LETTER

The depth of impact the last few months have been unexpected. This time will go down in history and is one that is forcing us all to find the silver lining in each day. It’s a tragedy the lives lost, the incredible suffering and the fear of the unknown future. Let us not forget that nothing can take away our hope. In the famous words of Martin Luther King, “We can experience the latest disappointment, but never lose an infinite hope.” Although we are surrounded by the unknown and fear let us look at that silver lining; time with family, time for chats with friends that were long overdue, a world coming together to support one another, people risking their lives to save those who are losing theirs. We are coming together as #aworldofhearts to support one another. Bismarck Magazine is humbled each and every year when this issue is put together. 2020 is our third year of partnering with the Bismarck Larks and Bismarck Scheels to highlight our community’s Hidden Hometown Heroes. Every year we ask YOU, the community, to nominate those around us that go above and beyond their normal neighborly duties. This year has had a rocky start, but has brought out some of our BEST. Read ahead and hear the story of how a local Bismarck mom created a global platform of support, or how our mail carriers go above and beyond to make our days a little brighter. From all of us at Bismarck Magazine, THANK YOU HEROES, without you our community would not be the same!

WHO: Mandy Gill WHAT: #AWorldOfHearts WHY: Mandy Gill’s way of sharing love amid the coronavirus pandemic and the unprecedented time of social distancing has taken the internet by storm. The social media movement #aworldofhearts was started by the Bismarck native. The idea came to Mandy on Friday, March 20th while on Facebook. There she saw a post from someone in Canada who was making and sharing hearts from her windows on the page Hearts of PG. Thinking it would be a fun way to pass the time with her little girls, Mandy created a Facebook page of her own and invited some friends and family to participate. At the time she went to bed, there were eight people in her group. When she got up the next morning, there were 1,300. And it continued to grow from there. Requests started coming in from all over the state, and by that evening, from all over the world. Creating an internet movement was not Mandy’s intention. “I had no idea. I seriously thought no one else was going to do it,” Mandy said. The posts under the hashtag #aworldofhearts share love and joy through images of hearts decorating people’s windows. These cheerful posts have brightened up newsfeeds, hiding negative posts. The Bismarck capitol building was lit up with a heart in honor of this movement and various news outlets, including CNN, have picked up the story. Governor Doug Burgum recognized the movement in his press conferences giving his support and thanks for the positivity it has spread. “It’s something bigger than me,” Mandy said. “One of my friends said it was like a God nudge, and I truly believe that. I think there’s something bigger coming from this, and it’s not just me putting paper hearts on my windows. Who knows if it’ll be a non-profit someday? I don’t know, we’ll have to see.” At the time this article was written, Mandy’s Facebook group had almost 500,000 members. Want More? If you want to be a part of the Facebook group search #aworldofhearts. You can also simply include the hashtag #aworldofhearts when posting your own photos.

WHO: Jim Barnhardt WHAT: The Banquet and Adopt-a-Block Food Truck WHY: With an ever-cheerful attitude and heart made for service, Jim Barnhardt continues to make a positive difference for the low-income and marginalized citizens of the Bismarck-Mandan community. Jim serves as the board chairman for The Banquet where meals are offered four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, The Banquet is continuing to serve meals; however, they have shifted over to serving to-go meals only. Jim has been instrumental in starting a Dream Center in Bismarck. “The idea is to take those low-income people to a little bit better place in life,” explained Jim. A Dream Center was approved for Bismarck in May 2019, and by the next month, the ball was rolling. The AdoptA-Block Food Truck program was implemented, a crucial part of the Dream Center. Jim collects grocery donations from Cash Wise, Dan’s, Natural Grocers, and Great Plains Food Bank, drives the truck to a designated area five days a week, and distributes the groceries along with a team of volunteers. The Adopt-A-Block Truck gives those in need healthy options when selecting their groceries, a luxury many do not often have. The truck also houses a Needs Nook with donated diapers and feminine hygiene products. The eventual plan is for The Banquet to become the hub of the Dream Center, which will also house other entities that want to offer free services to the community. The Adopt-A-Block Food Truck will continue to fill whatever the needs of the community are. Jim’s focus truly is on helping people and giving them hope for tomorrow. “I’ve always found that when I volunteer, sometimes I feel guilty about volunteering because I get more out of it than the people I serve do,” Jim said. “The way I look at volunteering is if we keep our focus on the people that we serve, everything else will take care of itself.” Want More? thebanquetnd.com @TheBanquetBismarck

