A MOUNTSORREL Youth Group has won an award for its ‘Come Dine with Us’ project.

A group of five young people from the Sorrel Youth Café developed the project based on the concept of the TV programme Come Dine with Me and won the prestigious Pride of Charnwood Youth Group of the Year Award. As part of the wider Catch Up Friday programme which is open to all young people over 14 on a Friday evening, Graham, Jemima, Chloe, Ethan and Shannon have been experimenting with recipes from around the world over the last year. In November 2014 the group submitted an application to the YOUR Shire Community grant scheme operated by Leicestershire County Council. It was awarded just under £2500 to organise and deliver 12 events over the next 12 months. For the group however Come Dine with Us is much more than just about cooking. Kath Sedgley, the group’s Youth Worker, said: “As part of organising the events the group have developed their planning and communication skills, made the move from being in the kitchen to being out front with the customers and have taken control of the project. It’s been a privilege to see them grow in confidence and take on more responsiContinued on page 2

Café continued from page 1 bility.” The evenings are normally organised for the last Friday of each month and each evening has a different theme. The cost of each meal is £5 and all the money raised is reinvested in the project. Shannon Tedds, one of the group members, said: “We have all really enjoyed trying new dishes and then serving them to our customers. I am pleased that we have won the award because I think we have worked hard as a team and developed a lot of new skills.” If you are interested in finding out more about the project, other Café activities or the work of the Youth Café, then Graham Lloyd can be contacted during Café opening hours on 0116 2375289 or through email glloyd@sycafe.org The Youth Café, on The Green, ran a series of music workshops in April. They were led by Music in the Community Unit of Loughborough College. Lecturer Matt Toole said: “Our students are very excited about the opportunity to inspire people in the local community and to share their passion for music. They see the workshops as a fantastic opportunity for both themselves and the community.” The workshops are part of the Sorrel Youth Café Catch Up Friday’s programme that aims to introduce and develop young people’s interest in a full range of activities. The Café is open every day to young people aged over 10 and who live in Mountsorrel and the surrounding villages. Youth Officer, Graham Lloyd said: “Our partnership with Loughborough College is just one of the ways we are trying to develop our Friday night programme. Their expertise and access to equipment will mean that we can offer things that we couldn’t afford to do on our own. It’s a great relationship.” www.sycafe.org
Council’s action on potholes POTHOLES IN roads are being filled more quickly, say Leicestershire County Council. Improved maintenance techniques have reduced the number of potholes, and they are being dealt with more quickly. Improvements introduced by the council include a shift from reactive to proactive maintenance, including tackling cracked patches of road, before they become potholes and better reactive maintenance, such as sealing of joints around potholes. More patching in the spring and summer and a 60 per cent increase in the amount of surface-dressing is also helping as are hotboxes, which ensure asphalt is available every day Due to these improvements, the number of potholes has fallen from
7,276 in 2012/13 to 5,471 over the last year, despite similar winter road temperatures in both years. The average time to tackle the most serious, category one potholes on main roads has reduced from 7.5 days to 3.1 days. A council spokesman said: “Thanks to a series of improvements, fewer potholes are forming on the county’s roads and we’re dealing with them
more quickly. “While we can never prevent all potholes from forming, we’re determined to tackle them more effectively.”
Man charged A CRASH on the A6 near Mountsorrel on September 6 last year resulted in the death of Harjit Singh Thaliwal .Mr Thaliwal was 27 and from Quorn. Girls visit Mountsorrel Railway project 150 GUIDES, Brownies and Rainbows from Quorn helped improve a nature reserve when they met at the new Mountsorrel Railway Station off Swithland Lane. The girls, along with their leaders, and volunteers for the project, walked the restored track to the nature reserve, where they took part in sowing wild flower seeds and bark rubbing, before assembling at the picnic area for their walk back to the station. Over the past seven years community volunteers have spent their free time restoring the Mountsorrel Railway line and creating a nature reserve. The new Mountsorrel Station will allow passengers to ride heritage trains along the railway, when the station and railway open to the public in October. Project leader, Steve Cramp, was presented with a donation from the group, along with hand painted bird boxes, which the girls had made. A new community heritage centre and tea room is being created alongside the restored railway on the Rothley/Mountsorrel village border. This involves relocating an historic granite barn from Kinchley Lane, Rothley and the old Time Office from Mountsorrel Quarry. When complete early next year, the centre will detail the history of Mountsorrel and Rothley and provide an inclusive day out for the whole family. Fund raising is now focused on the phase two Mountsorrel Railway Museum and Exhibition buildings in the base of the old Nunckley Hill
quarry. The museum will allow historic railway vehicles from the old Mountsorrel quarry to be displayed to the public and the exhibition building will tell the story of the geology of the Charnwood Forest, the history of quarrying in Mountsorrel and the story

