PUBLISHERS

Happy New Year! We can hardly believe it is 2023. Heading into year eight of publishing for our community, our team at Bismarck Magazine has not only been very nostalgic but also started reflecting on how great our community really is.

Although most of our team is not native to Bismarck/Mandan we have made it home, living, working, and playing in this community and we are so excited to watch it grow.

It’s the NEW YEAR! This issue always highlights the new businesses that we are looking forward to seeing in the new year. Not only is the new year about new things coming to town, but we also always make our New Year’s resolution list…that almost always has something on it like “getting in shape,” “working out at least once a week,” “losing ten pounds.” Am I right? Well Bismarck Magazine wants to make that goal of yours WAY more fun!

We scoured the city to find as many fun, unique and effective workout classes as we could. Now, I will tell you, we weren’t able to get all of them, but we found a lot. Check out 14 different community work out classes that you can switch up your workout with, and you don’t even feel like you’re working out!

Here’s the best part about this issue, we are giving away FREE CLASS PASSES ALL MONTH LONG! That’s right, we have partnered with these 14 studios to give away passes for you to try, no strings attached. We want you to be your best, healthiest selves as we enter the new year and help keep you going on your New Year’s resolutions.

Not only are we looking to help you stay healthy with your body and mind, but don’t forget February 9th is Giving Hearts Day. We have many great non-profits in our communities that rely on your support this next month. Head to givingheartsday.org to pledge your donation either monetarily or in service. Help make a difference this year!

Don’t forget to flip this issue over! It’s our double cover issue with Bismarck Bridal on the flip side. If you or someone you know is newly engaged and planning a wedding, be sure to pass this issue along to help them with the planning process!

Happy New Year Bismarck/Mandan! We are so excited to see what year eight brings and how we can continue to support, highlight, and give back to this community.

Relax and Rejuvenate

Facials are an amazing option for relaxation and rejuvenation. Kharma Vida offers highquality facials that are tailored to your individual skin needs. The first step for getting a facial is consulting with an esthetician. Your esthetician will ask you questions like, do you use skin care products at home, do you exfoliate regularly, does your skin tend to be oily, dry, or mixed, and more, in order to get a sense of what to recommend for your facial. They also ask why you are getting a facial. “I always ask people, ‘Are you here to relax with some health benefits to your skin, or are you here to treat your skin and then relax a little while you’re here’ because that gives a really great idea what treatment I’m going to recommend,” explains Andi Thon, owner of Kharma Vida.

If you are looking for relaxation, the Organic Custom Facial is the most popular because it has amazing skin benefits and also helps you completely relax, which is good for your overall health, not just your skin. This facial usually takes about 45-50 minutes. If you are looking

for a skin treatment facial, your esthetician will likely recommend a treatment that includes a dermaplane, peel, microderm, or oxygen treatment, in order to get at the deeper issues in your skin.

The Kharma Vida Signature Facial is a staple. To get a KV Signature Facial, you take the Organic Custom Facial and add on a blueberry peel, dermaplane, and self-heating mud. However, Andi is always coming up with fun facials that reflect the holidays and seasons. For Valentine’s Day, they offer a Chocolate Strawberry Facial, perfect for a romantic gift. For more information on the facials and other treatments Kharma Vida offers, check out their page at https://kharmavida.com

CYCLE BAR

WHERE? CycleBar

WHAT IS CYCLEBAR? “CycleBar is an indoor cycling studio, with group led fitness classes where the goal is to have low impact but high intensity forms of cardio in a safe, fun environment,” explains Mary Logan, co-owner of CycleBar, along with Taylor Gawryluk. CycleBar offers six different kinds of classes: classic, performance, connect, empower, xpress, and foundation. Each class offers something different, so there is something for everyone, no matter where they are in their fitness journey. Mary has seen riders grow in strength, confidence, and happiness after falling in love with not only the workout, but the community at CycleBar. “We like to know who people are, more than just a body on a bike,” she describes. “We know your name; we know your family’s name. We are there to help you on your journey.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “Don’t be afraid of the unknown… You won’t know until you try it. Our instructors are trained in depth on getting you fitted on the bike properly, so your body is safe. What is amazing about CycleBar is even though it’s group led, it’s individual at the same time. I like to say as teachers we are like airline stewardesses. We are handing out options to you, but if you prefer to stay at your own pace or are more comfortable staying in the saddle rather than rising up out of the saddle, that’s perfectly fine because the ride is honestly all about you. We’re just there providing super fun music and opportunities for challenges if you wish,” says Mary.

