Female is the future. There are fifteen incredible women laughing and smiling together, all different ages, all different professions and titles, different backgrounds, and different looks on our cover. The one thing they all have in common is, these women are strong and powerful bosses. As women, we have been told since the beginning, “We live in a man’s world,” but times are changing. Women are claiming their own voice, becoming CEOs, inventing new products, curing diseases, all while being mother’s and wives…that is incredible. The following issue is all about highlighting amazing, local women and women supporting women! As women, we are up against a lot, whether it's our career choice or the constant struggle of balancing work and home life, we do not need to battle one another, as well. It’s about building each other up, supporting, and complementing one another, not competing and tearing each other down. Each and every woman is incredible, strong, beautiful, talented, quirky, smart, and different in her own way. Embrace your talents, your strengths, your beauty and use that to make a difference in the world. These fifteen women own their individuality; they embrace who they are and let their talents shine. From a middle school entrepreneur paying her own way to basketball camps, to the influential policy advisor, this issue will show you how these women do it all.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Well, I think my first job was technically with Herberger’s as a junior assistant, but my first real job was as a waitress at Perkins. I was a waitress at Perkins for actually a decade up until I was pregnant with my first child. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR OTHER BUSINESS PEOPLE? We’re really conservative business owners, so I wish we were more risk-takers than we are, so I give that advice to other people because I wish we’d do it more. I think that’s how you get successful in business, you have to take a risk. But the biggest piece of advice that I have is to really take the time to plan. So many people know their area well but maybe don’t understand business really well, so taking the time to really look at the market and develop a plan and see where a niche might be that you could fall into, that’s a huge thing. FAVORITE PODCAST THAT YOU FOLLOW? Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday is pretty epic, but when I was running for office I was listening to a ton of podcasts. If you want to get elected, podcasts are very helpful. 14
A FAVORITE MORNING ROUTINE? I’m a late sleeper. My routine is to hit the snooze button. I don’t have a great routine in the morning. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Cheese, cheese, cheese. Cheese is something I can’t live without, that’s pretty big. Any diet, there has to be allowance for cheese in there, or it’s just not going to work in my life. SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO/ FAVORITE ROLE MODEL? That’s really hard to pick one person. I have been extremely fortunate in my career that almost everyone I’ve had the opportunity to work for has been excellent and exactly what I needed at that point in my life and in my career. One that stands out is Julie Jeske. She’s on the Bismarck Parks and Rec board, and she was one of the first people I went to for advice when I decided to run for office. I wish I could run marathons like she does.
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A POLICY ADVISOR? I have been doing this for twenty-some years, since ’97. I love my job; I help clients navigate the political system in North Dakota, from the city to the county to the state level. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I love to cook, I am a total foodie. I enjoy yoga, and stretching, and cocktail hour with friends. I love cocktail hour. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job ever? Well, I worked at the library at the University of North Dakota, the Chester Fritz Library. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? I am an avid reader, I read as much as I can. I have many favorite books, I cannot just pick one, but I do have a favorite author, Vince Flynn. He is deceased, but he does have another author who has taken on the Mitch Rapp series. I am a news junkie, before most people get up in the morning I have read every headline and every daily newspaper across the state. WHAT IS YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?
I do the same thing every day, I get up, brush my teeth, make my bed, go to the bathroom, make coffee, stretch and do my daily devotionals. Every day I do the same thing. It keeps me sane. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Toothbrush and toothpaste, of course. WHAT DO YOU INVEST IN? I invest in myself, because that keeps me motivated, on spot and on track. I make sure I am healthy, mentally and physically. I also invest in the community. I love to volunteer, and have volunteered in many things over the years. Now I like to invest in one project a year with the community.
Congratulations to AMBER LARSON for being named as one of the 15 most influential women in Bismarck-Mandan. Through her leadership within our company and the region, Amber exemplifies Bartlett & West’s purpose of serving others and leading our communities to a better tomorrow.

