Heritage on show at new centre THE MOUNTSORREL and Rothley Heritage centre, opening sometime in April, will tell the story of the two villages’ history. The creation of the centre has been led by the volunteers behind the Mountsorrel Railway Project, who restored the one and a quarter miles of the Mountsorrel railway, a project that started in 2007 and was completed last October. The heritage centre, located on Swithland Lane near the junction of Halstead Road and Kinchley Lane, is almost complete. It was recently visited by Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan, who was given a tour of the centre and the adjacent nature trail. Project spokesman Steve Cramp said: “The heritage centre building will be an historic granite barn that used to stand a few hundred metres away on Kinchley Lane, Rothley. This charming barn was some 200-300 years old and had an interesting history including being used as a

Waitrose continued from page 1 New jobs at the store include customer service, hospitality and supermarket assistant positions. It is also working closely with the local Jobcentre Plus team to help recruit its team, which has so far resulted in 10 unemployed people being put forward for an interview. The deadline for applications has now passed. All successful applicants will become members of the John Lewis Partnership, entitling them to exclusive benefits, including leisure and learning subsidies, shopping discounts and a share in profits in the form of an annual bonus. Last year, Partnership staff received the equivalent of almost six weeks’ wages in bonus. The jobs are being created in addition to the existing Budgens employees

working at the store, who will also become Partners in the John Lewis Partnership. Waitrose spokesperson, Tim Stanton, said: “This is our first ever store in Mountsorrel, so it’s really encouraging to see so much interest in the branch and people who are eager to join our business. Having received such a positive response to our recruitment drive, we are looking forward to bringing a fantastic new team together to welcome our new customers in May.” • The new store will have 31 additional car parking spaces as Waitrose intend to demolish the petrol station and car wash. The car park will be fitted with security gates that will be locked during non-trading hours.

Flipping pancakes against the clock

A PANCAKE race went down flipping well at the Sorrel Youth Café. The event, organised by the Mountsorrel Community Team, was originally planned to feature races on The Green but wet conditions underfoot saw competitors move inside the café to speed-toss pancakes against the clock. Life saving volunteer wins award A CHARITY volunteer from Mountsorrel who has trained hundreds of people in life-saving CPR has been recognised for his work at the Leicester City Sports Awards.

Pic: Alan Harrison White with his award

Alan Harrison White (59), a retired cardiac specialist nurse who gives his time for the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) and the British Heart Foundation, was presented with the Community Award at a ceremony last week. Alan has travelled to all corners of the city and county, visiting schools and sports clubs with a vital lifesaving message. While on his travels, Alan shares his lifesaving skills and knowledge on cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how defibrillators work. He explains the symptoms to look for that could be signs of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS), a group of heart conditions which claim the lives of 12 young people aged 12-35 every week in the UK. Alan said: “I was honoured to receive the award. I’m not sure who put my name forward,

but it was a really nice surprise to be nominated, let alone win. “I’m pleased to be able to use my skills to help people. CPR is easy to learn and the more people who know how to do it, the more lives potentially can be saved. “I train a lot of young people and I like to think I’m training the next generation of life-savers.” The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), a local charity, was set up in memory of Rothley teenager Joe Humphries, who collapsed and tragically died from SADS in October 2012 while out jogging. Chair of the JHMT Steve Humphries said: “Alan’s work is amazing. He’s visited more than 50 school assemblies, spoken to more than 10,000 pupils and more than 500 teachers to tell them why CPR is so important. “He is a true gent. He visits local sports clubs as part of Joe’s Mini HeartStart for Sports – our training scheme that gives local clubs a chance to learn life-saving skills for free. “He and his wife Jill have trained 602 people in CPR on behalf of JHMT and the British Heart Foundation. “Alan’s achievement is truly fantastic but what’s even more amazing is that we know he will not stop here – he’ll keep going, keep sharing his knowledge and spreading the vital message – that these deaths can be prevented.” To find out more about the work of the JHMT and its life-saving training for sports clubs, visit www.jhmt.org.uk.

