Welcome to the official summer guide to Mandan. The Mini Mandan Summer Magazine is here to highlight all the great things happening in the community. I’ve been at the helm of the Mandan Progress Organization for about 5 months, and I have to say I have a great amount of respect for the community culture and support that surrounds all that we do as an organization. I’ve spent my entire life in Mandan, and what stands out for me and my family over the years are the memorable experiences. For 29 years the Mandan Progress Organization has led the community in creating some of the most unique and memorable experiences that have inspired and won the hearts of community folks across the generational spectrum. As I take the helm of this organization driving into the future, I can tell you with Mandan’s unlimited potential, with great community support, volunteerism, dynamic experiences, and it’s exceptionally welcoming nature, our community will shine in the coming future. So many have asked me “What is new in 2022”, and I can say that we will see

the return of our Mandan spirit through our traditional summer events such as Touch-a-Truck, Buggies-nBlues, and the long running Mandan Rodeo Days Independence Day Celebrations. In 2022 we will also see our first ever Mandan Main St. Block Party Concert as part of the Buggies-n-Blues event June 11th. The Saturday evening of Buggies-nBlues will featuring national acts on our biggest stage yet, with a celebratory feel to an event that will be entering it’s 29th year as a staple part of the Mandan experience. I'm excited for the future of Mandan, and what we as a community can do to create a city that we are all proud of. Have a safe and happy summer in Mandan.

Two Big Acts

One Mandan Block Party

The most celebrated DISCO band of our generation! If we didn't know better, we'd say that the Boogie Wonder Band, arrived via a time machine because this 10-piece band busts out funk-a-licious grooves and disco-strutting jams like they are straight out of the '70s. Channeling the era with a full throttle high-octane live show, each member dons eye-popping Las Vegas-inspired costumes and flashy personas. They don't just hail from another land; they come from another decade - where Disco ruled the dance floors!

Addilynn's Bee-lievers, a local non-profit founded in honor of Addilynn Lunstad, is excited to bring you the music of John Schneider, Cody McCarver, and the Stars N' Bars band. John Schneider, widely known for his role as Bo Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard, also has had several number one country music singles throughout his career. Cody McCarver spent over a decade with the country music group Confederate Railroad before launching his solo career. After the classic car parade John, Cody, and the Stars N' Bars take the main stage from 4pm – 8pm on Mandan’s Historic Main Street!

Addilynn's Bee-lievers Addilynn Lunstad is a sweet and spunky seven year old girl

insurance benefits, and comfort kits to children and families

who was born with a rare genetic disorder resulting from

on the pediatric floor of local hospitals.

a mutation on the CACNA1A gene. Addilynn was on track developmentally until about six months when her parents Toby and Shawn noticed she was slightly behind. At nine months, they began Early Intervention Services with her. Addilynn also began various tests to try and determine the cause of her delays. The results from the numerous tests all came back normal, and Toby and Shawn were told that a rare and undiscovered genetic mutation was likely the cause of her delays. They were advised to continue with supportive treatments for her symptoms and re-test for genetic mutations in 5-10 years.

This summer, in partnership with the Mandan Progress Organization, Dacotah Speedway, and the Hammer Down Big Rig Truck Show & Shine, Addilynn’s Bee-lievers is putting on their first event, June 10-12, in order to raise awareness of CACNA1A and money for further research. For more information be sure to check out Addilynn’s Beelievers on Facebook and Instagram and their website addilynnsbeelievers.org NewAge Creative

Unable to accept such inconclusive results, the Lunstads started a second round of testing. However, this brought them no closer to answers. A few months later, Addilynn experienced three days of uncontrollable seizures which resulted in a traumatic brain injury and forced her to start over developmentally. While hospitalized for her seizures, the Lunstads finally received a diagnosis, a CACNA1A mutation. This mutation is rare on its own, but Addilynn is the only person in the world who is known to have her specific variant. On top of this, there is no known cure. “The only thing they recommended is therapy and then we just treat what we see, so just supportive treatment, nothing that can cure or fix it,” explains Toby. Addilynn has continued to suffer from different serious symptoms of the CACNA1A genetic disorder, but she also continues to be strong and resilient. Toby and Shawn were inspired to start a non-profit called Addilynn’s Bee-lievers because of their involvement in the CACNA1A Foundation. The name for their non-profit comes from a poem Toby’s sister gave her during the first round of testing called “The Bumblebee Cannot Fly” which speaks about how bumblebees technically shouldn’t be able to fly, but do anyway. Like the bumblebee, Addilynn continues to fly despite her challenges. The mission of Addilynn’s Bee-lievers is to create awareness of CACNA1A and support organizations like the CACNA1A Foundation who are focused on finding targeted treatments

What are Mandan's True Colors? Current and former Mandan residents have a new website to enjoy, www.MandanPhotos.com, inspired by the late Rick Sharf, a longtime photographer from Mandan. Rick had over 40,000 images in his collection. Nick Ressler, also of Mandan, took it upon himself to scan all those images, upload them and then create categories on a website so people can browse those images. Growing Up In Mandan,we use to … a facebook page, administered by former Mandan Resident and Author Kevin Kremer, has a steady stream of images showing memories from the past as well as high fiving current achievements. This page has a following of 10,600+ who are active participants every day. Not bad for a town of about 20,000 people. Our football games are packed with fans. The gymnasiums are full for basketball games. You can’t find a parking spot for music events at the high school or soccer games. Then we have our community events. The local support is always phenomenal. Buggies-n-Blues, Art-in-the-Park, 4th of July Rodeo and Independence Day Parade are just a few examples of that. The residents of Mandan, ND, still feel that gathering is important. A few years back, Mandan was nominated by Rand McNally as one of the most patriotic cities in the USA! Check out the video on our website if you haven’t seen it. But what makes Mandan Patriotic?

Webster defines patriotism as “love for or devotion to one's country”. This is very evident in Mandan as we are proud of our country. Our young people sign up for military service at one of the highest rates in the country. The US Flag can be seen on almost every street in Mandan and we honor those who served at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. We also celebrate Independence Day like no other place I have ever been. In fact, I would say that Independence Day IS the most important holiday in Mandan. People choose to come here to see family on the 4th of July instead of the holidays. Fireworks fill the night skies, rodeos during the evenings, tailgating while waiting for the parade, the annual food fare at Art-in-the-Park and no sleep. It is a magical time. All of this is special because we believe in family and community. Community is why Mandan is so Patriotic. Community is why Mandan’s true colors are Red, White and Blue. Meet the Independence Day Parade Marshals “Mandan means everything to me. I was born there. I’m going to die there… It’s given me so much,” expresses Chad Berger, one of the Parade Marshals for the 2022 Mandan Rodeo Days parade. Chad and Sarah Berger were chosen to lead the annual parade this year. “It’s such a big honor… I can’t wait to see everyone and see the smiles on their faces,” says Sarah Berger. The couple is an integral part of the Mandan community, and their love for the community comes through in everything they say about and do for their hometown. Sarah and Chad Berger have lived in Mandan for their entire lives, and have known each other since they were in kindergarten. The two started dating after high school, but there was always a connection between the two of them. “I told my sister in seventh grade I was going to marry that girl someday. And we’ve been married over 40 years,” shares Chad. Together, Chad and Sarah raised three children in Mandan, sharing their love of the community with their children, who all still live in Mandan too and now have children of their own. “I don’t know anywhere else in the world where you can have a better place to raise your family,” says Chad.

Days for years, even before Chad and Sarah, by helping out, competing in events, and providing stock. Chad has continued that family tradition, starting when he was young by helping his father ranch. Now he is running two of his own ranches, one south of Mandan and one down in Oklahoma. Not only is he leading the parade, he is also once again providing stock for the rodeo. Being able to participate in one of Mandan’s oldest and proudest traditions means a lot to both Chad and Sarah who are eagerly looking forward to July 2nd-4th when Mandan will once again put on one of the region’s biggest events, continuing in a long tradition of legendary rodeoing.