PURE BARRE

WHERE? Pure Barre

WHAT IS PURE BARRE? “Pure Barre is a wonderful workout,” says Julie Mehlhoff, owner of Pure Barre in Bismarck. “It’s 50 minutes, full body, from head to toe. We target isolated muscles from your shoulders, your back, your core, your thighs, your ankles, to work on balance, flexibility, stability… It’s all focused on the micro muscles rather than the macro muscles.” The reliance on body resistance within the workouts means it’s accessible to any age. Julie says they have every age range in their classes, from a 14-year-old to a 75-yearold.

Pure Barre offers four different class formats. First is classic, which is the original barre class created for Pure Barre. It is a total body work out that will tone your things, arms, core, seat, and more. The second is empower, which is a cardio impact workout that incorporates weights in order to elevate your heart rate, build strength, and increase metabolism. The third class offered is reform, which utilizes resistance bands and sliders to target muscles in a specific way that tones and defines them. The final class Pure Barre offers is called strength and restore and, similar to yoga, elongates muscles, along with refocusing and centering the body through strength and balance.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “ The hardest part is walking through the door,” encourages Julie. “Come in and have the experience of having the class. Allow yourself to be a beginner and try something new. Barre has its own technique, it has its own terminology, it has its own community, its own culture, but it’s amazing what you can experience both physically and mentally in the class. You feel empowered, you feel inspired. It can almost even be a spiritual experience when you’re taking a class because you’re expanding your body and your skills in ways you never thought you could.”

SWEAT CO.

WHERE? The Sweat Co.

WHAT IS THE SWEAT CO? “It is a 50 minute full body, high intensity, but low impact workout,” describes Allison Schwan, studio manager and coach at Sweat Co. in Mandan. “You can expect a full body burn but no jumping or anything like that. The movements are really slow, and they hit every muscle group in 50 minutes. It’s all done on something called a Megaformer. That’s what our machine is called.” The Megaformer is what helps each client modify the workout to themselves. “The machine can make things more difficult or easier,” says Allison. “Every move is modifiable. We can make things easier by adjusting spring load or more difficult.”

If you are intimidated by the idea of beginning a new workout, Sweat Co. might be the right fit for you. “Honestly, beginners love it because it’s gentle enough that if you’re not super in shape it’s not as confronting as maybe jump squats or burpees, but it’s super effective, so you keep burning calories 24-48 hours after you leave, so you really feel like you got a good workout, not only in the 50 minutes, but it still feels like your body is doing something for a day or two later,” describes Allison. And she has seen an incredible amount of success stories over her time at Sweat Co, from people with traumatic brain injuries, to people with knee injuries, to post-natal women. “All levels, all situations are welcome,” Allison says.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “Just do it. And it’s dark, no one can see you except the coach,” says Allison. “Just do it, if you’re scared, it’s okay to be scared. Do it anyway.”

TRANSITIONS YOGA

WHERE? Transitions Yoga

WHAT IS TRANSITIONS YOGA? “We are a small boutique fitness yoga studio. We have a studio in Bismarck and Mandan. We are trying to provide a place where people can feel comfortable coming in and practicing yoga,” describes Sigrid Strebe, owner of Transitions Yoga. Anyone can join a class at Transitions Yoga. “It’s not about creating ridiculous shapes that you would see on magazines, but shapes that would work for you and your body,” says Sigrid. The Bismarck studio offers heated classes, along with everything from a yin or an easy style class to heated vinyasa. The Mandan studio offers the same, as well as aerial yoga.

The community at Transitions Yoga is something Sigrid has worked hard to cultivate, and she believes it is one of the best parts of her studio. If you are a newcomer to Transitions, they will ensure they connect you with the other members there right away. In addition to being a part of a community, joining Transitions will help you grow in confidence, mentally and physically. “The things that are happening within your body or your brain are accessible for everyone,” says Sigrid. “Just sometimes you have to get past the physical barriers.” Sigrid has seen countless students grow in confidence since the first time they stepped on a mat.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “The first thing we always hear is I’m not flexible,” says Sigrid. “You don’t have to be flexible to start. You just have to be willing to try. Our teachers have been trained on how to break down the postures or make it accessible for whomever shows up. And we were all beginners. Everybody was a beginner the very first time they stepped on their mat, so we can all come together.”