KATHRY N F L E TC H E R , 2 2 Deputy Chief of Staff of the North Dakota Republican Party
HOW HAVE YOU COME TO HOLD THIS POSITION AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE? I owe much of this credit to the incredible leaders I have had along the way and have had the privilege to work for. I double majored at the University of Mary in Business Administration and Public Policy. I loved studying and loved my classes. Through my studies and professors and work study, I was told in early 2017 that Governor Doug Burgum’s office was looking for interns. I got hired and spent the next year and a half of my life in the most amazing learning environment. I learned and grew so much, it was an environment that cultivated ideas, encouraged questions and made a big impact on my future. I grew to love Republican politics. After graduation I knew I wanted to stay in politics because of my passion. I started out working for the Department of Trust Lands under the Land Commissioner, Jodi Smith. After working through the past legislative session, a mentor mentioned my name to the Republican Party and I was offered the job as Deputy Chief of Staff. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO, WHO CAN YOU CLAIM AS A MENTOR? Oh wow, I have had so many incredible people in my life that have impacted me in so many ways. 16
First and foremost, I look to God and the family I was raised in. My mother and father raised us to respect and question the world around us while putting God at the center. From there so many throughout my time at the Capital and the University. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Evan’s Feed and Livestock, in California. For two summers, I worked at the feed store. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PODCAST? You know there are so many great podcasts, but I do love the ever-popular Rachel Hollis. Although we may not agree politically, she’s got great ideas. I like her mantra of embracing your own grit and overcoming the obstacles in your own life. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I love working out and getting active. [Solidcore] has been a favorite past time. I have a twin sister, we love horseback riding and hanging out together with friends and family. And of course, because of the nature of my job, I do love perusing the internet and news headlines to read as much as I can and stay up to date with policies and world news.

Maggie and Kari both saw a need in the community to help children learn and grow into intelligent, wellrounded, happy kids. Kari watched her mom do it before her, and fell in love with the gratification of helping children and their parents all on her own. Maggie wanted a school different than the status quo where kids could go to learn in unique ways, so she started it. Both women continue to enrich the lives of children every day.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START THE SCHOOL? I founded the school two years ago and wanted a different place for my own kids. I did a ton of research on schools in different places, curriculums and practices all over and after all of that I decided we needed something different in Bismarck. Now, we are going into our third year and have over 15 students enrolled.
jobs around the house. It’s so funny and keeps me laughing. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Hugs from my kids, I have two boys. I get to see them in school as well as morning and night, but I could not live without them, they keep me going for sure.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I love being outside, hiking, walking. I love to read, I read as much as I can and as much as time allows. My kids are everything to me, and spending time with them is so important so when I can, I do.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN? Don’t have any regrets, take risks and just go with it. I often feel like taking on this big venture of a school is a lot, but I constantly remind myself that it’s a risk worth taking and just keep going. Just try.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I worked in the lumber yard in Beulah, I learned so much. The biggest lesson I learned there was to look around and see what needed to be done, not just stand there and wait to be told.
WHAT DO YOU INVEST IN? I invest in myself and my family. It’s so important to keep yourself motivated and going because that’s going to help you help others around you and be your best self.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PODCAST? Oh my gosh, I should probably say something different, but I am just going to tell you my actual favorite, it’s called My Dad wrote a Porno. I listen to it when I am mowing the lawn or doing odd 20
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? It was working for my mom at Sylvan Learning Center in 1995. I was just her helper. Also, babysitting and tutoring and all of that. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The difference we get to make in each child’s life. It's every time I get to meet with a kid and find out their goals and help them achieve them. My extra special favorite part of my job is when I get to work with the parents. Some of the time we see kids who really need help, or there’s something that’s not feeling right. I love being able to send mom and dad away and say 'You go home, be mom and dad, I got this.' I love the feeling of being able to help the parents as much as I get to help the kids. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO? Both my parents. They owned and operated their own businesses. Especially my mom, she owned Sylvan before I did. That was not on purpose, it wasn’t like I wanted to do what my mom did. I ended up falling in love with it. It became what it was, and then as a high schooler turning into an adult you learn to respect your parents and see how
