The saying goes, 'if walls could talk they could tell one heck of a story." We wish they could, but since our walls hold these stories all to themselves, Bismarck Magazine will have to tell them for you. We have watched our community grow exponentially over the past five years; from new builds up north to the revitalization of our downtown, all the way out to Lincoln and Mandan, all parts of our community are growing. According to the Bismarck-Mandan Board of Realtors, home sales are up by 2%, the average sale price of a residential property decreased by 1% and there has been a 5% increase in the number of units sold. Our July issue is a sneak peek into not only the homes of your neighbors, but also a glimpse of what is next for our community. New builds, remodels and modern living on the prairie, The Bismarck/ Mandan/Lincoln community is doing it all. The Home Edition is one of our favorite issues; read ahead and see how the modern farmhouse meets Cape Cod, and how these young new builders are making a splash in a cookie cutter market, or how new technology is playing a huge role in the classic features.

BRIDGET'S ROOM MODERN RUSTIC MEETS CAPE COD B Y M A D A LY N L A S K E | P H O T O S B Y G L A S S E R I M A G E S

Walking into a room, the average person sees the space as it exists in the moment. But imagine entering that same room and being able to see the creative future and a one of a kind home that is waiting to be designed. Every time Bridget steps into a new space, her imagination ignites. Bridget has turned this superpower into a successful, complete, custom interior design company, Bridget’s Room.

Bridget’s Room began in 2002 primarily as a painting and decorating service. Since then it has grown into the business it is today. Bridget fundamentally believes that a home should reflect the style and personality of the homeowner. “I like to take the bones and build in,” Bridget said. “When they come to me and say, ‘Bridget, I don’t like my space.’ Really it starts with the foundation and builds in, just like with our own personal self. It starts with what’s inside and builds out. So for my inspiration, I could walk into any house to talk to a client and, form that conversation, I am able to bring out their personality.” Getting to know her clients’ unique taste and energy is crucial in order to cater to their personal aesthetic preference. Therefore, Bridget is very hands-on throughout the entire design process.

before

“My goal in meeting with them is to see their vision and stretch them a little bit out of their comfort zone so at the end they feel like they’ve gotten more than what they expected,” Bridget said. “Because if I just give them what they asked for, they’re satisfied but they’re not overly like, ‘Wow! I can’t believe what happened!’ So that’s what my goal is. I listen to you and see what you’re looking for and then I try to take that to another level.” That goal became reality while working with local homeowners to re-design the entire interior of their home.

BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

15

“Bridget has done some past work for us and we’ve worked well together,” the homeowner said. “My husband and I had different styles of décor that we liked and she was really good at combining both of our ideas to fit the house style and what we like.” While one homeowner liked a more rustic look, and the other strived for a coastal “Cape Cod” feel, Bridget went to work to find a compromise. “How Cape Cod could fit into a North Dakota setting in an established neighborhood required us to tie in elements to bridge the gap.,” Bridget said. “For example, with (his) rustic and (her) Cape Cod they were really on opposite ends of the spectrum but if we bring in elements slowly like a barn door, but more of a modern barn door.” Sometimes the idea for design compromise isn’t as easy for other homeowners. Although rare, Bridget may need to disagree with a client’s vision.

16

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2017

“There are times I say ‘no,’ but in the best way possible,” Bridget said. “They grab things here, there, everywhere. But then when we put them all together, they don’t love the all together. So a lot of times when that happens I tell them, 'Remember, look at it as a full picture.' So that’s when I try to stretch them. Because your vision is here, but together it can be so much more.” Bridget uses her passion for design as her haven from chaos.

before

“I describe my mind as a mad scientist,” Bridget said. “I’ve been up since three this morning. Most of the time I’m up that early it’s quiet in the house and my mind just goes.” Her open, creative mind is great news for future clients. She uses her time to sift through the countless options that may seem overwhelming to a homeowner and brings them a few she knows they will like. “But I kind of like chaos,” she said. “So I have to use my energy somewhere. I like to visit with them and then from there, kind of talking and kind of reading their mind to get the best idea about how we move forward. Mostly, I feel like once I’ve worked with a client we just build and it comes really easy.” Once Bridget is done, the average person can walk back into that same space and can see that the idea in her mind has become reality and an average room has become a home. “It just comes to me,” Bridget said. “I can just walk in and see it.”

