A SIX year old boy from Mountsorrel has become the youngest ever member of Carl Gunns’ Birstall boxing gym to achieve a gold training certificate. Lui Sweeney has been attending the gym for a year. “He’s a quick learner” said Carl Gunns. “He’s a quiet boy, he listens to what you tell him and if he’s doing it wrong he puts it right. What he has achieved is outstanding.” Lui, a pupil at Mountsorrel primary school, says he likes sparring best. Mum Emma said: “Coming to the gym has given him confidence and a bit of discipline.” Advertise in the

MOUNTSORREL’S ANNUAL parish council meeting was held on May 8. Cllr Steve Haywood was elected as chairman for the ensuing year, and Cllr Paul Harris as vice chairman. A member of Mountsorrel Heritage Group presented a report on the action day held at the Peace Garden and made some requests regarding the site. Sgt Rod Smart presented the crime figures. He reported that burglaries of sheds and buildings within the curtilage of a dwelling were now recorded as ‘burglary dwelling’, having previously been classed as ‘burglary non-dwelling’. A meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on June 6. The appointment of the new parish clerk, Mrs Lorraine Davies, was confirmed. The council considered the recommendations of the Memorial Centre working party and agreed to appoint Simply 1 to develop the Memorial Centre’s website and online booking system at a cost of £1950 and to spend £550 on a broadcast quality promotional video. The centre’s hire charges were agreed. Two receptionists and one caretaker will be appointed. The clerk’s hours will be increased to full time and her job description will now include the management of the Memorial Centre for a period of up to 12 months. A meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on June 12. Councillors were given a presentation on the work of the Charnwood First Responders. It was agreed to make a grant donation of £500. It was agreed to arrange a site meeting at Blue Granite Mobile Home Park on The Green to discuss concerns raised by residents. Councillors considered a report on the Sorrel Youth Café and the future of youth provision in the village. It was agreed to defer the matter to the August 2017 meeting. The council agreed that a new post of dog warden be established of 6 hours per week, subject to authorisation by Charnwood Borough Council.

Parish Council notes

The granite circle around which poppy wreaths are placed has grass and flower beds around it. Last summer Pic (top): Noel Wakeling at work in the Peace Garden the Mountsorrel Heritage Group (MHG) approached the Parish Council with plans to improve the site which resulted in an action day in November 2016 which saw pruning, trimming and planting. Chris Berry, spokesman for MHG, said: “Since then there has been further group and individual initiatives not only to keep the Peace Garden tidy but also to plant vegetation with hints of red in berries and flowers to complement the poppy wreaths. The consistent intention has been to plant easy to maintain shrubs, bulbs and plants in extended flower beds which now lie inside the granite wall boundary while robust shrubs, saplings and ivy vines are trimmed or restricted to expose the marbling of the local granite. Local people have also taken the hint by not only keeping He added: “Mountsorrel Parish counthe garden tidy but also supporting with cil has been kept informed of actions donations of colourful plants.” and progress and it continues to provide

Park & ride fares THE COST of a day ticket from Birstall’s park and ride will increase from September 4. The price will rise from £3 to £3.50, the concessionary fare will rise from £1 to £1.50 and a group ticket – for a car and five people – will increase from £3.50 to £4. Those buying long term tickets will see large reductions in price: a 52 week ticket will drop from £420 to £320 and a 26 week ticket from £230 to £160. The park and ride service is provided jointly by Leicester City and Leicestershire County Council and receives an annual subsidy of £500,000.

Assistant City Mayor for the environment Cllr Adam Clarke said: “We know that cost is a key factor when people decide how to make their journeys, so we’ve looked at how we can made our Park & Ride services more attractive to those who regularly drive into the city centre. “Under the proposed new, simpler pricing structure, a season ticket holder who commutes to the city centre five times a week would pay just over £1 per day to leave their car in our secure car parks and travel into the city centre on a comfortable bus, in designated bus lanes, with free Wifi. “Compared to the costs of all-day parking in the city centre, this clearly represents good value for money, and we hope that it will encourage more commuters to switch to Park & Ride.”

New Rothley care home A NEW care home in Rothley will open at the end of this year. ‘Mountview’ will be operated by Ideal Carehomes and will provide a home for 66 people. Located at 1093 Loughborough Road, the new residential and dementia care home was visited by Charnwood MP Edward Argar in August. He took part in a topping out ceremony – laying the last roof to to mark the external build as complete. The home will benefit from advanced design features and environmentally friendly and sustainable aspects such as ground source heat pumps, underfloor heating and LED lighting. There will be several communal areas within the home including a cinema, coffee shop and hair salon.

Mr Argar said: “How we prepare for old age, and as a society how we address the needs of an ageing population, are more important than ever, so it was a great pleasure to carry out the ‘topping out’ ceremony at Mountview in Rothley. Not only will this impressive new development provide accommodation and care for many older people in our community, but it also brings new jobs and represents a significant investment in Charnwood.” Before the home opens there will be a public open day where local residents will be invited to tour the building and reserve rooms.

