INTRODUCTION Buddhist Institute Sunday Dhamma School (BISDS) was established in 1929 under Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society (SAWS) with an enrolment of 12 Sinhala children who studied Dhamma under the tutelage of Ven M Dhammadassi Thera, the then incumbent Bhikku of the vihara. Classes were held under the Bodhi Tree. The late Ven. Dr K Sri Dhammananda Thero’s arrival in 1953 marked the rapid expansion of the BISDS. Many prominent Sangha members were appointed as school principals. Training programmes and activities for staff members, parents and students were organised with the help of staff volunteers.
