Around 150 people gathered on Cross Green and the recently formed Rothley Gospel singers began the celebrations before the crowd walked along Mountsorrel Lane to the library, with many of the children dressed as their favourite book character.

Outside the library there were cake stalls, craft stalls and book stalls, hot dogs and play areas for children. The Scouts, the Parish Church, the school PTFA, the Mountsorrel Railway Project and Harrison Murray Building Society were all involved, and many local businesses and shops helped out. Anne Davies, from BBC East Midlands today, unveiled the library sign and children presented flowers to Betty Roberts, one of the library’s original volunteers when the library was housed in a classroom at Rothley school before 1986. “This is a new chapter in Rothley library's long history” said Steve Mitchell, chair of the library group. “The whole event is a reflection of local community activity, and shows the important place of the library in the village. We couldn’t let it close.” Before the opening, library volunteers spent two weeks improving the interior space. Spokeswoman Maxine Linnell said: “New LED lights brighten everything up, the counter has been moved leaving a space for events and gatherings, there is room for four new public computers,

and the toilet is now available for general use. “There were wonderful displays all over the new notice boards and a board where people could leave their comments on the changes. “It’s perfect” wrote one child. “Kate Burlinson made a library cake in the shape of a Rothley Community Library book – like the cake made by volunteers in 1997 when the library building opened. Betty cut it in style, and there were queues for a slice” added Maxine. A grant has funded £1000 worth of new books. Steve Mitchell praised the former library staff. “They’re going to be hard to follow” he said. The new group has

formed after the County Council was unable to continue to pay for staff at the library, and has been supported by the Parish Council, Voluntary Action Leicester and the library service. “The volunteers were delighted to see the library full of people looking at the books and children playing on the bright new rug. Several people said they would be using the library more now, and some tried to borrow books even before the official opening. The book stall outside raised £40 for library funds, and many new members joined up” said Continued on page 2

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Rothley Parish Council was held on September 21. PCSO Meachem reported that there had been 10 crimes in August. There had been a spate of thefts from motor vehicles most of which had been left unlocked. It was reported that the Borough Council is looking for volunteer flood wardens. The council has received a complaint from Rothley Imps Juniors FC regarding dog fouling on the Fowke Street playing field. It was agreed to request that the Borough Council Street Warden carry out checks in the area and to discuss the matter further at the next Open Spaces committee meeting The new Borough Councillor Brian Page introduced himself to the council. Issues regarding parking on Town Green Street were raised by a member of the public. It was agreed to discuss further at the next Open Spaces committee meeting. It was agreed to donate £100 for tulips for the War memorial flower beds. A full meeting of Rothley Parish Council was held on October 19. PC Leye Price reported that an increase in damage to motor vehicle offences that had occurred in September was continuing into October. It was also happening in surrounding villages, she said. She said that burglaries of outbuildings always went up at this time of year and stressed the importance of keeping these buildings secure. It was reported that the Neighbourhood Plan Group had met and consisted of six residents and two parish councillors. A proposal has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council and will need to be designated by Charnwood before work in preparing the plan can start. It was reported that a total of £46,000 of Section 106 money for Rothley was held by Charnwood Borough Council for spending in the village. £36,000 must be spent on recreational community facilities and £10,000 on youth facilities. As there are strict rules on what the money can be spent on, it was agreed to consult other parish councils for ideas. It was agreed to spend £725 on replacing a section of wooden fencing near to the library.

A FULL meeting of Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council was held on June 18. The new Borough Councillor, Leon Hadj-Nikolaou introduced himself to councillors. He is a heart surgeon at Glenfield hospital. It was agreed that the cost of proving solar powered speed indicator signs for the villages be investigated. Following a request from parishioners, the council agreed to obtain costs for providing three dog waste bins.

Westfield Lane development DEVELOPERS WHO want to build 175 new homes off Westfield Lane have submitted an amended plan. David Wilson Homes have altered their plans to address issues raised by the County Council Highways department when the original plan was submitted in 2014. The amended plans include: A full meeting of Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council was held on August 20. Clive Taylor was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the council. Cllr Brooks is the new Thurcaston co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch and needs volunteers for Mill Lane and Rectory Lane in Thurcaston. Cllr Jackson and Cllr Taylor have agreed to volunteer for certain areas in Cropston. Cllr Brooks and Cllr Charles have met with COVAL and are obtaining quotations for four solar operated road signs. Cllr Webb together with other councillors attended the Richard Hill school fete. Cllr Webb handed back the cheque for Chairman’s Allowance which he did not want to accept. Cllr Webb had met with outgoing chairman Richard Younie and advised that Cllr William Green had resigned from the Parish Council due to ill health. Members of the public reported that visibility approaching the mini-roundabout on Leicester Road/Rectory Lane was reduced by overgrown shrubs on the verge near the old Post Office. A car parked on the bend on Rectory Lane was a hazard. Signage for ‘elderly people’ need removing as the care home is no longer there and the signs are a hazard. NHW and Dog Fouling signs are faded. Vinod Mistry was appointed as the Tree Warden in Thurcaston and Rosy Carter as the Tree Warden for Cropston. Members resolved not to accept a request for a new noticeboard at the top of Leicester Road, Thurcaston. The council is looking at other ways of keeping parishioners informed on news via possible leaflet drops and articles in local magazines. It was agreed to obtain costs for two flower planters in Cropston. A full meeting of Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council was held on September 17. John Armstrong was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the council. There are now no vacancies. It was agreed that the new provider of the council website will be Squarespace. Three new dog bins will be provided at a cost of £385 including installation. The costs of emptying the bins by Charnwood Borough Council (Serco) is £767 per annum. The proposed locations are: top of Leicester Road, Thurcaston; top of Brooky Lane exiting footpath on Anstey Lane, Thurcaston; corner of Station Road and Thurcaston Lane outside Cedars Residential Home. The locations cannot be confirmed until agreed by the County Council.

Beavers from the 77th Leicester (Bradgate) Scout Group, based at Richard Hill school, visited the Soar Valley Community Food Project, which is based in Rothley Baptist Church. Beaver Scout Leader Debra Williamson said: “After reading about the Soar Valley Community Food Project in the Rothley Post, we decided that we wanted to help and learn more.” As part of their Community Impact Staged Activity Badge, and over the last few weeks, the Beavers have been collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank based at Rothley Baptist Church. Jackson, Project Co-ordinator, learning all about the need for this facility within out local community and how and why the food bank helps. “Our grateful thanks go to Tim for allowing our Colony to become involved in this small way, in the vital service that he helps to provide, and for helping them to become more caring and aware young people.” Tim Jackson said: “It was fantastic meeting all the Bradgate Beavers and receiving their generous gifts of food for the Project. They clearly enjoyed their evening and asked some really interesting and thoughtful questions. We really appreciate these and all the other gifts of food we have received at this harvest time.” The food bank has given out over 400 food parcels since it opened in September 2014. It provides food to those in need in Birstall, Rothley and other Soar villages. It also directs people to other assistance that might be available. Historic railway track re-opens A NEWLY restored section of railway line in Mountsorrel and Rothley was opened to the public for the first time in October.

Pics: Project leader Steve Cramp is interviewed for ITV news; (below) the Heritage Centre is expected to open in 2016; a train pulls in at Nunckley Hill

The latest addition to Leicestershire’s Great Central Railway, the Mountsorrel Railway once served the granite quarries of the village. Its restoration has been undertaken by volunteers from the local community and beyond. Volunteer Project Leader Steve Cramp said: “We started the project eight years ago with no funding at all and looked at how the restoration of the railway could be achieved at minimal cost; the only answer was to do all the physical work ourselves. From there we never looked back and set out using tools such as a restored 120 year old cross saw, traditional track laying tools and lots of hard graft. So many people have gotten behind the project and given their time and expertise to help; 80,000 hours of volunteer time have gone into the project to complete the restoration.” The project has been able to attract assistance from many local businesses who donated time, materials and expertise. “So many companies have helped with the areas we just couldn’t do ourselves. In particular we would like to give our

thanks to Tarmac who donated many thousands of tonnes of railway ballast and also digger time to help with track bed repairs and ballast laying” continues Steve. Not content with restoring the railway, the group then set out to create a brand new railway station at Mountsorrel. “When the Mountsorrel Railway was built originally, it was always intended that Mountsorrel would have a station but that dream was never realised. That was something that we wanted to put right so that the public could ride the railway that we had restored” says Steve. Thanks to a grant of £66,000 from Tarmac’s Landfill Community Fund and more work by the volunteers, Mountsorrel now has a railway station, on Bond Lane to serve the village. The newly restored line runs from Bond Lane to Swithland sidings.

