RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | CREATIVE TOUCH HOMES

Jeremy Kukowski comes from a long line of family members that have made their living in the home building industry. He has uncles that are builders, his father was a builder, and his grandfather was a developer. With family experience like that it would seemingly be a no brainer that Jeremy would want to work in the industry as well. That wasn’t the case right away.

“I got out of the building business for about ten years because I honestly didn’t really like it when I was younger.” Instead, Jeremy and his wife Jennifer moved to Alaska where Jeremy worked in surveying on large scale oil fields in Prudhoe Bay. Jennifer went to school for dental hygiene and worked full time. Wanting to be closer to family, the Kukowski’s moved back to North Dakota in 2007, two months after the birth of their first and in 2010 Jeremy started Creative

LIVABLE LUXURY When designing homes Jeremy and Jennifer want their clients to consider how they live in their home every day. “We try to get a handle on what their everyday life looks like. We try to get a feel for their everyday activities and design a house around that,” Jeremy explains. For their own home, the Kukowski’s took the same approach and built a warm, welcoming home with modern amenities.

When designing the kitchen everything was planned for before the cabinets were built. “When you’re in front of the stove everything is right there. There’s no kitchen dance looking for everything you need while you’re cooking,” explains Jennifer. A central vacuum sucks up toast crumbs, a ladder closet hides the 5’1” Jennifer’s step ladder, and roll out shelving provides convenient access to small appliances. A charging station in the mudroom provides a home for devices and a bathroom in the garage has become a feature in every house the Kukowski’s build on the water. “It just makes sense,” explains Jason.

The Kukowski’s entire home reflects the organization and livable luxury that Creative Touch Homes provides its clients.

JOE VETTER CONSTRUCTION | RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE

Joe Vetter, Sr has been in the construction industry for 34 years. He started as a subcontractor doing trim out work and progressed to going into business for himself. It hasn’t just been Joe building and contracting all these years, though. For Joe Vetter Construction it’s a family affair. In the beginning, Joe, Sr’s wife Berna worked full time and then did the books and contracts for Joe at night. Their five kids helped by cleaning the homes Joe built. “They always wanted to know how many bathrooms were in the homes,” Berna laughs. She adds, “We were always thankful the kids were willing to help out, we’d always have pizza for them.”

One of those kids, Joe, Jr, is now all grown up and has been transitioning into taking over Joe Vetter Construction from Joe, Sr. “I didn’t want it to die out. We have a prospering business and we’re well known in Bismarck. I wanted to pass it on to one of the kids and Joe has a lot of experience,” explains Joe, Sr. Joe, Jr has worked for Joe Vetter Construction for five years and has been focused on learning all aspects of the business. He has studied and learned to draw floor plans, how to work with sub-contractors,

were added with customers in mind both Joe, Sr and Berna got what they want. “I got my garage and she got all the nice bling,” Joe, Sr explains. “I didn’t realize until I started buying for this house that I was so blingy,” Berna smiles. Her propensity for bling has earned her the nickname ‘Glamma’ from one granddaughter.

High, coffered ceilings with 10-foot main walls allow for large windows that flood the home with natural light. A sunroom meant to fulfill a dream of Berna’s has ended up being one of Joe, Sr’s favorite rooms in the house. A bar, sit up counter, and outdoor kitchen complete the perfect lower-level entertainment area.

The transition from Joe, Sr to Joe, Jr will fully take place in the next couple of years and the quality and organization that have helped Joe Vetter Construction be successful will continue. Joe, Sr explains, “Our goal is a seamless transition so you would never know it was handed down completely.”

K NUT SON HOME S BUILDING FAMILY TRADITIONS STORY BY Jennifer Kranz | PHOTOS BY GLASSER IMAGES

35

KNUTSON HOMES | RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE

A FAMILY TRADITION Home building is in Cory and Drew Knutson’s blood. Their dad, Jack Knutson, built the first house for Knutson Homes in 1980 and the boys grew up around construction sites. “He’d give us a bucket of screws or a broom, so we’ve been around construction our whole lives,” explains Drew. Both Cory and Drew left Bismarck for college in Arizona and explored career options other than home building. “I went down to college for nursing and was either going to be a nurse anesthetist or come back and build homes,” explains Cory It was on a trip back to Bismarck in 2008 to work a summer job that Cory was convinced to stay and go into construction. “Dad gave me a sweet sales pitch and sold me on building houses,” Cory says. Drew, a year younger than Cory, had followed him to Arizona after a year in Grand Forks. Drew majored in business management and after graduation joined his brother with Knutson Homes.