New school in Birstall

MOUNTSORREL POST

A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson said: “Designs for the new 210 place school are still being finalised, but we should be in a position to submit a planning application in the Spring. “Plans are for the school and recreation facilities to open in September 2017, with the build expected to cost between £4 and £4.5m, subject to more detailed design work. Community facilities include a community room, kitchenette and changing rooms, with the school hall also being open for community use. All Birstall schools are part of the Lionheart Academies Trust and it has applied to take on the new school. The community hall attached to the new school will be shared with the community outside school hours and will be designed so that it can be closed off from the rest of the school building to keep the school secure. There will be an outdoor community sports area. The school will have its own playground and playing field. As part of the original section 106 agreement associated with Hallam Fields, the developer Jelson was required to make a financial contribution of £2,050,000 for a new primary school and associated recreation centre. A County Council spokesman said: “Discussions with Jelson and the Palmer Tomkinson Trustees over matters relating to the new school and the developer’s obligations under the section 106 are on-going.”

MAR 2016

A NEW £4.5million primary school is to be built on the Hallam Fields estate in Birstall, opening in September 2017.

Parish council notes

MOUNTSORREL POST

MAR 2016

A FULL meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on November 9. Cllr Steve Haywood reported that Mountsorrel Revival 2015 had been a great success and that the 2016 event would take place on Sunday August 14. It was agreed that the 2016 event organisers be offered the use of the playing fields, gardens, car park, parish room and cricket pavilion at no charge. It was agreed to contact developer Jelson Ltd to arranger a meeting regarding the planned Halstead Road development. It was agreed to write to the County Council objecting to the possible closure of Mountsorrel library and its replacement with a mobile service. It was agreed to donate £500 to the Royal British Legion. A celebration of the Queen’s birthday will be held in Mountsorrel on June 10/11/12 and the council agreed to allocate £1000 to the event. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on December 14. Cllr Neil Asher reported that the crime figures for the last two months had increased and that he wanted to know the reason for this and what action is being taken. It was reported there had been an armed response visit on Martin Avenue two weeks ago. County Councillor Peter Osborne reported that the County Council was keen to keep the library open as a community facility. It was agreed to spend £170 on recording equipment and loudspeakers. A meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on December 15. Seventeen members of the public were in attendance. The Chairman, Cllr Brian Allard made a statement about the library. It was agreed that, in principle and subject to legal assurances, the Parish Council take on responsibility for making all payments relating to the construction of the Memorial Centre. It was agreed to object to the County Council’s proposal to close Mountsorrel library and replace it with a mobile service, to review with the War Memorials Trust the original joint submission to the County Council and to prepare an updated proposal to secure the future of Church House as a library and learning centre. It was agreed to make applications to the Mountsorrel Educational Fund and the Relief in Need charity for financial contributions towards the operation of Church House in light of updated circumstances and information. Mr Will Antill paid tribute to Mr Stuart Richardson who has died recently and who did much for the village.

Mountsorrel lock gets repaired 2,000 VISITORS came along to see behind-the-scenes at Mountsorrel Lock in February, as one of a series of public open day events which have been held throughout the winter. Mountsorrel lock on the River Soar was built between 1780 and 1794 and it was one of the earliest constructed locks, as the navigation progressed south. Barges first passed along this navigation on October 26, 1794. Visitors were given the rare opportunity to walk along the original 200-yearold brickwork, learn more about the history of the canal and see up close one of the finest examples of working heritage in the world. The top and bottom gates at Mountsorrel were last replaced in 1998, and weigh 1.4 tonnes and 2.3 tonnes respectively. The lock chamber is 28 metres long, 4.6 metres wide and 3.4 metres deep and it can hold 438,000 litres of water, the equivalent of over 5,000 bathtubs of water. The works here cost £125,000 and involved highly skilled craftsmanship. The top lock gates have been repaired and restoration work has been done to

the brickwork. Silt, which has been building up over the last 20 plus years and can seriously hinder boat movements, has been scooped out of the lock as well. The works started on February 15 and the lock is planned to be operational again by the second week of March. Andrew Morris, customer operations manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: “It was great to see so many people come along and learn about what we’re doing here and why it’s so important. “Repairing the lock gates at Mountsorrel Lock is part of the essential maintenance needed to enable the local canal network to be used and enjoyed by boaters, cyclists, anglers and walkers. It’s a busy lock and last year it saw over 1,178 boats travel through it.”