SOLIDCORE

WHERE? Solidcore

WHAT IS SOLIDCORE? “Solidcore is a Pilates based workout. It’s low impact, very high intensity,” describes Emily Medalen, head coach community manager at Solidcore. Solidcore offers physically challenging but individualized workouts, so no matter where someone is at in their fitness, Solidcore offers something for them. “We have all different ages, men, women, college students, up to a 75-yearold who comes to class. It’s very challenging, but a lot of people love it because we move slow to get into those slow-twitch muscle fibers and really work there, rather than using momentum to work out.” Most classes at Solidcore are 50 minutes, but they also offer an express class that is 30 minutes once a week, and over holidays, a super solid class that is 65 minutes.

Part of the appeal of Solidcore is the intensity of the workouts. “It’s a really special life changing workout. You prove to yourself every day that you can do things you never thought that you could,” describes Emily. However, the community at Solidcore is another reason Solidcore stands out. “I think it’s also extra special because of the people,” says Emily. “There’s something about the blue lights and the music being super loud. They walk in, and they feel like they’re in a safe haven.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “I get it,” says Emily. “It does look intimidating from the outside, but you won’t know until you try just coming in and working hard for 50 minutes and being pushed by a coach that’s here to help you and totally here to guide you. Anyone else that’s around you on the machines isn’t going to be looking at you, judging you. We’re all on our own path, so come in and try it and prove yourself wrong.”

REGYMEN

WHERE? Regymen Fitness, powered by Verge Fitness

WHAT IS REGYMEN? “Regymen is a franchised boutique workout experience,” says Angela Petron, fitness manager at Regymen Fitness. “It is designed to incorporate high intensity interval training (HIIT). In each Regymen class we use heart rate monitors to get people into their high intense interval zones anywhere from 15-20 minutes out of the 45 minute workout.” Regymen is individualized, highly effective, and a great weight loss exercise that incorporates treadmills, weight rooms, TRX bands, battle ropes and more. “The reason we like HIIT is you’re working smarter, not harder,” explains Angela. “Science has shown that when you burn in your high heart rate zones, that you get what we call the after-burn effect. You can burn an extra 100-200 calories based on your gender and your body matrix. So, you’re doing nothing after class but you’re still burning calories because you got your heart rate up into those high zones.”

The attention to individuals is what makes the workout so effective. “We have athletes come in, we have moms who are coming off of having babies and getting back into fitness, and we have people who are in their 60s and 70s who can come into Regymen. Everyone is moving at their own pace. Some people are running, some are walking, some people use heavy dumbbells, some people use light dumbbells, We have options for everyone at every fitness level,” describes Angela. “My favorite part of coaching Regymen is that no matter who is in the class, there’s always good energy. It’s always fun, and every day the workout is different.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID

TO START? “When you come to class for the first time, the coach knows you’re new,” says Angela. “The coach will go through and do a private one-on-one walk around and show you the equipment and go off the mic in class to help you, to demonstrate, to give you instructions.”

PULSE

WHERE? Proximal50

WHAT IS PROXIMAL PULSE? “Pulse is basically heartrate-based training,” explains Tana Trotter, owner of Proximal50. “Everyone who comes in puts a heartrate monitor on that is catered to their age, weight, gender, and height. All of those things calculate it. What’s nice is that it’s really individualized. You can be just starting exercise and be with someone who’s been exercising for years, and it doesn’t affect it because your heartrate and your box on the screen is only for you.” Because of this, the workouts can both challenge and support everyone who comes in.

Within Pulse, there are different training zones, depending on the kind of workout you are going for that day. Tana explains, “We have steady state, which challenges your endurance. We want you to control your heart rate while you move. Then, we go up into tempo, and that’s where we want you to get your heart rate high, but then it’s also really important that you can bring it back down. Then, there’s the interval, which is meant to get you into the red zone out of your comfort zone for short periods of time. The idea is that’s something you should do once a week. Usually, you see each type of workout once a week because then we have what is called blend and hybrids. Those are bringing all those aspects of it into one workout. Then, we also just have a basic strength day, where we just really try to build your muscle strength.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE

WHO

IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “It’s completely individualized to you," says Tana. "All of our coaches are trained to give you something easier to do than that move or something harder to do than that move… the heart rate, which people may get intimated by, is what makes it fit for you, and just you and where you’re at.”

