DESIGNER

Hello readers! You may have seen my face in the magazine before. My name is Jenna Kluting and as the creative of the team, I decided to challenge myself a bit this issue and write the letter from the publishers designer. A little bit about me: I've been designing Bismarck Magazine's layout since the very first issue in 2016 and I absolutely love what I do! I've been dabbling in design since I was very, very young and Quark was still top-of-the-line (the OG designers will know exactly what I'm talking about). I'm also a photographer and occasionally you'll see photos taken by yours truly throughout the magazine. I have a deep appreciation for creatives of all kinds. Musicians, painters, designers, chefs - our community is filled to the brim with wonderful, artistic humans, and it's a more beautiful community because of just that. Everywhere you look, you can see something that a creative has touched. From billboards and magazines to what you hear on the radio, to the food on your plate. I may be biased, but I truly believe that artists keep the world spinning in a breathtaking way, and we're all lucky enough to see some of that incredible art in our own small town, growing city. We've had the pleasure of meeting with a handful of these creatives in the Bismarck, Mandan, Lincoln community to hear their stories and find what truly inspires them. As you read about each artist, think of all the people that work so hard to make our community so much fun to look at. And remember to always support local art!

Susan Lundberg and Stephanie Delmore Sleepy Hollow Theater Sleepy Hollow Theatre & Arts Park began providing artistic opportunities to youth and audiences in the BismarckMandan community in 1990. Students, teachers, orchestra members, volunteers and so many other join together each summer to bring the stage to life. Stephanie on 30 years into Sleepy Hollow: It feels amazing and surprising, both things but as one friend said did you ever think of giving up? And of course not. You were just going to move forward in life and here we are 30 years later. It happens if you stay the path. Susan on Sleepy Hollow’s start: We were on a road trip and Dad

asked if we had time and a degree of money what would you want to do. You know you think the sky’s the limit and I said I’d travel to who knows where. Then he asked what if we didn’t have money, what would we do. I thought well what could we do in Bismarck? So, we just shook it down and when we hit town again we got some good community minded people and said we’re thinking of this and they wanted to have community meetings to see if other people agreed and they did and we just went off, we were gone. Stephanie on defining perseverance: We never felt being women harmed you in anyway if you had grit to do what you wanted to do. So, it’s kind of pioneering. It’s fun and when

the kids are happy that’s all that matters. We say whenever you’re having fun, you’re teaching work ethic, teaching cooperation, teaching critical thinking. Stephanie on 'as long as the kids are happy': It’s been ideal because it’s always been for the right reasons. It’s been about how many more can we serve, how can we get better sound, can we do that. In the beginning years, we had sound and tech problems. Our tech person would come back and say I had this problem and I said the kids are all happy. Yes, it’s frustrating for an audience but we’re still doing what we’re supposed to and no one’s not trying. Technologically things were not as great, and we learned from it.

Susan on working with your BFF: You know it has been so ideal because we think the same. If you trust somebody, you can bounce ideas off each other. No one is afraid to say no let’s think of something else or yes, that is great a great idea. So, you can brainstorm together and have no bars holding you in. Bill Brien Bountiful REI's Explain the name: Rei is Bill’s wife’s middle name and Bountiful comes from his uncle who passed away from cancer. “My uncle wanted to act one more time before he passed and Bountiful was the title of the movie he wanted to make. Unfortunately, he passed before he was able to make the movie. Bountiful honors my uncle’s last wish and Rei honors my wife who also passed away from cancer,” Bills explains The art: Bill creates digital art on his phone using an art app. This started while his wife received cancer treatments. “She would have chemo for a few hours, so I’d have a few hours on my hands. Instead of just looking at social media I found an art app and started doodling. I accidently

made something that looked ok,” Bill smiles. “After that I deliberately tried to draw something, and it turned out really nice.” Giving back: Art has come full circle for Bill. He started to create while passing time during his wife’s cancer battle and to help grieve since she passed. Now, Bill gives back to the Bismarck Cancer Center to help others with their fight. Proceeds from the sale of his artwork benefit patients there. As of May 27th, 2019, Bill has donated four dollars shy of $3,000. I wanted to share my wifes story because that story I don’t think it gets shared enough. About the people who accept cancer, without blaming anyone. They just take life and say okay we are

going to fight this with everything possible. My wife’s life is a testament to those people that accept what life throws at them. The art is reflective of that spirit but not just of her but everyone who has been touched by cancer.

"

I lose myself in art now, hours will go by and I realize I need to cook supper. I get lost in it and it’s a good thing, when I lose myself my fears, anxiety, and pain go away.

Jen Pedersen Bismarck Makeup and Fashion Girl Bismarck Magazine asked Jen Pedersen (Bismarck Makeup and Fashion Girl) to create an ice cream look for our cover image. The whimsical look Jen created is complete with an ice cream cone plopped on the top of our intern Maria's head so it appears like the ice cream is dripping down her face. Jen walks us through the steps to create this fun look: 1. I use a soft brown pencil, like an eyebrow pencil. Then I look at a picture and draw the lines of what I’m going to do

2. I start with the eyes and begin adding color and dimension there 3. I move to defining the brows. Brows can make or break a look so be sure to spend a little time with them 4. Next, I fill in color working my way from the top to the bottom 5. When color is finished, begin shading. I like to do the shading 6. For the neck I used a soft eyeliner to draw in the lines and I used eye shadow to shade in the wafflecone look 7. After the neck I filled in

