Heritage group’s plans THE MOUNTSORREL Heritage Group’s plans for 2018 include the creation of a village museum and a book about Mountsorrel and World War I. Spokesman Pat Neal said: “The group was formed originally in 2005, to research, archive and preserve both the spoken and written history of our ancient village, together with recording, preserving and in some instances restoring the flora and fauna of the village. “From its original membership of approximately 12 people it has grown to having over 25 members which prompted a move to using the local library for its talks and meetings.” Apart from talks and meetings on local and not so local history a small Continued on back page

Continued from page 1 think it’s wonderful, we are very lucky to have a facility like this, it makes us feel proud that it’s in our village. “The people who made it happen should be pleased with themselves. We’d like to see productions by schools and theatre groups and hope that it will appeal to new groups – it has everything you need.” Teenager Chloe Shipley said: “I’d like to see a bakery in one of the units and I’d come to see movies here.” Jean Beazeley said: It’s very nice, it’s what the village needs and I just hope the people of Mountsorrel will use it.” The building is owned by the War Memorial Trust and will be leased to Mountsorrel Parish Council who will operate and manage the new centre. The chairman of Mountsorrel Parish Council Steve Haywood said: “We’ve had marvellous feedback from people who’ve looked around the centre with many saying they didn’t realise how big it is. “This project has been going on for 16 years and with the help of a lot of people, especially Will Antill, who has done a tremendous job, we can now finally start to enjoy this new building.” Cllr Heywood says that users are already booking the hall and that contact is being made with clubs, societies and arts providers to promote the venue. The parish council has employed a premises officer and two receptionists who will promote and market the centre. The centre’s website will be going live shortly and will have an online booking facility and a video walkthrough of the building’s facilities. The building will be open for business on January 2, 2018 but will be opened again on Tuesday December 12 from 5.30-9.30pm for a Christmas Food & Gift fair when visitors will be able to tour the building. • £2.7million of funding for the building came from section 106 developer

Currently the boundary splits the village in two, with the northern half in the constituency of Loughborough served by Nicky Morgan MP, and the southern section in Charnwood where the MP is Edward Argar. The Boundary Commission for England (BCE) is recommending that all of Mountsorrel be within Charnwood. Sileby and Quorn would also be moved within Charnwood. The BCE proposals are the result of a decision by Parliament to reduce the number of constituencies in the UK to 600 from 650. The plans published by the BCE are open for public comment until December 11, 2017. To view them, go to www.bce2018.org.uk

Mark Forknall from Mountsorrel Juniors FC has been nominated in the category Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity at Charnwood Borough Council’s annual sports awards. Mark said: “I have been a volunteer secretary, treasurer and coach at Mountsorrel Juniors for 10 years and have seen the club grow from 25 junior members and 3 teams to over 250 boys and girls across 22 teams. In the last two years we have seen the number of girls taking part rapidly grow and we have developed six girls only teams with over 60 girls playing football. It is great recognition to be nominated for the award but it is reflective of all the brilliant work of the many volunteers at the club who make being involved with Mountsorrel Juniors FC a fantastic experience.” Spokesman for the Charnwood Sports Awards Chris Traill said: “Charnwood has long had ties with sporting success on a local national and international

Knights gather for medieval spectacle

DEC 2017 MOUNTSORREL POST

Organised by the Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) and funded through the National Lottery ‘Celebrate’ fund, the day saw the Memorial Playing Field transform into a medieval playground of reenactment, inflatable fun, displays and free activities. On route to Lincoln in 1217, Sir William Marshal and the Earl of Chester besieged the then Mountsorrel Castle that was being held by rebel barons. At the time England was under the temporary rule of two regents, Hubert de Burgh and William the Marshal. The then King of England, Henry III, was only 9. Graham Lloyd, who organised the event with MCT, said: “The statue of Sir William Marshal in the villages Castle Park is largely overlooked, with many local people not being aware of its significance. Part of the aim of the day was to raise awareness about this part of the village’s history and to bring people together to celebrate it.” On the day the Crusade re-enactment group set up camp and demonstrated the type of hand to hand combat typical of medieval warfare. A dedication of flowers and shields made by the children of St Peters and Christ Church Primary School and Castle View Nursery was made at the statue in Castle Park and children’s work was on display at the Memorial Playing Fields. Jonathan Abbot who led the re-enactment said: “Sir William was a significant figure in medieval history and is a hero for many of us in Crusade. It was great to be in Mountsorrel celebrating his impact on local history and to see so many people have fun. Our Sir William for the day, Chris King, was honoured to take on the role.” A fun aspect of the day was the inflatable challenge, which involved a small number of teams, including one from the re-enactment group, in soft warfare on five large inflatables, supplied by Anstey Castle Hire. Each inflatable represented a medieval challenge. In the end the victors, the local Co-op Managers Team, led by Simon ‘The King’ Taylor, walked away with the trophy after some help from the crowd in beating the Crusade team at the tug of war. Graham said: “We wanted to keep this day for the village and it was great to see so many local people turning out and taking part. We have to give our thanks to the school, nursery, the Mountsorrel Heritage Group and the Sorrel Youth Café for helping to make the day such a great success.” The event was supported using a grant from the Big Lottery Celebrate Fund. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Mountsorrel Community Team and/or volunteering should contact the Team through its website: www.the-mct.co.uk 6

Children bury time capsule ARTWORK AND stories about their lives written by Mountsorrel schoolchildren have been buried in a time capsule in the grounds of a new care home.

