FROM THE PUBLISHERS Summer is in full swing and we have taken full advantage of all things outdoors. Here in North Dakota we are limited with our sunny, warm days so we must take them in as we can. From paddle boarding the Missouri river to camping (glamping) in the country, we are making the most of our precious summers and it seems that our neighbors are, too. Check out how people across the state revel in their outdoor spaces with outdoor kitchens, cozy fire pits, breathtaking views, and so much more. Read ahead and watch as Becky and Sam’s dream of a year round pool became a reality, while bringing the outdoors in to play. See how Minot homeowners chose to bring the lake to them, creating an outdoor entertainment space for all to enjoy right in their very own home. If this issue isn’t enough to get you outside and enjoy nature, then maybe you have to check out River City Sports (paddle boards pictured on this page). River City Sports hooked us up for the summer, and we can’t get enough of outside and water time. From backyards, water toys, pools, and Badland views you can expect to be wowed in this issue. Turn the page, get inspired and take this issue OUTSIDE!

re you looking for a backyard fit for both kids and formal gatherings? Look no further than Cyndy Aafedt’s Williston property. A pool, outdoor kitchen
fit for the finest of chefs, several comfortable seating areas, and a basketball court that doubles as an event space are all features that can be found in the Aafedt’s backyard. With the help of contractor Mark Barstad of Barstad Builders, Inc Cyndy has created the home and backyard of her dreams as well as an event space fit for the finest of fêtes.

Cyndy grew up at the 13th Street property and the house and backyard have gone through many changes since her parents built the home in 1957. While it is rumored that only two door frames exist from the original interior of the house, the backyard has made the biggest transformation since Cyndy began renovations in 1999. Drawing on her 20 years of experience in hospitality, she identified a need for an outdoor event space in Williston. Inspired, Cyndy bought the lot next to her house and hasn’t looked back since. “I thought I’m going to make a place in my backyard where my friends and people I know can do something without having to be in a dark room in July,” Cyndy explains, “That’s why the space is set up for groups of people though a family can still enjoy it. That’s why the two gates, that’s why the two bathrooms.”

The backyard was completed in three phases and Mark has been there every step of the way. Working together for the better part of 20 years Cyndy and Mark have gotten to know each other well. Cyndy dreams up an idea and Mark makes it happen. “She knows what she wants and there’s no indecisiveness,” Mark says of Cyndy. Of the renovations he adds, “I can’t think of anything that didn’t turn out great.” Walking into the pool house, you are taken to another world. Refreshing blue walls, a comfortable seating area, and décor brought back from the Aafedt family’s trips to Maui all combine for a grand welcome to the backyard. Of the décor Cyndy says, “We love our time in Maui, so we wanted to bring pieces of the island back to Williston.” Bathrooms in the pool house are convenient for a quick change into a suit to enjoy the hot tub or pool and allow event guests to use the restroom without trekking through the house. The Nanawall doors that open to the outdoor space proved challenging for Mark, “The hardest thing about this build was the Nanawall. The directions were all in German,” he explains. Cyndy’s dream swimming pool and the hot tub are features of the backyard that can be used all year round, even through the cold North Dakota winters. “It was so amazing. You got in the pool when it was zero or 10 below,” Cyndy explains. A boiler heated path from the pool house to the hot tub and pool makes the transition from inside to outside much

easier when the snow arrives. A dark bottom completed Cyndy’s dream pool, “I wanted a pool that was darker in color, you can’t tell when it’s dirty,” she laughs. An unassuming basketball court on a boiler heated concrete pad sits next to the pool house. While the basketball court was a fun space for the Aafedt kids and their friends, Cyndy had other plans for it. “It was a no brainer. The boys think I built a basketball court. I built an event space and then put hoops on each end,” she explains. Always keeping entertainment in mind, Cyndy is able to use the court to put up a tent for large events. The heated concrete pad is perfect for fall gatherings as it keeps the tent warm in cool weather. A fireplace topped with Vegas-inspired fire bowls creates a warm, intimate space for guests to relax and enjoy a meal. The heavy, well-constructed dining table has been used for everything from buffet lines to prom dinners. The many furniture pieces surrounding the perimeter of the yard are sturdy yet easy to move to create different seating options. Across the pool from the pool house sits an outdoor kitchen fit for a La Cordon Bleu trained chef. Cyndy employed the talents of A+A Landscaping and gave them free reign to create the kitchen. “Everything has a place. I have a kegerator and even the paper towels have their 18