Seat chewed I am hoping that your readers could help the Parish Council with a problem we are currently having with a child’s swing on Mountsorrel Playing Field. We have now replaced the swing seat for the third time because the seat is being chewed by a dog. This problem is one other local councils are experiencing too. The owner of a dog is either letting or encouraging their dog to gnaw at the heavy duty rubber seat and as a result causing such damage that we have to put the swing out of action for period of time as a safety measure before replacing at a cost of around £160 each time. Perhaps Rothley Post readers could assist by ringing the parish council office (0116 2374544) to report any sightings should this occur again in future. Or if the owner of such a dog is reading this letter perhaps they would stop this selfish, thoughtless and expensive act of vandalism which affects the children of the village. "Selma" is a chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. Played by Oxford-born David Oyelowu, Luther King was mesmerising, but even a trip to the White House by Luther King was unsuccessful. This film is very powerful, with terrific performances by the actors.

Garden club in bloom for annual show THURCASTON & Cropston Gardening Club held its 32nd Annual Show at the Richard Hill Primary School on September 5. It was one of those days when a cold, damp early morning makes for a very slow start and just as we’re thinking the worst, the sun comes out and everything changes. The exhibitors turned up and the Show benches gradually filled with the high standard exhibits we have come to expect. Our trophy winners were: Mr Paul Stubbs, who retained the Sedgwick Cup presented to the exhibitor gaining the highest overall points in the Show, with an outstanding display of versatility. He won classes in the Vegetable, Flower, Home Baking and the Arts & Crafts sections. His vintage clock in the latter awarded him the Orton Cup for Best Exhibit in Show. Mr Phil Dews retained the Challenge Trophy for the best points total by a Garden Club member and Mrs Marjorie

Kirk gave us another masterclass in flower arranging, retaining the Pat Jones Bowl in the Floral Art section. Other trophy winners were Mrs Alison Briggs, Mrs Joan Harrup, Mrs Janet Edwards and our new ‘Novice of the Year’ Mrs Annette Spurr (awarded to the exhibitors with the most overall points who has never won a Club trophy before). Last year’s ‘Novice Trophy’ winner, Mrs. Lesley Day continued her ‘progress’ by winning the Committee Trophy for the most points in the Home Baking section. It’s always good to see people winning trophies for the first time, and this year the Delia Brock Photographer of the Year Trophy was jointly won by Jackie Price and Hayley Donohoe. Well done ladies. Good Local plan for neighbour scheme the future ROTHLEY PARISH Council have begun the process of creating a Neighbourhood Plan for the village. Neighbourhood planning is a right for communities introduced through the Localism Act 2011. Communities can shape development in their areas through the production of Neighbourhood Development Plans. Neighbourhood Development Plans become part of the Local Plan and the policies contained within them are then used in the determination of planning applications. Neighbourhood Plans cannot block development that is already part of the Local Plan, but they can shape where that development will go and what it will look like. On 5 October 2015 Rothley Parish Council formally applied to Charnwood Borough Council for designation as a ‘neighbourhood area’. This application is subject to a six week consultation period which began on 30 October; it can be viewed and comments made at: http://localplan.charnwood.gov.uk/cont ent/index.php?id=126. After the consultation period, agreement from Charnwood will allow the Parish Council to take responsibility for producing a neighbourhood plan for Rothley parish. In anticipation of receiving designation the Parish Council has set up a group to take forward the project, which could take up to two years. Once a neighbourhood plan is agreed with the people of Rothley and with Charnwood, it will stand alongside the Borough Council’s ‘core strategy’ and must be taken into account when considering any future planning applications. The first meeting of the Rothley Neighbourhood Planning Group took place on Tuesday October 27, 2015. The group agreed that its first task would be to consider how to engage with and seek the views of the Rothley residents.

A SCHEME that provides support to vulnerable people in Thurcaston and Cropston should be up and running in the new year, say the organisers.