When asked what it’s like working together as brothers both Cory and Drew admit it can have its challenges but ultimately, it’s been a great experience. Cory explains, “There’s good

want to make sure you have a good relationship and you need to leave things at the office sometimes.” Drew adds, “We don’t always agree on things and we’re brutally honest with each other. We have always been close, though.”

Jack recognized the importance of having Cory and Drew understand all aspects of the business so when both sons started, they did everything receiving a well-rounded, real life education. “We worked with dad for seven or eight years and it was a

chance to learn all different parts of the building business,” explains Drew. When Jack phased out the Knutson boys weren’t left completely on their own. Bonnie, the long time Knutson Homes office manager, stuck around. “Bonnie is the best administrative assistant in the business. She knows who to call and how to get things

TASTES AND STYLES Drew and Cory have their own individual styles and tastes when it comes to their personal homes. “One of the coolest things about building is that you get to work on all kinds of styles. We visit a lot of homes and research a lot of different styles,” says Drew. His current home is more modern, but his next home won’t be the same. Cory’s current home is modern and clean, but he is in the process of building a beachy, edgy, eclectic home ().

When it comes to the homes they build, Cory says, “We pride ourselves on doing a lot of different styles. We build for every age group and every style. As a builder you want to be in the trends but not too into them. You want to be timeless, too.” Cory, Drew, and Nate love seeing their jobs come together. “Take pride in what you do. If you do that it will usually come out great,” Cory smiles.

REDFORD SIGNATURE HOMES | RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE

Debbie Luptak made the leap from teaching to building homes in 2006. “We had dabbled in and put a couple houses up in the summer for people and I thought we could do that all year. I loved my job, I loved teaching, but it was just time for me to go,” Debbie explains, and she couldn’t be happier with her decision. As one of only a few female builders in the area Debbie’s business is 100% hers and her focus is on her clients, “That’s the cream of the crop. Visiting with clients and making sure things are going right and they have the right product are big important pieces,” Debbie says.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Debbie and her husband Greg Luptak, owner of Gregory Builders, were set up on a blind date by mutual friends when they were freshman in high school. “We went to a movie. It was Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford,” explains Debbie. They have been together ever since and the pair have built a life as strong as the homes Debbie builds. As she was considering names for her business Debbie landed on Redford after the actor in the movie that first brought her and Greg together and so

Cottonwood Parkview Addition is a new, mixed-use development planned for South Bismarck, located near the corner of Washington Street and Santa Fe Avenue. “Due to its location and dedication to quality and design, the homes in Cottonwood Parkview Addition will surely maintain their property values for years to come,” says Jordan Anderson, owner of Big River Builders. “We foresee it as feeling like its own community. The local parks, walking trail systems, numerous sports complexes all add value, and the single-family lots will back up to green space, with no immediate backyard neighbors, making these lots very unique and private,” explains Greg Meidinger, owner of Aspire Homes.

Did You Know: South Washington Street will eventually be improved and widened f rom the South Bismarck drainage channel south to Burleigh Avenue. “On November 6, 2018, the City of Bismarck approved a

new ½ cent sales tax that will help to fund the Washington Street improvements,” stated Michael Gunsch, Senior Project Manager of Houston Engineering. The new subdivision will offer: • a well-balanced mix of residential and commercial uses • 4-acre neighborhood park • 13-acres of open space • 90 luxury twin-homes • 27 single-family homes • condominium homes • neighborhood full-service convenience store Phase I lots available Summer 2019: • 9 single-family lots fronting Peach Tree Drive, average lot size 14,077 square feet. • 12 twin-home lots fronting Peach Tree Drive, average lot size 10,333 square feet.