Organised by volunteers from the Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) and now in its fourth year, the day kicked off with a traditional street parade and a fun run at noon on Sunday August 13. With the main road closed, the parade brought back memories of the old Mountsorrel gala for some. Pat Neal of the Mountsorrel Heritage Group said: “The sight of a parade coming up the village led by a band brought back memories of the 1970's/1980's. It gets better every year. Well done all of you.” Debbie MacRae, the Chair of Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT), said: “Mixing the traditional with the modern, the Parade set the atmosphere with music from the Syston Scouts and Guides Band and the excitement of the crowd, all accompanied by the bells of the Morris Dancers, the twirling of hoops and the sound old agricultural and steam driven vehicles. Bringing us up to date we had a special appearance from Pepper Pig and SpongeBob SquarePants.” The variety of stalls, activities and attractions increased for 2017, ensuring that there was something for everyone, not matter their age, interest or ability to move around. Debbie said: “Of course we included all the old favourites such as the SoapBox racing, have-a-go-archery and the street parade, but we wanted to provide much more this year. We want every Mountsorrel resident and REVIVAL visitor to feel welcome and included. “One of the new additions this year was the introduction of the TARMAC Stage situated at the old Buttermarket. Again the traditional and the modern came together to offer a full programme of music and singing. Alongside the Rothley Gospel Choir and the Mountsorrel Ukuleles, young people and members of the public took to the microphone to sing and play their favourites.” On the Memorial playing fields, Castle Park and the village Green, stalls and attractions selling quality products and food, catered for all tastes and interests. Many local businesses, including cafes, the Working Men’s Club and local shops and services, entered into the community spirit REVIVAL aims to promote. As in previous years the Soapbox Race attracted big crowds, but this year REVIVAL was celebrating something special. The MCT were proud to welcome the winners of the London 2017 Red Bull Soapbox Race. The team not only displayed the winning Soapbox, but also managed the day’s races. As the day came to a close and the contented visitors made their way home, the team of weary volunteers set about packing up and a village clean up. PoppyPlaces is a simple, inexpensive, fitting and powerful tribute to these and other heroes of the First World War. Their wartime stories are sometimes harrowing. Their memory is worthy of a poppy emblem. Primrose Hill (Charles Church) and Fieldfare (Jelson) are housing developments on the outskirts of Rothley and Mountsorrel in which road names will carry some of the names of the fallen of World War I from Mountsorrel. PoppyPlaces is a suggested addition of a poppy emblem to road nameplates (originating in New Zealand – www.poppyplaces.nz) to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. SOAPBOX RACERS from Aston Martin and the RAF were unable to defeat a team from Mountsorrel when they raced against each other at a prestigious event in London. Mountsorrel’s team Brookland Special, led by Ian Shonk, were victorious at the Redbull Soapbox race at Alexandra Palace on July 9, competing against teams from all over the country. Ian said: “Standing at the top of the hill on a giant podium with your team, lifting the trophy and hearing 2,000 people go wild is a very surreal experience!” Ian’s team consisted of driver Keith Rose, pusher Phil Densham, chief mechanic Liam Deville and Anne Gregory and they were hoping for a top 10 finish. Teams were judged for creativity, a

“We have teamed up with several other local groups to continue the celebration of Sir William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke ousting the French troops in the siege of Mountsorrel Castle in 1217 AD” said Graham Lloyd from the Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT), who is leading the organisation of the day. In April the team organised a banquet at Mountsorrel Working Men’s Club. The fun day will be held on Saturday September 16 from 10-3pm and will feature a tournament with teams of four from local groups and businesses competing against each other. In addition to the tournament, the day will also involve the Crusade medieval re-enactment society who will set up camp, hold a combat display and offer a unique insight into the life of 1217 AD. The event has been funded by a grant from the Big Lottery Celebrate Fund.

The restored railway line is the result of ten years of hard work by a total of 347 volunteers who have laid track in driving snow and dug out cuttings in blistering heat to return the track to operational status.

Poppy Appeal organiser John Doyle said: “This village has always been tremendously supportive of the work of the Legion and in last year’s Poppy Appeal together we raised over £6000 that has gone towards our continuing and ever developing welfare work. Entry to the talk is free of charge but donations to the Appeal will be appreciated and Poppies will be available as they will from locations across the village from the same day.” He added: “If you would like to help us we would welcome your support, in particular in continuing the traditional door to door street collections for which the village has a long and proud tradition. If you think you could help in this way please contact me on 0116 2375623 or email johncdoyle@talktalk.net” For details of the Remembrance Day Service and parade see the Noticeboard (page 8). In the aftermath of the First World War people wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. The poppy, the only thing which grew following the devastation on the Western Front in Flanders and Picardy, was chosen as the emblem of remembrance and to coincide with the third anniversary of the Armistice on 11 November 1921 poppies were sold to raise money for the exService community. Ninety-six years on and that tradition continues with the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been two years since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, between 2003 and 2015, we suffered 454

dead and several thousand wounded in action. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities including Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities is leading the way in delivering that support. Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £44 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: • Running our Care Homes and Break Centres • Providing a Benefits and Money Advice service which has helped over 11,000 individuals to date; • Making direct Grants totalling £24 million awarded to 42 organisations; • Making individual grants totalling £18 million to over 22,000 beneficiaries. Salsa fun & fitness “WHEN WAS the last time you had a good laugh?” asks Salsa dancer Jenny Harvey, who promises fun, laughter and exercise at her Mountsorrel salsa classes. She said: “Studies have shown dancing to be just as good at improving the heart’s health as using an exercise bike – and a lot more fun. Exercising without

realising – WOW! “Salsa dancing will exercise your body and mind and energise you without the permanent injury that is often caused by other high impact fitness regimes. If you can walk you can dance so if you want to start living life to the full, put on your dancing shoes and come and join the fun!” From September Jenny’s Espiritu Latino eight week course will start at Mountsorrel Working Men’s Club every Monday evening from 7.30-10pm, levels I, II & III www.leicest ersalsa.com
