Join in the big knit AGE UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling for all knitters to join in The Big Knit this year to raise much-needed funds to help keep local older people warm and healthy this coming winter. Peter Ralphs, on behalf of this well-known charity, said: “We are so grateful to those who are already clicking away, though our 2014 drive has started rather slowly. Last year we received an incredible 42,000 little hats by September. Obviously we need lots of help to match this challenging total which will assist our Winter Warmth Campaign 2014. Innocent drinks will donate 25p for each little hat which will adorn the smoothie bottles sold in Sainsbury stores in November.”
Knitters can get the simple knitting patterns online at www.ageuk.org.uk/leics or by calling the Business Development Manager on 0116 2237344. Please arrange for your knitted hats to be at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland (Ref: BDM), Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA by the end of September. Continued from page 1 Clive Wallace (40) of Woodboy Street, Belgrave, Leicester was caught after Police matched footprints found at nine scenes of crime with shoes found at his home. At Leicester Crown Court Wallace admitted to eight burglaries and one attempted burglary. He also admitted to burgling 46 other homes in the past. Items stolen included televisions, games systems, perfume, jewellery, watches and mobile phones. The court was told Wallace suffered from cocaine addiction. He was jailed for four years.

Women’s trek up Kenyan mountain CLIMBING MOUNT Snowdon in June will help prepare seven local women for a climb up Africa’s second highest mountain this August. Wendy Ferguson, Kate Hissett, Katie Woodward, Ros Taylor, Kathryn Garnett, Sarah Gladstone and Di Milner will be making the trip on behalf of Rothley Parish Church. Kate Hissett said: “The Church is linked to the charity Tearfund’s projects in an area around Mount Kenya, where assistance is given to some of the world’s poorest people. These projects are groundbreaking, as they use a grass roots approach to helping others by encouraging communities to identify their own needs and challenges and the resources they need to mobilise, in order to tackle them.” Projects developed through the programme include water access, better nutrition, increased food security, improved healthcare and education, job creation, orphan welfare and care of the environment. “The visit aims to strengthen the ties between the Church family in Rothley and Christians in Kenya and to raise awareness in Rothley of the need to support these life changing projects” added Kate. Six members of the group will trek up Mount Kenya whist the seventh will be volunteering in Mt Kenya East Hospital. They will then be visiting some of the communities in the region which are benefiting from Tearfund’s work. Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa after Kilimanjaro. At 4.985m Point Lenana is the third highest peak of Mount Kenya and the only peak accessible by trekking alone. “It’s going to be physically challenging so we have been training individually and as a group, including trekking up Snowdon in June” said Kate. Since October the women have raised

Dance yourself fitter at new class FITSTEPS IS the new dance fitness phenomenon that will see you dance like the stars of Strictly Come Dancing and get fit at the same time. Participants are able to waltz, jive, cha cha, paso doble, tango and samba and rumba without a partner or even dancing experience. The aim of the class is to create a really fun, energetic and effective way to keep fit. The fitness craze mixes Ballroom with Latin dancing and was designed by the stars of Strictly Come Dancing Natalie Lowe, Ian Waite and Britain’s most successful swimmer, Mark Foster. Great Britain swimmer Mark Foster, who was converted to dance fitness said: “You’ve got a double whammy. You’re moving around and getting fit and healthy, having fun but also you’re learning proper steps from Strictly.” Local Instructor Lisa Cluer has been professionally trained by Natalie and Ian. The stars were determined to keep the quality of FitSteps high. Strictly Come Dancing professional Ian Waite said: “We wanted to make sure that all our coaches are at a certain level, and that they deliver the steps in the correct way. For people who have watched Strictly, when they dance FitSteps there will be steps when they say to each other ‘Yes, I’ve seen that step before on the show’.” Ian added that several people have come to him saying that the class “had changed their life” and it prevented them enduring the dreariness of exercise. “This is entertaining, and you feel as though you’re having fun doing dance steps. You don’t realise that you are actually burning lots of calories. We’ve proven that you can burn about 600 calories in a 40 minute lesson” he said. Lisa’s classes are at Stonehill School, Birstall, Birstall Social Club and the Memorial Hall, Thurcaston. Contact Lisa on 07850 759170, lisa_al@talktalk.net

Donations sought for heritage centre THE CONSTRUCTION of a heritage centre, museum and tea room on Swithland Lane by the Mountsorrel Railway Project (MRP) could start this summer. The MRP have been busy fundraising – they need to raise £56,000 to release a grant of £540,000 from Lafarge Tarmac’s Landfill Communities Fund.
Project leader Steve Cramp said: “The response from the public has been tremendous. We are now within £16,000 of the target we need to get work startPics: a drawing of the planned heritage centre and below & left, visitors on the open day
ed. It is, however , vital that we achieve this sooner rather than later. The whole project, as a condition of the major grant, must be completed by July next year but we have two old granite buildings to dismantle and reconstruct stone by stone as part of the heritage centre. This will be a tough ask but is very much doable if we can start early enough. “To help raise this figure a ‘Brick Appeal’ has been launched where you can sponsor the bricks that will be used to combine, into one unified building, the different structures that form the core of the Heritage Centre. The names of sponsors will appear on a large commemorative plaque that will feature in the tearoom at the Centre. The price of sponsoring an individual brick has been set at £50. We will, of course, be grateful for donations of any size!” The latest large contributions have been £5000 from the Rothley based Harry

Caterpillars pre-school’s new owners HELEN TELFORD and Jayne Butler, proprietors of Castle View Nursery are now owners of Caterpillars Preschool Mountsorrel. Caterpillars, established at the Methodist Church Hall for 11 years, has an excellent reputation which is demonstrated by the swift take up of places every September, says Helen. She added: “Caterpillars is easily accessible and has forged strong bonds with St Peters Primary school over the years which is crucial for developing ‘school readiness’ for children attending the setting. It is a setting rich in resources run by a team of experienced and committed practitioners and is very well supported by the families who attend. Testimony to this is the sponsored swim parents recently organised to raise funds for equipment.” Jayne said: “Getting to know the children and families is our main focus. Pre schools are an integral part of village life and serve a different purpose to nurseries and childminders. It’s important that such provision continues to meet the needs of local children.”

Chancel repair liability Although an ancient law, Chancel Repair Liability still has relevance today and it has been in the media recently. CRL is the right of the church to seek money for repairs from the owners of some local properties. People frequently have to decide whether they need to insure against it when buying a new home. Therefore the PCC of Rothley Parish Church want to make public our recent research and decision to not retain this financial interest in properties in Rothley. Chancel Repair Liability dates from Rothley’s Act of Enclosure in 1782 and established a responsibility for those having received ownership of the lands known as the Great Tithe, and their successors, for the upkeep of the church chancel. Recent legislation has meant that PCCs have to identify to which properties Cancel Repair Liability applies and Advertise in

register their intention to retain Chancel Repair Liability with the Land Registry so that owners can be informed by them and it can appear on property searches. If the PCC does not register this interest then Chancel Repair Liability will cease to apply when the property next changes hands through purchase. Our church historian, Terry Sheppard has reviewed archive documents and has concluded that Chancel Repair Liability applies to the owners of the land of Southfields Farm and the Golf Club and not to other properties in Rothley. The PCC decision on 20th May 2013 was to not register such an interest in these two properties and have informed the current owners. We feel to use legal measures to compel those not necessarily members of our fellowship to maintain the fabric of the local church chancel would risk losing the goodwill and support of the local community which is essential to our work and would hinder our core mission as a church which is to share the good news of God’s love shown through Christ. Cuts We all know the cuts are coming, but in Leicestershire it would appear that the scale of the cuts are hidden in plain sight. Few people are aware about the devastation these cuts will bring to many services. These are services we currently take for granted. In your last edition I noticed you mentioned the risk to our local libraries and I am writing to raise awareness about more consultations about cuts to services which are there to protect the most vulnerable in our community. The scale of the proposed cuts is unprecedented: the budget for supporting independence for older people is set to be cut by 76% and the budget for Homelessness support is set to be cut by 78%. This reduction in preventative services will cause hardship for many in our community and will cost more in the long run as it leaves other, more expensive, services to pick up the pieces. The consultation about these cuts can be found at: http://www.leics.gov.uk/prevention_se rvice_consultation_document.pdf There are many other consultations being carried out by Leicestershire County Council, please be aware and make your voice heard. Benefits online A NEW service is urging customers to ‘save time and go online’ to manage their bills and benefits in Charnwood. Charnwood Borough Council’s new Connect service aims to make it quicker and easier for customers to find information, make council tax payments and manage their benefits. It is secure and easy to use and means customers can access information about council tax or housing benefit and get in touch with the Council 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at a time and place that suits them. Councillor Jenny Bokor, the council’s Cabinet Member for Revenues, Benefits and Customer Services, said: “It means people won’t have to queue up at the council to see someone about their benefits, benefit applications and payments will be processed quicker and customers will be able to update any changes in circumstances at the touch of a button.” Customers can already apply online for benefits and the new Connect service is part of the council’s ongoing effort to provide more services for customers online to make it quicker, easier and more convenient for people to request services, report issues and quickly find information they need. In February, the council launched its new, customer-focused website then installed high-tech self-service terminals and ‘floorwalking’ staff in its reception area to reduce customer waiting times. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk and click on ‘Manage my Council Tax bills and benefits’ to access Connect.