YOUVITALIZE

WHERE? YOUvitalize

WHAT IS YOUVITALIZE? YOUvitalize is a wellness spa and venue that offers a variety of services aimed at helping their clients look at their holistic health. A few of these services include massages, facials, nutrition coaching, and more. One of their more unique exercise options are bungee fitness classes. “Bungee fitness makes you feel lighter because you have the bungee to pull you up,” explains Shar Dukart, owner of YOUvitalize. “You run, you jump, you feel like you’re flying. We do pushups, but they’re easier. We do some cardio kickboxing moves, some yoga, some gymnastics, different things like that.” The classes are individualized, both by who is in the class at the time, and by the specific instructors. “Most instructors are dancers, so they incorporate those moves into the workout,” says Shar. “It’s a very good cardio workout.”

In the summer, bungee fitness is offered only through parties. In the winter, parties are still an option, but classes are also regularly offered on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The community YOUvitalize has built is Shar’s favorite part of her work. “There’s always new people coming in as well as the regulars, so it’s a lot of fun just to meet all the people that come in and want to enjoy our services and have some fun.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “Come and try it,” encourages Shar.

LUMINATE

WHERE? Luminate Studios

WHAT IS LUMINATE STUDIOS? “Luminate Studios opened four years ago. We offer a variety of classes, yoga, barre, Tabata, and heated classes,” describes Roxanne Jablonsky, owner of Luminate Studios. The Tabata class is one of the more popular classes. It’s 45-50 minutes long composed of around eight exercises, 20 seconds each, a great high intensity but a low impact workout. Barre, another popular option, is a workout that is a combination of yoga, ballet, and Pilates. “Some of the stuff is done at the bar, and some is done on the mat,” says Roxanne. “It’s good for balance, coordination, strength training.” Another popular class is the fusion class which is a heated class that incorporates yoga sculpt, yoga flow, barre, and Pilates.

If you are looking for a workout that will also get you involved in a supportive community that will help challenge you at the same time, that’s what Luminate Studios is all about. “We have a very uplifting and encouraging community that welcomes people… I just love that people are eager to come back out and try to take care of themselves and be a part of a community,” says Roxanne.

If you are brand new to yoga, Roxanne recommends starting with any class that says easy flow, which are offered three times a week. However, all classes are accessible as the coaches are trained in how to offer modifications for all moves.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “There’s no obligation. Everyone gets their first class free, and we do offer individualized instruction, especially if they’re new. We can pay special attention to them and help them be more comfortable, providing them different modifications or props that can support them in their practice,” says Roxanne.

MIND AND BODY BOXING

WHERE? Mind and Body Boxing

WHAT IS MIND AND BODY BOXING? “Mind and Body Boxing is a place for learning how to box properly,” says Kayla Klemetson, owner of Mind and Body Boxing. “We’re boxing for fitness, but we’re boxing properly at the same time, using proper form and training like a fighter would but in a fitness sense.” Mind and Body Boxing offers ten different classes, including total body fitness, strength training, pure boxing, and hybrids of all three. “We’re offering everything for your entire weekly workout routine,” says Kayla.

Kayla started out as a personal trainer at a gym where she taught cardio kickboxing. Along the way, Kayla taught herself how to box properly and saw a major shift in her workouts and the workouts she was able to offer others. When Covid forced gyms to close, Kayla saw an opportunity to bring Bismarck something new, something completely different from the typical cardio kickboxing offered, and she opened Mind and Body Boxing. “The energy, power, and strength you feel from throwing punches and kicks on a bag with proper technique… it’s not comparable and I’ve lived that. Both are amazing, find your thing, but you’ve got to at least try coming to hit a bag,” encourages Kayla.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “I can relate,” says Kayla. “It is scary trying new things. I feel like the whole reason that people are feeling comfortable coming here is because I was that scared person. I didn’t like to go to the gym. I wanted to create a space that was comfortable… be scared but don’t let it stop you because you never know. It might be the next thing that you love.”