Maria's lips 8. Add sprinkles by using real icing 9. Smooth the hair back and put the wig on 10. Finally, put the real TCBY wafflecone on her head to complete the look Even with this ice cream look, Halloween faces, traditional makeup, and so many other looks executed Jen doesn't find herself creative. Start by changing the way you talk to yourself. Let’s take the summer season for example. Many people will set out to lose weight for the summer. In fact, you feel like you almost have to with all the ‘summer challenges’ and ‘get your beach body’ promotions in magazines and all over social media. But what would happen if you told yourself you wanted to tackle a new challenge - like completing a 5K or walking every evening after dinner or being able to bike with your kids - instead of telling yourself you need to lose weight? Committing to that new challenge and then the pride of meeting a new goal will motivate you and help you develop new habits. Those new habits also help you manage your weight & stay healthy. (Get

Foodstuff with Medora Sletten

I

am very single. Or as I like to say, single and ready to feel uncomfortable around anyone I find attractive. But I have yet to meet a pasta that made me nervous. Which is why I took this carbloaded journey of pairing something uncomfortable, like a first date, with something all too comfortable, like a warm and savory pasta. In one week I shared five local pasta entrées with five real first dates.

Ponder this with me. All noodles are pasta but not all pasta is noodles. Right? I know there is probably a real answer to this, and a quick way to find it, but sometimes it’s charming not to have an answer. Experience has taught me that it’s more fun to sit and craft an answer with someone over a shared meal than it is to ask Google. Google doesn’t make me laugh as much as I would like my mate to. As always, let this be your encouragement to break bread with others more often. Do you have someone you have wanted to spend time with but are too nervous to ask? Know that you have me in your corner. You don’t need a sign when the pasta is calling. But throw-in a salad every now and then. Lucky for me, whatever weight I gained from constant carb intake, I 58 Photos by Glasser Images

lost in nervous-sweat.

For the purpose of this food review, I went out to eat with a mix of men who spanned many careers, ages, and interests. I knew two from around town and asked them out on my own, two of them I was set-up with by friends, and one I met on a dating app. Our locations also spanned old time classics, new hot-spots, and one-of-akind establishments. To really spice things up, I had my dates order the same meal as me so that we could properly experience the same tastes and provide you with the best feedback. Now that I have doubled the amount of first dates I have been on in my life, I think I have earned the right to give a little dating advice.

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JULY-AUGUST 2019

Mainly, don’t go out to eat with five guys in one week. I am very tired and I would like to take a nap. *Last names have been changed for privacy. Stonehome + Ryan Reynolds = North Dakota proud Before I say anything, Ryan Reynolds and I would like to thank our friends at Stonehome for the wonderful service and

enthusiasm. Ryan Reynolds and I were just two Dakota kids kicking back, talking about all things Bismarck/Mandan, and eating more carbs than anyone should in one sitting. We started the night with Jalapeno Mac Bites and ended the night with Gorgonzola Pasta. Ryan Reynolds is everything you would expect from a gentleman. Respectful, genuine, and confident. This was a fun and refreshing date with endless conversation which paired well with the Gorgonzola. Unlike many pasta entrées, each bite was different, which kept the taste buds interested. If you, my dear reader, and I ever find ourselves at Stonehome together, you can guarantee I will be ordering a round of Mac Bites for the table. Bistro + Sidney Crosby = Always double check the restaurant's hours of operation When I asked my friends who I should go out with, they all said Sidney Crosby. And when I asked them where I should eat pasta, they all said Bistro. And you know what? Neither one disappointed. The conversation flowed as smooth as the sauce. The Bistro’s Tortellini is a fantastic first date entrée. It’s not messy, it’s easy to eat, and it’s delicious. Sidney Crosby and I also got to go on a bonus date because, friendly reminder, Bistro is not open on Mondays. Anima Cucina + Derek Jeter = Delightfully refreshing My date with Derek Jeter was

very “Bismarck 2019.” We met on a dating app, ate gluten free, vegan pasta, and had a great time dining at the newest restaurant in town. Although we didn’t know each other before the date, on the way we ran into a fun group of mutual friends. No matter how much Bismarck grows, it’s still a big small town. The pasta…you have to try it! The Primavera was so full of fresh veggies that you won't miss the meat! Humpback Sally’s + Jared Leto = Yes!

Grill provides many top-notch activities: darts, karaoke, pulltabs, pool, and bingo – you can play bingo there every night of the week! To top it off, the Chicken Alfredo will take you back to simpler times. Jared Goff was everything you would hope for in a date with loose plans. Open-minded, light-hearted and simply jovial. Sometimes the best nights come from the most unexpected turns. So, who gets the final rose? This episode is to be continued. There may even be room for a plot twist.

This date was a great reminder that sometimes it’s fun to just say “yes!” Go out with someone you don't know anything about? Why not!? (We have mutual friends so I knew he was safe.) Order both pastas on the menu? Let’s do it! Humpback Sally’s Cowboy Mac is the most comforting of all of the featured pastas. Rich and creamy cheese like you had as a kid, and topped with bacon for a touch of flare. Right when you don’t think you can eat two pastas at once, you try the Shrimp Fettuccine and all is right in the world. Jared Leto and I had a wonderful meal discovering our common interests. Blackstone Grill + Jared Goff = A fun ending to so many calories The true test of a relationship, deciding where to eat. After two failed attempts to find a new pasta, Jared Goff and I saddled up to the wonderfully unforgettable hidden gem that is Blackstone Grill. Blackstone BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM