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES 18

WHO: Kendall Bergrud WHAT: Lincoln Elementary WHY: All teachers are heroes, not just now in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, but all year round. Throughout the year, teachers work tirelessly to educate and love their students. Kendall Bergrud, who teaches fifth grade at Lincoln Elementary, is one of these heroic teachers. “I wouldn’t consider myself a hero,” Kendall protested, “but just someone who found their passion and desire to make sure kids are inspired each and every day.” Teaching was something Kendall always knew he wanted to do. “Since I was little, my dream was to be a teacher. I just wanted to make a difference in the lives of kids,” Kendall explained. Now, in these chaotic times, he has become a shining example of how teachers are adapting to the challenges of distance learning. Kendall meets with his students every day on Zoom to go over their assignments, making sure each student gets a chance to speak. When the students picked up their Chromebooks from the school for online learning, each one of Kendall’s 23 students found a personal note from him encouraging them. He has also made Facebook Live videos expressing how much he misses them and telling them to be kind. When asked what he does to make each student feel special Kendall said, “I think the biggest thing is you have to have fun in the classroom. You have to be willing to go the extra mile for those kids, making sure you have time for each kiddo, even if it’s two seconds of ‘hey good job’ or ‘way to go.’ I just want to make sure each of those 23 kiddos this year has that special moment with Mr. Bergrud.” The kids at Lincoln Elementary are truly blessed to have a teacher like Kendall in their lives. HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES 20

WHO: Greg Carr WHAT: Head Chaplain of Crisis Care Chaplaincy WHY: Crisis Care Chaplaincy is composed of thirteen volunteer chaplains and one head chaplain, Greg Carr. These chaplains have the remarkable job of helping care for the emotional and spiritual needs of Bismarck/Mandan’s first responders, law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, correctional officers, and inmates. Greg, our Hidden Hometown Hero, trains the volunteer chaplains and coordinates between them and the departments they serve. He connects the chaplains to a department to serve and checks in with the many departments they help to see if the department’s needs are being met. Additionally, Greg oversees raising funds for the Crisis Care Chaplaincy. Essential to Greg’s job is his time spent at the jail with the inmates and correctional officers. Greg cares for those he serves like family and has made a lasting impact on their lives. Ever humble, Greg wanted it to be clear that all the credit should not go to him: “I was nominated for this, but I am not the backbone of the chaplaincy. The backbone is our thirteen volunteers.” Greg and these thirteen volunteer chaplains build relationships with the people in their departments, so when they need to, they can call their chaplain for help or support. When asked how he has impacted the lives of those he serves, Greg responded, “Honestly, you’d have to ask them how I’ve impacted their lives. We have officers or first responders who will tell us thank you a lot. One of the highest compliments we got was from one of the deputy chiefs of the police department who said this was really helpful to his people. That is rewarding to know that we can help them be emotionally and spiritually well. When we can see officers or firefighters return to work and function well at their job because they spent some time talking to us and getting to know us, that’s compensation right there.” Want More? @BIS.MANChaplainsND