WATER AEROBICS

WHERE? Bismarck Parks and Rec

WHAT IS WATER WORKS? “It’s really a combination of things,” explains Jessica Ribeland, one of the group fitness instructors for Bismarck Parks and Rec. “It’s cardio, so water aerobics, and some strength focused exercises. You have your ups and downs. You have some cardio, so you’re kind of high intensity, so then we’re raising the blood pressure, getting the heart going, so we have that cardiovascular. Then, we slow it down with some strength-based movements where we’re using the resistance of the water to increase strength, so it’s a good balance of both things.”

Water Works is one class of several offered throughout the week, including aqua dance, water walking, aqua rock, aqua balance, and deep water. Exercising in the water is kinder on joints and muscles, making it a safe workout for all bodies. Jessica explains, “For water aerobics, you have the buoyancy of the water, so it kind of helps reduce some tension. When you have gravity on dry land, it can put a lot of pressure on joints and muscles, so the water helps assist with that. It’s a good option for people who have arthritis, joint pain, or are recovering from an injury.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “I think it’s worth a try, especially if you’re new to exercise. I think water aerobics is a great way to start because it’s not as high intensity as some of our land exercises which can be slightly intimidating,” says Jessica. Linsay Berg, fitness and wellness specialist for Bismarck Parks and Rec, adds, “There are modifications for everything. You go at your own pace of what you’re able to do.”

HOTWORX

WHERE? Hotworx

WHAT IS HOTWORX? “Hotworx is a 24 hour infrared fitness studio that’s virtually instructed with 11 different workout types,” describes Nicole Privratsky, co-owner of Hotworx. All Hotworx sessions take place in a dry heat infrared sauna and are led by a virtual instructor. A few of the more popular isometric workouts include hot iso, hot yoga, hot Pilates, and hot barre none. They also offer HIIT sessions which are only 15 minutes. “Because of the infrared your core temperature is heating up really quickly, so it’s more workout in less time,” explains Tori Rohr, co-owner of Hotworx. One of the more popular HIIT options is hot blast.

Working out in infrared heat not only makes your workout more effective in less time, it also has several other health benefits, some of which may surprise you. “It helps with your skin. It helps moisturize it over the winter. You’re not that dry and itchy like most people are during the cold times. Skin rejuvenation is one of the benefits,” says Sierra Rohr, co-owner at Hotworx. “[It] also decreases inflammation, increases circulation, and then, of course, pain relief. And then you’re detoxing too. You detox seven times more from the workout in the infrared than in the traditional sauna.”

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “People love the size of the studio. It’s not overwhelming,” says Nicole. “And with the virtual instruction they don’t have to think about what they’re doing because it’s a semi-private workout. You only have maybe up to two people with you. You could even be alone. The size is what people really love.” Tori adds, “I think the other thing people are concerned about is the heat. We say to go at your own best pace. If you need to step out you can, and then return so that they can become acclimated to it.”

SOUL HAVEN

WHERE? Soul Haven Studio

WHAT IS SOUL HAVEN? “Soul Haven is a boutique fitness studio located downtown that offers yoga, booty, barre, rebounding, and boxing,” explains Megan Grad, co-owner of Soul Haven. “Our mission is just bridging the gap between community and fitness.” Soul Haven offers 16 different classes, all aimed at strengthening a different part of the body in a different way. “We truly believe that the way to that optimal fitness level is muscular confusion, constantly changing up what you do, so your muscles are able to grow and adapt in a different way,” says Kelly Hoeven, co-owner of Soul Haven.

Some of the more unique classes Soul Haven offers are rebounding classes, which utilize a rebounder (aka a small trampoline). “There’s currently 701 bounce, rebound rebel, revolve and inbound,” describes Kelly. “We have everything from a quick and dirty 30 to more of a choreographed dance on the rebounder or something that’s more relaxed like yin yoga. All of our formats have a yoga foundation, including the rebounders.” Rebound classes are low impact but high intensity. “People who don’t want the plyometrics, the hardcore jumping on a floor, that kind of thing, come to these classes and get an almost like they’re on a treadmill kind of heart workout. It just has such amazing benefits also, just for your muscular system and pelvic floor,” describes Kelly.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “Just take that leap because we have such a community here that there’s no comparison,” says Megan. “There’s no expectation to be a certain way. You come as you are, and it’s the community you come back for, not just the classes… We have a very upbeat, energetic vibe, really close-knit group.”