THEIR HOME Greg and Debbie built their home 13 years ago as a model home. Features like coffered and trayed ceilings, wenge wood detailing, and an incredible mother-in-law suite in the lower level of the home showcase Debbie’s ability and

attention to detail. Greg’s favorite part of their home is the kitchen and Debbie would agree. “We have a dining room, but we find it fun to sit in here and have dinner parties,” Debbie explains. The granite island features a drop-down table giving it an eat in kitchen vibe. The

family room off the kitchen showcases large windows. “This is our go-to area, it’s wonderful for entertaining,” says Deb. The Luptak’s home stays true to the craftsman style with warm wood millwork around the doors and fireplace as well as high ceilings. Given the elevation of the lot the home is built on the lower level ceilings are 10 feet high. The spacious mother-in-law suite feels like its own separate home rather than a basement space.

LOG HOMES Debbie’s versatility in the building industry includes a long list of log and timber frame homes built throughout North Dakota and Montana. Her two favorites include one just south of Bismarck and the very first home she and Greg built together. The home south of Bismarck features rough finished logs some with branches sticking out creating a uniquely rustic exterior. The home Debbie and Greg built together in Cook City, MT was a project that was near and dear to their hearts. Twisted Twig is a picturesque family retreat 1,000 yards from the side of a mountain that the Lupteks continue to visit each summer.

Spring Cleaning 101 STORY BY HANNAH HAYNES

Winter is coming to an end, and after this North Dakota winter, it’s safe to say spring has long been awaited. As the snow melts and the grass starts to peak through, it’s time to start cleaning out the garage, organizing the closets and purge the house of all unneeded knick knack’s. Spring cleaning can be a daunting task, and we all wish Marie Kondo to come in and take the reins, but let’s take it one room at a time and “get ‘er done.”

First things first: The Supplies Find a cleaning bucket, an old tote bag or a cleaning caddy and begin by gathering all your supplies and putting it in one place, this way you aren’t running back and forth from one room to the next and everything is in a central location.

The Bathrooms Let’s get the dirty work done first. “First is the worst,” so let’s tackle the dirtiest room in the house. 1. Let’s begin by shaking out the rugs,

and throwing them in the wash.

2. Vacuum/sweep the floors and wipe

down the walls.

3. Scrub the shower/tub, toilets and

vanity, but save the mirror for last to

avoid any smudging.

4. Wash the floors 5. Change out the towels and lay down

the freshly cleaned rugs

59

The Bedrooms 1. Always begin by tidying up the room,

putting away the clothes on the floor

and books back on the night stand.

2. Vacuum the carpet, don’t forget to

move the furniture and get

underneath the bed.

3. Open the windows to allow some of

that fresh spring air in

4. Dust the bookshelves and dressers 5. Change the sheets, wash the duvet,

yes and even the bed skirt and

mattress pad

6. Make sure to clean your window

treatments, vacuum the drapes or

dust the blinds and if you are feeling

extra ambitious clean the inside glass

of the windows.

7. Put those fresh, clean sheets back on

the bed

The Kitchen: 1. It’s always good to start with a clean-ish base,

make sure before you start in on the nity

gritty cleaning, you have a tidy space to really

get into the deep cleaning mode. Try and

have the dirty dishes washed and put away

so the counters are clear to move things

around. 2. The freezer/refrigerator, lets begin. Start shelf

by shelf, taking everything out, checking

dates. Wipe clean with hot water and your

choice of cleaning product, don’t forget the

door seals, and make sure they get wiped dry.

3. On to the stove. Remove the grates and

removable parts from the stove top. Wash

the removable stove parts and degrease. *Tip:

hot lemon juice does wonders; the acid will

help lift the grease.

4. Take a warm rag and clean the outsides of all

the cabinets, and the selves inside, you would

be amazed with how much dust and dirt can

make its way into your cupboards.

5. Wash the inside windows and open them up

to allow that cool breeze to freshen the room.

6. Sweep/mop the floors to finish.

Almost done.

Living Room/Family Room 1. Again, tidy the room first and then

begin on the deep cleaning.

2. Dust the ceiling fans, the coffee

tables and the book cases, and even

the entertainment system.

3. Wipe down the walls and base board 4. Vacuum the carpets 5. Be sure to give your couch some care

too. Just because you don’t see any

stains doesn’t mean you don’t have

dust mites. Maybe try an upholstery

cleaner, but be sure to vacuum the

couch cushions and chairs as well.

6. Clean windows and curtains and

throw the blankets in the wash. Now relax, order pizza, because you earned it!
