewarding for me and can be life changing for them. “After a member of my own family required similar support due to old age and illness I realised I was ideally placed to address an unmet need for supported travel, so I created ‘I Can You Can’” www.icanyoucan.org.uk 0116 230 1751

A planning application from developers Sowden group and William Davis for a £25million, 15 storey tower on a derelict plot on the corner of Highcross Street has been submitted. The site is next to the John Lewis car park. The building would have 150 flats, a food outlet and a Decathlon sports store.

Event organiser; Ian Shonk said: “The Mountsorrel REVIVAL was seven months in the planning, with the idea to bring a ‘carnival’ back to the village after many years, based on an old style village fete but with a modern twist. “I decided, if I was going to organise the event, I’d have all the things I like – hot-rods and custom cars, longbow archery, river trips, swing jive, live music, vintage stalls, and the centre-piece of the day – soap box racing!” With relentless rain all morning, and the river starting to flood, the decision was made to close down the outside parts of the Revival. The river field and soap box race track had to be closed for safety, but, said Ian, “people just wouldn’t give up!” Visitors still came and the sun finally came out. There was even an impromptu soap box race and hot-rod show outside the Youth Cafe. Local band ‘Lockdown’ played in the Buttermarket, belting out rock numbers and creating a real ‘vibe’ in the street as visitors took in the stalls and attractions. ‘Chicas Locas’ Burlesque performed on the Memorial Hall stage, and gave burlesque workshops demonPic: event organiser Ian Shonk strating how to ‘walk with style’ The American Civil War Society commandeered Castle Park, setting up camp with their Cannon, the firing of which opened and closed the Revival. Radio Leicester’s ‘Clueless’ reporter; Julie Mayer came to Revival to find the final clue of the programme - in the barrel of the cannon, which she had to fire live on air to win her challenge. One visitor said: “I really enjoyed myself and you could see the scale of Ian’s vision for this event, it was obviously well organised and would have been a big hit with the public if only the weather had been better. I congratulate Ian and I think I speak for many people Pic: a pedal powered soap box car when I say I hope we can have the event next year.” Ian said: “The whole community came together in support of the Revival. Larks and Owls Some people are like larks, and wake up early Before the cockerel’s even finished crowing – They leap out of their beds, invigorated, All bright eyes and quite eager to get going But other folk prefer the evening hours – These ‘owls’ are more productive late at night. They need to set a very loud alarm clock And wouldn’t dream of rising till it’s light Of course, we all adapt to life’s requirements: Our waking time depends on our routine, And every person’s body clock is different – We’re larks or owls or something in between! I’m wondering which group I now fall into – a lark? an owl? I simply cannot choose, I realise as I doze off by the fireside, these days my body clock is set to SNOOZE! From Peggy Clarke

Exhibition looks back at Mountsorrel as it was in 1914 AN EXHIBITION commemorating the start of the Great War attracted 370 visitors. Held at Mountsorrel library from August 4-9, the exhibition was jointly organised by the Mountsorrel Heritage Group (MHG) and the Mountsorrel Royal British Legion.
Art on show in Rothley A GROUP of local artists are staging an exhibition of their work. The Soar Valley Artists’ 12th Annual exhibition will be held in the Rothley Centre on Mountsorrel Lane on Saturday & Sunday October 11/12 from 10am to 5pm
It featured portraits of the men who left the village to fight and which battles they were part of and sadly in some cases where they gave their lives and are now at rest. At the outbreak of war the population of Mountsorrel was 2,417 (according to the nearest census, in 1901) and 83 village men were killed in the conflict, 3.4% of the total population. “You can imagine the impact on the families left behind, some of them containing as many as seven fatherless children” said John Hingley of the MHG. There were also many photographs of the village as it was in the early 1900's to underline the many businesses both large and small which would have been affected either directly or indirectly by the reduction in the numbers of working men either for the duration of the conflict or permanently because they didn't return from the battlefields. The Mountsorrel Heritage Group and the Mountsorrel Branch of The Royal British Legion would like to express their thanks for the support of all who attended the exhibition and their contributions for the sale of books and fridge magnets etc.

This photo was taken in France probably mid 1917 – there’s no date or any annotations but it is known that one of the men was killed that autumn. Thanks to visitors to the exhibition we can now name three of the men and believe that we know the family of a fourth but are not certain which particular man from the family it it is as several served in Quarry units. Obviously we’d dearly like to be able to put names to them all. They are all serving in a mix of Royal Engineer Quarry units in and around the Marquise area of north-western France. The board in front of them says “Mountsorrel Quarrymen RE.... doing our bit”. From service records we can say with certainty that there’s a mix here of men who went in August 1914 with 5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and were later transferred as their skills were needed in the quarries behind the front, and men who were enlisted directly from home to work in the quarries. From Mountsorrel Heritage Group.
This photo is of an event that is mentioned in “The Fifth Leicestershire. A record of the 1/5th Battalion the Leicestershire Regiment, T.F., during the War, 1914-1919”. By Captain J.D. Hills, (the book is freely available on the internet as part of Project Gutenberg) and comes from a Heritage Group member whose grandfather is in the photo. The an-

Mountsorrel commemorates the Great War TO MARK the centenary of the start of the Great War the Royal British Legion in Mountsorrel organised a short series of commemorative services.
PHOTOS: CLIVE RASIN
The first, a village interdenominational church service, was held at St Peter’s church on Sunday 3rd August and was led by Reverend Canon Derek Goodman. A congregation of some 80 people attended the service which had a theme of Commemoration and Thanksgiving for the sacrifices made by villagers during and in the aftermath of the Great War. This was followed on Monday by
services, led by Mr E Stacey of Christchurch and St Peter’s, of commemoration and re-dedication at Castle Hill War Memorial and later at the Peace Garden. At both memorials wreaths were laid by Miss Ellie Neal, the great great granddaughter of a local soldier who fought with the village territorial company of the 5th Battalion the Leicestershire Regiment. The Exhortation at both was read by Col R Martin OBE, County President and Branch President of the Mountsorrel Branch of the Royal British Legion, whose grandfather, Major WF Martin of the Leicestershire Yeomanry, is one of those remembered at the Castle Hill Memorial. These services were each attended by some 70 villagers together with Councillors from Parish, Borough and County. Throughout the week the Parish Council marked the occasion by flying the Union flag at the Parish Rooms and arranging for the Castle Hill Memorial to be floodlit. The Mountsorrel Branch, Royal British Legion also supported the week long exhibition, “Mountsorrel 1914 – The village and the Men Who Went to War”, organised by the Mountsorrel Heritage Group and held in Mountsorrel Library. The Branch would like to thank all those who supported these events.
Remembrance Sunday Although we have just marked the outbreak of World War I` with the events described above we will in a few weeks time be launching the 2014 Poppy Appeal. The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been one year (1968) since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, since the start of operations, we have suffered 353 killed in action and a further 51 have died subsequently from wounds. In addition we have several thousand wounded in action many of whom will carry wound and disabilities for the rest of their lives. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities including, Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities is leading the way in delivering that support. Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £34 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: • Running our Care Homes and Break Centres • Providing a Benefits and Money Advice service which has helped over 11,000 individuals to date; • Making direct Grants totalling £24 million awarded to 42 organisations; • Making individual grants totalling £18 million to over 22,000 beneficiaries.
More detailed information about the work of the Legion can be found at http://www.briti shlegion.org.uk /about-us/whowe-help Mountsorrel has a proud tradition of generously supporting the Poppy Appeal and the 2013 Appeal has to date raised £4238 please continue that support, give generously and wear your poppy with pride. If you would like to help with this year’s appeal please contact johncdoyle@talktalk.net The annual Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service organised by the Mountsorrel Branch, Royal British Le-

Future of park & ride THE FUTURE of Leicester’s park and ride network, which includes the site in Birstall, is under discussion after the costs of subsidising the service rose. The Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse network is jointly run by the City and County Councils and last year they subsidised the service with £664,000 – up from £526,000 the year before. The scheme cost £l.737 million to run last year and generated £1.073 million in
Support dementia PEOPLE IN and around Leicester are being urged to help the Alzheimer’s Society support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia. There are already thought to be 12,000 people with the condition in Leicester and Rutland. By 2021 that number is like to reach 16,000. Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby. The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.” Volunteers will be matched with people with dementia who share similar interests. They will gain valuable experience and develop a sense of value by providing a much needed and worthwhile voluntary service.” The Leicestershire and Rutland Locality of Alzheimer’s Society provides ongoing training and support to all volunteers who will be CRB checked and who should be over the age of 18. Potential recruits are asked to contact Suna Tilley on 0116 231 1113 or email: suna.tilley@alzheimers.org.uk
income. In 2011 there were 700,000 passenger journeys rising to 830,000 last year but the rise in usage has not been sufficient to eliminate the subsidy, say the City Council. The City and County Councils have jointly drawn up a number of options for the service: • mothballing one of the sites • improved marketing and promotion • increasing ticket prices and charging for concessionary travel Peter Osborne, County Council cabinet member for transport, said: “We are working with our colleagues at Leicester City Council to determine the best way to fund the Park and Ride services to the city. We have jointly drawn up a number of options with the City Council for the service and we are carrying out an assessment to determine which approach will give Leicester’s Park and Rides a sustainable future. The County Council has not yet met to publicly discuss the future options for the Park and Ride facilities.” • In August, Leicestershire was one of seven areas in England to benefit from additional government funding for sustainable transport schemes, receiving £160,000. The money will not contribute towards the park and ride scheme. Peter Osborne said: “The funding will be used to continue a range of successful initiatives including improved information at bus stops, encouraging parents and commuters to choose more sustainable ways to travel and loaning mopeds to young jobseekers to help them find and access work.”
The Mountsorrel Educational Fund is administered by a Body of Trustees who, at their absolute discretion, can award grants from the funds available to the Charity to assist young people in pursuing their education. The Chairman of the Trustees, Mr Brian Allard, said: “Grants amounting to £95,287 were awarded by the Trustees in 2013 to local school pupils, students and those in Higher Education and Training. The Trustees will be considering at their meeting in October applications from persons who are planning to extend their education at college and university.” Applications can be made from persons under the age of 25, who are pupils or former pupils of Christ Church and Saint Peters Church of England School, or who have been or whose parents have been resident in the electoral parish of Mountsorrel for at least 12 calendar months. The forms of application are as follows: Application Form 1 – University/Higher Education Application Form 2 – A Level/College Equivalent/Apprenticeships Application Form 3 – Educational Visits (Primary to A Level) Application Form 4 – Music Tuition (Primary onwards) Application Form 5 – Other Applications All of the above forms can be obtained by sending a stamped addressed envelope detailing which Application Form is required, to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mr P R Blakemore, KDB Ac-

Safe stolen
A SAFE was stolen from Budgens supermarket during a raid by burglars. The incident took place sometime between 3.54am and 4.06am on Tuesday July 29. Intruders entered the store after smashing a ground floor window cutting through the metal shutters. Two ATMs were attacked but nothing was stolen from them but a safe was stolen from the premises containing cash. Detective Constable 837 David Ball is investigating the incident. He said: “From enquiries conducted so far we believe a black car similar to an estate type vehicle may have been used by the suspects, if you heard or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area during the early hours of this morning we need to speak to you. “Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help with our enquiries. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.” Anyone with information in relation to any appeals featured on this site is asked to contact the relevant officer on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for the officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number.