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES

WHO: Marvin Sadowski WHAT: United States Postal Service WHY: The unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service reads, Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. “Now you just add COVID to it,” quipped Marvin Sadowsky. Marvin Sadowsky has been a mail carrier for 25 years and has handled city route six through downtown Bismarck for approximately seven years. Marvin’s ever cheerful attitude and positivity make him a favorite among the people and businesses he serves. “I just love people,” Marvin explained. “I try to stay with the glass halffull attitude. Plus, my people are the ones who lift me up too. When I walk into some businesses and offices, and they’re smiling and ask, ‘Hey Marv, how are you doing?’ that takes me up from however low I may be.” Marvin has responded with a similar attitude to the COVID-19 Pandemic, saying that keeping a positive attitude is the best way to handle it. When asked what he loves about being a mail carrier, Marvin responded, “A lot! I get to take a walk and talk to pretty ladies all day long, so I’ve got it made. And I’m a people person so I have sons, daughters, sisters, and brothers out there, and it’s just fun. I enjoy it.” The relationships formed, and the services he can provide as a mail carrier are what is most important to Marvin. “I’ve raised my hand three times in my life and made an oath. First one was when I enlisted in the service. The second one was when I re-enlisted in the service, and the third one I joined the Post Office,” said Marvin. “Those oaths and little sayings mean something to us. Our department that we work in is customer service/delivery. Well, we believe in the customer service part of it. Big time.” This belief is evident in Marvin’s actions, and the Bismarck community is undeniably better thanks to his positivity. Want More? www.usps.com

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES

WHO: Dewey Reinert WHAT: United States Postal Service WHY: This Hidden Hometown Hero was nominated by three different people all expressing how exceptional Dewey Reinert is. A mailman for 25 years, Dewey has been walking his 13-mile Highland Acres route for 13 years. “I love it because I get to be out and see people,” Dewey said, “and because I love exercising. For me it’s the perfect job.” Dewey is an exemplar of generosity and kindness. There are countless stories about him and the difference he has made. One parent mentioned how he always greets their kids by name. Another said Dewey has been invited to birthdays, barbeques, weddings, and more. But perhaps the most touching stories come from Christmastime. Dewey explained, “I’ve had a few kids over the years write to Santa Claus in the North Pole. I’ll take those letters and pretend that I am Santa Claus. I take them home, read them and then look at what the kid is requesting. I try to buy something for them, or I might have something at home from when I was a kid that’s similar to what they’re looking for. Then I’ll put it in an envelope, make it look like it came from the North Pole with the return address, and I have Santa Claus stickers and I write back to them. I tell them I hope you have a merry Christmas, and I’m giving you a gift right now, and I hope you get some of the other gifts you are requesting, but I always tell them that the most important thing is to have love for other people.” Dewey is always thinking ahead about the needs of his customers, “I always have stamps on hand, so people know they can buy from me. Or sometimes there are elderly people who forget to put a stamp on their envelope, so I’ll just add one on there myself. It’s just nice that I can make a little bit of a positive difference that way.” Dewey truly is an unsung hero of our community who is, as one person who nominated him said, “going over and beyond to not only deliver packages, but joy as well.” Want More? www.usps.com

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES

WHO: Kathy Howe WHAT: The Neighborly Lady WHY: Kathy Howe’s kindness is an example of positivity spread through countless generous acts. Through her life, Kathy has been an example of how to live a selfless life that makes our world a better place. The list of organizations Kathy Howe has volunteered for or donated to is extensive. Kathy has given countless hours to organizations, sacrificing her time, though she doesn’t see it that way. “I just like to be busy,” Kathy says. “I’m just not one to sit still.” Considering the coronavirus pandemic, Kathy has found an additional way to support her community. Inspired by a fabric face mask sent to her by her sister, Kathy began making masks and donating them to people or organizations who had a pressing need for them. “When I see something, I like to try it, and then it just blossoms from there,” Kathy explains. Kathy has also begun baking homemade buns for her neighbors and having her grandchildren set them by their doors and then ding-dong ditch, brightening their neighbor’s day during these times of social distancing. “It’s just something I enjoy doing,” Kathy explains. “I love to bake, and my husband tells me not to bake so much, so I kind of just started giving it away and that’s what I’ve been doing for years.” Kathy also keeps jars filled with candy in her car to give away to friends, her grandchildren, or anyone she feels needs their day brightened. In addition to this, Kathy also sews baby clothes and blankets to give away. “It just gives me joy,” she explains. Kathy is always up to try something new and help out anyone who needs it: “Just ask me. I’d love to help.”

