Pure Barre

Story: Rachel Roehrich| Photos: Glasser Images Pure Barre is a boutique fitness studio with over 500 locations nationwide. The first Pure Barre arrived to the state in Fargo a little over a year ago. Now, Mary Logan, Bismarck studio owner, has brought one here to Bismarck. “I fell in love with Pure Barre while we lived in Montana, after we left I felt like I was chasing it,” says Mary. When Mary moved to Bismarck, she decided this was the perfect opportunity and community to start one. The studio opened its doors this November with a hope to bring more variety to Bismarck’s boutique fitness community.

Luminate Studios Story: Maria Fleck | Photos: Glasser Images

Luminate Studios is a new yoga studio located in north Bismarck that recently opened in November of 2018. Roxanne Jablonsky, the owner, has been doing yoga for ten years and says she is “really excited to be meeting everyone and offering some love and light when they come in and making that personal connection.” The idea for starting her own studio was inspired by a friend’s suggestion to do what “makes her heart sing.” For Roxanne, it’s yoga, and so she began making plans to open her own yoga studio.

CrossFit Tertiary

Story: Maria Fleck | Photos: Glasser Images

Newly opened in November 2018, CrossFit Tertiary is a new CrossFit gym in Bismarck. The three owners, Danny Anderson, John Conklin, and Bowen Gutknecht all met through CrossFit and, because of their shared passion, wanted to build their own gym together. CrossFit is defined as constantly varied movements performed at a high intensity. But this doesn’t mean CrossFit is only for someone in shape. Anyone, at any skill level, can start. Each workout can be tailored to all abilities, because “it is infinitely scalable,” as Danny explains. This is achieved by the intensity from the weights or the speed. John highly encourages everyone to try CrossFit because “it benefits people so much.”

Optimum Therapies Story: Bailey Hauf | Photos by Caroline Crary Some say pain is just weakness leaving your body. However, for many, the pain is real and many just want to find a solution as quickly as possible. Typically, finding the answer will involve going to the doctor or a physical therapist. Finding a doctor or therapist that offers wholeperson therapies can have a major, positive impact on a person’s health. With that philosophy in mind, Dr. Collin Kudrna PT, DPT, OCS started Optimum Therapies in Bismarck to offer physical therapy in a way that approaches the whole person. Dr. Denise Wetzel PT, DPT joined Optimum Therapies in November of 2017. Dr. Kudrna and Dr. Wetzel they approach the treatment of pain in a way that works to discover the cause for each individual person rather than treating everyone the same based on just a symptom.

Proximal 50 New Year, New You... But wait, what’s wrong with the old you? Story by Vanessa Lennick | Photo by Glasser Images

Nothing. Nothing is wrong with the old you, or the current you. It’s tempting to want to set resolutions for the new year - it symbolizes a fresh start or a reset so many of us are eager for. But if you are going to set a resolution, could you resolve to embrace YOU, instead of focusing on where or how you are falling short? Ditch the mentality that something needs to be fixed and instead learn how to listen to your body, how to become your own advocate, and how to take the best care of YOU. Yes, you may need to lose weight, give up a bad habit, or budget better - but putting the pressure on yourself ‘just because’ it’s the start of the new year, is already setting yourself up to fail. When we focus on self-acceptance first, we gain a sort of peace and clearer understanding of what actually needs to change and we make those changes when we are ready, NOT when the calendar tells us to.

an ideal appearance does not guarantee happiness. We can get stuck on the thought that an ideal image has the exclusive ability to bring happiness. Instead, focus on creating a positive, healthy body image so you can address all of who you are not just your weight or appearance. 2. Shift the way you talk to yourself and about yourself. Instead of your body being a nuisance or a piece of luggage you are obligated to drag along - which causes healthy eating to seem like a chore - think of it as a well oiled machine that is well maintained with quality foods to maximize metabolism and digestion. Over time these thoughts will help create a very different body that is well nourished and has more energy.

This does not mean we are promoting inaction, instead we want to redefine the idea of resolutions and, ultimately, of total wellness. So what can you do?

3. Stop looking for an immediate solution or quick fix. Lasting change requires self-reflection, sincere effort, and time. We often grow impatient and want change right now. We criticize ourselves because we cannot live up to our impossibly high standards and it causes us to overlook the simple things that we know would transform us.

1. Accept what is. Acceptance of our limitations and acceptance of our demands. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and ask for help when it comes to your limitations and demands. Accept that

We have heard it so many times, “I know what to do for myself, I just don’t do it!” You know you need to move more, eat better, manage stress, etc, etc. But when you place the pressure on

30

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2019

yourself to do it in 30 days or by some drastic change, chances are it won’t last. Go into 2019 thinking ‘how can I best nourish myself,’ not of what I should or shouldn’t do (or eat!). So let’s commit together, right now, to changing the idea of resolutions for a healthier & happier you. Vanessa is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at Proximal50 Life Center. As a wife of a shift worker and mother of two children who provide her with nutritional challenges of their own (yes even her kids can be picky eaters!) – Vanessa understands the challenges everyone faces and this inspires her even more to make nutrition an important part of daily living!

630 East Main 630 East Main Bismarck, ND January will bring financing and appraisal approvals for the new development being built just south of the Radisson Hotel in Downtown Bismarck. Construction on the mixeduse development will start early spring. Apartments will take the top 2 floors and commercial space will occupy the ground floor. “This will provide a really great opportunity for smaller businesses to be able to lease ground level, street front space in downtown Bismarck,” states Taylor Daniel, commercial realtor and listing agent for the building. The building will provide a staple location on both end caps of the building that can be leased for roughly 1500-3000 square feet. These prime corners will activate the building and the walkability of the downtown neighborhood. 630 East Main complex will open up the live, work, play downtown lifestyle. “Everything this development is providing is the final piece that downtown is lacking. It’s the missing link that downtown Bismarck needs to be incredible. I’m excited to help these businesses and this development to bring a lot of fun, new opportunities for the downtown area and intern impact the city’s economy,” says Daniel.

Constructing Your Dreams Bismarck home builders are excited to be a part of this project because of the many wonderful conveniences and outdoor activities nearby. “Some of Bismarck’s top custom home builders Big River Builders and Aspire Homes have already reserved residential lots at Cottonwood Parkview Addition,” Wachter stated. Meet Some of the Builders A great deal of thought has gone into the development and planning for the project, and Aspire Homes is thrilled to be a part of the Cottonwood Parkview Addition. “We foresee it as feeling like its own community. The local parks, walking trail systems, numerous sports fields, and complexes all add value, and the single-family lots will back up to green space with no immediate backyard neighbors, making these lots very unique and private,” explains Greg Meidinger, owner of Aspire Homes. The excitement of being a part of Cottonwood Parkview Addition is mirrored at Big River Builders. “As longtime residents of southwest Bismarck, my family and I have enjoyed the many benefits of living in the area.
