Happy Birthday Bismarck Magazine! It’s year two of official publishing. Over the past two years we have grown our team from three to nine, added a special Bridal Edition, as well as a second magazine, River + Ranch. We love being a part of this community and are excited to continue highlighting the incredible people and events in Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln. The March/April edition is full of crazy cool things in the community, and believe it or not, we are getting techy! We all remember the times of dialup internet or corded telephones, right? We often forget about those days because technology has advanced immensely over the past decade. Now, we have the internet at our finger tips, drones delivering our packages and autonomous cars, oh and let's not under-rate Google. What would we do without Google? As a small town, growing city, we don't often categorize Bismarck/Mandan/Lincoln as a “techy” community, but that could not be farther from the truth. This community is lucky to have some incredibly tech savvy people. People like Justin Walsh and Garrett Moon, founders of CoSchedule, who have clients all over the world and agencies such as Agency Mabu that are taking new technology and bringing it into the community to change the way we market. Read ahead to see how technology is changing the world and our community and how the talent behind this technology is CHOOSING to live and stay in Bismarck, ND. For our 2nd anniversary, we’ve decided to give our readers a fun present. First, download the “layer” app off Google Play or the App Store on your cell phone. Once you've downloaded the app all you have to do is open the app and hover your phone above our cover. Wow...it comes to life!? This is called Augmented Reality and it is changing the world as we know it. Turn the page to learn all about how Agency Mabu is helping Bismarck Magazine bring print to life!

DRONE TECHNOLOGY

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | MARCH-APRIL 2018

Glasser Images

Glasser Images began with the click of a camera 13 years ago. In that time, numerous technologies have been invented, refined, and modernized. This has provided us with an excitement to not only learn and reinvigorate our passions, but to reinvigorate our business and the ways in which we can continually build upon and modernize the services we are able to offer our clients. After obtaining Commercial Remote Pilot Certification from the FAA for our staff, drone photography Jack Glasser Photos: Glasser Images

and videography have provided us with yet another incredible opportunity to grow and expand into a new market. Drone videography, in particular, helps us to captivate and fully immerse viewers into our videos. Modern drones are incredibly small, lightweight, and are able to shoot at heights of up to 400 feet, providing expansive views and smooth, cinematic footage. Whether providing our wedding clients with amazing aerial views of their wedding venue, taking in the beauty of the mountains in scenic Colorado, or capturing a birds-eye view of a commercial project in Downtown Bismarck, North Dakota, drones have changed the industry for the better.

Drones have become a vital marketing tool for master developments and largescale commercial real estate projects alike. I mean, as short as 5 years ago, if you wanted any sort of aerial imagery, you would have to hire a helicopter photographer for the images that are now so easily achieved in this day and age. With the technology of drones, we now get better quality images, the exact right angle, the exact right distance away, and the potential for cinematography and video Taylor Daniel

editing help to market a property like never before. Daniel Companies strives and succeeds at being locally, regionally, and nationally recognized for top quality production, service, marketing, and knowledge. We will continue this by implementing drone technology to our marketing plan for large-scale projects. Drone technology helps tremendously for projects that are in the construction phase or even before the ground-breaking has taken place to be able to outline where the development will lie, what it will look like, and what kind of space opportunities will be available. The commercial real estate industry is hyper-changing, if you don’t lead or stay on top of technology and marketing trends, you will die in this industry.

You hear a lot about Drones in the news. Uses vary from the security of our country to hobbyists flying them for fun. But have you really thought about what drones could do for us in the future? How will drones improve your life? Here are a few answers to those questions: 1. Drones will fetch many of the items we need. 45% of the time we spend in our vehicles is to get things like bread, drop shipping at the post office or picking up a Marlo Anderson

prescription. Drones can do these things in turn saving us time and money. 2. Home care. Drones with attached robotic arms will trim our trees, repair our roofs and even hang lights on our homes for the holidays. 3. Security. Imagine a burglar trying to break into your home and noticing a drone overhead filming everything, calling the police and then telling the perpetrator that law enforcement is en route. These are just a few uses for drones in the future. In the next decade, we could come to rely on drones as much as we rely on our vehicles today.

<TITLE> DOWNTOWN TECH </TITLE> JAMIE: Ed and I are super techies, we love to further define the creative experience. But I am also a print guy and wanted to help merge the technology side to print. We are really interested in trying new things and we were at a conference and saw that AR was being used all across the world. Looking at new technology we wanted to see how we could push the limits and add new dimensions for our advertisers in a print experience. Merging print and animation together was so exciting. BM: How is AR going to affect the Bismarck/ Mandan/Lincoln Community? JAMIE: It goes back to the first question, AR is going to change how we perceive things and how consumers become engaged. AR is going to make print, specifically, more than just something that you pick up, read, and throw away; it is now a much more in-depth experience, as well as, archival. Bringing technology and print together is going to help people retain the information more and elevate the experience. It opens up our whole city to possibilities. Take for example our museums, state parks or historic sites. Plaques or tours now have the opportunity to come to life in a much more real way, simply by using your phone. AR is a real thing that people all across the world are already using, now we can help bring this technology to Bismarck and create a whole new experience for our community.

Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln are home to about 100,000 people. Every one of those 100,000 has a reason why they choose to live here. Some were born and raised here, some moved away and came back and some are transplants from other parts of the country or even world. Each person has a unique story about why they chose to stay here. One thing all 100,000 of us have in common is that we live, work and play in this small town, growing city.

In 1927 the Lasken Apartments were erected to the east of the corner store. Leasing started in 1928, completing the Lasken Block. At the same time tenants moved into the apartments, a bar was opened at street level, and Classic Barber Shop in the lower level. The Ritz Bar followed and remained in business until the mid 1950’s.

Future: The building provides unique space in the basement (half was under the original part of the building, and half is part of the Lasken Apartments) that Kenny and Kendra would like to make into a large private-dining space, complete with a wine cellar that guests will be able to rent out. The entrance to this space will be the stairs that everyone has walked past on Main Avenue.

The apartment was occupied until a few months ago. The Howards know this portion of the restaurant will take some time to develop but ultimately would like to have it open within a year of Anima Cucina.

Where

Plastic Surgery begins with

listening

When patients see Dr. Steven Yearsley, the first thing they will notice is how carefully he listens to them. From the moment a patient contacts Dr. Yearsley, whether it’s through his “Ask Dr. Yearsley” feature on the Mid Dakota Clinic website or whether it’s during a consultation in his office, it is clear how important the patient’s interests, goals and concerns are to him. And it doesn’t stop there. “We want to make sure that we’ve brought people from the beginning to the end,” Yearsley says. “We are their advocates. It’s not just seeing them in the office, doing the operation and saying ‘thank you very much.’ There’s none of that here.” Dr. Yearsley is a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He joined Mid Dakota Clinic in 2008 after spending 10 years in the southwestern United States. “We were looking for a family-friendly place to raise our seven children, and I was looking

48

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | MARCH-APRIL 2018

for a clinic where values were important and the atmosphere among surgeons and medical professionals was great.” he says. “All of the things we looked into turned out to be true here.” From the hair on their heads to the toes on their feet, Dr. Yearsley offers solutions for all kinds of problems for every type of patient, from the pediatric to the geriatric population. “Plastic surgery has become more common,” Yearsley says. “It doesn’t have to be a deformity; it can simply be a confidence builder – an improvement.” Dr. Yearsley is pleased to say that he’s seen many people whose lives have changed for the better after plastic surgery. “It’s not a matter of being vain; they just want to be the best they can be,” he says. “If you’ve got some area of your body that’s bothering you, that’s limiting you in your social interactions, and this helps you in some small way to improve that part of your life, I say, why not? Why not do that?” Sponsored by Mid Dakota Clinic

With communication being key in the decision process, he encourages patients to come in and talk to him. “If they want to achieve something, I will help them through the process,” he says. “We’ll lay it all out, so they know they’re in the right place. If it’s the right thing to do, I will tell them. If it’s not the right thing to do, I will tell them that, too.” Dr. Yearsley provides a full range of surgical services and has also developed a following as a “fixer” of complex cosmetic surgery problems with patient referrals from across the country. He cites examples that range from repairing breast implants that have deteriorated with a procedure that he was one of the first to do, to a complex facial reconstruction of a gunshot victim that turned her life around. Advancements in plastic surgery have changed the field, and Dr. Yearsley is on the cutting edge. He is in the three percent of surgeons who are doing breast reconstruction using fat transfers. “You simply take fat from one area of the body and move it to another area,” he says. “When everything’s said and done, you have used the patient’s own skin and fat to recreate a natural breast. I think this will

increase at a pretty brisk rate. We’ve got to get more insurance companies to back patients on that reconstructive effort.” Endoscopic procedures, particularly hand surgery, have also seen significant progress. “Endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery is really a slick method,” he says. “We get patients back to work sooner, and they don’t have the longer incision on the palm. We just close it with a drop of glue on the wrist. That’s how I’d have it done.” Dr. Yearsley says he enjoys every aspect of his practice and helping patients reach their goals. “Whether it’s reconstructive or cosmetic, I feel it is all meaningful work,” he says. “Patients who have gone through this process have come through something important and special, and I find it very rewarding that they have placed their trust in us on their journey.”