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES 28

WHO: Pat Brunelle WHAT: Gateway Pharmacy WHY: Times of trouble will bring out the best and the worst in people. The current coronavirus pandemic has sharply brought this into perspective. Many in our community have stepped up, illuminating some of the best. Pat Brunelle is one of these people. Pat has worked as a pharmacist since 1992 and has worked hard over the years to provide customers with the best service possible. Now, in the midst of a crisis, Pat has more than risen to the occasion. Humbly, Pat explained how he is working to help others, “I don’t know that I go above and beyond more than any other pharmacist would, especially in this time. You are dealing with a lot of frustration on the customer’s part. A lot of customers are scared. There’s a lot unknown. So, you just maintain that relationship with the customer, and try to put them at ease. I feel pharmacists have enough knowledge to be able to reassure a patient that their medications are going to be available. We’re going to work with insurances for you, especially in this time, when people want to get early re-fills, things like that. Going above and beyond basically just means we’ll make that extra call to the insurance company, we’ll make that extra call to the doctor, and just have that reassuring tone with them.” Pat has the welfare of his customers at the forefront of his mind and he works tirelessly to keep them safe through counseling over the phone or staying on top of the news to reassure them with facts and knowledge. “I look at it as we have an opportunity. We play an important role in helping patients and helping the general public in getting through this. It’s great to be able to provide a service like that,” says Pat. HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES 30

WHO: Jana Maher aka Miss Sparkles WHAT: Bismarck Public Library WHY: Jana Maher, better known as Miss Sparkles, has been doing her own part to bring brightness to the lives of children during the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. Every weekday at 9:30 am, Jana sits down in front of a camera to livestream her story time that would normally happen eight times a week at the Bismarck Public Library. These livestreams have received an amazing response, with her videos generating views from 500 to just under 1,000. “It’s funny because I’m not a tech person whatsoever,” Jana admitted, laughing. “I don’t even have Wi-Fi in my house.” These cheerful live streams are how Jana is continuing to connect with families across the community. “What I really, really like is building those personal relationships with all the boys and girls,” Jana explained. “In story time, I try really hard to look at everybody and make eye contact with them and really make them feel like, I’m reading this book especially for you and you are important and you are loved. I think that books for me bring comfort and love, so I really hope that’s what comes through. I just feel that as a community right now we’re craving connection, so I hope that that’s something I’m bringing to these families.” The outpouring of thanks from parents has made it clear that Jana’s videos have sprinkled joy into their lives and the lives of their children. The passion Jana has for sharing stories and connecting with children through them draws crowds throughout the year. On average, 50-60 people are present for her regular story times. Sometimes, so many attend that they have to be turned away because only 100 people can fit inside the story room. “I want to make story time a fun, comforting place that families can come to,” Jana said, and she has done just that. Her kindness and charm have made the Bismarck community a more loving and joyful place. HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES 32

