Mountsorrel Waitrose opens THE NEW Waitrose in Mountsorrel was officially opened on May 5 by Nicky Morgan MP. A total of 60 new jobs have been created, adding to the 40 existing Budgens employees. It was reported that crime rates had increased and PCSO James Johnson said increased police patrols were being carried out. County Councillor Peter Osborne said that the County Council did not feel the number of burglaries had increased as a result of the reduction in hours that street lights are switched on. He said the County Council is investing £23million on improving street lighting by fitting LEDs. Councillors discussed possible locations for defibrillators to be installed in the village. It was agreed to budget £20,000 to fund the Mountsorrel Youth Café. It was agreed to make no changes to the charges for: the parish room, cemetery, allotments, sports clubs and preschool group. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on January 18. It was agreed that the management of the new Waitrose store be invited to the Parish Council for a general discussion. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on Monday February 8. Cllr Mick Lemon stated that the Chairman of the Parish Council, Brian Allard, is responsible for the building costs of the new Memorial Centre being increased by £100,000, due to delays in proceeding with the lease. It was agreed to defer discussion to the meeting on March 14. It was agreed to write to County Councillor Peter Osborne, complaining about the charges for using waste recycling sites and to add the complaint to the County Council’s consultation on its website. Mr Will Antill, owner of the Mountsorrel library building, and the Parish Council’s advisor, reported that he had met with officers from the County Council

who had accepted that the County Council could not sub-let the building without Mr Antill’s permission. Mr Antill said the County Council is obliged to pay all costs for the building for the next 18 years and that mothballing the building would not be economically viable. It was agreed that a revised submission for retaining the library be submitted to the County Council. It was agreed to obtain quotes to upgrade the village website. It was reported that the position of the Mountsorrel Relief in Need charity is that it is unable to support the running costs of the library, but may under certain circumstances be able to award a grant or donation. Chairman Brian Allard stated he would not be seeking re-election as Chairman at the Annual Parish Council meeting in May. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on March 14. PC Glen Spiby reported that the police office in Budgens had now closed and they will move back in if an agreement can be reached with Waitrose. They will relocate to Rothley in the meantime. Charnwood Borough Council’s Monitoring Officer Adrian Ward attended the meeting, to advise councillors on declarations of interest. Mr Martin Fagan of Community Heartbeat gave a presentation on defibrillators. The purchase price is between £1500 and £2200 and the annual maintenance cost is £126. It was agreed that Mr Fagan suggest locations within the village for units, and to detail the costs. It was reported that all deliveries to the Marshall Honda garage site by transporters will cease by the end of March 2016. It was reported that the local police team will be keeping an eye on the blocking of residents’ driveways on Watling

letter saying he hadn’t got a ballot place, so he applied to run for LOROS. “When I heard I hadn’t got a spot in the London Marathon, it just made me want to run it for LOROS more, especially because it was the day after my granddad died” said Jake. Ray used a number of the services at LOROS when he was ill, including day therapy, complementary therapy, home visiting, counselling and support from the MND nurses. Ray was on the ward at the Hospice when he died last September. “Granddad became frail and although the MND affected him gradually, by the end, he was really bad,” added Jake, who is a student at Leeds University. “It was so annoying because he was the same person inside, he just couldn’t physically do things. “It got to the point where he couldn’t leave the house, which meant my nanna couldn’t leave the house either because he needed full on care. “The support granddad

Day nursery is ‘outstanding’ say Ofsted OWNERS, STAFF and children at a Mountsorrel day nursery are celebrating after being rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. “We are extremely proud of this recognition” said Jayne Butler who along with co-owner Helen Telford, runs the Castle View Day Nursery on Watling Street. “We have worked very hard to provide a setting in our local area which we feel offers children exceptional quality of care” she added. In February Ofsted inspectors found that: “Children are extremely happy and confident. They feel valued and cherished as all their needs are fully met by nurturing and attentive staff. All care practices are of an exceptionally high standard. Children’s behaviour is excellent. They share and take turns willingly, showing a mature understanding of how others feel.” Jayne said: “Our ethos is encouraging children to explore for themselves new situations, resources and experiences. We take the children out of the setting to experience the wider community on a
regular basis and we fully embrace what is on our doorstep. “We go to the park, the hills, the river, the library, the farm and we use local transport to take us into the surrounding villages, for instance to support the children’s interest in growing we recently took them to a garden centre in Quorn. We love to go to the Beacon and make dens and have treasure hunts.” She added: “We employ 18 members of staff in whom we invest a lot of time and effort to ensure they are qualified and experienced but that

Comment was made that there are groups of people that are regularly seen openly taking drugs at various locations in the village. It was reported that the County Council will not be changing the speed limit on Swithland Lane near the junction with Halstead Road. The Parish Council has safety concerns about the junction. It was agreed to complain to the Chief Constable and to seek support from Mountsorrel’s MPs The council agreed to purchase three defibrillators for the village at a cost of £5835. A NEW tourist attraction created by volunteers has opened in Rothley. The Mountsorrel and Rothley Heritage Centre opened in April – it has a coffee shop, an exhibition of local history, a community room that features art exhibitions and the Nunckley Nature Trail. It is open between 10am and 5pm, seven days a week and admission is free. The centre is the culmination of a project that began in 2007 when a group of volunteers got together to restore the Mountsorrel railway – a disused section of GCR track running from Rothley to Mountsorrel. That task, and the construction of the Mountsorrel station, was completed in 2015. Now the volunteers are working on the heritage centre site, building demonstration stonemason huts to recreate

Planned residential care home Library future
A PLANNED 66 bed residential care home would create 42 new jobs, say the developers.
MOUNTSORREL LIBRARY is set to be taken over by a community management team. of care – general and dementia. The site is a vacant plot that is part of a site that was granted planning permission for 45 dwellings in January 2014. Planning application : P/16/0836/2
Local issues raised at meeting THE FUTURE of Mountsorrel library, housing development and school places were all raised by members of the public at Mountsorrel Parish Council’s annual meeting on April 19. Chairman of the Parish Council Brian Allard opened the meeting by presenting a summary of the Council’s work over the previous year. He said that the Parish Council will build a new Memorial Centre and manage it. Borough Councillor Leigh HarperDavies reported that the council’s core strategy had been adopted. A resident commented that we are likely to end up with continuous development between Leicester and Loughborough and that the villages will lose their identity. Borough Councillor Richard Shepherd said that as a planning authority, Charnwood would not permit developments to join up but conceded that the area of separation between villages has become narrower. He said that Mountsorrel has taken its fair share of development up to 2028 and that the adoption
8
of the core strategy means the council has strong grounds to refuse development outside village boundaries. A member of the public commented that there were insufficient school places. County Councillor Peter Osborne said Rothley school is full and “where would we put a school in Mountsorrel?” He said the County Council had a limited amount of money and that 52% of the budget goes on adult social care. He said he supported the continued future of the library and that it would take more time to find a solution that would keep it open. Members of the public reported speeding traffic on the Kingfisher estate, lorries using local roads as a shortcut, lorries crossing the weak bridge on Sileby Lane and blocked drains on Church Hill Road. PC Glen Spiby reported that the village has two PCSOs for the first time. Antisocial behaviour is an ongoing concern, he said, which is down to a few individuals. Formal warnings and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts are used. Speeding is another police priority and speed checks will continue to be carried out. PC Spiby said there were 321 reported crimes in the year which
was considerably less than previous years. There had been 20 burglaries. PC Spiby said he wanted to promote NHW and Community Speedwatch. Members of the public reported traffic chaos at Mountsorrel school, speeding traffic on Rothley Road, and drug taking on the playing fields. Mr David Williams, the headteacher of Mountsorrel primary school, said the school could accommodate new children if they were given the funds to redesign internally, and that £580,000 has been allocated. He said the school was improving and expected a rating of ‘good’ at Ofsted’s next inspection. Mr John Doyle, the chair of the Mountsorrel Café trustees, said the café was now five years old, and is a needed facility for young people. It has been supported by the Parish Council and the Mountsorrel United Charities. He reported on the positive impact it has made on the lives of individual young people.

A County Council spokesman said: “We are having positive discussions with the landlord with the intention of transferring Mountsorrel library to community management later this year.” The council is working with groups to transfer 36 libraries to communities, to save £580,000 per year. The Mountsorrel Library Partnership would take over the library. It consists of the Mountsorrel War Memorials Trust, Mountsorrel Parish Council, Mountsorrel Education Fund and Mountsorrel United Charities. Mountsorrel library is in a building leased by a local resident and the handover may require the County Council to either surrender its lease to the landlord or grant a sub-lease to the Mountsorrel Library Partnership.