spot. There’s an ice machine and a place to mix margaritas,” says Cyndy. The pergola helps shade the area and keeps it cool on hot summer days. Two gated entrances flank the outdoor kitchen creating alternative entrances for parties and events, so guests don’t have to go through the house to get to the party. A putting green sits next to the outdoor kitchen. “It was a last minute add so we wouldn’t have the maintenance of cutting grass,” Cyndy explains. The spot gets a lot of afternoon sun and kids love the putting green. With entertainment at the forefront of her renovation ideas, Cyndy decided to add a butler’s kitchen with access to the backyard. The state-of-the-art appliances and ample prep space are convenient for caterers. During events the windows above the sink open to a countertop creating a bar for guests. Not just for caterers, the butler’s kitchen is also where Cyndy and her family prepare meals, “Its where we cook, where we get dirty,” she explains. Cyndy, with the help of Mark, has created a backyard perfect for a family and for entertaining. She loves seeing the space filled with happy people mingling and enjoying the events. Her favorite part of the yard is under the fan, in the comfortable chairs under the pool house portico, “Its right here because you can see everything,” she explains, “It’s so beautiful at night. I like it during the day, but I love it when the pool is lit, and the fireplace and fire bowls are lit up.”

t’s not news that North Dakota summers are short, but homeowners Becky and Sam have found a way to keep the outdoors “indoors” all year round. Becky,
Sam, and their family moved into their dream home this past February and one of their top wishes on their list was a pool for all seasons. “Ever since we got married, it’s been our dream, when we built our dream house we knew we wanted an indoor pool. I mean you know you’re going to spend a lot putting in a pool anyway you might as well be able to use it more than just a couple of months,” says Sam.

“The great thing about an indoor pool is you get to use it all four seasons. The homeowners complimented the indoor pool so well with the build of their house, incorporating a large overhead door that opens up, the big windows and even the way the pool is tucked back into the back of the home. -Jason Kerner, Backyard Escapes
Aside from the pool being indoors and being able to use it all year, I think the view out of the pool room is gorgeous. The way the landscape drops off the back and the purposeful orientation of the house makes you feel like you are high above the ground. -Tobias Marmon, Builder for Tobias Marmam Construction

“Becky and Sam were looking to capitalize on the incredible view to the north, we were able to pick out a contemporary looking window to go with the style of the homeowners. These windows were not only appealing to the house, but were also made of fiberglass to help with the high humidity of the pool. -Ken Huber, Pella Windows sales rep

Sam’s wife, Becky, was right there with him as they worked on an indoor pool design. Along with multiple subs and their builder Tobias Marman Construction, the husband and wife team took on the major project of building their dream home. “It all started out on a napkin, the design that is,” laughed Sam. From a napkin to reality the designing and planning process took a year and a half, but from there it went fast. The couple broke ground in May of 2018 and were settled in eight months later. “We wanted a space that would flow and make up for the fact that we didn’t have an outdoor pool. So that’s why we did the larger stamp patio and then the garage door so we can enjoy the inside and the outside during the summer. The plan is to eventually have some loungers out here for enjoying the sun and eventually some kind of kitchen with more of a living space that we can enjoy as well,” expresses Sam.

The indoor pool, installed by Backyard Escapes, is attached to the house off the back and flows from the theater entertainment room in the basement. The homeowners were all about safety when it came to their indoor pool, from a window in the kitchen to check on the kids to a walkable pool cover and nonslip concrete, they thought of it all. “Myrhe Concrete was awesome with helping us decide what to put around the pool. We were really torn on what to do with that pool. As far as doing a tile or something else. We were worried about it being slippery and tile gets expensive, but I didn’t want just plain concrete so Heidi helped us come up with a great color to flow from the pool to the outdoors and added mixed textures in both the outdoor patio and pool,” says Becky. Although the couple is still putting the finishing touches on their new home, it is not keeping them from using it. They have been using the pool since the day they moved in and now they can sit outside and enjoy the view on the patio. “The view is why we’re here. We happened upon this lot and fell in love with the view and five years

ago we bought it. For me this is what it’s all about. It’s about capitalizing on the view. I love light. I want light, so I don’t feel like I’m in an outdoor pool necessarily. I want to feel like the outdoors are there,” says Sam. Pella Windows made sure the homeowners were able to capture that outdoor “indoor” feeling. From the views to the indoor pool Becky, Sam, and their family have an incredible space for all seasons incorporating the outdoors, indoors, and capitalizing on all the seasons taking full advantage of North Dakota living.