of the Mountsorrel Railway. Planning permission has already been obtained for the construction of both buildings, which will cost approximately £70,000. Contractors Carlin Construction from Nottingham were successful in winning the contract to build the heritage centre, as well as the new station platform at Nunckley Hill. The new platform will allow visitors to join and leave the trains running on the restored Mountsorrel Railway. Mick Robins of Carlin Construction said: “We were in awe of the work that the volunteers have already done and it is wonderful to have the opportunity
to work on such an exciting and unique project, that has so much community support.” Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to the Mountsorrel Railway Project should contact steve.cramp@heritage-centre.co.uk or visit www.mountsorrelrailway.org.uk for more information.

Village party for whole community THE VILLAGE will be hosting a spectacular summer party in August with the return of the Mountsorrel Revival. The event will be held on Sunday August 9. Organiser Ian Shonk said: “The Mountsorrel REVIVAL extends the length of the village from the village green to Stonehurst Farm, and across the river onto the festival field and alongside the lock and pub gardens. “Despite the biblical rain last year – the response from exhibitors, traders and the public was fantastic. Everybody seemed to get the friendly, retro concept of the event and wanted to do it all again this year. We’ve added more space for classic cars and caravans, included a fun run for the energetic, fancy dress for the youngsters, a dog show with classes like ‘waggy-est tail’ and ‘best canine trick’. The highlight this year will be the Street Parade, returning to Mountsorrel after an absence of many years.” Other attractions include soap box racing, hot rods and custom cars on the Honda forecourt, archery on the festival field, burlesque and dancing in the Me-
morial Hall, river trips, the American Civil War encampment with their cannon and all the stalls and retro shopping. Entries are still being taken for the Soap Box Racing and trading spots. Check out the website for all the details, photos and how to get involved. www.mountsorrel-revival.co.uk Follow Revival on facebook to be kept up to date with what’s happening. The event starts on Sunday August 9 at 11am with a soap box car procession at 12noon from the Green. It closes at 5pm.

Mental health helpline A TELEPHONE helpline for those suffering a mental health crisis has been set up by Leicestershire NHS. The number is 0808 800 3302 and it offers support to those with urgent mental health needs. It is free from most mobile networks and is open between 2pm and 1.30am, seven days a week. A face-to-face service has also been set up. These are delivered in three locations. No appointments are necessary for the Leicester City sessions which are:: • Thursday and Friday, 10am-5pm at Apex House, Charles Street • Saturday, Sunday & Monday, 10am-10pm at The centre Project, Granby Street An appointment-based service operates in Ratby from 8am-8pm seven days a week Dr Mohammed Al-Uzri, Clinical Director for Adult Mental Health and Learning Disability Services, said: “These new services are part of our commitment to providing more support in the community instead of hospital. The telephone helpline and face-to-face sessions will help us provide care to those people whose needs would otherwise intensify, and possibly end in a hospital admission. “If you know of anyone who is struggling with their mental health and would benefit from talking to someone confidentially, please share with them the details of these new services.”
Tony Brooks of Kingfisher Road will be riding the 140km Velothon in Wales on June 14 and the Prudential London Ride 100 on August 2. Tony (58) will be riding with work friend Simon Wilkinson (53). “On last year’s London ride 100 we had to put up with the remains of hurricane Bertha so hopefully the weather can’t be as bad this year” said Tony. “The course was shortened slightly for safety reasons as a result of the atrocious weather conditions. We’ve decided to go back for more punishment this year in the hope of better weather and being able to tackle the full 100 miles!”
The Velothon starts in Cardiff and is a 90 mile ride around south Wales including challenging climbs in the Brecon Beacons. The duo will be raising funds for children with Cancer UK. Tea with writer MEMBERS OF the Mountsorrel book group enjoyed an afternoon tea with published writer Harriet Evans. Started seven years ago, the book group meets monthly at Mountsorrel library. A spokesman said: “We are sometimes lucky enough to win proof sets of new books from the publishers for our members to read and review. “We won a set of the latest offering from Harriet Evans called ‘A Place for Us’ which came with an offer to win afternoon tea with the author. So we were absolutely delighted when we heard that we had won and that Harriet would join our book group meeting and take us all for afternoon tea!” The group spent the afternoon at Templers in Rothley where Harriet spoke about her latest book and writing career and answered questions. “It was a privilege to spend some time with a young, popular author and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience” said the spokesman.