As part of its maintenance programme, the Trust will be working on around 164 lock gates across the country as well as carrying out repairs to aqueducts, reservoirs and tunnels. Many of the biggest projects are carried out during the winter months to minimise the impact on waterway users. Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, said: “We care for a remarkable network of historic waterways which are still working just as they were designed to 200 years ago. Keeping them open and safe requires a huge amount of planning, investment and craftsmanship and involves a wide range of experts, from civil engineers and hydrologists to heritage experts and ecologists.” To find out more about the Restoration & Repairs programme and the open days happening across the country go to www.canalrivertrust.org.uk/restorationand-repair-open-days.

I’ll have some of this and I can’t resist them, for I’ve never been known to refrain But before I can say that I know where I am, my shop’s overflowing again I aim for the till with my wares for the day, I can hardly see over the top The people behind me pull up in dismay when they notice the size of my shop

The Shopaholic I think I’m deluding myself when I say that my shop is a weekly event For I’m back with my list on the following day as it seems that I’m never content The cupboards are full & the freezer is too, but there’s always that small something more My menu demands it, what else can I do? So I eagerly head for the door With my trolley in hand and with wings on my feet I go back where I was yesterday The trolley is only in case I should meet with some ‘must have’ new offers today For example, there’s ‘buy one, get one free’ so I need to be quick on my toes

It takes just a moment for them to discern that my exit could take quite a while They begin with commendable threepoint turns to pursue an alternative aisle The till roll is changed as I wait in my lane. What a clever and wise thing to do They’ll certainly need to replace it again when I finally make my way through That vital component I can’t seem to find when I’m home and I start to unpack But my smile just got wider for it would appear in the morning I’ll have to go back In conclusion I’m listing the things I must do for my forthcoming shop I simply can’t wait to discuss it with you, but one question HOW LONG HAVE YOU GOT? From Peggy Clarke

Discussions held to Guide’s keep library open top award PLANS TO close Mountsorrel library and replace it with a mobile service have been put on hold. A consultation on the plan has concluded that further discussions with the landlord of the Mountsorrel library should take place before recommendations on a way forward be made to the cabinet of Leicestershire County Council on April 19. A County Council report published in February stated: “Constructive discussions with the landlord of the Mountsorrel library are currently ongoing which may present an opportunity for Mountsorrel War Memorial Trust, or a similar body, formed by the landlord to take over the running of the library…” The County Council is withdrawing support for 36 village libraries to make budget savings, and is transferring day to

New service for local families THE SORREL Youth Café is working with Christ Church and St Peter’s Primary school to offer a new service to the parents and families of children attending the school. In response to feedback from parents, the two organisations have joined forces to make the service available outside of school premises. Nicky Frisby, who is the Family Outreach Worker, Senior Learning Mentor & Play Therapist at the primary school, said: “This is an extension of the service we already provide, but instead of being based at school, parents and other family members of children attending the school, can now arrange to meet with me at the Café on a Thursday morning.” The move to the Café is intended to offer a new opportunity to parents who may feel uncomfortable about meeting on school premises or for those who prefer the informality of the Café. Nicky said: “Family members will obviously want to talk about their children, but I am also happy to support them to address other issues that may affect family life.”

Issues such as a child’s behaviour, health and wellbeing, confidence or educational progress are all things that can be discussed. The service will also enable parents to gain access to other important services, such as support with housing problems, debt, basic provisions such as food and household items, parenting and other community issues. Graham Lloyd, Youth Officer at the Café, said: “This is an excellent way to build links between the Café and the school. We both want to see children grow up in a happy and stable home.” The service will offer three 20 minute appointment slots every Thursday morning. Those interested should contact the Café on 0116 2375289 or just pop in. If you are interested in finding out more about the Café, volunteering or supporting it in any other ways please give Graham a call on 07775 616001 or email ruelloyd@btinternet.com

Volunteers needed at community dig MORE THAN 50 people turned up at a meeting to find out more about a project to ‘dig up’ Rothley’s past. Hosted by Rothley History Society, visitors listened as Dr Julie Attard from Leicester University’s Archaeological Society explained how she and her team, assisted by local volunteers, plan to excavate 35 one metre square plots in the village. Ursula Greaves from Rothley History Society said: “Dr Julie will choose 35 suitable sites and then a test pit, one metre by one metre and up to a metre deep, will be carefully dug out at each site. A member of the team will be in charge at every pit, but three to four volunteers will be needed to help with digging, sieving, sorting, washing and transporting.” At the meting Dr Attard explained that Rothley had been chosen because “there are strong research questions to be answered”, for example, was there any prehistoric activity in what is now the centre of the village? and was there a Roman building there? Dr Attard assured her audience that great care would be taken to replace the soil and the turf of each pit and nothing would be visible after six months. The test pit owners will be presented with a souvenir report at the end of the project, as well as their finds, if the museum does not want them. “There were 2,000 finds when a similar dig took place in Anstey two years

and meets at the Slate Restaurant, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel every month. Although it is looking for a range of new members the group is looking for people with chairing and finance experience. Further information about the group and the events it is organising can be found by visiting the website: mountsorrelcommunity-team.co.uk For those who want to join the group, please contact Ian Shonk on 01905 843777 or Graham Lloyd on 07775 6161001.

ago, so hopefully the Rothley event will prove equally successful. “There is no upper or lower age limit for volunteers, and having a test pit dug in your garden can be an exciting family event” said Ursula. The project will be in the village between July 16 and 31. If you are interested in helping with the dig in any way, call 0116 230 3500 or email ufgr45@gmail.com. As well as volunteering to provide one of the dig sites, the organisers are also looking for people to assist with several tasks, including taking photos and videos of the dig. The Rothley Dig is part of the Charnwood Roots project.

The group has already developed a terms of reference, group logo, a website and undertaken

some planning for the REVIVAL. Ian said: “We have already achieved a lot in the short time we have been going, but we are now looking for new members to help us develop an exciting programme. We are particularly keen to hear from people who have a bit of time and want to help Mountsorrel be and feel a great place to live”. The group currently has 9 members

The Mountsorrel Community Team is the name of a new residents’ group that is both supporting the REVIVAL in 2016 and also putting their name to a number of other events throughout the year. Graham Lloyd, Youth Officer at the Sorrel Youth Café, said: “The aim of the group is to build on the success of last year, bringing the community together through organising and delivering village events and activities. The Café is supporting the group because I saw the fantastic impact last year’s RIVIVAL had on the community. It was great success.” The group started to meet in October last year to evaluate REVIVAL. It soon became clear that if the event is going to continue and grow, we needed to establish a working group of enthusiastic residents. Ian Shonk, REVIVAL co-ordinator, said: “The success of last year has

Trainer Sarah Woodhouse is leading the Buggyfit sessions. She said: “Buggyfit is an outdoor exercise class completely designed with the needs of new mums in mind, allowing them to bring their babies in the pram or buggy. After having a baby, life appears to absorb all your time with ‘baby activities’, and clinic visits, but studies show that taking time out for yourself, especially to exercise, is fantastic not only for your fitness levels but mental state too, relieving stress, improving stamina and making for a happier mum. Buggyfit comes with the added bonus of exercising with likeminded women enabling you to make new friends and benefit from the social fun these classes bring.” She added: “The social and mental benefits are of course not the only focus at a buggyfit class. Each Mum gets an appropriate workout to suit her fitness level, be it back to fitness from a fit pre pregnancy or starting from scratch.” For more information please don’t hesitate to contact buggyfit trainer Sarah Woodhouse:
