Village picnic for the Queen MOUNTSORREL CELEBRATED the Queen’s 90th birthday in June with a community picnic. The Green was traffic free for the afternoon and there was maypole dancing, impromptu rounders and football

matches, stalls and games for children. A team from the Sorrel Youth Café provided hot food and the Scouts laid on drinks and cakes. 90 year old VIP guests were treated to afternoon tea in Sorrel Court which was organised by Geoff and Sue Wain-

The event kicked off with a colourful parade from The Green to Stonehurst Farm - there were dozens of stalls and a real variety of attractions to keep visitors entertained including a dog show, soap box racing, hot rod and classic cars, archery, music and burlesque dancers. “What a day!” said Ian Shonk from the Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) who organised the event. “This year we had over 80 stalls and took over the playing fields as well to take in everybody who wanted to come and join us. “The furthest visitor came from Canada, having arranged their holiday to coincide with friends taking part in the soap box race. “With more people each year dressing up and taking part, the Mountsorrel Revival is developing a cult status.” Debbie MacRae, chair of MCT, said: “It is a great atmosphere and so heartwarming to see so many of you out enjoying the day and supporting your local businesses.” Comments on facebook included: “A brilliant day out. Many thanks to everyone involved” : Jez Fletcher “It was a great day, first time we’ve been and we will certainly be back next year” : Helen York “Well done to all the organis-

Village library plans THE TRANSFER of Mountsorrel library from the County Council to community management is expected to be concluded soon.

A source told the Mountsorrel Post that the process is “progressing quietly but positively”. Mountsorrel library is in a building leased by a local resident and the transfer will involve the County Council surrendering the lease for an agreed sum. The library will then be offered to Mountsorrel Parish Council for it to operate. In June, the Parish Council agreed in principle to contribute £20,000 a year to the library for the next 18 years. In the last issue of the Mountsorrel Post we reported on a County Council document that identified a Mountsorrel Library partnership. It erroneously stated that Mountsorrel United Charities and the Mountsorrel Educational Fund had entered into the partnership when this is not the case. The Mountsorrel Educational Fund has offered the library a financial contribution.

Longest serving councillor MOUNTSORREL’S LONGEST serving parish councillor stood down as chairman in May. Cllr Brian Allard (79) first joined the council in 1964 and has served 28 of these 52 years as chairman over three different periods, the longest spell being his last: 1995 to 2016. He remains a member of the Parish Council. “I’ve tried to serve the community and all its parishioners” he said. “I’ve attempted to listen to all points of view – I don’t make the decisions, the council makes the decisions.” Born in Mountsorrel in what is now the Mountsorrel Hotel, Brian was a pupil at Christchurch and St Peter’s school and Humphrey Perkins and worked as an administrator and financial controller with the Co-op movement before retiring in 1996. Mountsorrel has been the fastest growing community in the Soar Valley and pressing for the extra facilities that additional housing brings has been

one of the challenges facing the parish council over the years, said Brian. In 1995, the Parish Council provided a new cricket pavilion on the Memorial

playing field and was instrumental in the opening of the Soar Valley Leisure Centre in 2004. The Parish Council also made a contribution to the Mountsorrel Library and Learning Centre in 2007. Other highlights, says Brian, were the Millennium Celebrations, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebration in 2002 and Diamond Jubilee in 2012, which saw the beacon lit on Castle Hill. The parish council awards a Certificate of Commendation to community figures. “It has been a pleasure to present this” says Brian. It recognises the contribution that people have made to the village.” In May, Brian’s fellow councillors presented him with some cricket vouchers for the county ground, in recognition of his service to the parish council. Looking back over his many years on the council, Brian says: “I feel pleased to have had the opportunity to serve the community.”

Stairlift

8

When my phone rang the other day just as I was having forty winks after lunch, I noticed it was a 'withheld' number which I don't usually answer because it nearly always means its someone trying to sell me something, but as I was feeling charitable I picked up the receiver. A pleasant lady introduced herself as Sarah, said she was calling on behalf of Bloggs Stairlifts and asked if I suffered with muscular pain. I told her that I do, whereupon she asked if I had a problem with stairs. I explained that I had lived in my present home for six years and had never been able to go upstairs to bed. This really excited her and asked how I managed to get to the bathroom. I explained that it was on the ground floor. She then said that a 'Joe Bloggs' stairlift would be a great help to me. I did try to explain that I didn't think such a lift could be put into my property, but she insisted that they had never come across a home which presented a problem with installation. I couldn't put her off so I eventually agreed to her request that a Representative call round and give me a demonstration. I gave her directions, adding "It is the 5th bungalow on the left and I looked forward to her visit." At that moment the line went dead. — She'd hung up on me. Was it something that I'd said ? A MEETING of the Recreation and Amenities Committee of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on April 18. Mr Ian Shonk from Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) made a request for £570 for annual insurance to cover MCT events, such as Revival and the Queen’s birthday celebrations. The committee expressed concern about the MCT accounts but agreed by a majority vote to award a grant of £570. It was agreed that bees come under the category of ‘livestock’ and cannot be kept on the allotments. It was agreed to spend £70 on repairing a dent in the pavilion shutters on the Halstead Road playing fields. Mountsorrel Parish Council’s annual meeting was held on Monday May 9. Cllr Steve Haywood was elected as chairman of the Parish Council for the ensuing year. Cllr Haywood acknowledged the service given by the previous chairman, Cllr Brian Allard, to the council, which has included 28 years as chairman. Cllr Allard was presented with a voucher to be used at the County cricket ground. Cllr Paul Harris was elected as vice chairman. The annual meeting was followed by the May meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council. A member of the public thanked Cllr Allard for his many years of service to the Parish council and welcomed Cllr Haywood as the new chairman. It was agreed to investigate changing the direction of view of the CCTV camera fixed to the library to give a view of the bus stop and The Green. The Council received a summary from Mr Will Antill of the situation regarding three major projects : the new Memorial Centre, the library and the Halstead Road development. It was agreed that the amount allocated to the Queen’s birthday celebrations be increased by up to £1000 in addition to the sum already allocated. It was agreed to object to a recommendation by the Boundary Commission Advertise in the

that the number of parish council wards in Mountsorrel be increased from two to three. It was agreed to spend £1315 on palisade fencing for the pavilion on the Memorial playing field. It was agreed to seek legal advice regarding the implications of the Parish Council taking on the management of Mountsorrel library. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on June 13. Mr Will Antill reported that the construction of the new Memorial Centre will begin on July 18, 2016 and be completed on July 31, 2017. Mr Antill reported that the County Council wishes to surrender the lease it has with the library and that once the value of the lease has been agreed it will be earmarked for the operation of running and maintaining the library. He requested that the council make a financial contribution to the library until 2033 and other contributors in the village do the same. He also informed members that it is intended the library have charity status and will be offered to the Parish Council to operate. The Council agreed in principle to contribute £20,000 a year for the library for the next 18 years, and that this sum be index linked.

While the service took place the funeral bell of St Peter’s Church was tolled and a bugler sounded Last Post at the Memorial. To coincide with the service the Parish Council arranged for the Beacon to be lit and the War Memorial floodlit for the subsequent two weeks. In the library the Mountsorrel Heritage Group has mounted a small display about the battle and those village men who were lost, this will remain available for view during library opening hours until November.

“In a few weeks the Sorrel Youth Café has celebrated gaining financial support from Tarmac, faced the challenges left from two burglaries and has commemorated five years of providing youth work to young people in Mountsorrel” said Youth Officer Graham Lloyd. Following a successful application to the Derbyshire Environmental Trust, the Café received £5000 via the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund. With the generosity and support of local businesses and residents the café now has a new kitchen. Tim Deal, representing Tarmac said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Sorrel Youth Café. It has been a trying time for the team, so we know how much benefit the improved facilities will bring for uses of the café.” In addition to the kitchen, which was provided by Howdens (Loughborough), the Café was able to redecorate and install a partition wall giving it a new upstairs confidential meeting space. Graham Lloyd said: “On March 11, 2016 the Café had been providing local youth work services for five years and a makeover was a great way to celebrate this milestone. The grant, through the Landfill Fund, has enabled us to replace an old kitchen, which was becoming increasingly hard to use, with a brand new one.” The hands on work of decorating, installing the partition and general cleanup was undertaken by volunteers. David Stewart from Rockhill Carpentry kindly fitted the new kitchen. John Doyle the Chair of Trustees for the Café said: “The support from the community and business has been amazing. There are too many to mention here, but a particular thanks has to go to Tarmac, Mountsorrel for their support with our grant and to British Gas who released nine of their employees for a day to help decorate. A full list of those who contributed will be put on the café window.” To celebrate the new developments a small relaunch of the Café was undertaken by the Mayor of Charnwood, John Capleton in his last week of office. The Café was one of his nominated charities for 2015/16. With its new look and facilities, the Café is now looking to recruit more volunteers to help deliver both its youth and community café work. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Café, volunteering should contact Graham on 07775 616001 or email ruelloyd@btinternet.com
