LISTENING TO MUSIC READING A BOOK PLAYING SPORTS WATCHING TV
AFFECTS THE
BRAIN
The brain instruments all the activities that everyone participates in every day. From listening to music to simply breathing, the brain is responsible for every daily function. The following is a diagram that displays a few everyday activities that trigger parts of the brain. While only one section is highlighted for each activity, all of them trigger many parts of the brain in one way or another.
frontal lobe:
READING A BOOK
The frontal lobe is responsible for cognition and memory, reasoning, motor skills, personality traits and behavior. When reading a book, this part of the brain helps retain memory, flip the pages, make predictions, and dictates reactions. The frontal lobe is just one part of the brain that is stimulated when reading a book.
parietal lobe:
PLAYING SPORTS
The parietal lobe is in charge of the sensations such as pressure, touch and pain that people feel from everyday activities. Playing sports activates a lot of these sensations, whether it be from swimming or running to playing football or lacrosse. These actions stimulate the parietal lobe along with many other parts of the brain required to perform these physical functions.
temporal lobe: LISTENING TO MUSIC
The temporal lobe monitors sound and the auditory functions. Listening to music stimulates this temporal lobe because it processes the lyrics and rhythm people hear when listening to a song. Many studies that have been done on the brain have discovered that listening to music is healthy because it boosts memory, decreases stress, focuses the brain, and improves cognition skills. information courtesy of
https://qbi.uq.edu.au/brain/brain-anatomy/lobes-brain https://www.thebestbrainpossible.com/how-listening-to-music-benefits-your-brain/ Additional information from social studies teacher Mrs. Renae Stoudt
occipital lobe:
WATCHING TV
The occipital lobe deals with visual processing and sight. When watching TV, this part of the brain is in charge of processing what people see. While this activity also stimulates more than just the occipital lobe, this part of the brain plays a crucial part in handling what is known as the visual cortex. design by B. deCastro | 5

Thailand’s new year celebration is a 5-day national holiday rich with symbolic traditions. Visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks is commonly practiced. As a festival of unity, people who have moved away usually return home to their loved ones and elders. The holiday is known for its water festival.

The theatre room on the first floor is named in honor of former director Mr. Kyle Guyton who passed away in 2016. The theatre is just one way of remembering the legacy he left at BCHS.
The improv comedy team here at BCHS is in the middle of another hilarious season. Make sure to stop by the Kyle Guyton Theatre and watch a match! The BCHS fight song is sung after every athletic celebration. Whether it is a touchdown at a football game or a basketball game win, students, fans and athletes alike join in. Every student at BCHS has their own personal iPad to do school work on and submit assignments on. In 2012, iPads were introduced to every grade level.
Ask any BCHS student and they will say their favorite part of Monday is coming in at 8:55 instead of the usual 7:50. This late start is included in the schedule to balance out BCHS’ block schedule.

The Bach family is one that completely embodies what a BCHS family is. Mrs. Jackie Bach, English teacher, and Mr. Jeff Bach, science teacher, teach here at BCHS together. Their two children, JT and Joey, attend Trojan Tots. The family atmosphere is one that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
Upperclassmen have the opportunity to go on an immersion trip to El Salvador during Thanksgiving break or spring break. They spend a week with the Tamarindo people learning more about not only their culture, but themselves as well.
Principal Joe Hansen is famous for his Twitter updates. Whether he is at a sporting event or reminding the school of valuable information, everyone can count on Mr. Hansen to keep BCHS informed.

weekly mass
BCHS is one of the only Catholic high schools in the state that still has weekly Mass. The administration at BCHS believes that by living out the Catholic mission, weekly Mass is a must.
With more licensed sophomores in the spring, the back gravel lot is getting even more full. There are plans in the works to expand the gravel lot for more parking, especially for home football games.

The feeling of unity is one that is instantly felt the moment anyone begins attending BCHS. We are excited to welcome the Class of 2023 next year.
Theology and Latin teacher Mr. Matt Hilton, has been teaching at BCHS for 10 years. Junior Erik Bowes said, “I like ‘H-Dawg’ because he is very easy and fun to talk to and treats every student with the same amount of respect.”

With 13 state football championships and more in other sports, it is no secret the Trojans are victorious in athletics. This year alone, the football team made it to semi-state, and beat rival school Cathedral after a six year drought.

“Hit it Mrs. Gaffney…” can be heard daily from the announcements as principal Mr. Joe Hansen announces the Senior of the Day. Not only is this senior featured on Mr. Hansen’s Twitter page, but they also receive a pin and a cookie at lunch.
The Class of 2019 is graduating this May and their absence will be felt by everyone as they continue on with their lives and leave their time at BCHS behind. Thank you to all seniors for the mark you have made on the students and teachers here.

The music program has grown due to the new leadership of Mr. Mark Duray. With the new inclusion of the band at mass, the student body has definitely taken a notice. Junior Mary Horlander said, “The music is a lot more lovely and praising God instead of such a somber event.” Every year on the day of Walk-a-Thon, all girls at BCHS have the opportunity to participate in the flag football game. The game is officiated by licensed referees and coached by current BCHS football players and teachers.
