President Obama tells gays..

“I’m Here with You...”

gosp e l today | O c t 1 1 , 2 0 0 9

"I'm here with a simple message: I'm here with you in that fight," President Obama told roughly 3,000 attendees of a gayrights $250-a-seat black-tie fundraising dinner this past Saturday at the Washington Convention Center. "For even as we face extraordinary challenges as a nation, we cannot and we will not put aside issues of basic equality."

The President said, "nobody in America should be fired because they're gay, despite doing a great job and meeting their responsibilities. It's not fair, it's not right. We're going to put a stop to it. And it's for this reason if any of my nominees are attacked not for what they believe but for who they are, I will not waver in my support because I will not waver in my commitment to ending discrimination in all its forms. "Do not doubt [thats] the direction we are headed and the destination we will reach," President Obama said. "We have made progress, and we will make more."

Although the comments were positive and favorable, many in the crowd criticized the President saying that theyd hoped that he would follow through on his promise to end the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. Some admitted that they were frustrated that Obama hadn't done more for them already, especially on the "don't ask, don't tell" ban. Ending the ban was one of his campaign promises last year. "I have hopes Obama will do it, for the people who want to serve," said Nell Barnes, one of hundreds of same-sex marriage advocates who marched across the Golden Gate Bridge Sunday morning. Like others, she showed some impatience that Obama hadn't acted already. "It's interesting to me that a man who comes from an oppressed race doesn't just do it, with a swipe of a pen," said Barnes, 43, of Fresno. What’s your opinion of this issue?