nstead of leaving the house to head to the lake why not bring the lake to your house? That’s exactly what the Bryantt family did when they decided to add a
pool to the plans while designing their backyard. “We don’t have a ton of time, so we thought we’d bring the lake to us!” smiles Diane Bryantt. The Bryantt’s backyard had a lot of green space and when they started thinking about their layout, they knew they wanted to add landscaping. A run in with Jason Kerner of Backyard Escapes at the Bismarck Home Show all but solidified the addition of a pool to their plans. Teaming up with Mitch Becker from Next 2 Nature allowed the Bryantt’s to create a backyard space that is beautiful, functional, and everything they wanted.

“When installing a pool landscape in an existing yard sometimes you have to do a little more than you might expect to create that staycation paradise everyone wants for their yard and that’s what we were able to accomplish here and that’s really what made it unique for us.” -Jared Winters, Next 2 Nature w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

Entertainment played a big role in the design of the backyard. “We have lots of family and we wanted to make it fun,” explains Diane. The must haves on the Bryantt’s list included a big enough space around the pool for entertainment, lots of benches for older relatives to sit, a space to tan, and a slide to up the fun factor for everyone. Greg loves landscaping and wanted to use the big rocks that he has had for years in the design. The pool was finished at the end of August, so the family was able to swim a few times before the cold set in. One concern that the Bryantt’s had was having a pool in the winter. “We were nervous about a pool in North Dakota, but our pool survived winter very well so that concern is gone,” Diane explained.

Working with Mitch from Next 2 Nature and Jason from Backyard Escapes was an easy process. Not only do the two work together often they also are detail oriented and have a lot of experience. “Jason and Mitch came up and walked the whole property, used a spray paint can and then sent us a blueprint. They were very good at listening and the whole process was fast,” Diane explains, “They were very efficient and the flow of getting work done was easy.” Jason has been particularly helpful on the technology side of things. “The other night I had all the fountains running and the lights on. We have an app on our phone, and I was ready to shut everything off. It wouldn’t shut off, so I text Jason and he shut it off from his phone. He called me and walked me through how to shut it off manually. Every time I’ve had an issue, he has been so helpful,” Diane explains.

Incorporating existing elements in the backyard allowed the Bryantt’s to save time and reuse furniture they already had. The deck was an original part of the backyard and what was previously home to a kennel for dogs and rabbits is now a garden. The Bryantt’s couldn’t be happier with their new space and are looking forward to a full summer enjoying the pool. “We absolutely love it, there’s nothing we would change,” smiles Diane.

s you walk into Steve and Shirley Johs’ backyard you’ll feel an undeniable warmth emanating from the space. While the three fireplaces and
outdoor kitchen certainly play a role in this, it is the overall welcoming nature of the backyard that feels like home. Whether you’re swaying in the hammock daydreaming on a summer afternoon or surrounding the dining table with friends you’re sure to find a spot to rest, relax, and recharge. Five years ago, Shirley took pencil to paper and designed the backyard of the couple’s dreams. “I was inspired by wanting to use the space more often, it’s very private and no one ever knows we’re back here,” Shirley explains. Steve, who had done the finishing work on their home, and their son were called upon to build the outdoor project, “Our son came home from college after his first year and we had him dig 18 post holes. He said he couldn’t believe it and I said ‘yea, college isn’t free,’” Shirley laughs.

ocated in Misty Waters is a modern home built by Knutson Homes. While they perfected the inside, McKenzie Lawler had a vision to take the inside and
seamlessly carry it into outdoor living and achieve the homeowner’s dreams.
Goal #1 Set up for Success “With our close relationship with Knutson Homes we came in even before the foundation was set on this house. It’s always really nice to be in as soon as possible especially because we needed retaining walls because the yard has such a huge slope and drop. That was number one, putting these retaining walls in to accommodate for the height of the house,” explains McKenzie, Landscape Designer at Dakota Outdoorscapes. The goal was achieved. “When you stand in the kitchen and from the dining room it looks like you are actually on the water. It feels like you’re standing on the water, the way she did it.” says the homeowner.

