The Death of Rev. Ike, Father of the Prosperity Gospel The branches of Modern theology is defined by those emerging theological disciplines that have become active and popular since the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. Those disciplines include “Lutheran Theology”, “Reform Theology”, Liberal Theology”, “Neo-Orthodox Theology” and Contemporary Theology” One of the twigs on that branch of Modern Theology is “Contemporary Theology” is what has become known as the “Prosperity Gospel”. Last week, the Rev. Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter, known to the church community as “Rev. Ike” passed ending a thirty plus year career on the radio and television. What is probably less known however is that Rev. Ike was considered by many to be the father of the prosperity gospel message. According to Daniel Dale, a staff reporter for thestar.com online newspaper, Reverend Ike, was one of the earliest prominent proponents of the "prosperity gospel," which claims material wealth is the i d e a l s o u rc e o f h a p p i n e s s. A s a n ostentatiously attired fixture on U.S.

television and radio between the 1970s and 1990s, he exhorted hundreds of thousands of believers, mostly African-Americans, to do such things as close their eyes and "see green" – "money up to your armpits, a roomful of money, and there you are, just tossing around in it like a swimming pool." reports Dale. Born in 1935, Rev. Ike was called to his home Pentecostal Church as a teenager but was removed from the pulpit by church officials for “several heresies” including referring to “Lord Buddha” in his college thesis. After a brief period in Boston, he moved to New York City in the 1960’s and established a congregation in a renovated theatre in upper Manhattan. At one time his church owned 16 Rolls Royces and other luxury items. Rev. Ike died last Tuesday in Los Angeles, CA at age 74 following a stroke of two years ago.

Reverend Ike, was one of the earliest prominent proponents of the "prosperity gospel," which claims material wealth is the ideal source of happiness.