Craft workshop opens SMARTI PAINTS Limited, a social enterprise, has opened a craft workshop at 8 Cromwell Road in Mountsorrel. With the help of regional funders, Smarti has been able to open the enterprise for more users, providing a creative outlet for the whole of the community. The enterprise has been community based since July 2013 targeting people with disabilities and carers. Since opening the workshop, Smarti has set up workshops for pregnant ladies, mums and tots, children, carers, disabled users, and adult classes. Spokeswoman Victoria Robinson said: “The crafts that are on offer include candle making, candle decorating, paper crafts, and sewing, woodwork, Decopatch and home décor items. For the children, the crafts are all educational based, but in a fun way, such as salt dough, games, messy play and keep sake items.” Smarti will be holding an open event on June 18 from 5pm – 8pm where members of the public are invited to see the workshop and join in one of the short sessions. A contribution of £1 per person is requested for the mini workshops. “There will be an opportunity to book on workshops, purchase craft supplies and buy homemade quality gifts” said Victoria.

Alan Clarke, who now plays regularly, said: “I never thought that I would have the opportunity to play football again as I had a bad knee injury. Now taking part in Walking Football means that I can once again take part in the game at a pace that means my injury does not limit me.” The sessions run at Soar Valley every Thursday from 6pm - 7pm and at Loughborough Leisure Centre every Monday between 6pm and 7pm. Gardeners who have opened before will tell you it is a very enjoyable and positive experience” said the spokesman.

We look forward to seeing you!”
Help with money A CHURCH is set to run three free sessions to help people in Mountsorrel get on top of their household finances. Members of St James in Birstall wanted to help their local community to best handle the economic climate so underwent specialised training from UK charity Christians Against Poverty and are now offering this opportunity to other communities in the Soar Valley. Now they are offering the short course aimed to putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure. Money coach Gill Chester, who will be leading the sessions called the CAP Money course, said: “With households feeling the squeeze on their disposable income, we’ve all got to get a bit more savvy about our money to get through these tough times. If you know how to save and budget effectively, it can have a hugely positive impact on the whole family.” St James is one of more than 1,000
churches of different Christian traditions across the UK who are regularly offering the course, as they work together to positively impact the communities around them. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. She added: “We hope that we can help people, quietly and confidentially, take control rather than relying on guess work so they can plan for the future and weather the storm.” The first course takes place in the Bower Room, Christ Church, Rothley Road, Mountsorrel LE12 7JU starting at 7.30pm on June 3. To find out more about the CAP Money Course visit www.capmoneycourse.org and to book your place on the course telephone 0116 2120236.

It was agreed to research costs for providing defibrillators in the village. It was reported that £119 had been raised at the Parish Carol Concert for the Air Ambulance service. Cllr Coats and Cllr Lemon have met with representatives from the County Council about the future of Mountsorrel library. It is to be proposed that the War Memorial Trust could take over the running of the library which would require grants from the Parish Council and possibly the Mountsorrel Educational Fund. It was proposed that the Parish Council budget £15,000 for a grant towards the library, and that the Mountsorrel Educational Fund be asked for a donation of £10,000. The Mountsorrel Youth Café on The Green has asked for a donation of £20,000. It was reported that any donation would be to enable youth workers to operate in the Youth café and not the running of the actual café. It was agreed to donate £20,000. It was agreed to increase the precept for 2015/16 by 8.2% to £177,263 as there had been no increases for several years and to allow for grants to be made to the youth café of £20,000 and £15,000 to the library, and for the new Memorial Hall and provision of facilities at Halstead Road. The budget for the year 2015/16 will be £251,334 with £65,381 coming from reserves leaving a precept of £177,263. The precept is the Parish Council’s component of the Council Tax. Charnwood Borough Council will provide a grant of £8690. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on February 9. It was agreed to set up a working party to progress the proposals regarding the future of Mountsorrel library. Mrs Lynne Twigg was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the council. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on March 9. Comments were made about the increase in burglary in the village. It was agreed to write to Chief Constable Simon Cole about what steps are being taken to combat this crime and for feedback to be given to the Parish Council. It was agreed to ask Lafarge to fund the provision of two defibrillators in the village. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on April 13. It was reported that 21 parishioners attended the Annual Parish meeting held on March 19. A business plan for the future of Mountsorrel library had been submitted to the County Council. Further discussions will be held in June and a decision made in September. It was agreed to provide the Youth Café with £5000 from its £20,000 grant, to request details of what funding they have had withdrawn and to have sight of the Café’s accounts up to March 31, 2015. Prior to the May election when all councillors stand down, Chairman Brian Allard thanked his fellow councillors for their contributions over the last four years. It was reported that Cllr Stan Coats would not be seeking re-election in May.