Village chapels A RETIRED charity worker with a keen interest in local history is researching the history of chapels in Mountsorrel. While living in Bristol, John Oldham volunteered at the Kingswood Heritage Museum, learned a lot of local history and took a keen interest in bootmaker and Methodist lay preacher Daniel Flook who funded and built a number of chapels. John said: “On coming to Mountsorrel I thought I would do some local history research. Having looked at the Mountsorrel Heritage Web site I realised I could perhaps contribute to it by information on the village chapels of which there were quite a number in the past.” He added: “As a member of the Baptist Church, I began with them. There had been a few written histories which I wanted to confirm. It would seem the Baptist might be the earliest ‘chapel’ in the area going back to the 1650s perhaps even earlier. “John Wesley founded the Methodist “way” and visited here twice in the 1780s . Eventually Methodist chapels sprang up - Wesleyan, Primitive, Free these have now amalgamated into one, “The Methodist Church”.” John is now appealing to readers with photographs of Mountsorrel chapels to contact him – photographs will be copied and returned. Pupils from Christ Church & St Peter’s CE Primary School in Mountsorrel brought artefacts to the Mountview care home on Loughborough Road to place in the time capsule which will be sealed and buried in the grounds. Mountview is a brand new residential and dementia care home that opened in November. Home Manager, Sue Shaw, wanted to create the lasting legacy of a time capsule to commemorate the completion of the build. Sue said: “We are so pleased that the school were keen to be involved with the time capsule idea – it is a really exciting project and I am sure it will be a great talking point at the home for many years. I am extremely passionate about our home being a part of the local community for several reasons, but most importantly to maintain fundamental links for our future residents, and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with the school.” Two year groups from the school designed over 60 notes which are to be unearthed in 2067, when Sue is hoping that the same children might return with their own children or even grandchildren. One pupil wrote: “I really like to go to my friend’s house and I love the colours in the rainbow. I love playing on my iPad and I love playing with my brother.” Four pupils and two teachers

delivered the notes to site, before enjoying a sneak peek of the home and cupcakes in the Site Office. Fran Ward, Deputy Head at Christ Church & St Peter’s CE Primary School, said: “The time capsule idea really captured the children’s thoughts – it got us

all thinking about life today and how things might have changed in 50 years’ time. The children were also interested in what life will be like at Mountview when it opens, and we all enjoyed learning about the construction site – the cakes in the Site Office went down a treat! We can’t wait to visit again when the home is open.” Mountview will provide a home for 66 older people from the surrounding area. It has been designed and built by LNT Care Developments and will be run by Ideal Carehomes. The home hosted a public open day on Sunday November 19 when local residents viewed the many facilities and met the staff team. Mountsorrel Remembrance day THE START of Remembrance in Mountsorrel was marked this year by large poppies being displayed along Leicester Road to the Market Place.

MOUNTSORREL POST

DEC 2017

The Poppy Appeal was launched in St Peter’s Church by a well attended talk about the Battle of Mountsorrel in 1916. On Friday 10th Christ Church and St Peter’s Primary School marked Remembrance in St Peter’s with a service organised and led by Year 6 pupils. Many members of their families and the wider village community attended and all were moved both by the service and the quality of the pupils’ singing. The annual Field of Remembrance Service was held at the Peace Garden at 11am on Saturday November 11. The Standard of the Mountsorrel Branch, Royal British Legion, was paraded, a bugler played Last Post after which the laying of crosses was led by Mr Steve Haywood, Chairman of the Parish Council. The annual village Remembrance Day parade and service took place on Sunday November 12. Prior to departure a wreath was laid by Cllr Steve Haywood, Chairman of the Parish Council, at the recently installed memorial sited in the foyer of the new Memorial Centre. The Parade, led by the Leicestershire Snibston Co-op Band, marched from the Green to St Peter’s Church for the Remembrance Service which was led by Rev Colin Resch, Padre to the Mountsorrel Branch, Royal British Legion. Amongst those taking part in the Parade were, Mrs Janie Martin, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Cllr Pauline Ranson, Mayor of Charnwood escorted by her Consort and the Borough Macebearer, Col. R Martin OBE, County and Mountsorrel Branch President, Royal British Legion, Mr Steve Haywood, Chairman of Mountsorrel Parish Council, Mr Edward Argar MP, County, Borough and Parish Councillors and Members of the Royal British Legion together with representatives of many village organisations including detachments from the Army Cadet Force and Mountsorrel Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Rainbows and Boys Brigade. During the service the Roll of Honour of village casualties from both World Wars was read by members of the Army Cadet Force, Mountsorrel Scouts, Guides and Boys Brigade with wreaths being presented by members of the Mountsorrel Guides. The organ was played by Mr Richard Middlebrook of Mountsorrel. On the return to the Green the salute was jointly taken by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Charnwood. Refreshments for participants were provided in the new Memorial Centre courtesy of the Parish Council and many took the opportunity to explore the new building. The JHMT was set up was set up in memory of Rothley teenager Joe Humphries, who collapsed and tragically died from SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – in October 2012, while he was out jogging. Since that time, the charity’s dedicated fundraisers, volunteers and medical leads have worked tirelessly to increase the number of public-access defibrillators available across the city and county. They have also worked to increase awareness of sudden heart deaths and – crucially – to ensure as many people as possible are trained in CPR and how to use a defibrillator. Alan, 60, from Mountsorrel, said: “Because we do the training in groups, I can’t pinpoint exactly who the 1,000th person I trained was, but I know it will be someone from the 12/74 Scouts in Mere Road, Leicester, where I did some training recently. “I started doing the CPR training for the charity on the 3 September 2013, when I trained members of the local community in Rothley.