THE STUDIO

WHERE? The Studio: Wellness Community of Mandan

WHAT IS THE STUDIO? “Our mission here is to build better habits together, and we do that through having a studio featuring all types of movement classes,” describes Keri Vammer, owner of The Studio. “Our wellness side is a little different. It’s meant to help people connect with a practitioner and dive deeper into what’s going on… we really focus on the mental health and wellness aspect of mind, body, and soul. Whatever that means for you, we’re here.”

The Studio offers a wide variety of classes, from slower paced to power classes: “Our classes go from rebel yoga, which is coined by our team here, to the vinyasa, which is the more amped up, strength building, powerhouse kind of styled class. We put weights on your ankles or wrists and move through the class so by the time you’re done with class you feel like you had your butt kicked,” says Keri. Some fan favorite classes include the Buti classes, moxie classes, and rage yoga. The classes aren’t the only thing that draws people to The Studio. “We’re a community… All of us here at the studio are so connected… we try to express that we genuinely care about everyone.” The Studio also offers live-stream classes if you ever need to stay home but still want the opportunity to be active.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED BUT AFRAID TO START? “If someone has never done yoga before, I always start them out with our yin yoga class and our restorative classes,” says Keri. “My favorite thing to hear people say is I can’t do yoga because I can’t stretch. It makes me chuckle because the whole purpose of yoga is to offer the ability to help you find that stretching.”

DAKOTA BREWING

On the corner of 26th Street and Main Street in Bismarck, across from Big Boy and Little Cottage, sits a large warehouse. This building will soon be undergoing a massive renovation that will completely transform it. The history of why the building was first built and how it ended up essentially sitting empty for so many years is fascinating.

The idea that would eventually result in the construction of this warehouse came from a local Bismarck businessman, Clyde Johnson. On a visit to Montana, he stopped at the Great Falls Brewing Company where the brewery president suggested he start a brewery in North Dakota. At the time, there were no breweries in North Dakota. Beer was being

shipped in from neighboring states like Montana, Wisconsin, and Missouri. In addition to the high demand, North Dakota had an abundance of locally grown barley which prompted Johnson to bring this idea to a group of businessmen in Bismarck. After doing some further market research, the group went ahead with the plan, and Dakota Malting and Brewing was officially incorporated at the end of 1959.

In order to raise money for the brewery, Dakota Malting and Brewing offered common stock to the public. Shares were exclusively sold to North Dakota residents for

the price of $1.

With support from over 3,600 investors, which included 267 taverns, they raised one million dollars in capital. After a long search for the best site for the brewery, Bismarck was finally chosen, and construction on the site began in June of 1960. The brewery’s design was inspired by the Great Falls Brewing Company with a capacity of 65,000 barrels per year.

Dakota Malting and Brewing’s flagship product was Dakota Beer

which became available for purchase on July 1st, 1961. The beer was met with generally high praise, and demand for the beer began to climb. However, in the spring of 1962, not even a year after opening, the brewery began receiving numerous complaints about the beer, saying it was unpalatable and caused diarrhea. Investigation by the brewery revealed the water systems did not have an activated carbon filter installed. The brewery was pumping over 90,000 gallons of water from the Missouri River which has an oil base.

The Brewmaster had been told the filter

was required to remove the phenol taste; however, he believed the boiling process would steam off the phenol. He was fired, and the issue was quickly resolved, but the brewery’s reputation was damaged.

As a result, beer sales in July and August (peek beer selling months) plummeted. The brewery operated at a loss for almost two years before they finally broke even in 1963. Dakota Beer began to grow in popularity again, and sales began to improve. Sadly, this wasn’t enough to overcome their huge financial debt and inadequate

financing, and Dakota Malting and Brewing was forced to close their doors September 1965 after only four years of brewing. The building was sold in 1970 to help repay part of the debt, and it still stands to this day.

Now, thanks to the effort of Tobias Marman, owner of Tobias Marman Construction, this building will be given new life and brought into the 21st century. “This is an iconic building in Bismarck with a cool aesthetic, great location, and high traffic count that has sat obsolete for a long time. On top of being a special building, we took on this project to give the building purpose,” explains Tobias. To make the old brewery a usable space,

Tobias plans to take off half the building to make room for parking. He hopes to turn the old brewery into a new space for restaurants, boutiques, even medical offices, something the east end of Bismarck past 19th street has a real need for. The layout will resemble an open-air mall, but enclosed due to North Dakota’s climate. Most of the work will be interior, so until the project nears its completion date, the building will look similar to how to how it currently does.