“The whole process was very interesting, it started as a remodel and turned into building a new house. The homeowners were really receptive to all of our ideas and had some great ones of their own. It was great to have the opportunity to incorporate a lot of windows in the kitchen to capture the water and accentuate the waterfront.” –Cory Knutson, builder for Knutson Homes

Goal #2 Seamless flow between indoor and outdoor “We have Goldilocks days but they’re very few. I felt like my furniture and having an outdoor kitchen would be dirty, cleaning it all the time, and we’ll never use it. The goal was to have our kitchen and dining room to be indoor but be able to access it easily from the outside. We wanted to have the same flooring continue outside to maintain that seamless feel between the indoor and the outdoor. This was accomplished by picking materials and trying to figure out what paver color matched the inside flooring the best, creating the perfect flow. Now when we swing open those doors, we can have our food there, if it’s a really bad windy, cold day we can put the heaters out, and drop down the screens,” says the homeowner.

Goal #3 Modern Everything Another goal was to create a modern landscape to match the home’s style, “and that was key on this project making sure all the lines match, which is really hard when you’re starting with retaining walls because you have to start at the bottom and go up. Everything is planned out perfectly with the top to make sure that it matched the bottom walls,” explains McKenzie. “It’s hard with the plant palette that we have available here, but in my mind to try and keep plants modern it’s to do the straight lines, be consistent. There is not a lot of variation in the plant types, they are all the same in a row. They are also mostly green,” says McKenzie.

Goal #4 Satisfaction The final goal was to enjoy the space with the short North Dakota summers. “My favorite, favorite area, is sitting on the patio because I like being outside but I don’t like being in the sun. I love how we have the drop down screens. It’s like I’m outside but I’m really not because I have the protection from the bugs and the wind. Sitting and reading a book, I love, love, love it,” says the homeowner.

RIVER CITY
ROYALTY photos by Glasser Images | Story by Hannah Haynes
This summer has been packed full of fun and outdoor activities. The staff at Bismarck Magazine Corporation has had a blast supporting local businesses and local events including ND Country Fest in New Salem. Although the number one North Dakota music festival is close to home, we decided to take full advantage of the experience, the outdoors, and thanks to River City Sports, a state-of-the-art Ice Castle Fish House. River City Sports has it all-fishing boats, sport boats, pontoons, Ice Castles, UTV’s and all the accessories for great summer recreation. The goal at River City Sports is to make your purchase simple, easy and fun. With seven trained technicians, it’s a one stop shop for purchasing and servicing. Speaking from experience, River City Sports made our weekend effortless and so much fun. Now, let’s talk Ice Castles. Obviously, they are used primarily for ice fishing, but really this is a product for all seasons and camping in one of these could be considered “glamping.” It was a scorcher at ND Country Fest, but luckily our castle was chilled to perfection and was the perfect break from the 95 degree heat. “My favorite part was the fact that the Ice Castle is so 56
well insulated that the air conditioning was a cool 65 degrees. After being outside at the festival for hours in high heat and humidity, it was the best feeling ever,” says Caroline Crary, Co-founder of Bismarck Magazine Corporation. Along with heating and cooling capabilities, the Castle had a fully functioning bathroom with a toilet and shower, tons of storage across the entire space, three different sleeping accommodations including a pull-out couch, a drop-down bunk bed, and the kitchen table doubled as a bed. From beds to showers to a full kitchen the Ice Castle was fit for queens and kings.

Capitol City Sporting Clays with Carson Wentz on Saturday, June 29th. The day started off with a 30 minute Q&A with Carson. All the athletes then rotated between four stations and competed alongside the quarterback. Dakota Community Bank sponsored a free lunch and each athlete left with an AO1, “Audience of One” (Carson Wentz’s foundation), baseball cap at the end.

oncrete is a surprisingly versatile material that functions in a mul-

When asked about projects he would love to work on in the future, Tyler answered, “Just basically anything… from

kitchens to outdoors… anything.” An example of Tyler’s unique work is the waterfall feature in his backyard. The back looks like wood but is actually stamped concrete. With concrete, Tyler creates all types of finishes from smooth and solid, to stone with veining, to natural wood. The smooth and solid edge finish alongside the natural wood one makes this beautiful waterfall not immediately recognizable as concrete. Another project Tyler has done that doesn’t initially appear to be concrete is an island with built-in sinks from