HAWKTREE HAVEN C L A S S I C A L LY M O D E R N BY BAILEY HAUF | PHOTOS BY GL ASSER IMAGES

Real estate is an investment that many people make. From flipping houses to building and selling, it is an opportunity to create beautiful homes and make a profit. Bismarck locals Lonnie and DeAnn Barth intended for the house they built on Hawktree Golf Course to be just that, an investment. But, as they began the building process, it turned into much more than they ever expected.

Sitting atop two lots on Hawktree, the home that the Barth’s designed has character unlike any other with amenities inside and out. Throughout the building process multiple revisions were made to create something that would stand out. DeAnn stated, “It just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And now we are here ‘til we die.” Rather than the investment that they had initially planned for the house to be, it turned into a dream home with unique and gorgeous features. The house includes a pool and pool house, a home theater room, and a number of design features that add to its character–such as vaulted ceilings and hidden TVs. Many of the jaw-dropping aspects of the Barth’s home were not a part of the original plan. “The theater room was just going to be a storm room, so we enlarged it and pushed outside the garage to make it even bigger,” Lonnie said.

Photo courtesy of North Dakota Parks and Recreation

22 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2017

Although home amenities such as theaters and pools can be fairly common, the Barths included aspects into their design and small features throughout the house that make it even more of a standout home. “I didn’t want to have a big house that was blah,” Lonnie said. “[One feature] we added was a laundry facility on each floor, one in the master and one in the girls’ room and the boys' room downstairs.”

BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

23

Having a washer and dryer on each floor was one of a number of ideas that Lonnie had which DeAnn was leery of at the start. Along with other features such as a large stone fireplace and a hidden, drop down TV in the bathroom, some of the unique visions Lonnie had for the home DeAnn came to love later on. In fact, there was one she found out about from someone else while out on the town. “We were at a restaurant and my husband was talking to someone who was working on the house. He had told his wife about this awesome bathroom that has a TV in it. I was like ‘what TV?’" DeAnn said. “It took me a while to find it later.”

24 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2017

Inspiration for many of the design elements within the home came from the couple themselves as well as from pictures they flipped through of other homes. Even though the Barths had help from a number of reputable businesses around town that helped them to create their vision, DeAnn is aware of how many little details they were forced to make decisions about. “You don’t have to think of most of this stuff when you have someone build it for you.” One important design inspiration for the house is a large statue of an iconic comic book and movie character: Thor. He is housed inside an inlet in the movie theater room, but as DeAnn points out the statue is placed somewhat haphazardly. “We built the house around the statue and then he was too tall!” Despite Thor’s precarious placement, the house that the Barths' built as a mere investment opportunity turned into a breathtaking place for the couple and their family to call home.

Epic Homes for a Unique City

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | MAY-JUNE 2017

EPIC HOMES FOR A UNIQUE CITY BY MARLEE SEIBOLD | PHOTOS BY GLASSER IMAGES

Experience. Professionalism. Innovation. Customization. These are the four characteristics that makes Epic Homes stand out from the crowd. Starting in 2011, founder Parker Pladson began building homes with his brother-in-law in Dickinson, North Dakota. With this experience, Pladson decided to branch off and expand his business in 2013 to the BismarckMandan area, focusing more on the customization and creative processes that come with home building. After working solo for a couple of years, taking on a bigger market was the next step. With that, he brought on partner, Tom Seifert.

BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

29

“We talked a lot about growth of the company and Tom fit the mold I was looking for when it came to marketing and sales,” said Pladson, noting their decision could be both professionally and personally beneficial. “We love talking about business and guystuff in general–our faith and all the important stuff in life–we’ve always had that kind of friendship,” Seifert stated. Pladson had met the third member of the team, Taylor Belk, a few years earlier. When they had both beenbuilding in Dickinson they'd talked about joining forces when the time was right according to Pladson. By 2013, Belk was working in Fargo, but the two had stayed in contact over the years. “Once the opportunity came to join Parker with Epic Homesand branch out into the Fargo-Moorhead area, it made sense to come together,” said Belk.