WHO: Todd Mitchell WHAT: iHeartMedia- KFYR 550 WHY: Many people in our community are striving to do good, probably many more than we realize. Among them is Todd Mitchell who is using his platform to help get the word out about non-profits and organizations in need who would otherwise not have a platform to speak. “It feels like we’re always hearing from the big people,” Todd says. “What about those who don’t seem to have the chance? I try to give that chance as much as I possibly can.” Todd has become known as the person to reach out to if you need a platform, but he is always keeping an eye out for people to reach out to as well. Thanks to Todd, countless organizations have been given free airtime and the crucial chance to spread awareness about their causes. Todd has been working in radio for 48 years now. “I started when I was a little embryo, I wasn’t born yet. Mom swallowed a microphone,” Todd jokes. Todd started at KFYR 550 in 1997 and is now the Senior VP of Programming for iHeartMedia in Bismarck-Mandan. Radio is a great way to spread awareness and Todd uses this opportunity to make the world a better place. “I’m just trying to help people,” Todd explains. “I think we’re all put on earth to help somehow. Some of us know how in the world we’re supposed to do that, and some don’t. I’m one of the fortunate ones that has an idea of what maybe I can do to help.” Todd not only provides a place for small organizations to have a voice, he also works to get the right people on the air to talk about important issues and to share accurate information. Often uncredited, Todd is an unsung hero of our Bismarck-Mandan community who has used his unique position to help so many others make their own difference in the world. WHO: Jason Mittlestadt WHAT: Mandan Rodeo Committee WHY: Mandan Rodeo Days is one of North Dakota’s largest events that draws people from across the country, and even from across the world. Coming up on its 141st anniversary, the Mandan Rodeo is the oldest and largest rodeo in North Dakota. “In a word, it’s tradition,” said Jason Mittlestadt. Jason Mittlestadt is the Chairman of the Mandan Rodeo Committee that puts this patriotic event on every year. The 2020 rodeo will be Jason’s final time as chairman, a position he has volunteered for for the past three years. The role of chairman is a completely volunteer position that requires planning for the entire year leading up to the rodeo. It involves coordinating with all the other volunteers on the Mandan Rodeo Committee, as well as the Mandan Progress Organization, the City of Mandan, the Mandan Parks and Recreation Department, the Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association, the PRCA/WPRA, rodeo contestants, sponsors, and attendees. Jason has faced many challenges while holding this position, but his unwavering dedication to the rodeo, exemplary attitude, and exceptional leadership qualities have all made the Mandan Rodeo thrive, which in turn has provided a quality, family-friendly event for the community. On top of sacrificing his time 365 days a year, Jason holds a full-time job as the Director of Facilities and Transportation for the Bismarck Public Schools. Needless to say, Jason is an extremely busy man who has dedicated his time and talents in order to give back to his community. Why does Jason commit so much time and energy to this event? “Rodeo has always been a passion of mine,” Jason explained. “I’ve been rodeoing ever since I could walk.” Jason also does it for the community he loves. “The Mandan and Bismarck communities are so supportive. It’s definitely not a money-making ordeal. It’s for the community,” he said. The Mandan Rodeo Days will be held this year on July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Want More? www.mandanrodeo.com

WHO: Lindsey Solberg Herbel WHAT: American Sign Language Interpreter WHY: If you’ve watched any of Governor Doug Burgum’s COVID-19 press conferences, you probably noticed Lindsey Solberg Herbel standing to the right of the governor, translating his words into sign language. Lindsey works for the Bismarck office for the North Dakota School for the Deaf, where she uses her talents to help many people. Her position in the spotlight has raised the level of awareness for the deaf community. Lindsey received the call only an hour and seven minutes before she was supposed to be on stage next to Governor Burgum for the very first COVID-19 press conference. Since that night, Lindsey has been booked to act as an interpreter for all of Governor Burgum’s press conferences. “I’m glad they’re providing a service for deaf people,” Lindsey said. “Interpreters don’t want to necessarily be in the spotlight, but we just want to make sure that we’re making information accessible for all communities.” Lindsey’s interest in learning American Sign Language started when she was young. “When I was little, my neighbors Sarah and Stephanie had a grandmother who was deaf. When we were little, my Grandma Doris babysat my brother and I for a couple years at her house, so we learned some sign language then. My mom worked with a deaf woman, so we learned some sign language from her. Then when I got into high school at Devil’s Lake, there were a lot of deaf students in our classes, so I got to know some of them. I also got to see a lot of very good educational interpreters work… It was always kind of in the back of my mind that that would be something interesting to do,” said Lindsey. When asked how she feels about being up there on stage next to Governor Burgum, interpreting for the deaf, Lindsey responded, “I’m glad I could be there and that interpreters could be included for the first time, and if anything comes of it, I hope people will start learning sign language because there are deaf members in our community, so let’s promote inclusion.” Want More? www.nad.org/resources/american-sign-language