MOUNTSORREL POST
JUN 2016
28 STATION RD, CROPSTON
A DONATION of £500 has helped the Sorrel Youth Café re-open after it was seriously damaged by burglars. A break-in on Monday April 4 saw the front door damaged and the till stolen, containing £20. On April 10 there was a second break-in through the front door and the burglars tried to steal the safe, which was left unopened outside the property. The Soar Valley Rotary club has stepped in to help the café, which was facing a large repair bill. President Richard Hilliar said: “The Centre offers support and engages young people at the heart of the community, so we were shocked and saddened to learn of their recent problems and when approached we were happy to donate £500 from our charity reserves towards the immediate cost of repairs and continue to support this excellent project.”
local people a chance to take part in some hands on archaeology. The most important event will be a community dig in Rothley. The village has huge archaeological potential and there are clues to Rothley’s early history waiting to be discovered in back gardens around the village. Beneath the earth are objects left behind by the people who lived in Rothley hundreds, even thousands of years ago. “This evidence can be pieced together to help us understand what was happening in Rothley in ancient and medieval times and will allow us to build up a picture of how the village developed in the period before we have written records,” explains Charnwood Roots Project Manager Julie Attard of Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust. The dig will be led by the Charnwood Roots team with help from archaeologists from the University of Leicester and local volunteers. “We’re looking for around 150 volunteers who would be willing to help excavate 30 test-pits in back gardens and public spaces across the village. Test-pits are small, only 1 metre square, but in
our previous community digs in Anstey and Whitwick they have yielded hundreds of artefacts spanning many thousands of years. Every test-pit is unique and tells its own story about the history of that part of the village. In Anstey we found prehistoric artefacts in back gardens on the edge of the village in a modern housing estate. I am very excited to see what we will discover in Rothley.” The dig is suitable for everyone and families are welcome to take part. All training and equipment will be provided and no previous experience is necessary. People can also volunteer to help wash and process the finds if they cannot dig. Rothley’s Big Dig will take place over the weekend of Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July and if you would like to volunteer you need to be available on both of these days. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Julie at charnwoodroots@le.ac.uk or telephone 0116 252 5946. You can find out more about the whole project at www.charnwoodroots.org or follow @CharnwoodRoots on social media.

Revival is back this August MOUNTSORREL REVIVAL returns to the village on Sunday August 14. The festival will once again bring old-style vintage fun to the village, featuring a street parade, music, dancing and lots of interesting stalls and attractions. With over 6,000 people attending last year, it was a busy day - every food stall was sold out by mid afternoon! With the summer on the way, it’s time to start thinking about building your Soap Box racer for this year’s competition. The race is a centrepiece of the Revival and the race teams will take part in the street parade, as well as race on the Cricket Club Track. All sorts of wild and wacky machines take part – from the ‘serious engi-

neering’ to the entertaining ‘just for the fun of it’. Details of the race, entry forms and a video of last year’s racing can be found on the ‘Mountsorrel-revival’ website. Ian Shonk, the race organiser said: “We can promise you a great afternoon’s fun – and some wonderful handmade
trophies to challenge for” Entries for both Stall-holders and Race Teams are now open. Spaces for both are limited and on a ‘firstcome’ basis. Details are available on the ‘Mountsorrel-Revival’ website. Admission to the Mountsorrel Revival is free and the event runs from 11am to 5pm along the length of the village from The Green to Stonehurst farm.
The Burley Houses, Tempest Road were opened in 1932 and were designed by architect Stockdale Harrison. The trustees of the Burley Almshouses charity are holding an open day on August 6 between 10am and 4pm, where visitors will be given a tour of the properties. Residents are required to have lived in the county of Leicestershire for a period of 10 years, or have a husband or parent who has. All the properties are supplied with a monitoring device linked to Charnwood Lifeline providing a 24 hours call out service. AN AWARD of £42,000 of funding for improvements has transformed a Rothley bowls club. The Soar Valley Bowls club on Loughborough Road received the grant from Sports England. It used it to redesign the area around the greens and to install an automatic irrigation system.” “The club is now in a first class position to provide excellent facilities for the new bowling season” said club spokesman Stewart Warrington. He added: “We are especially keen to encourage non bowlers both male and female to take up the sport, and to help achieve this the Club is offering a free year’s membership to all ages. So why not come along and join us, we would be delighted to see you, and don’t worry about equipment or dress as we are very relaxed about newcomers and can supply equipment to help. “We would also welcome any estab-

THE TENTH Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston will take place this summer on the weekend of June 25 & 26. All money raised from the event will go to LOROS and the villages’ new Good Neighbour Scheme. Spokeswoman Linda Bennett said: “We have a number of different gardens for you to visit across the two villages; some large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! But all for you to enjoy. “Events include refreshments, plant sales and a plant swap, bring along a plant from your own garden to swap for something else, as well as a trail for children and even a string quartet!” Gardens will be open from 2-6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens. Look out for the fuchsia coloured balloons! “Why not put the date in your diary now, then come along with your family and friends, and support this great community event, and help us raise money for a very worthwhile cause. We look forward to seeing you!” said Linda. For more information about this event go to www.tcog.org.uk or contact Linda on 0116 2363872 or email Linda@tcog.org.uk
