Dad On Parade

Page 1

Dad on Parade As hard as I looked I could not see you there today. And I looked hard even though I knew you would not be there. I looked at the badges that caught the light upon slanted caps. I looked among the ranks and files and flags for a glimpse of you. As they marched with an aged roll I looked for you. And I knew you could never be there. I looked for that rolling gate that gap in that smile. Those thick rimmed glasses that you wore in later life. That special threaded antelope that emblazoned your jacket. You were not there. I looked as they saluted the queen. I looked as they sang songs holding hands in small circles. I looked as the crowd gathered and the band played. I would have been there with you today. But would you have been with me? I have remembered what you told me and I pass it on as best I can. I thank you as the world thanked them today and I remember. Your longest day Your victory Although I have put away the sword I have never forgotten and will never forget. 6th June 2004