After renovating the

inside, Tobias’ crew will tear off the north side of the building, finish the parking lot, do landscaping, and open its doors to tenants.

Tobias hopes to have the building completely renovated and ready for tenants by next July.

THE IDEA

New to Bismarck is Estate Gallery, a small boutique that sells estate and vintage jewelry, along with previously owned designer handbags, local products, and a variety of eco-friendly and upcycled items. Owner of Estate Gallery, Lacey Madsen, also owns Lacey’s Custom Jewelry, where the initial idea for Estate Gallery was started. “I was getting all these estate pieces that were coming into Lacey’s that I didn’t want to rip apart,” Lacey. “They were too beautiful, I didn’t want to melt them, and we don’t sell estate pieces at Lacey’s.” So, Lacey started collecting pieces, with the idea of opening another store in the back of her mind. At the same time, Lacey’s Custom Jewelry has an estate jewelry sale once a year in October. The response to this sale was so positive, that Lacey realized it was time to open another store. So, in October of 2022, Estate Gallery officially opened its doors.

MORE THAN JUST JEWELRY

In considering what she wanted her new store to be, Lacey realized she didn’t want it to be just jewelry. “I already have a jewelry store,” Lacey explains. “I consider that the fancier part, and this is my brain.” Inspired by the ecofriendliness of vintage jewelry, Lacey started looking into other ways she could support recycled products, and her store went from only estate jewelry pieces, to previously owned designer handbags to other upcycled items, to clothes, to local art pieces. “Every little bit helps. I think if all of us are trying a little bit, it’s helpful in the long run. You don’t have to be like, I’m giving up all plastics… But if we can do a few things that are helpful, sustainable, why not?” describes Lacey. Everything in the store was chosen with care, after being researched and personally tested by Amy Beehler, manager of Estate Gallery. “I have told so many customers, every piece in here has a story. If you have any questions, just ask,” says Amy. From the handbags to the art, every piece in the store has been carefully selected.

DESIGNER HANDBAGS

If you are looking for something high-end that is still eco-friendly, shopping for previously owned designer items is a perfect avenue. Estate Gallery offers a selection of previously owned designer bags from designers like Louis Vuitton. “It gives people an option for pieces that Bismarck hasn’t had,” says Amy. Plus, you still get the designer label without the price tag.

CLOTHING

It was not a part of the initial plans for Estate Gallery to carry clothing, but the discovery of eco-friendly clothing brands changed that. “We found companies that make clothing out of recycled materials, and it just again snowballed from there,” describes Amy. One of these companies is called The Landmark Project, which allots certain proceeds of their sales to support the National Parks. Plus, some of their shirts are made from recycled materials. Another cool business Estate Gallery carries is a company that creates incredibly soft winter hats and gloves made from bottlecaps.

ACCESSORIES

Finding unique sustainable products has become Lacey and Amy’s new passion. They carry a line of accessories like sunglasses, wallets, and handbags made from cork. “What they do is they strip the cork off the cork oak trees and the trees will grow it back. They boil it, press it, and turn it into fabric. They don’t tear down the trees,” explains Amy. They also carry accessories and other pieces made from bamboo, which is also very sustainable due to its fast growth rate, which is three times as fast as wood. They also carry purses made from recycled materials like army tents or leather remnants from designer factories. “It’s been so fun finding these pieces that you don’t find everywhere, but they’re very eco-friendly,” says Amy.

LOCAL ARTISTS AND BUSINESSES

After bringing in clothing and accessories, they turned to art pieces. “The next logical step for us was to find local artists,” says Amy. “We have a local gentleman who does our metal signs who just makes super fun pieces. We have a gentleman who does some woodworking for us.” Then, they looked for other local businesses they could support by selling their products in store. “We found a gal that makes soy wax melts, but we carry them in little glass containers,” says Amy, “and if you bring the glass container back, you get a dollar off your next one, and then we will send those back to her to reuse.” They also sell lotions by Bubble Island, who makes a signature scent and lip balm for Estate Gallery. “I said I want something that smells old but good,” explains Lacey. “And it does smell vintage and fun.”