smart they truly are. She’s a big inspiration for me. DO YOU HAVE A MORNING PRACTICE THAT GETS YOU GOING? Well, coffee, that’s a must. You know, just trying to read or do something inspirational. I have the serenity prayer in my bathroom so sometimes I read that. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I read. I love to play Scrabble, go on walks. We spend a lot of time on the river right now. Anything with sunshine, friends and people who are happy, you can find me there. WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE? I think for any of us, there’s not much that we can’t do, so finding either business or people to support you once you’ve decided what you want to do or what you want to overcome and lean into that. Again, find people who will cheer you on and not tell you why you can’t, but all the reasons that you can.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? All during high school I was a nurse aid in a nursing home, taking care of elderly people and I absolutely loved it! DID YOU KNOW ALL ALONG THIS WAS THE PATH YOU WOULD TAKE? All along I had a passion to be in some sort of nursing or medicine and the nurse practitioner program opened up in Bismarck and it just suited me so well, I absolutely love what I do. DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTORS/ ROLE MODELS? I have had them both, more of what I could call colleagues in Miami and New York as I am now into a lot of the hair and advanced cosmetic dermatology so I do a lot of training and a lot of my favorite mentors are down in Miami. They have become my mentors in life and professionally. WHAT IS YOUR MORNING OR NIGHTTIME ROUTINE? At bedtime I take my bath. I just soak and listen to my Calm app. It is a relaxing app that always has a life lesson in it and talks to you about gratitude, something that is always very fitting for the day.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Just being around my home with my family, I love it. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR? Anyone that wants to become an entrepreneur needs to surround themselves with people that are positive, passionate, and willing to share their information is key. WHAT MAKES SHELLY TICK? Getting up every day and loving what I do. Looking at my schedule for the day and being excited about everyone that I see and having an amazing staff that laughs ourselves through the day!
WHAT DO YOU DO AS OWNER? I manage the wellness spa and my employees. I make sure we are up and running every day and that our clients are happy and comfortable. We have so many services, from waxing, massages, facials, brows and lashes, we do a lot. I make sure our clients are getting the services they need and are relaxed and happy when they leave. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Well, my very first job was babysitting, I think I was babysitting at eight years old. It wasn't like it is today! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PODCAST? I listen to Tony Robbins. He’s so inspiring, I mean he really is. His tone of voice is relaxing and he covers all topics from personal to professional growth, he has insight on it all. WHO IS YOUR MENTOR/ ROLE MODEL? I had a previous manager, Jeff, and I always refer back to him in situations I get myself in and think 'What would Jeff do?' He taught me to not only be good at what you do professionally, but personally as well. He showed
me that work doesn’t need to be your whole life, it’s about balance and having a personal life can actually help your professional. It’s all about balance. WHAT IS YOUR MORNING ROUTINE, OR SOMETHING YOU DO EACH MORNING TO START THE DAY? I am more of a wing it kinda gal, I wouldn’t say I have a specific routine or anything I can’t live without, but honestly stretching in the morning before you start the day is so important. I enjoy getting up and stretching a little, help get the blood moving, you can collect your thoughts and be ready for the day. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED? Don’t take everything you do so seriously, have fun with what you do. Life is way too short to worry and take everything so seriously. Have fun with people you work with and where you work, incorporate fun in some part of your day.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was taking care of my great-grandma. I did overnight care with her on weekends when I was in about eighth grade up through my sophomore year. After that, my real job was a CNA in a hospital in Hettinger, North Dakota. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PODCAST? I listen to so many podcasts. I have two favorites. I listen to the Rise podcast with Rachel Hollis and the Rise Together one. I also listen to Impact Theory a lot on brain development and that sort of stuff.
to do with projects outdoors, and I like to run and workout, but anything outside in the summertime. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? I like to see people move forward. Not only in their health, but you can see they start becoming a different person when they start feeling better. How they show up for their families once their health is under control or they’re getting better. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE? Ask questions and be coachable.
WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO AS A MENTOR? I have a lot of mentors, I would say they probably don’t even know they are mentors. People I look up to are usually women that are in business or are actually trying to go for something a little bigger in their lives and aren’t scared to talk about it. But the number one I would say is my dad as somebody I look up to and really respect. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I love being outside. people in the community or people in the community coming up to him, and it seemed like he knew everybody. I thought that was pretty cool. ANY ADVICE FOR THOSE IN BUSINESS? It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but the reward is there if you keep plugging away and keep with it.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? My favorite part of the job is seeing a plan come into action, to see the fruits of your labor, to see all of our stores meeting their goals that we’re setting. Hearing feedback from customers about good customer service experiences they’ve had in the pharmacies, the feedback from things that we’ve put into place, or the things we really want to happen- hearing that it’s working. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO AS A MENTOR/ROLE MODEL? Typically, people I look up to are people in the industry that are other pharmacy owners, they’re in different states. I’m part of a group of pharmacy owners, so those are the kind of people that I look up to. They’ve been in my place and been successful, so I look up to them.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I worked my first legit paid job at Rax. It’s like an Arby’s, roast beef style restaurant. I grew up in Minot and it was on Broadway. WHAT DO YOU DO DAYTO-DAY? I always say my number one job is to provide opportunities, remove road blocks, build teams, and make people want to come to work every day. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? My kids. I have two - a sixteenyear-old son and a thirteen-yearold daughter. WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS OR ROLE MODELS? I have many. My grandfather was the first. From a very young age he encouraged me to do whatever it is I wanted to do, and he grew up in an era where women probably didn’t do whatever they wanted to do. Honestly, he probably believed I was one of the few women that could do whatever I wanted to do. It was always very inspiring, he always pushed me, too. He was the first one who got me investing when I was nine years old, thinking about business and financial statements. He was my first and probably number one mentor. I’ve had so many since being an adult, but if I had to pick one, there was one gentleman, Tim Atkinson. He was the CEO of North Dakota Guaranty & Title before he retired a few years back. We’d go to lunch and he’d encourage 34
me to do things that I was more nervous about, not wanting to get out of my box type of stuff. He was a great out of family mentor for me. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR THOSE IN BUSINESS? I think the number one rule that I have always lived by is there isn’t one person that knows it all or can do it all. The biggest thing that you can do is find that mentor or don’t be afraid to ask questions because there is, and I’ve really noticed this about Bismarck-Mandan, a whole community of people that are willing to just help out if you are just willing to ask. I really believe in that. It goes back to, one person doesn’t know everything. Build a strong team. With the right people around you I really do think you can be the be all expert of all things if you work as one team. DO YOU HAVE A MORNING ROUTINE? Not really, my mornings are a little crazy, but one thing that I do every morning as soon as I get to work I get a bottle of water and big cup of coffee. If I don’t do that first, my whole day is shot.
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My very first job was working at a soil testing laboratory. DO YOU HAVE A MORNING ROUTINE? The alarm goes off, the first thing I have to grab is my phone. I like to do my newsfeed. I like to start off the day knowing what’s going on, locally, state-wide, and nation-wide. From there I go and check my social media for the business, and doing any replies if I need to do that, and just check the calendar to see what’s coming up for the day. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Coffee from Coal Country Coffee Company. WHAT DO YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS? Education and training with lethal and non-lethal personal protection tools, and then everyday business management, financing, employee tracking. Also, one-on-one social with the members and customers that come into that store. I love seeing and hearing what’s going on in Bismarck-Mandan, the good and unfortunately, I get to hear the bad, too. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO AS A ROLE MODEL? I know this sounds strange, but Alice Cooper. Alice Cooper has his job, which is his stage performance. Off of that stage, he has a wonderful organization called the Solid Rock Foundation. He and his bride Sheryl, a professionally trained
dancer, have a great center in downtown Phoenix for youth who need something to do. They provide free music training, free dance lessons. They give these kids a purpose. I hope I can get my facility up and going even farther to be able to provide a safe haven for not only youth, but men and women. I always loved his music. I’ve met him a couple times now and every time he always says thank you so much for letting me do what I love and for helping me to help with my organizations. He truly means it and it just makes you want to cry. The balance that he has, I really do worship that. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU KNEW GOING INTO BUSINESS? Don’t feel that you need to do this alone. I had a vision of wanting to do Prairie Patriot. We had it in our heads that we didn’t want any other business partners with us because we had this vision of what we wanted to do. In hindsight, because of the volume of what it took, the industry that I’m in, and the dollar amount, I wish we had said, ‘Nope, let’s seek out other investors to help us through this.’ If somebody else comes forward to say. ‘yeah I’m interested to do this with you,’ go for it. Just really look at all those options, and really try to say, ‘if we are going to do this, what is going to be the impact years down the road, can we sustain this or not,’ because it’s a battle every day and once you can get comfortable with that, then go forward with that business plan.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL? The University of North Dakota for college and Mandan High School. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was at the YMCA in the daycare. It was great! WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I would say seeing my customers every single day, and my staff. I’m very fortunate to have a dedicated group of people who love what they do. I just love my customers; I love being with the community. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT? I don’t think I could live without my family. That is very important, that’s why I work hard every day. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I like to be out at our lake cabin. I like to go fishing. I try to get out golfing, but I don’t get there as much as I’d like to.
honored to carry that business forward for him. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE? In general, invest in other people. I think relationships are so important. I always like to say 'whatever industry you specialize in, or what you’re selling, or what trade you work in, you work with people and that’s the most important thing.' If you can understand people and invest in a relationship with somebody else, that’s really what will make you successful. That is the number one thing we all have to focus on is how we connect with other people. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOOK? I can think of several… I would say Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. That’s a really good one just about how to connect with other people. That’s one of mine I have marked all over. WHAT OR WHO DO YOU INVEST ENERGY IN? People. Like I was saying before, I really think the foundation to success is getting back to those relationships, so I focus back on that in every facet in my life, whether it’s my family, my employees, my customers. I just think a personal relationship is really important, so I invest a lot in that. And then, myself as well, making sure my skills are sharp to be able to lead others.
WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO? For my industry, I probably look up to my father the most. He owned the business before I did, and he’d taught me a lot about how to really work with our customers and how to run a business, so I’ve looked up to him all my life. Now, I’m really 36 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019

Say goodbye to leg pain Dr. Steven Hamar, vascular surgeon at Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck, knows what it’s like to suffer from varicose veins. “I was 16 when I had my first varicose veins and I had my first surgery at 35,” Dr. Hamar says. “I’ve had three other surgeries since then.” Vein problems develop in all age groups and affect about 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men. “Fifty percent of the population over the age of 50 have varicosities of some kind,” Dr. Hamar says. Patients may experience leg fatigue or heaviness, burning and swelling with more serious conditions or simply have an unsightly appearance. The good news is there is relief for the discomfort and appearance of most unsightly veins. The Vein Center is a one-stop center for patients where options range from conservative, non-invasive treatments to the latest minimally invasive procedures Before After that can be performed in-office. The most common vein problems Dr. Hamar treats are varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, which are veins that are not functioning properly and are refluxing. Reflux is the inability of a vein to stop blood from rushing back down the leg, thereby increasing venous pressure and creating symptoms of venous disease. The objective is to relieve the reflux that has created the problem. Some patients can be helped through simple, non-surgical approaches such as wearing compression stockings, while others are best helped with sclerotherapy, endovenous closure, stripping, or TRIVEX® for varicose veins. “We want to do this right,” Dr. Hamar says. “I spend about an hour with you the first time, going through your history and your symptoms. We’ll talk about venous disease, why you have it 52
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019
and the best approach to treat it. We’ll also discuss compression stockings, as most insurance carriers require three months of use before we can do anything definitive about your veins.” If a decision is made to proceed with further treatment, most patients are scheduled on an outpatient basis. Procedures take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the size and number of veins to be treated, and the treatment approach that is chosen. Dr. Hamar says that he uses the TRIVEX® system most often, which eliminates the need for multiple incisions in the leg and causes very little, if any, pain. Many patients return to work in one or two days. “What we do today is not like your grandma’s old vein stripping. It’s faster, easier and more thorough. Most say their leg feels good on the first visit back. They say they didn’t realize their leg was hurting that badly, and now it feels great!” Dr. Hamar has been doing vein procedures for 40 years, and has concentrated solely on veins for the past 10 years. “Usually these are not life-threatening situations, but it can make your life uncomfortable,” he says. “I really enjoy making people feel better,” he says. “We can prevent life-long uncomfortable legs. Most people ask why in the world did I wait so long?”

Foodstuff with Medora Sletten
I
first fell in love with french fries at McDonald’s. I consider the Bismarck Expressway McDonald’s my home McDonald’s, but I have come to love all of them across Bismarck-Mandan and beyond. Honestly, all I need is McDonald’s and Jesus. Personally, my favorite part of ordering a side (or plate or basket or bag or box) of fries is the feeling I get when I see everyone’s hands diving into the same basket. In my mind they are the perfect shareable food item because there is enough for everyone and you don’t have to portion them out evenly among the hungry eaters. There is no way to tell who ate the most, so I just dive in and wish everyone else good luck. Fries are perfect, end of story.