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES

WHO: Savannah Sargent WHAT: Sanford ICU WHY: Times of hardship bring into focus the best of our community. Savannah Sargent is one of the many selfless healthcare workers who are directly combating the current coronavirus pandemic. “I think that everyone that works right now, ICU, ER, all of them, should be up doing this,” Savannah told us. “There’s such a team mentality for all of it, where you can’t have just one person taking care of them, you have to have all hands on deck and trust the people you are working with… I’ve noticed working here… people are so willing to pick up extra shifts, and come in early, and bend over backwards, and do whatever they have to, to help.” Savannah has been a nurse since 2009 and has worked in the ICU for two years. Now, she is using her talents to serve the sick in the coronavirus intensive care unit. Savannah has been brave in the face of uncertainty, and her unselfishness is inspiring. A wife and mother of four young children, she deals with the risk of exposing her loved ones to the coronavirus every day. “I have to take everything off out in the garage,” Savannah explained. “You change your clothes, leave everything in bags, and go straight to the shower. You try to limit kisses and hugs and touches and stuff with them, too. I think that’s been the hardest thing as far as home life changes.” Even before the coronavirus, Savannah put others before herself. Her passion for the people she serves is unwavering and a testament to her strength. Working in the ICU has its ups and its downs, but for Savannah, it’s the victories that keep her going, “In the ICU we don’t get to see a lot of the outcomes necessarily, the positive ones… so it’s nice when you get to see some of the success stories come back.” Want More? www.sanfordhealth.org

WHO: Lisa Bean WHAT: Paramedic WHY: The work done by healthcare workers can only be described as heroic. They care for people at their lowest, making incredible sacrifices in order to help others. Lisa Bean has been a paramedic for 24 years and an EMT for 29. To Lisa, saving lives is more than simply a job. “I don’t think of it really as a job. It’s more of a passion, and I guess it’s kind of what I was made to do,” she said. “I used to watch Rescue 911 back in the day, and I’ll never forget it. I sat up on my couch one day, and I said I know what I want to do for the rest of my life, and I joined my volunteer rescue squad. That was ’91.” Lisa is a calming presence for people in what most would describe as their waking nightmares. She does everything in her power to help every person who ends up in her ambulance and has saved countless lives. She has helped bring life into the world and delivered eight boys throughout her career. Lisa is also an incredible mentor, who teaches with patient guidance. Lisa and her fellow paramedics are on the front lines of fighting the coronavirus. In her 24 years as a paramedic, Lisa said this has been the most challenging point. “I remember Ebola and I remember having to get smallpox vaccines, but it wasn’t as intimidating as this virus is,” Lisa explained. Paramedics have the complicated job of working directly with those with symptoms of the virus, while simultaneously avoiding further transmission of the disease to themselves or others. Thankfully, Lisa and other paramedics are committed to their service and are willing to go above and beyond in their work in these hard times. Lisa says she doesn’t need the thanks. To her, just being able to make a difference is enough. “Not every day is good,” she explained, “but it’s so fulfilling knowing that you can help somebody on their worst days.”

WHO: Alison Smith WHAT: Kitty City WHY: Sometimes, certain people come along with a unique gift that must be shared. Alison Smith is one of those people. Kitty City is a branch of Triple H Miniature Horse Rescue specially aimed at caring for cats who struggle to get adopted because of behavioral issues, sickness, or disabilities. “My passion is for disabled animals,” Alison explained, “so we opened up a sanctuary for those animals. We’re trying to help the rescues or shelters in town by taking these types of animals, so they didn’t sit in the shelters for months or years.” Kitty City is also a home for adoptable cats, but many of the cats are long-term residents. With incredible love and wisdom, Alison has created a sanctuary for the cats in her care. During the summer, the cats can roam free in an enclosed area outside where they can bask in the sun and enjoy the openness of the prairie. In cold months, the cats stay in a converted mobile home where they are separated into groups who are friendly with each other, such as blind cats with other blind cats. FIV positive cats have their own separate area. A group of dedicated volunteers care daily for all the cats, cleaning, feeding, and loving them. Bismarck-Mandan has many wonderful rescues, but many are full and struggle to find room for all the animals that come their way. Alison saw a need for a place like Kitty City. “It’s like a calling for me,” Alison said. “I feel very honored and privileged that I would be at a point in my life where I can actually answer that calling.” Alison has a love for animals that comes across in the cats she cares for; even the most feral cats will usually respond to her soothing voice and touch. Thanks to Alison, many animals who would otherwise be abandoned now have a permanent, safe, and comfortable home to live in. Want More? @KittyCityMandan hhhmhr.org/the-kitty-city-story/

