Cottingham Insurance
Cottingham Insurance, based in Underwood and Bismarck, is an insurance company that cares about more than just making it through their workday. In addition to their commitment to excellent customer service, they find ways to give back to their community year-round. “If we’re not going to give back and help people, what’s the point?” expresses co-owner Amanda Haseleu. “These communities are supporting us so we can do this, so if we’re not going to give back and do good with what we’ve built, what was the point of building it?”
Her sister and co-owner Jessica Cottingham-Hardy attributes this attitude to their parents. “It started when I was really little, talking about you give back, you give to others, you serve others,” describes Jessica. “I think it’s one of the biggest benefits to a family-owned business. When you’re little, sometimes you think it’s a negative because you might be volunteered for a bunch of events that you wanted to partake in and not work in, but now I look back and I appreciate it a lot more.” Because of this, Amanda, Jessica, and
their employees at Cottingham are always looking for tangible ways to make a difference in the communities of Underwood and Bismarck. A few of their many different contributions include sponsoring the women’s dressing room at the Bismarck Cancer Center, volunteering at the Banquet and the Soup Café, hosting blood drives, organizing food and supply drives for the Underwood Community Cupboard, and donating money to countless charities and local events.
For Christmas every year, Cottingham Insurance works closely with the Underwood Community Cupboard to do a program called Santa’s Helpers. The program encourages people to go out and shop for a specific child based on a short wish list. The wish lists can be found hanging on a dedicated Christmas tree in the Underwood Cottingham offices. People can sign out a list, fill it out, then bring their gifts back. Cottingham Insurance follows up with people, helps organize the donations, and even helps with delivering. The Santa’s Helpers program is currently overseen by the Underwood Community Cupboard,
but Cottingham Insurance has been a vital part of the program for years. “We do Santa’s Helpers because we’ve been delivering presents since I was in junior high or high school when our mom was more involved in it. When she passed away, that’s what our employees give us every year, a donation to Santa’s Helpers in Diane’s name,” explains Jessica. The program has remained special to Jessica and Amanda over their many years of doing it, and being able to fulfill kid’s Christmas wish lists never gets old. “It’s fun giving during Christmas because there’s that extra special part of it. We are excited and we are so unbelievably blessed. When you can walk into your house and your Christmas tree is up, and everyone is just happy and life is good, you want everyone to feel that,” says Amanda. If you’d like to help Cottingham Insurance with their Santa’s Helpers program, you can stop by their Underwood location or contact them a different way, more information is on their website: cottinghaminsurance.com

Bismarck Motor Company
One of the reasons Bismarck is such a great place to live is the abundance of local businesses who share the benefits of their success with the whole community. Bismarck Motor Company (BMC) is a prime example of a business with a communitycentered mission. “One of our core values is being good community citizens here at Bismarck Motor Company. It’s always at the forefront of our marketing and what we’re doing,” says Jenna Adam, Brand Marketing Manager for BMC. Mandan Store Team Lead Shaneille Ulmer adds, “We really consider ourselves a community-owned business, and we know that we can’t do what we do every day without the support of our community.” BMC expresses this gratitude in a tangible way with their charitable programs. Bismarck Motor Company makes an effort year-round to express their gratitude and share their success with the community by giving back in several different ways. BMC accepts requests from different organizations for various donations
or sponsorships. Many school sports programs and local charitable organizations have benefited from this effort. BMC also makes larger contributions such as their donation to Sanford for their NICU remodel or to the University of Mary’s women’s golf team which has helped them provide 28 scholarships to student athletes. BMC even makes a weekly charitable effort by having a $2 jeans day every Friday. “Not only is it us committing to the community, but it’s also our staff,” says Shaneille. Everyone at BMC has the opportunity to give to a charity, making a large impact in a small way. Every holiday season, the staff at BMC makes an extra effort to give back. For the last few years, BMC teamed up with the Freedom Riders to donate bikes to those in need. “The hope was to get them to kids who wouldn’t normally get something super special like their first bike at Christmas,” says Jenna. Last year, they ended up giving away close to 300 bikes.
This year, BMC is teaming up with the Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center and Mandan Public Schools to do Giving Trees which have wish lists hanging on them instead of ornaments. These lists have three or four items that a specific child wants or even just needs. A person can take a wish list, purchase the items, then bring them back to BMC who distributes it to that child. Giving back around the holidays is always extra special, and this is no different for the team at BMC. “Giving back around the holidays is really special for us,” describes Jenna. “We love doing that because it gives you all those really good feel-goods. It’s just extra special.” If you are interested in helping BMC give back this holiday season, check out their social media @ bismarckmotorcompany. You can also always stop by or call in.

Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots is a non-profit organization started in 1947 by the U.S. Marine Corp with the purpose of gifting toys to children whose parents can’t afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. These toys are brandnew and unopened to give each child the chance to receive a present that is truly their own. Since its founding, the organization has distributed over 652 million toys to over 291 million children. Last year was Toys for Tots biggest year ever with over 24.4 million toys gifted to over 9.9 million children with the help of over 50,000 volunteers.
These Toys for Tots volunteers come from every part of the country, including here in Bismarck, North Dakota. For Kari and Jordan Anderson of Big River Builders, Jason Sellers of Mattress Firm, and Jesse Peterson of Eide Automotive Group, this will be their fourth year helping Toys for Tots. After seeing a news story on the shortage of toy donations for Toys for Tots, Jason felt like he could do something to help. He reached out to Kari, Jordan, and Jesse,
as well as a few other businesses leaders. Together, they decided to pool their resources for this great cause.
In addition to donating money, these businesses donate their time. Each year, the businesses and their employees who participate are broken into teams who go shopping on different dates and times to buy gifts for an assigned age and gender. “It’s fun watching our employees do it because they like participating, knowing that they’re making a difference that way,” says Jason. Each year, these businesses donate about $20,000-$25,000 to purchase thousands of toys. They estimate that with the upcoming holiday season included they will have donated around $100,000. “The experience has given a lot back to us as business owners, especially around the holidays. You think about what you’re thankful for, and being able to provide an opportunity like that for parents and for kids is awesome,” says Jesse.
One of the reasons Toys for Tots has become so special to this group of business leaders is the way the toys are distributed to the children and how this impacts the parents in return. “I really like that it’s more of a private experience for people to come and get something for their child,” describes Kari. “You are there alone, by appointment, to shop for Christmas gifts for your child. It doesn’t feel as publicized for them.” Toys for Tots matters just as much to the parents, as it does to the kids. “We want kids to have a good time on Christmas, get the item they want, but it’s such a relief for parents to be able to give something to their children,” describes Jordan. Toys for Tots makes it possible for families who have fallen on hard times to still be able to participate in an important and fun holiday tradition. If you would like to help donate money or time to Toys for Tots, you can visit bismarck-nd.toysfortots.org for more information on the different opportunities you can sign up for.