Sculpture marks paupers’ graves Library: your views sought
A MEMORIAL sculpture has been erected in Rothley cemetery to remember the lives of the paupers who are buried there. Rothley's Heritage Warden Marion Vincent was looking through the burial lists while researching the cemetery chapel. She said: “I was shocked to see that the first burials of the paupers was right at the bottom of the cemetery, well away from the other burials. “It really upset me that they could be considered of unfit status to be buried near to those who could pay and have their graves marked with a stone.” The burials were of paupers from the nearby Barrow-upon-Soar workhouse, built in 1840 to accommodate 300 inmates.
A GROUP of local people are looking at ways Rothley library could be run by the community.
Marion said: “I wanted to provide a memorial to those men, women and children who died in the Barrow workhouse so that their graves will be remembered into the future. The workhouse was a very real threat and as a young child I remember it being talked about. Like the two world wars, we must never forget.”

After contacting an organisation that helps commission memorials, Marion found a sculptor, Geoffrey Aldred, who agreed to produce a design. It features a workhouse couple with their child in the centre, linked by their arms keeping the family together. The finished sculpture, carved from Hopton Wood stone quarried in Derbyshire, was erected on June 4 beside the paupers’ graves. The local Harry Hames charity provided the full amount of £4000 for the project to go ahead. The library is threatened with closure after Leicestershire County Council announced cuts to the library service – it says it will continue to fund 16 of the most used libraries but that 36 face closure if community groups are not formed to run them. Rothley Parish Council has formed a working party to explore how a community library might operate if the County Council goes ahead with its plans. Parish Councillor Olwen Jones said: “Rothley Parish Council believes the village library service has a valuable role to play in the community and is pleased to support the formation of a working party to explore how it might be run by a community group in the future.” The group is gathering information from existing library users about how they use the library and a questionnaire has been placed at the Post Office, Bradley’s, the Mercury News shop and the Co-op. Views can also be sent to rothleycommunitylibrary@outlook.com or to the Parish Office, in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane. Your views are being sought on: • opening hours • facilities you now use and any new ones you would like • ages of any children in the family who use it • improvements you would suggest • ideal location eg as now, or elsewhere “We would also like to hear from anyone keen to be involved in these exploratory stages, or anyone interested in becoming a volunteer if a community library is formed eventually” said Olwen. The County Council is carrying out a public consultation on its plans and says that 2500 people have participated so far, with more than 500 people attending public meetings. The County is looking to save £800,000 a year from its current £5.6million libraries budget.

The college has begun a consultation about the possible redundancies which would see the school’s support staff cut by 55 per cent. There are currently 113 people employed as support staff – these include posts such as technicians, premises officers, cleaners, admin assistants, receptionists and catering staff. The potential job losses are due to a reduction in student numbers. In September 2013 Anstey Martin High School changed to an 11-16 school resulting in a reduction of their students coming to Longslade. The college says between September 2012 and September 2016 this will amount to a reduction of 53 per cent in student numbers overall. As funding depends on student numbers, Longslade anticipates a significant reduction in its funding of £2.36million between 2012/13 and 2016/17. Any redundancies, which if they go ahead will not happen until January, will only affect the school’s support staff. The number of teachers has been reduced by not replacing those who have left and through shorter contracts. Stonehill and Longslade are expected to merge into a single 11-18 year through school and become part of a multi-academy trust led by Beauchamp College, Oadby.
Fibre broadband extended SUPERFAST FIBRE broadband will be extended within Rothley as part of an £18.6million project to extend high speed internet access to rural Leicestershire.