The Good Neighbours Scheme aims to provide help for anyone in the community who needs assistance such as the elderly, disabled, single parents or those temporarily in need through illness, injury or bereavement. The types of support offered depend on local need but can include: • help with transport such as lifts to shops or medical appointments • befriending • support with computers, televisions etc • everyday tasks such as caring for pets, collecting shopping, putting bins out, gardening, minor household jobs • help writing letters or filling in forms • reading to the blind or partially sighted The scheme is run entirely by local volunteers. Spokesman for the Thurcaston & Cropston Good Neighbour Scheme Keith Pyne said: “After all the checks we are required to follow and carry out we should be up and running early in the new year.” The project is being led by the Rural Community Council (Leicestershire & Rutland), a small Leicester-based charity with support from Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council, after a Parish wide survey and an open meeting showed strong need and support. The scheme will join nine others which are working within Leicestershire all aided by the RCC and operated by volunteers. History society news Monday 2015 MARKS the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo which took place on June 18, 1815. At our October meeting we heard the fascinating story of the previously unrecorded and unknown men of Earl Shilton who served at Waterloo with the British and allied forces, led by the 1st Duke of Wellington and, together with the Prussian forces, led by General Blucher, the resounding defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army was achieved. Our speaker was Paul Seaton whose dedicated research, together with his daughter, Sarah, had traced three of his own ancestors who were at Waterloo as members of the Royal Horse Artillery, G Troup. As well as his own ancestors, Paul also learnt about the three other Earl Shilton men who had served at Waterloo. The whole project to trace these six men was begun in 2011, following the death of Paul’s mother, Eva Beryl Seaton, nee Almey, who inspired her son to set out to uncover some family history. Such was the recognition and acclaim for the men who had served at Waterloo that, for the first time, all ranks received a commemorative medal and extra pay, plus their army records would forever show that each and every one of them would always be known as “Waterloo men”. In tribute to all the brave British and allied men and boys who fought in that horrendous conflict, a long overdue memorial has been erected at the key strategic point of Hougoumont Farm, near the battlefield site in Belgium and, in Earl Shilton, a superb memorial stone has been erected on Hall Field, between the parish church and Almeys Lane, commemorating the six Waterloo men of the village. Following on from all the research, a book has been produced entitled “From Earl Shilton to Waterloo” and Paul concluded his talk with one of the Duke of Wellington’s famous quotes regarding Waterloo: “I have never fought such a battle, and

I trust I never shall fight such another”. Our final meeting for 2015 will be on Tuesday November 17 when there will be a short A.G.M. followed by a talk from Margaret Greiff, entitled “The World Traveller”. Time: 7.30pm Venue: Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church. All welcome. Visitors: £3. From Jennifer Kennington, Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society

Club news ON A somewhat disappointingly cold and wet afternoon, on Monday September 14, a sizeable number of members and visitors came into the warm with their goodies for sale for our Harvest Bring and Buy tables. There were some mouth-watering pastry offerings, together with jams and cakes and, fresh from the garden, appeared a variety of fruit and vegetables enticingly displayed in various baskets etc. However, before we set about selling the produce we decided to relax and enjoy our speaker Mr Andrew Parsons, telling us about “Farming with Wildlife” He informed us that “Acorn Farm” in Sutton on Trent had belonged to his family since his grandfather had come as a child in the 1880s and who was brought up by an aunt and uncle who lived in the village. He then married a local girl in 1912 and was tenant of “Woodbine Farm” containing 30 acres. The farm grew in size, as well as the family consisting of seven children. By the mid-1950s Andrew’s father and his uncle went into partnership, but unfortunately this broke down and the farm was split up. However, in due time the size of the farm increased back to its original size and flourished with acres of ground supporting both considerable herds of cattle and flocks of sheep. Further acreage lent itself to arable farming and in this state care and attention was given to the access and support of various wild birds, animals and insects by careful planning of the working of the fields and hedgerows. Andrew is the third generation and now works part-time managing Acorn Farm visits, as well as running a successful photographic business. During his talk we were delighted to see lots of his photographic work displaying well known birds and animals together with quite a few lesser known; all in perfectly natural settings. There was a very appreciative response from his audience with oohs and aarhs and laughter. A truly delightful talk. In keeping with the happy atmosphere, we then listened to a delightful poem “written and spoken with a Yorkshire accent!” by our resident Poet, Mrs Margaret Hooper. Finally we achieved a very successful selling of the produce and this was followed by tea and cakes. The yummy cakes were supplied this month by Mrs Heather Tighe and Mrs Maja Tompkins all of which disappeared without difficulty and brought about the end of a very lovely afternoon! In October the members once again welcomed our old friend Mr Derek Holloway, for the fifth time. On this occasion he spoke about “Introducing Charles Darwin”. He was thanked for his very informative and quite light hearted presentation and invited to return in the future with another subject. To conclude the afternoon, the membership enjoyed a treat of ice creams and cakes in celebration of Ann Farndon’s Birthday and forthcoming 40th wedding anniversary. Our next meeting will be on Monday November 9 when our speaker will be Mr Roy Wood telling us “The Secrets of the Rich” For further information please ring 0116 2363467 From Ann Farndon, the Monday Club, Cropston, Thurcaston, Anstey & Rothley

Fastest lap time EX-KART CHAMPION George Line from Thurcaston raced through the field from 23rd on the grid to finish seventh at a Mazda Super Cup race in Wiltshire.