30

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2017

This is the first year Epic Homes has reached to the Dickinson, Bismarck and Fargo areas. With the expansion, the company has built more than fifty homes in the Bismarck-Mandan area. They credit their success to the qualities they possess as a company and as a team. "One of our main differences is that we are young, and aren’t afraid to try something new! Especially, if it’s a better way to do things,” said Pladson.

BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

31

“We are not afraid of change. We appreciate technology, and how much it can help us. We try to utilize it the best way we can,” stated Belk. “We will do any style or mix of styles a client wants. By utilizing an architect on each project, clients get an efficient use of space inside and the look and feel they want on the outside of their home. What sets us apart is our ability to draw from scratch, something that meets our clients’ individual needs,” said Seifert. “We also provide an interior designer to help clients coordinate selections,” Belk added. Through this process the Epic Homes team is confident they can turn their clients’ dreams into reality.

32

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2017

They want to make sure the clients get the end product they envisioned. Their unique process allows them to offer their clients input from start to finish. “What makes us different is we can draw something up from scratch and mix styles outside and inside. You may like one style inside, but something completely different on the outside. Clients can bring us pictures and we will customize the house to fit those wants,” said Belk. “We want to make home building less stressful, so we are going to have fun, cracks jokes, and laugh the entire time,” said Pladson. Belk adds, "A goal we have is for anyone who builds with us to leave the entire process with a great experience. We want them to be able to tell someone that it was fun and enjoyable to build their home.” The bottom line is, these three fun guys who are at the helm of Epic Homes want their clients to enjoy the process as much as they enjoy their final product. Their ability to work together seamlessly to create homes that meet the quality and professionalism in home building is what makes them work as a team. They hope to expand their building ventures, but never get away from what they know and love. They'll keep building custom homes for their clients to love. BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

Custom headboards and desks have been assembled by the guys and finished by the ladies.. LINCOLN

look how far we've come story: Karen Daly | photos: Lincoln Archives

1973 The city of Lincoln, North Dakota might be small, but it has a community force behind it like no other. Karen Daly has been the cheerleader for Lincoln before it was even incorporated as a city. Read ahead as she tells you how far they have come in the past 40 years. Welcome to the city of Lincoln. We have lived here for 44 years. This year on July 15 we are celebrating our 40th Anniversary as an incorporated city.

CONNECT WITH US IN BISMARCKMANDAN 1973

AARP is making it easy to connect with others and create a lasting impact on our community. From fun, free events like Movies for Grownups, to educational lunches and volunteer opportunities, we’re bringing out the best of Bismarck-Mandan. Help us make our area an even better place to live, work and play for people of all ages. Get to know us at aarp.org/bismarck

HISTORY Lincoln began in the spring of 1973 as a low-cost housing development known as Fort Lincoln Estates. A co-op was formed and was given a loan to build a water treatment plant to filter the iron-rich water. The first summer 24 homes were built and we were a close little community. Almost all of the families were young and knew each other. It seems we always had a yard full of kids playing one game or another. If the yard wasn't big enough, the game spilled over to the street.

BECOMING A CITY On July 12, 1977, the residents voted to become a city. We established ordinances and gained revenue sources other than the water bills on which we'd depended. We have since built city administration building, welcomed water service from Bismarck and have a need to expand our public works building. Lincoln has grown steadily through the years and still is a city full of young families with about 3,600 residents. In 2014, an elementary school was built which was nearly full on day one. Last summer, two additional classrooms were added. Today the school has nearly 600 students.

PARKS Our three city parks are in the development stage. Our oldest and most developed is Lincoln park. It has a softball field, soccer and an indoor shelter complete with a kitchen. Summer activities for youth are popular. Reservations are accepted for the shelter in Lincoln Park and for the gazebo in another of our three outdoor community spaces, Millennium Park.

BUSINESS & PLEASURE Our business district has an exercise gym, a chiropractor and a hair salon. Another strip mall is planned for 2018. Two bars serve drinks and great food, and also offer rooms for receptions or other gatherings. The "South 40" is known for its weddings and receptions. In addition to the businesses, homes are still being built.