Millner Wealth Management Group

There Are Many Ways You Can Be a Hero Hometown heroes come in many forms. Maybe they’re a first responder. Or someone providing care at a hospital. Maybe they’re a school teacher or a youth leader at your church. Sometimes heroes are based on their chosen profession or their community involvement. Oftentimes, heroes are the ones behind the scenes, providing financial support to help make the endeavors of other heroes possible. Either way, many heroes share a common goal: To make our community a better place. When it comes to being a financial hero, there are a variety of options available.

One way is to directly donate gifts to charitable causes that are important to you. These gifts can be investments or other personal holdings of value. They can also be planned gifts, such as naming a charitable cause in your will, or a charitable remainder trust, which is designed to benefit you, your heirs, and your favorite charity.

Many heroes share a common goal: To make our community a better place.

Whether you want to make a charitable gift during your lifetime or at the end of your life, there are a variety of tools that you may consider incorporating into your financial plan that will allow you to support charitable organizations and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Your heart is in the right place. It’s important to make sure your strategy is as well. The Millner Wealth Management Group can help you determine which strategy best reflects your needs. Your charitable goals are personal. Your financial plan should be too.

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | MAY-JUNE 2020

The Mandan Rodeo Days 4th of July 5K Road Race is a long-standing tradition in Mandan, North Dakota. During these tough times we are reminded of our simple traditions, with family, friends, and the community. that are both absent and present more than ever. We are all in this together, and more than ever we support each other and the community as we navigate the uncertain future. As our families stay at home and hope for a normal summer, we can’t help but wonder when the old normal will return. No matter the outcome we should look forward to the 4th of July with high hopes that the world we once knew will return to normal. Our race team is doing the same, we are hoping that we can all be together on Main St. in Mandan on the July 4th to celebrate Mandan Rodeo Days as we have always done. It is uncertain what the coming months will bring, and our team hopes to navigate these changes to the best of our ability. One thing that will not change is the spirit and mission driving this July 4th running tradition.

This year our race partner, the Bismarck Magazine, along with the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation invite you to come join the legendary fun in historic Mandan, North Dakota on July 4th, 2020. Your participation is more important than ever to help more in the Bismarck-Mandan community. Ignite your American spirit with families and friends by participating in this one and only 5K race held on Mandan’s historic main street. The Schanandore Team

Keep it Clean (& Disinfected) Tips and Tricks according to the CDC story: Hannah Haynes | photos: supplied

If anything, these times have taught us the importance of cleaning and maintaining a healthy home. We often forget that germs can spread very easily and just because we cannot see them does not mean they are not present. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published a full guide on how to disinfect your home and the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Read ahead to see how to keep your home not just clean, but disinfected, too. Getting started it is important to know the definition of clean vs. disinfected: According to a recent article released by the CDC:

Cleaning: “refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. It does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.” Disinfecting: “refers to using chemicals, for example, EPAregistered disinfectants, to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.” During this time of COVID-19, and really any time when viruses and illnesses are high, it is important to disinfect your home to keep everyone healthy. Remembering those high-touch areas such as

tables, chairs, light switches, doorknobs, electronics, etc. and disinfecting them once a day at least is recommended. The CDC provides a list of disinfecting products that can be used to clean on their website otherwise if those products are unavailable you can always use a bleach solution by mixing 5 tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water. For the full article on cleaning and disinfecting visit: https://www.cdc. gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/preventgetting-sick/cleaning-disinfection. html Stay safe and healthy and remember to do more than clean…disinfect, too!