Pam Posnett, the County Council cabinet member for rural broadband, said: “Extending high-speed fibre into more rural areas will enable households to better access of online movies and TV, communicate with family and friends and work more effectively from home.” Cossington and parts of Burton on the Wolds, Woodhouse, Woodhouse Eaves and Wymeswold and Church Lang ton, Foxton, Smeeton Westerby, South Kilworth and parts of Kibworth Beauchamp and Kibworth Harcourt will benefit. Monday Club’s news IN MAY members set forth from Cropston and Rothley via coach, to spend a very pleasant few hours at Carsington Water. First call was the restaurant to enjoy a restorative cup of coffee before walking round the exhibition area designed particularly for the education of children and interested adults, on the collection and purification of water for recycling for domestic use and industry. In addition was a museum outlining the history of the creation of the machines invented and produced by Richard Arkwright. It was a very happy and successful outing. At the June meeting it felt more like summer had arrived. It certainly felt that way within the membership which was buzzing with news of recently taken holidays and those to come, not to mention the eagerly awaited next month’s Strawberry Cream Tea at the “Blue Bell Inn”, in Rothley Continuing on after the club’s “Business” we experienced a very special moment – a presentation to Mrs Diana Whatton in gratitude for eleven years of faithful service running the “Bring and Buy” table and supplying for every conceivable occasion, quantities of beautifully made cakes and especially, cream meringues! I think the inserted photograph says it all, taken by fellow member Mrs. Gill Jefferson, our resident photographer. Our entertainment then followed, provided by four members of the Leicestershire Speakers club. Three ladies and one brave gentleman told a total of eight stories on which the membership had to decide whether they were “true or false”. We all had cards on which, after each story, we had to mark our conclusion, which took a great deal of concentration. The end result was given by each speaker and prizes were presented not only to the highest points, but down throughout. Very worthwhile prizes were gratefully received. After all this pleasurable hard work, the membership then tucked into a multitude of cakes to consume with refreshing cups of tea. Any enquires concerning information regarding the activities of this club, please contact me on 0116 2363467. From Ann Farndon, The Monday Club, Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston & Rothley

History society news In June the Museum’s Mel Gould gave a tour to a group of members and guests of our Society, as well as enlightening and entertaining us. A carillon was selected to be the war memorial by a controversial public ballot, which was based on the amount of money pledged rather than a simple count of the votes cast. The carillon favoured by the town traders thus prevailed over the more popular choice of a medical facility. The architect’s first design proved too expensive so the design actually built was an alternative closely modelled on a clock tower in Moulins, France. Taylor’s Bell Foundry cast all 47 bells and contributed substantially to the cost of the project. The opening ceremony took place in 1923 with music written for the occasion by Edward Elgar. Many years later, it was thought inappropriate that the war memorial building was being used by the council to store gardening machinery and a campaign began to turn it into a museum. Now three floors are packed with exhibits from both World Wars and representing all the armed services. Mel told us about a zeppelin raid on Loughborough in 1916, in which ten civilians in the Rushes area were killed. The intended target was probably Liverpool but zeppelins flew so high that navigation was difficult. The reason that

It contains memorabilia of “Songster”, which was one of the few war-horses to return after the First World War and became a kind of mascot for the regiment. The second floor

LOUGHBOROUGH’S CARILLON is not only the town’s principal landmark: it is also a war memorial and home to the War Memorial Museum.
Appeal launched for new visitor centre contains displays of armaments and a cabinet dedicated to the U.S. Airborne Division that was stationed locally during the Second World War. We saw the “clavier” keyboard from which the carillonneur plays the instrument by pressing wooden pegs with her hands and feet. Finally, more steps led us through the bell chamber and out onto the balcony, providing fine views over Loughborough and the countryside beyond. The next of our summer outings will be a guided walk around historic Whitwick on the evening of July 15. Visitors are welcome: call 236 7365 for details. SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH visited Bradgate Park in May to help launch an appeal for £150,000 to extend Bradgate Park’s visitor centre. The Rotary Cub of Leicester and the Bradgate Park Trust are leading the appeal which will see the existing visitor centre in the middle of the park extended into a deer barn. New displays will give information on the area’s geology and wildlife. The centre is expected to open in 2016, to mark the centenary of the Rotary Club of Leicester – Sir Davids father was a former president of the club. Sir David frequently visited Bradgate Park as a child. He said: “It was a vision of what the English countryside could be like which has stayed with me for ever.”
WI news AT OUR meeting held on Thursday May 8 “Resolutions” were discussed. There was only one “Resolution” to put forward for discussion, this being “Organ Donation” and the need to encourage people upon death to either donate their organs, carry a card registering their willingness to donate their organs or finally let their families know their wish. It was noted that three people die every day waiting for a transplant and 7,000 people are on lists awaiting organ transplants. The matter was discussed and the “Resolution” passed unanimously. Re the SOS Fashion Show held in April. The committee would like to thank our members for their help and support. Also, a big “Thank You” to the local community who supported this event and help make it such a success. At our meeting held on Thursday June 5 we celebrated our “Birthday Party”. As usual the members provided an excellent buffet. To round off the celebrations “Brandywine Bridge” entertained us with a medley of traditional Folk Songs. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday July 3 at the Memorial Hall, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston at 7.30pm when Ernest Miller from “The National Trust” will talk about “Stoneywell Cottage – Gimson House” From Thurcaston & Cropston WI
