Trophy on tour!
No. 59
THE PREMIER League trophy made a visit to Mountsorrel in April and a queue of excited young people quickly formed to have their photo taken beside the famous silverware. Since the Foxes famously defied odds of 5,000/1 to lift the famous trophy aloft last May, the Club has taken the trophy on a tour of the Leicestershire region and over 10,000 schoolchildren have had the rare opportunity to relive that historic triumph in person. Mountsorrel United Juniors football club hosted the event at their Halstead Road ground, to help raise fund for a defibrillator to be installed at the site. Alan White from the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust attended, bringing along a mannequin to demonstrate CPR. Mark Forknall, Club Secretary, said: “We are looking forward to working with Alan to deliver further sessions with our junior members to learn vital life-saving skills courtesy of local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.” Alan White from the trust added: “We teach a variety of emergency life support Continued on page 2

Ambitious plan for village museum A PLAN to establish a village museum has been proposed by Mountsorrel Heritage Group (MHG). The museum would be located in the parish room on Little Lane, and contain the group’s archive and a collection of artefacts. The parish council, who voted in April to accept the plan in principle,
would relocate to the first floor of Mountsorrel library. A spokesman for MHG said: “Our village is moving forward, we have a wonderful library, a modern leisure centre and soon a new Memorial Hall.

Workshops for pre school children WORKSHOPS FOR babies and toddlers that aim to develop a sensory based skill set have been launched by Mountsorrel’s Victoria Wright. One of the sessions is called Baby Lingo and uses British Sign Language to enable baby to communicate. It has been featured on BBC Radio Leicester and East Midlands Today. Charlotte is a parent who attended the Baby Lingo workshop with her son. She said: “I wanted to learn a language with my son so I knew when he grew up he would have the basics embedded into his brain so he could go on and learn other languages. I have also had the
benefits of being able to communicate with my son from a much earlier age through signs. The great thing is the more he is learning to talk, the more signs we as parents are able to teach him. I am certain it will open more avenues for him as a child.” Sessions are held all over Leicestershire including Mountsorrel/Sile by, Syston and Loughborough and cost £6 or £44 for an eight week course. Fun knight out at club MEDIAEVAL KNIGHTS jousted on spacehoppers in the concert room of Mountsorrel Working Men’s Club at a banquet organised by the Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT).
MOUNTSORREL POST
JUN 2017
The event marked the anniversary of the siege of Mountsorrel Castle in 1217 when the King sent Sir William Marshall to the village to drive out the French. One of England’s most famous Knights, he fought in the Crusades with Richard the Lionheart, took part in the battle of Agincourt and helped bring about Magna Carta and our current rule of law. In his lifetime he served five Kings and was a member of the Knights Templar. The banquet and tournament was attended by over 100 people all dressed in period costumes for the occasion. “Lords mixed with rat-catchers and highborn ladies danced with peasants, while the hall rang to the cheering for the spacehopper jousting” said organiser and compere for the evening, Ian Shonk. He added: “William Marshall himself entered the hall, bringing the audience to their feet, as they cheered the great man as he was lead to the top table. Each ‘house’ had their own crest hanging over their table and competed for gold coinage bestowed by Sir William for success in the tournament challenges, with the winner being awarded the ‘Freedom of Mountsorrel’,which unfortunately expired at midnight.” Jax Harrison from Loughborough, who was dressed as a Medieval lady, said: “It was a fantastically fun evening, I can’t remember when I laughed so much!” Mountsorrel based caterers, Rival Catering, provided the banquet, expertly dodging Jesters and Swordsmen as they served at table. The MCT would like to thank Mountsorrel Working Mens Club for all their support of the team’s activities and for allowing the Concert Room to be converted into the Castle Great Hall for the event. The next MCT event will be the ‘Mountsorrel REVIVAL’ on Sunday 13 August. Details can be found at www.mountsorrel-revival.co.uk.

The Mountsorrel Railway museum, quarry heritage building, Spinney Trail, the Den building area and the high level seating area and refreshment kiosk are all now open. The railway museum building is in the base of the old quarry and will have railway vehicles with an historic connection to Mountsorrel on display. One of these is the steam locomotive ‘Elizabeth’ (pictured below), the only surviving
steam locomotive from when the Mountsorrel railway was in operation. Also on display are three restored Mountsorrel Granite wagons and a former Bardon Hill quarry Ruston and Hornsby 48DS diesel locomotive and a yellow mineral wagon, both of which are part of the Leicestershire County Council collection and were formerly based at Snibston discovery museum. They will be used for shunting demonstrations. The refreshment kiosk has tea, coffee, Parisella ice cream, cold drinks and crisps and will soon be selling freshly baked Belgian waffles. The Heritage Centre is open daily from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.

LOUGHBOROUGH MARKET has been crowned best large outdoor market at the British Market of the Year Awards 2017. The market was praised for supporting traders with its ‘Try a Trade’ offer, which allows people to have a free stall on the market for a day and 50 per cent off a stall for three months, to help local entrepreneurs grow their business. The awards also recognised the market’s work with Loughborough university, where traders spent a day at the campus and students held a lecture in the marketplace. The aim of the project was to promote the market to students and encourage them to buy local produce. The awards were held by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) and saw markets across the country battle it out to win a coveted award. Councillor David Hayes, Lead Member for Regulatory services and Two Centre said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have won best large outdoor market! Loughborough market is a fantastic part of our town centre and provides not only the Thursday and Saturday retail markets, but also vintage, farmers and festive markets throughout the year too. “Well done to all the team and the traders who ensure that the market continues to flourish and provide local, affordable produce to our residents and visitors to the borough.” Loughborough’s markets are held every Thursday and Saturday, between 7am and 5pm in the town centre. There is also a vintage market every Friday between 8am to 4pm and a monthly farmers market which is held on the second Monday of each month.
Heritage group AT AN Extraordinary General Meeting of the Mountsorrel Heritage Group held on Tuesday May 9 the new constitution of the group was approved by a majority vote of members. The new constitution has formed an integral part of the group’s application to the Charities Commission for charity status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
A Charnwood Borough Council spokesman said: “We received a complaint about three members of Mountsorrel Parish Council following a parish council meeting on January 9, 2017. The complaint related to comments made about the siting of defibrillators and a sound recording was obtained. “In line with our procedures, the council’s monitoring officer undertook a fact-finding review and concluded that none of the comments made were sufficiently serious to warrant any further action or investigation as potential breaches of the parish council’s Member Code of Conduct. This conclusion was supported by one of our Independent Persons who are appointed to be consulted about complaints against councillors. “The Council’s view is that while the process should be as transparent as possible, councillors should not be identified when complaints are unsubstantiated and do not get beyond the early stages of investigation.”
GCR chief resigns THE GREAT Central Railway’s chief executive has resigned after less than a year in post. Andy Munro has resigned for family reasons, say the GCR. He took over from former managing director Bill Ford in July 2016. The GCR say that Mr Munro’s decision to leave will not affect the plans for the £18million heritage museum or the bridging-the-gap project. The new museum will be built at the Leicester North Station near Birstall and is expected to open to the public in 2021. The bridging-the-gap project will connect two sections of the track so that passengers will be able to travel from Birstall through Loughborough, where the line currently terminates, into Nottinghamshire. While the GCR looks to recruit a new CEO, Richard Patching will be the acting CEO.

Parking charges PARKING CHARGES have been introduced at the Outwoods in Loughborough. The award-winning park is managed by Charnwood Borough Council which is introducing the charges. Visitors must now pay £1 a day at the pay and display machines or regular visitors can purchase a year-long pass for £40 which covers two vehicles. Matt Bradford, head of cleansing and open spaces at the council, said: “The Outwoods is a tremendous place to visit and we want to make sure it not only stays that way, but gets even better. “Therefore we need to look at ways of generating extra revenue as the Council does not have limitless resources. We believe the parking charge is reasonable and for regular visitors, the season pass is good value.” The Outwoods has retained the Green Flag Award for the past eight years. The scheme, run by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces in the UK. To apply for a season ticket at the Outwoods, go to www.charnwood.gov.uk/outwoods_par king
Litter pickers tidy village VOLUNTEERS FROM the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley and the Sorrel Youth Café joined forces to clean up the village with a litter pick in May. Young people and staff from the Café worked with members of the Rotary Club to fill eight bags of litter, discarded bottles and drink cans. Working in teams, the litter pickers, young and old, delved into the hedges, along footpaths and down the side of buildings to hunt out other people’s left over rubbish. The partnership between the two groups continues to grow with the Rotary club financially supporting the Café with small annual grants. For the Rotary Club, Peter Bickley said: “The Club is keen to support any initiative that brings our communities together. In working with the Café we are encouraging people across the generations to work on the issues that will help keep our village’s great places to live. It also helps both groups gain a better understanding of each others view’s. The litter pick proved a great success, particularly when we could all see results of all our hard work. Graham Lloyd, the Youth Officer at the Café, said: “Today has been a great opportunity to ask the Mountsorrel community to think again about ways to keep the village clean and safe. Young

MOUNTSORREL POST
JUN 2017
A member of the public expressed his concern at the location of three new defibrillators in the village. He requested an additional defibrillator to cover the north end of the village and the Cromwell Road area. Chairman Steve Haywood reported that the organisation that had installed the defibrillators had advised the council on the preferred locations. It was reported that the Police were aware of the Council’s concerns that children were sleeping underneath playground equipment. The chairman reported that adverts for the vacancy of parish clerk had been placed in numerous locations. The council agreed not to increase its hire charges. The council agreed a precept for the year 2017/18 of £207,276. This is an increase of 7.67% on last year’s precept. The increase will be spent on the library. It was reported that negotiations with the County Council re the future of the library were continuing and that the remaining issue was the employees currently working at the library. Will Antill reported that the new Memorial Centre is on schedule and on budget. Lighting along the path by the memorial centre has been improved, following complaints. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on February 13. The chairman introduced the new clerk, Mrs Lorraine Davies, to councillors. It was reported that Mountsorrel’s Police Community Support Officer is due to leave his post and will be replaced in due course. It was reported that there will be three kitchen areas in the Memorial Centre. It was agreed to spend £8000 on a partition that will separate the small hall from the stage. It will open and close automatically. The building will have two bars, one on each floor. The Mountsorrel Community Team
had asked for permission to use several areas of parish council land and buildings for the Revival event. Permission was granted. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on March 13. Councillors agreed various issues relating to the operation and management of the Memorial Centre including appointing an agent to manage the retail units on a commission of 10 per cent of the rental income. A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on April 10. Chairman Steve Haywood congratulated Cllr Brian Allard who had been chosen to receive Maundy money from the Queen when she visited Leicester Cathedral at Easter. The Chairman reported that a complaint about three parish councillors made to the monitoring officer at Charnwood had been investigated. The conclusion was that there was no case to answer. The council considered a quotation of £24,000 for the replastering of the cemetery chapel. It was agreed that a quotation be sought for patching those areas needing it, rather than the whole of the chapel. Representatives from Mountsorrel Heritage Group presented proposals for the creation of a museum. The council considered the recommendations of the Mountsorrel Major Projects working party and agreed to: • relocate the Police office into the Parish Council’s committee room and to enter into an appropriate agreement • the creation of a museum in the parish room • the granting of a lease to the Heritage Group for the use of the parish room, the parish office and the firstfloor storage area • the relocation of the parish office to the first floor of Church House (currently occupied by the library service) • take over the running of the library service from Leicestershire County Council • to enter into an appropriate lease with the landlord of the Church House

Cigarette starts fire in park A FIRE at Bradgate Park in April was thought to have been caused by a discarded cigarette or a BBQ. The blaze destroyed about 1000 sq.m. of scrubland at 4.45pm on Saturday April 8 while the park was full of visitors enjoying the sunny 20°C weather. Firefighters and park rangers had to contend with thick black smoke as they controlled the spread of the fire which began in an area of bracken litter. SORREL YOUTH Café on The Green continues to widen the range of services it offers the community and is appealing for new volunteers to help it continue and grow.
Graham Lloyd Youth Officer said: “The Café already has an amazing team of volunteers who keep it going throughout the year. However, we are now looking to build on this by recruiting more local volunteers to join us. It’s a really exciting time for the café and it would be great if more residents became involved. He added: “The Café is looking for volunteers with a range of skills, abilities and interests to help in both the youth and community Café parts of its work. “We are not looking for experts, but people who have some time, who can talk to other people and are keen to help. If people have additional interest’s and skills such as crafts, sport or who are good at organising things, then that would be great. The Café is situated in the heart of the village and I want to help it become even more part of the community.” Over the last three years the Sorrel Advertise in the

Youth Café has developed its services to provide support to all parts of the Mountsorrel community. As a youth work charity the Café is always seeking to ensure that its provides educational activities for young people, aged 8 and above. Graham said: “Alongside this however, those involved in the Café believe that young people are not separate from, but part of the community. This is now why we are open between 9am and 2pm every week day to the general public.” He added: “The aim of both the Youth Café and Community Café is to offer a social meeting place that brings people together, offers support and provides educational opportunities. Weekly groups for young people receiving additional educational support and regular sessions for budding young singers, already happen or are planned. “Financial support from the Parish Council, Mountsorrel United Charities, the Peoples Lottery and the Derbyshire Environmental Trust over the last few years means that the café has now been refurbished and is great place to be for people of all ages. However, it cannot do this without volunteers.” In addition to looking for volunteers for its day to day operation, the Café is also looking for a new treasurer. The existing treasurer is seeking to retire after being involved with the café since it started. If you are interested in finding out more about the Café, its work and volunteering, please give Graham a call on 07775 616001 or email glloyd@sycafe.org

BIRSTALL FIRE and Rescue Service held a taster day to encourage women to join the fire service. More than 100 women attended, taking part in ladder climbing, equipment lifting and a blindfold test to see how they would cope navigating inside smoke fuelled buildings. Kelly Walker, 39, of Mountsorrel, who has spent the past 15 years working with children who have been expelled from school, was keen to switch to fighting fires instead. She said: “I just came to look around really, but they got me doing everything and when I struggled they were really supportive.
“My friend’s husband is a firefighter and he suggested I come along. “As a woman I don’t think it would be a problem being a firefighter at all, as long as I was fit enough.” Remi Brewin, 17, of Hamilton, went along and is now set on a role in the fire service. She said: “I’ve always wanted to be in the public services and doing this has been difficult but really good fun. “I’ve realised I’m not very strong so dealing with the ladders was hard but they gave me a lot of encouragement and this is what I want to do.” Andrew Brodie, the assistant chief fire officer, said he was pleased with the turnout. He said: “We’ve had a lot of people throughout the day. The women we’ve seen today are exactly the sort of people we want to recruit.” In Leicestershire, only three per cent of firefighters are female, while another three per cent are from nonwhite backgrounds. 12