Foodstuff with Medora Sletten

I

recently made a heavy mistake. I logged onto the world wide web, searched for sugar, found a standard 5 lb. bag, click, click click, waited with anticipation, and a few hours later...50, yes 50, lbs of sugar showed up on my doorstep. That little “0” changes a lot! Fifty lbs...that’s two industrial size 25 pounders. After one bag gets donated and I work my way through the three recipes below, that still leaves 98 cups of sugar to be distributed. Neighbors, let’s share! Most of the cookbooks I own have been handed down from my mom and my grandma. Ok, all of the cookbooks I own have been handed down from my mom and my grandma. I am not a kitchen master by any stretch, yet, here we are, all together on another food adventure. My go-to strategy with old cookbooks is to look for the most ingredient-stained pages. You know something wonderful has happened there. Is there anything that defines “midwestern-hospitality” better than driving up to someone’s house uninvited, knocking on their door, sticking out your arms and saying, “Here, I baked this for you.” One of my favorite mysteries of the human spirit is our desire to make food for one

another in moments of great joy and deep grief. When we don’t have any words, we use our energy and love in the kitchen. We bake to say “Hi,” “I'm sorry,” and “I love you.” We bake when things go right, and we bake when things go left. As life's challenges come and go, and you find yourself knocking on your neighbor’s door with arms full of steaming bread, I offer you this thought...“There are things you do because they feel right & they may make no sense & they may make no money & it may be that the real reason we are here: to love each other & to eat each other's cooking & say it was good.” -Story People

My Mom’s Orange Rolls My grandma’s recipe (from her mother) and found in our Lutheran Church of the Cross cookbook, Recipes to Remember Us By. Aren’t church cookbooks little jewels of Midwestern culture?! These rolls say, “Here is a fancy little roll to match that fancy new promotion.” •

1⅓ cups all-purpose flour ¾ tps salt ½ tsp baking soda ¼ tsp baking powder 5⅓ tbs unsalted butter ⅔ cups sugar 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas (about 2) • *½ cup coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans *I skip the nuts and add a dash of vanilla here instead.

Have all ingredients at room temperature. Whisk together thoroughly the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder. In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar on high speed until lightened in color and texture, 2-3 minutes. Beat in flour mixture until blended and the consistency of brown sugar. Gradually beat in eggs. Fold in bananas and nuts* just until combined. Scrape the batter into a greased pan and spread evenly. Bake at 350° for 50-60 minutes with rack on lower third of oven. Let cool for 5-10 minutes in the pan before unmolding to cool completely on a rack. Yields: 1 loaf. Braided Bread - The Prairie Collection Cookbook. Printed in 1983 for the

Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. This bread says, “Thanks for having me over for dinner; I braided my hair, and my dough.” • • • • • •

4-4½ cups unbleached white flour ¼ cup oil 2 packages (4½ tsp) dry yeast 2 tbs sugar 2 cups warm water 1 tbs salt

In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour and yeast. Add warm water, oil, sugar and salt to dry mixture. Beat at

low speed with an electric mixer for ½ minute, scraping sides of bowl. Beat 3 minutes at high speed. By hand, stir in enough of the remaining flour to make moderately stiff dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic (8-10 minutes). Shape into a ball and place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease surface. Cover and let rise double in bulk. Punch down and divide dough in half. Divide each half into thirds. Shape into 6 balls. Cover; let rest 10 minutes. Roll each ball to a 16-inch rope. Line up 3 ropes, 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet. Braid very loosely, beginning in the middle. Pinch ends together; tuck under. Repeat with remaining ropes. Cover; let rise until double in bulk. Bake 375° for 30 minutes. Yields: 2 loaves. To my gluten-free friends, I promise you, I have not forgotten about you! It’s just that it’s so fun to eat glutenfull breads! Please don’t be mad at me. Love, Medora .

The bank we count on. There is a lot to consider when choosing a financial institution - such as convenience, technology, products and community involvement. We chose our bank for all these reasons. But more than anything, we wanted a bank with familiar, friendly people that we knew we could count on any time of the day. First Western Bank & Trust is all these things and so much more.
