Scouts have adventures
Council receives advice ADVICE RECOMMENDING that Mountsorrel Parish Council be more open and transparent, and that it produce a financial strategy, was given at a meeting attended by councillors and Mountsorrel’s MPs in July.
IT’S BEEN a busy term for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the Mountsorrel Scout Group, and next term is looking full as well with some exciting activities planned, as Scout Leader Karl Wilson explains:
The meeting was called by the Parish Council to share information, and to discuss current and future projects and the increase in the precept of 162% this year. Mountsorrel County Councillor Peter Osborne said he was there to pass on the concerns that have been made to him by the public regarding the councils finances. His advice was that as a matter of urgency, the Parish Council appointed an

Chairman of Mountsorrel Parish Council Steve Haywood said: “The Parish Council called the meeting in July to share information about a number of issues including the precept and the Memorial Centre. It was said at the meeting that the Parish Council could be more open on our website and this is something that we will be doing.” In June the council agreed to appoint a new supplier to upgrade its website and at the parish council meeting on August 21, the council agreed to appoint an advisor for a three-year strategy plan.

GP surgery expands services THE EXTENSION to the premises at the Alpine House Surgery has enabled the practice to increase the services that it provides to over 10,000 patients. A consultation with patients identified difficulty in making phone calls to arrange an appointment and difficulty in getting appointment quickly for blood tests. This has been addressed by the practice with the introduction of a ‘Walk-in Clinic’, Monday to Friday, 8.30 to 10.30am for registered patients requiring an urgent, ‘on the day’ doctor’s appointment or blood test. During particularly busy periods, patients may be asked to sit and wait but the practice says the benefits to patients are: • Patients can be seen quickly when they are experiencing a new medical problem or an acute flare of an existing condition. • It enables the practice to deal with very sick patients quickly. • It enables the practice to see more patients as some situations can be dealt

with in less than the normal 10 minute appointment slot, thus freeing up time for other patients. The first day of the blood test clinic resulted in an additional 32 patients being seen, and the walk-in clinic for new medical problems saw an additional 20 patients accessing GP services. A spokeswoman said: “Patients are recommending the use of the clinics to registered family and friends. Staff are expanding their skills to enable them to support their colleagues and offer more services to patients. Doctors at the prac-
tice are pleased with how the clinics are running and receiving positive feedback from patients. “Two other Leicester GP practices are keen to speak with Alpine House with a view to setting up similar services.”

and making guitars out of shoeboxes. They have also been on a photo treasure trail and chip shop walk. At the Beaver funday they joined other groups of Beavers from all around Charnwood on an active day of activities all about St George, and they finished their term with a party at Jump Giants. Hoping for the continued nice weather they are kicking off the new term in September with a night on the water Bell-Boating, a visit to a Hindu Temple, learning sign language and they are going out for a pizza too. “Cubs is for those aged 8 to 10 ½ years old. Passing by The Green, you may have seen them building a pioneering bridge on the Green, sliding down their waterslide or helping out on stalls at the Mountsorrel Charities Fete. They have also had a busy night learning how to light fires for cooking, but of course you need wood to light a fire, so most had their first opportunity to safely use penknives and axes to chop their own wood and make their kindling. With the fires lit, there was just enough time to cook some giant marshmallows. This term, the cubs also learnt some really useful skills as well, but shhhh… don’t tell the parents, or they might want help with the cleaning and ironing at home! Next term, the Cubs will be getting on their bikes and learning about cycle maintenance and road safety and going on a cycle ride to Abbey Park. They will also be learning to play the drums, and going on an indoor Christmas Pack Holiday in December. “The Scouts aged 10-14 years had a night of huskie racing planned, and whilst the weather was too hot to actually race the huskies, they still thoroughly enjoyed meeting the huskies and finding out all about them. They’ve visited Brocklebys and made pork pie’s, been tobogganing at Swadlicnote and spent time down a mine shaft at the Mining Museum in Wakefield. Their programme is looking full next term, including a planned winter camp.” To join the adventure, or to add your son/daughter to the waiting list, please email to info@mountsorrelscouts.org.

New company stages first play A NEW theatre company based in Mountsorrel is preparing its first production this October, staged in the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre. “Blanc Canvas Theatre” has been started by Ingrid Kleins-Daniels who for many years has been an actor and a director with “The Festival Players”. Local charity thanks trustee for long service MOUNTSORREL UNITED Charities celebrated its longest serving trustee Brian Allard’s retirement from the board on August 1, 2018. Trustees contributed to a special cake featuring a replica of the Buttermarket in Mountsorrel. Brian had chaired the board since 1989 and was a trustee before that. George Overton, Chair, said: “During the time that Brian has been with Mountsorrel United Charities, the amount we’ve given out has grown more than hundredfold to £122,000 in the last year alone. That sort of growth and development, all for the benefit of people in great need in the village is remarkable. The United Charities hasn’t even been his only local voluntary commitment – he’s done vast amounts of valuable work for the parish council, the village churches, and other local charities, at a time of great expansion and change. We all wish him a very happy retirement.” The United Charities makes grants to people in need in the village who find it difficult to pay for vital items their house-
hold needs – more information available at www.mountsorrelunite dcharities.org.uk The Mountsorrel United Charities have been caring for the people of Mountsorrel since 1874 when several smaller charities were combined by a scheme authorised by the Charity Commission.

Now in its fifth year and with dozens of attractions and events for visitors, the hours of work put in by the Mountsorrel Community Team and its many volunteers were appreciated by all who came to the event, which kicked off with a fun run and parade through the village. Ross Tomlyn, Event Organiser, said: “We are really pleased with how the event has gone. Thousands of people braved the risk of rain to come together as a community and have fun. As usual the parade and hundreds of attractions and stalls were a great success. However, this year we are particularly proud of the people who performed for us in the new arena, on the music stage and at other venues around the site. The many attractions within the new Memorial Centre also offered a new dimension.”

PUBLIC NOTICE COUNCILLOR NEIL ASHER OF MOUNTSORREL PARISH COUNCIL A panel of the Member Conduct Committee of Charnwood Borough Council recently considered a complaint that Councillor Neil Asher may have breached the Code of Conduct of Mountsorrel Parish Council regarding his use of a mobile phone during a parish council meeting and the nature of an image appearing on the device. The panel concluded that Councillor Asher's use of the device during the meeting was not in itself a breach of the Code, and that due to a lack of evidence it could not determine whether or not the image in question was appropriate. Although the panel found that Councillor Asher had not breached the Code in respect of the complaint, it considered that his conduct during the investigation process fell short of the standards expected of a parish councillor. Therefore it recommended that Mountsorrel Parish Council should write to him formally reminding him of his obligations under the Nolan principles of public life, and in particular the requirement to submit himself to the scrutiny necessary to ensure public accountability for his actions. Precept petition A GROUP of residents concerned by the 162% increase in the parish council precept this year sent a petition to Charnwood Borough Council, signed by 664 people. The Borough Council responded by saying it has no power to intervene in the budget of another local authority. Now those responsible for organising the petition have arranged a meeting with Mountsorrel’s MPs, Nicky Morgan and Edward Argar, to raise their concerns. They have also set up a facebook page called Mountsorrel Parish Council Community. A spokeswoman said: “We remain committed to working together with Mountsorrel Parish Council to ensure there will not be an excessive precept next year.”
Craft fair LOCAL HEART charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair on Sunday November 4. Now in its third year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. “The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range of beautiful gifts made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans” said Angie Humphries from the Trust. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name. “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process.” The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.

CHARNWOOD SURGERY on Linkfield Road has welcomed three new doctors. Dr Darji has left for Australia and Dr Roshan Hirani has retired after 30 years of service. Practice Manager Kerry Ryan said: “We would like to thank them both for their service to the practice and community and wish them both the best for their futures. The three new doctors are Dr Umar Abdulmajid, the new GP Senior Partner, Dr Munisa Patel, a GP partner and Dr Fieza Chaudry, a salaried GP. Each of the GPs have previously worked in the Leicestershire area and have chosen to make Charnwood surgery their new home from February 2018.

Kerry said: “Together they bring their experience and improvements as well as continuing the excellent access to GP and Nurse appointments that has always been available to patients here at Charnwood Surgery. Working alongside our Patient Participation Group [PPG] we hope that patients will continue to experience a good service from our reception/admin and clinical teams. The PPG is happy to receive new members and should contact the Surgery for further information.” In the recent National GP Patient Survey published for the months of January to March 2018, Charnwood Surgery scored much higher than the CCG aver-
age for every question, and much higher than the national average. Results show that 99% of patients found it easy to get through to the surgery by phone, 96% of patients described their experience of making an appointment as good and overall 93% of patients described their experience of Charnwood Surgery to be good. Kerry said: “We would like to thank all the patients for feedback via this survey and we acknowledge that there are still improvements to be made, but Dr Majid would like to thank all the clinicians and staff for their hard work and efficiency in providing an excellent service to the patients.”
Group appealing for volunteers THE MOUNTSORREL and Rothley Community Heritage Centre is appealing for volunteers. A spokesman said: “The centre has developed over the past 10 years thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. For our site to achieve its full potential we need more help! “Volunteering here at the Heritage Centre, as part of our fabulous team, gives you the opportunity to get involved in many of our great projects.” • The Eco Team take care of the gardening on site, and have fun planting and maintaining the nature trails. • The Restoration Team tackle our railway vehicle restoration
projects, maintain the site fences, paths and buildings, look after the Mountsorrel Railway, and the other infrastructure projects. • The Shunting Team provide public demonstrations of how trucks would have been shunted around railway yards in days gone by. • The Garden Railway is a great hit with younger visitors. Volunteers are on hand to help them enjoy driving the trains around the miniature track at weekends and school holidays. • Visitor Guides are available around the site to explain the history and ecology, and answer visitor’s questions. They also help with guided tours for groups. The spokesman said: “Regardless of how much time you can spare, whether it be frequently or just every now and again, we are always very grateful of whatever time you can give. No prior experience is necessary as training and support will be given. Physical fitness is not required for most of the things we do. Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.” If one or more of the areas above interests you, get in touch via email: volunteer@heritage-centre.co.uk

Roll of Honour restored A WOODEN Memorial inside Rothley Parish Church that lists the names of local men who served in the Great War has been restored. The Roll of Honour is dedicated to 292 men from Rothley and records the names of all of them. The 28 names of those who died are recorded in gold lettering in the centre panel and the lettering for the 264 names in the folding wings are recorded in red. The restoration of the Roll of Honour during the centenary year of the Great War was the wish of the late John Sheppard DCM, who attended the church regularly and did much voluntary work for Rothley over many decades. John consulted the Parochial Church Council (PCC) in 2014 and the PCC agreed to go ahead with the work. John died in 2015 and Frank and Marion Whitby took over the project.
Marion said: “Both the red and gold lettering were in need of alteration. The timber frames, centre panel and wings also needed repairing, cleaning and protecting.” Eight companies were approached to do the work and Belgrave Conservation from Derbyshire was chosen. Permission to carry out the restoration was obtained from the Diocese of Leicester and on July 23, Claire Ridley and Dr Campbell NormanSmith began work on the memorial, which took five days to complete. Marion said: “We are so pleased with it. It has been very sympathetically restored, cleaned and repaired.” Rothley Parish Church is open from 9am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday during the summer months if you would like to see the Roll of Honour.
Lottery money for building refused AN APPLICATION for lottery funding for a planned new building at Mountsorrel & Rothley Heritage Centre has been turned down. The Discovery Centre would have featured a heritage display space, a local history library, a study centre and would have hosted school trips at the Swithland Lane site. The estimated cost was £850,000 A centre spokesman said: “This is by no means the end of the road for the Discovery Project. As the project developed it became overwhelmingly clear

that the benefit it will bring, especially to education, is so important that the project must go ahead one way or another. “Since the project to restore the Mountsorrel Railway and create the heritage centre started 11 years ago we have had literally hundreds of setbacks
like this. We will not give up and we will continue to seek out other routes for funding.” He added: “We would like to thank Leicester, Loughborough and De Montfort Universities, local schools, companies, organisations, individuals and our volunteers who have worked with us to

Vibha Maisuria of Mountsorrel was just 36 when she was told she had secondary breast cancer and was terminally ill. Her sister, Tanuja Bennison, describes the heartbreaking moment her sister told her nothing more could be done to cure her illness. “The day Vibha told us was one I will never forget, it was July 29, 2013 about 9.30pm, my husband and I were watching TV when we heard the front door open, and thought that’s odd why is Vibha coming over now? “We knew Vibha had breast cancer but after another CT scan, she was told it was more than that. The cancer had spread into her bones, in her skull, spine, hips, everywhere, and it was terminal. “This news was so hard to accept, my sister was only 36, single and enjoying life.” “Telling my dad was the worst moment, he didn’t understand what terminal meant, he kept saying ‘she will be ok won’t she, the chemo will work won’t it?’” Despite her diagnosis, Vibha, with her effervescent personality remained positive and continued to live life. “My beautiful sister was not going to let it drag her

down, she worked for as long as she possibly could and continued to see her friends and family. “She loved crafting, shopping, lunch dates, relaxing spa days and took each day as it came.” Vibha attended the drop-in sessions at the Day Therapy unit at LOROS Hospice on alternate Tuesday’s, which her sister says made a huge difference to her life. “She loved coming to LOROS every fortnight and made lots of lovely friends there, and I know that going there made her forget her illness for a short while. “I miss her immensely and know that she managed to have her wish come

I cannot thank the staff, doctors and nursing team enough for taking care of my beautiful sister. “I have bought a Forget Me Not flower to remember my sister, she will never be forgotten.” You can support LOROS Hospice’s Forget Me Not Flower Appeal by buying your flower in memory of a loved one from loros.co.uk/forgetmenot
