WEDDING DREAMS

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Hello, Badlands Bride readers! If you are recently engaged or newly married, congratulations! As a newlywed myself, I understand how exciting this period of life is. My name is Maria Brezny, and I have been working at the Bismarck family of publications since my senior year of high school, working behind the scenes on social media, writing stories, and doing pretty much anything else our awesome publishers Hannah and Caroline need. It is weird to look back and realize so many of my life’s biggest milestones have happened while working here!

June 8th, 2024 was the best day ever. Everyone says that about their wedding, but it really was true for us. My husband Luke and I felt so much love and support from our friends and family, and it brought us so much joy. A huge thank you again to everyone who celebrated our wedding with us, in whatever way you could.

Our wedding was not large or lavish, but it was exactly what I wanted, and we did it all on a small budget. Working with vendors I trusted from years of reading our bridal magazine helped me feel confident about the choices I was making.

When planning our wedding, I wanted it to be classic and elegant and also feel like a summer wedding. All the vendors Luke and I worked with were phenomenal at listening to and understanding our vision for the wedding day and then bringing it to life. Rustic Petals chose beautiful flowers for our bouquets, boutonnières, and head table centerpiece. White Lace Bridal made dress shopping

fun and easy, and I came away from the experience with not the dress I’d expected at all, but something even better. Halberstadt’s expertly guided Luke and his groomsmen through the suit fitting process, and Zorells came through with the sparkle and shine. The Bismarck Hotel’s ballroom’s recent renovations brightened and modernized the space, helping the whole wedding shine. Gratitude Spa and Salon’s staff helped me and my bridesmaids feel confident and look our best all day. And our photographer Ben Gumeringer captured it all with beautiful photos that we will treasure forever.

Wedding planning can feel overwhelming, and if you’re like me, a lot of worry can creep in about whether it will all come together in the way you want it to. So, try and take moments to pause and remember why you’re planning this at all. It will put a lot of the decisions into perspective. After all, you’re getting married! Nothing else can quite outshine that.

LIV + JOE the

Cover Story

A love story years in the making, Liv Stromme and Joe Berger knew they’d find their way back to each other. The high school and college sweethearts grew apart after their senior year and would intermittently drift back into each other’s lives through the years until rekindling their love at ND Country Fest. Now, Joe and Liv’s flame burns bright and forever after saying ‘I do’ in a western wildflower soiree at Black Leg Ranch.

THE PROPOSAL

Joe knew his proposal to Liv had to be something special. After scheming with her mom about “forgetting his wallet” and asking her dad to photograph the moment, the scene was set and in front of her parent’s house, by the very tree the couple had their first kiss, Joe got down on one knee and asked Liv to marry him. She said yes and was greeted in her parents’ house with a surprise party including cake, champagne, and most importantly, the people nearest and dearest to the couple.

THE CEREMONY

The couple had their ceremony at the University of Mary. “We knew we wanted to get married at UMary,” Liv explains, “Ever since we were 18, we had always talked about if we were going to get married that was where we would want to do it.” Our Lady of the Annunciation chapel on campus provided the perfect backdrop for the couple to exchange their marriage vows.

THE PARTY

Liv and Joe know how to throw one heck of a party. It wasn’t just the food and drinks that made their reception unforgettable, it was the many incredibly personal details that contributed to the thoughtfulness of the night. Liv’s Jenny Yoo dress was a nod to the modern architecture at the University of Mary, while Joe’s custom suit played perfectly into the western wildflower theme.

Liv designed their logo, and together, Liv and Joe created the Berger Saloon sign. The Erica Thune commissioned painting that hung above the head table, called Invisible Thread, is a stunning nod to the couple’s meandering love story. The pair honored the past with their guest book, using a copy of Joe’s grandmother’s book ‘Little Yellow Jacket,’ and used their own handwriting to pen a thank you note in their program. The flowers were all grown by Liv’s brother, Andrew. “We had so many people that were so excited we were getting married, and it really took a village to get us here, so we wanted to include a lot of people in special ways throughout the day,” explains Liv.

Liv and Joe’s wedding was unabashedly them-their style, their people, and their love. As Liv said, “I always wanted a wedding that felt like you were at an amazing party, and there just happened to be a wedding there as well.”

“WE TOLD EVERYONE THE DRESS CODE WAS ‘COWBOY CHIC’ AND EVERYONE REALLY HAD FUN WITH IT,” LIV LAUGHS, WHILE JOE EXCLAIMS, “PEOPLE SHOWED OUT!”

A FLORAL FAIRYTALE

with Rustic Petals

Soft and luxurious are the words that come to mind for these gorgeous floral arrangements, designed by Jacey Nesland, owner of Rustic Petals. Dreamy colors like creams, soft yellows, and peaches bring a romantic feel to the bride’s bouquet. The bridesmaid bouquets are all in white, but with similar kinds of flowers: ranunculus, garden roses, white veronicas, pink peonies, scabiosa pods, heavenly stock, eucalyptus, pennycress, hints of chamomile and more. This soft, feminine, garden-picked style created a romantic mood for this summer wedding. For more details, visit our blog at www.badlandsbride.com For more information, visit bismarckflowershop.com

THE PERFECT FIT

with White Lace Bridal
Story by: Maria Brezny | Photos by: You, Me, & He

Open for over 40 years, White Lace Bridal is an iconic bridal boutique in the Bismarck area. With a large inventory of dresses in a wide range of sizes and prices, a consulting staff extremely knowledgeable in the industry, and a beautiful downtown storefront, it’s no wonder generations of families shop for their wedding dresses at White Lace Bridal.

White Lace Bridal was recently purchased by Rachel Hornbacher, although Rachel is no stranger to White Lace as she managed the store for six years before stepping back to focus on her event planning business, Dreams to Meet. When the previous owner of White Lace reached out to Rachel about purchasing the store, Rachel was excited to combine her event planning business with White Lace and create a one-stop shop for brides. “I was so excited to step back

into bridal and help brides from gowns to planning. Being able to combine the two businesses is a dream,” Rachel says.

Since taking over ownership of White Lace Bridal, Rachel has expanded their services. “White Lace has always offered bridal, tuxedos, mothers, flowergirls, and bridesmaid dresses,” says Rachel. “Our new services include planning services and speciality bridal appointments. Our store recently got our complimentary liquor license, so we can provide brides with elevated bridal appointments.” The store itself has undergone a refresh and expansion. A distinct retail counter creates separation from the bridal areas, providing guests with more privacy. Updated flooring brightens and modernizes the entire store. Dressing rooms are no longer the traditional walled dressing areas,

but a curtain design which allows for larger dressing rooms as well as makes space for an additional bridal suite. The lower level is now a dedicated sales area, where budget-conscious brides can enjoy a memorable and elevated shopping experience. “We can’t wait to welcome you into our newly transformed space and help bring your bridal vision to life,” says Rachel.

Purchasing a bridal gown at White Lace comes with many perks including discounts on menswear, bridesmaid dresses, mother dresses, flower girl dresses, bridal accessories, gown preservation, and event planning packages. For more details, visit our blog at www.badlandsbride.com. More information can be found at www.whitelacebridalnd.com.

DRESSING IN ROMANCE

Story by: Jennifer Kranz | Photos by: Bailey Keller Photography
with Ellie Stone Bride

Yes, Ellie Stone Bride is a bridal shop, but buying a dress from this beautiful Sioux Falls, SD boutique is about so much more than the sale. It is an intimate experience where stylists truly get to know a bride and what she is and is not looking for, where guests are welcomed with open arms and a glass of wine, and where wedding gown dreams come true.

Ellie Stone Bride is named after the owners Tim and Kalli Blackstone’s eldest granddaughter Ellie. The couple purchased an existing bridal store in 2017, relocated it and changed its name, thus Ellie Stone Bride was born. The shop is known for its wide selection of quality, affordable gowns, exemplary customer service, and gorgeous guest suites. “We believe the space and entire atmosphere is important when shopping for a dress. We designed every dressing room to match the same beauty and fun personality of our brides,” Kalli explains.

Before their appointment, brides are encouraged to take a moment to share their wedding inspiration, dress styles they love, pictures they’ve found, and more about their love story when submitting their appointment information. “Based on this information our stylists will have gowns ready to try on for first impressions,” says Kalli. “Learning more about the bride, her love story, engagement, and wedding vision is our favorite part of the day!”

From there, Ellie Stone’s low pressure and attentive stylists help narrow down choices until the bride’s dream dress is found. Brides get to enjoy the experience of being an Ellie Stone bride. “Our brides get to focus on the feeling of the dresses, the enjoyment on their friends and family's faces, and the warm smiles surrounding her as she shops and celebrates,” Kalli says, smiling.

While bridal gowns are obviously the star of the show, Ellie Stone also offers an impressive selection of accessories, MADE IN THE USA bridesmaid’s dresses, formal gowns, and mother’s dresses as well as inhouse alterations. Suit and tuxedo rentals are also available with the simplest ordering process for everyone in the groom’s party, no matter where they are located.

“We all appreciate how big of a milestone wedding dress shopping is, and we want the experience to be a memorable one,” says Kalli. Your most unforgettable day starts at Ellie Stone Bride, a must stop destination for Badlands brides and their bridal parties. For more details, visit our blog at www.badlandsbride.com. For more information, visit elliestonebride.com.

STORIES

ALICIA + LUKE

South Dakota

Story by: Jennifer Kranz | Photos by: Dan Thorson

A set up, an interrupted hiking proposal, and a creative grand march entry make up the love story and subsequent wedding celebration of Alicia and Luke Voss. Set in stunning Spearfish, SD at Aspen Acres Barn, the couple combined the Wild West vibe of Deadwood with a copious number of wildflowers, providing the perfect touch of whimsy to offset the ruggedness of the rodeo aesthetic.

Both Alicia and Luke love surrounding themselves with friends and family so their main goal, aside from saying ‘I do,’ was to celebrate with the people they love the most. A laid-back atmosphere, a perfect setting, and a day full of love and laughter made for the most amazing way to set out on the adventure of a lifetime.

Story by: Jennifer Kranz | Photos by: Revel Woods Photo

Madeline and Cole Kirchoffner celebrated their ‘I do’ with a beautiful backyard reception at Madeline’s parents' house in Bismarck. After their golf course proposal in Arizona, it was a no brainer for the couple to celebrate their nuptials by carrying the golf theme throughout the party. Personalized, signature golf themed cocktails and a chipping contest that replaced the traditional Dollar Dance

added to the laid-back vision Madeline saw for the couple’s big day.

A huge amount of gratitude goes out to Madeline’s parents as they worked tirelessly to transform their backyard to be wedding ready. The space held special memories for the family and now holds an even bigger milestone for Madeline and Cole.

If you’re looking to have your wedding in an intimate, laid-back and personal location be sure to visit our blog at badlandsbride.com to learn more about the Kirchoffner’s backyard reception.

JULIANNA + LUKE

Montana

Story by: Jennifer Kranz | Photos by: Shea Gibson

He wanted mountains and she wanted a lake. The southern duo of Julianna and Luke Barnette found the perfect setting combining the picturesque Northwest Rocky Mountains and the sparkling waters of Whitefish Lake in Whitefish, Montana at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake.

Hiking has played a big role in Julianna’s and Luke’s relationship, and they’ve travelled the US and National Parks together conquering trails. After getting engaged during a sunset hike, the pair wanted something different than a large Southern wedding. A smaller, more intimate wedding in Montana was the

perfect way for this adventurous duo to say, ‘I do’ and give their Southern guests a taste of the couple’s love of the West.