Driving his Mazda MX5, George had qualified on pole position but was demoted to 23rd due to a racing misdemeanour. During the race George set a new lap record by 2.7 seconds. George is supported by CMS Sepcor of Coalville and run by step-dad Robin Langford who competed in motorsport in the 1960s and 70s with Langrop of Anstey. Despite the setback of this race he holds fourth place in the championship, only six points behind the leader.

WI news AT OUR September meeting we enjoyed a talk and demonstration called “Defence Dogs”. Our speaker was Adam Kempsey. He was accompanied by his colleague Ciaron and a lovely Springer Spaniel called Quinn, an arms and explosives search dog. All are from the “Defence Animal Centre” at the R.A.V.C Melton. Adam told us of how the centre operates and the work it does. He then answered a multitude of questions from members. Quinn is nine years old and has completed four tours of duty in Afghanistan. He is now part of the dog training team, but will be retiring soon. Ciaron then put him through his paces. This was a highly enjoyable and informative talk, and rest assured, Quinn certainly had many admirers! At our October meeting Ian Rogerson gave a talk and demonstration entitled: “Talking Turkey”. Ian who is now retired, was a butcher for 60 years. He told us the bird has been in this country since the thirteenth century, but was very different to the one we know nowadays. A different shape and tasting like a game bird, it was eaten only by the very wealthy. Since the 1980’s the turkey has been bred to become more versatile. It now has a wider back and a larger breast which provides the more popular white meat. These days turkey crowns, legs and mince are very popular, but even into the 1950’s, turkey was still considered a luxury item, and was only eaten at Christmas. After the talk Ian answered members’ questions and then we all tucked into a turkey cob. A very enjoyable evening. Our next meeting is the A.G.M. which will be held on Thursday November 5. Golf day for Rothley charity A ROTHLEY charity has benefited from a fundraising golf match. Newman Gauge Design, specialists in commercial interior design for the hospitality, leisure and retail sectors joined forces with The Little Britain Pub Company to raise £3000 and counting for Alex’s Wish. Celebrating twenty years in business and the completion of two pub refurbishments for The Little Britain Pub Company in Rothley and more recently The Crown in Dalby, Newman Gauge wanted to collaborate with the independent pub operators to give something back to the local community and called upon their contacts in the pub and leisure sector to raise money for Alex’s Wish. “The idea to raise money for Alex’s Wish, like all great ideas came up in the pub over a pint with Mike and Ben at The Blue Bell Inn” explains Brian Gauge, Director, Newman Gauge. “We were discussing Newman Gauge’s twenty year anniversary and the fourth project completion for Little Britain Pub Co, which is when we decided to host a joint celebratory event and raise money for a local charity.” Alex’s Wish is a charity set-up in Rothley by Emma and Andy Hallam in 2012 after finding out their son Alex was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, with the sole aim to fund world-class science and clinical trials to bring about a cure or new treatments to help delay symptoms of this fatal genetic disorder.

“Having worked together on two projects, we wanted to celebrate our achievements and put our efforts to a good cause and as we were in Rothley at the time, it made sense to stick to the good old rule of charity starts at home, which is how we chose Alex’s Wish” said Ben Moore, Director, Little Britain Pub Company. The charity golf day held at Longcliffe Golf Club, Loughborough on Thursday September 10, followed by dinner and cheque presentation evening at The Blue Bell raised in excess of £3000 for the Rothley Charity. Alex’s Wish has raised over £300,000 since the charity began and their aim to bring about new effective treatment to help delay the onset of symptoms in boys with Duchenne is gathering pace with almost £300,000 already invested in research into promising new treatments for the disease. Emma Hallam, Mum and Director Alex’s Wish said: “We are incredibly grateful to Newman Gauge and The Little Britain Pub Company and all their guests today who have raised an incredible amount for our charity. Without fundraising events and thoughtful companies like these we would never have been able to donate such large sums of money into new research and I hope that more events like the Golf Day will help us succeed in reaching our £1 million fundraising target to fund even more research.”

Salty’s in Syston SALTY’S IN Syston is a vintage style retail shop, a café and tea room and on Saturday nights becomes a bistro entertaining diners with music performed by TV talent show winners Nick and Tina Salt, who own the business. Nick said: “It is a very unique and different venue and we are getting busier every day.” Nick and Tina have been professional entertainers for 35 years, winning Des O’Connor’s ITV talent show ‘Pot of Gold’ in the mid nineties. They have lived in Mallorca for seven years performing in hotels before moving to America where they entertained on American cruise ships, returning to England two years ago. Nick said: “Our passion outside of entertaining is me cooking and my wife’s fantastic ability for upcycling furniture, so we decided to open Salty’s”. Salty’s is at 1245 Melton Road, Syston, near to Wilkos