Fries are perhaps one of the simplest foods we eat in American culture, yet, people have endless opinions about them. For months now I have been asking everyone I know, “Why do you like french fries?” Trust me, it’s an amazing conversation starter. It’s quite shocking how quickly people can come up with their favorite thing about fries. I have come to learn that people are much keener to talk about whether they like their fries crispy versus potato-y than they are to talk about their feelings. The truth is, fries have countless attractive qualities; they’re

technically a vegetable so they’re healthy, especially sweet potato fries. Fries teach toddlers about Europe (they’re French!), and in a time when half the world is gluten free, you can count on fries to please everyone. But one of the french fries’ greatest strengths is that they are a safety blanket for any new restaurant. No matter how foreign the menu, you can almost always guarantee you’ll find good fries. adventure, I gladly went to five different local restaurants to try five different local fries. Scotty’s Drive In Scotty’s, how do you make all your fries look so uniform? From one end of the fry to the other, yours are full and tasty. Also, you serve them piping hot, yet they keep their full shape and size. This all adds up to be the perfect vessel for ketchup dipping. High five to you, Scotty’s! Woodhouse Woodhouse, thank you for
having the most memorable way of ordering food this side of the Big Dipper (don’t know what this means? Treat yourself to the Woodhouse and you’ll soon find out!) Your fries are crispy and then squishy - they are truly deliciously indescribable. They also have the perfect amount of potato to skin which reminds the eater that they are the real deal. Blarney Stone Blarney Stone, I walked in and said, “I will take all of the fries, please,” and I left feeling very full. A full belly and a full heart. You have such a large array of
fries and dipping options that there is something for everyone. Thank you for bringing me a side salad with my fries and then not judging me when I didn't even look at it. Station West Station West, when I eat at your establishment, I feel thankful for all that I have - and at Station West I have a lot of fries. You serve your fries higher than hay bales! Thank you for not holding back. Your loaded fries are exactly what I need Monday through Sunday. Big Boy Big Boy, your fries make me feel good because they taste good! Simple as that. But I sometimes feel a slice of frustration because you tape your fry boxes shut and you better believe I want to dive into that box as soon as it’s handed to me through your beautiful, little to-go window. It’s you versus the box at Big Boy and their fries are box ripping good! Fries and gravy? The answer is always “yes!” As always, may this be your encouragement to break bread together more often. Have a little fun this month and order the extra side of fries to share with the table. Dive into those fries...and the conversation.

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019
And that’s a wrap for year three. North Dakota Country Fest is the event of the summer! Founders Luke Shafer and Brandon Ralph did it again, locking down big headliners like Jake Owen, Travis Tritt and David Lee Murphy for 2019 and even bigger headliners for 2020. The weekend began with a bang on Thursday, July 11 with their Give Back Night, raising over $25,000 for charity. The fun continued Friday and Saturday with games and activities all day and jamming music at night. Jake Owen capped off Saturday with a killer performance that left the crowd wanting more. The weekend was hot with the temperature hitting 90 degrees over the weekend but the festers kept
cool with water fights. The festival had over 800 campers, selling out VIP camping, over 21,000 attendees, and ticket purchases reached over 32 states and a record amount of fun. “The audience was incredible, people were cheering and excited and going crazy for the music. Our sponsors and support from the community is always so humbling, it’s great to see our community come together to support an event like this for North Dakota,” says Brandon. The experience of ND Country Fest is a big deal for its founders and Luke and Brandon work hard to make every year better. They finished up the weekend by
announcing 2020 headliners Dustin Lynch and Chris Janson. It’s the event of the summer and if you don’t want FOMO get your tickets soon. Tickets and camping are now on sale and are going fast. If you don’t want to miss out on a #ndgoodtime visit ndcountryfest.com and get your tickets today! Buy Now and Save before the next price increase! NDCOUNTRYFEST.COM

Give yourself grace. See above about selflove but adding to that... Being healthy is about moderation - moderation in what we eat, do, expect. Don’t be so hard on yourself and instead of looking for perfection, strive for progress.
While Vanessa & Callie may be a Dietitian & Nurse, they are also moms. They get it. They know not every night will be 7+ hours of sleep and they understand the roll of chicken nuggets in meal planning :) But they also know that it takes small and consistent daily habits to maintain life-long wellness.
