WELCOME TO BISHOP’S STORTFORD COLLEGE Senior School
monitor your child’s well-being and personal development just as much as their academic progress; the two are inextricably linked. We also encourage your child to take part in a wide array of activities beyond the classroom: the confidence that comes from discovering and developing new talents and interests is an essential ingredient for success and, importantly, a key factor in a pupil’s ability to make rewarding choices about their future. We hope you will come and visit us, ask any questions you may have, and experience all our Senior School has to offer.
“The main reason I chose to travel from Enfield every day was because it’s so welcoming and I felt it would be easy to settle and define myself. I was also looking for good Art and Drama which the College has. The exam results are good and the campus is beautiful. The relationship with teachers is more personal here. They try to understand you and to develop on that. There is so much to do. The sense of belonging is special as well. Being part of a House was a new experience for me. It means there is always somewhere to chill…and your Housemistress looks after you as well as your tutor. The competitiveness between the Houses is great. We all love each other though!”

“I’m impressed that the staff are so caring and encouraging”
“Our daughter has actually commented on how good her teachers are, and she really likes the small classes. She says the teachers really want the best for you and are not hung up on League Tables. The emphasis is in doing the best for yourself”

THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
When your child joins the Senior School they will be allocated to one of ten single-sex Houses. College Houses are the beating heart of the community and will be a central part of your child’s life, offering a base and, in the case of boarders, a home. Your child’s House is the College equivalent of their family. Here your child will find an immense and valuable support network comprising other pupils and staff. It is in their House that your child will often be best known, forming lifelong friendships and receiving unstinting support. In addition to a Housemaster/ mistress (day houses) or Houseparents (boarding houses) responsible for general welfare, your child will have a House-based Academic Tutor who monitors Eachprogress.House has its own personality, identity and facilities. You only have to witness the impassioned cheering at House Music and other inter-house competitions to sense the strong bonds that are formed. It is no surprise that the Houses are consistently cited by departing Sixth Formers as what they will miss most. The instant sense of belonging your child’s House provides is a considerable part of what makes the College community so special. As a boarder your child’s House will take on even greater significance. Ensuring each boarder is able to settle quickly and feel cared for is one of our boarding house staff’s first priorities. Our boarders have the support of House staff, Tutors, Monitors and Year Representatives all within their House.

The other girls in the hockey team have taken her under their wings, so she has lots of friends there.” Parent of weekly boarder, Lower Fifth (Year 10)
“Our daughter has settled in really well, which is mainly down to the Housemistress who really made her focus and realise what she needed to do.”
“In your first year in the Senior School, you don’t understand why everyone else is getting so excited about the House Music Competition and rehearsing really hard for it. Then on the day the atmosphere is electric and suddenly you get it. It’s fantastic!”

In addition to opportunities for sport, music, visual art and drama, your child will be able to choose from many options in our highly regarded Personal Development Programme. We want your child to be able to pursue as many passions as possible and to leave with self-belief and a greatly expanded horizon. Will it be textiles, Greek club or astronomy that most appeals? Will your child opt for scuba diving, beekeeping, or water polo? Perhaps bridge or badminton will be the activity that ignites a spark. Maybe one of the clubs and societies or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme will be your child’s place to shine.
SMOOTH TRANSITIONS
One of the many advantages of being a through-school is the continuity between the different sections of the College. During the Fourth and Fifth Form years your child will have the opportunity to sample widely from the curriculum in its broadest sense. As your child approaches Sixth Form, we give them considerable help in defining a more specialist direction for that crucial next stage. We strive for a balance between continuity and familiarity whilst introducing exciting new features.
Confidence is an essential ingredient for success, both at school and for later life. That’s why we don’t rest until we have helped your child discover what they are good at, and enabled them to develop those talents.
“In such a short time she has changed as an individual, academically, and also with her sports. She seems to have upped her game and engaged more” Parent of day pupil, Fourth Form (Year 9)
