INSIGHT INTO THE RISK TAKERS IN OUR COMMUNITY
Founded by Bismarck-native Patrick Atkinson in 1991, The GOD’S CHILD Project has raised over 80,000 Guatemalan children into positive, professional adulthood, and helped, housed, and educated tens of thousands more in the United States, El Salvador, India, and Africa. These multi-award winning programs work with volunteers from around the world, and especially with a solid core of North Dakota supporters. Together we are saving lives. Come join us. No experience needed. Sponsors, donors, educators, home-builders, and baby-patient huggers-and-holders are always needed.

When it comes to fashion and the latest trends SCHEELS is the place to shop. We talked to Kristin Kieper, Lead Fashion Assistant Store Leader at the Bismarck SCHEELS and she said "When it comes to fall fashion, there are a few key pieces that are must-haves in your closet." Kristin has worked within the Kirkwood Mall for over 20 years and has seen many trends that have come and gone. She wants to make sure that when putting together your fall wardrobe this season, you'll have a few key, staple pieces that will be in style for a few years to come.
Having a favorite bottom is essential and this fall a great go-to brand is KUT . The High Rise Rachel Rab Ab jean is a great skinny leg option with a raw hem that gives it a nice update.
Every woman needs a nice knit trouser pant that can be dressed up or down. The Liverpool Kelsey Trouser is great, as it comes in a variety of colors and lengths, and is a great alternative to leggings.
High-quality layering pieces are a must and 7 Diamonds has a variety of options that are all winners. Their materials were made to last, so stock up on styles like the classic crew tee, ribbed tee and pocket tee, as these will be worn again and again.
Timeless button down shirts are a highly versatile staple. Tribal’s The Shirt is a great go-to for the work day, but it can easily be worn with a jean for a night out on the town, and can even work as a swim cover up for your next trip to the beach.
Blazers, jackets or shackets! So many choices and SCHEELS has a wide variety of all to choose from.
Liverpool’s Los Angeles Boyfriend Blazer has a great fit and is an easy way to take a simple office look to the next level. Fornia’s Shacket will quickly become a staple piece, as it can be worn for so many occasions!
The statement sneaker or as some say the basic sneaker, in a tonal look, is a trend that’s not going away. The Nike Court Legacy is all the rage for all ages and this trend looks great with a mom jean, graphic tee and blazer, while being versatile enough for many different looks.
The newest addition that’s making quite the state ment this season, is the loafer. Dolce Vita’s Moyra is a twist on the tried and true loafer, designed to effortlessly transition from day to night.
Headwear is a nice way to accent a fall outfit and is always a fun statement piece. This year the felt hat trend, like the C.C. Wool Short Brim Fedora , will continue to make a strong, fashionable presence.
Premium purses are a great piece to add to your closet that will continue to be a staple for years to come. BED STU offers high-quality leather and the Rockababy Rowan Purse is an update to a best selling tote!
Simple gold necklaces are classic. There’s no need to have just one, layer them for a fun, dimensional look. Kendra Scott is a favorite brand and the Brielle Stand Necklace is a great multi-strand option!

Stephen: “Pine Petroleum and Pine Oil are exploratory companies, so we participate in the drilling of oil and gas wells in mostly ND, some in MT. Pine Minerals is a mineral company. We own minerals and royalties that we also lease and do some drilling with those. Pine Investments Company is an overriding royalty company, so leases that we’ve acquired, that we’ve sold, we’ve retained an oil right in royalty on those leases. Pine Properties was designed for real estate development.”
Carla: “We also have the Pine Properties and Broadway Centre, so that encompasses all the condos, the main building that has the real estate with the office buildings, and then we have the Broadway Grill and Tavern.”
Carla: “Originally, I wanted to do a little restaurant where we would do a Thursday, Friday, Saturday limited menu, and then Steve decided to buy this crazy lot.”
Stephen: “We actually bought the block and then decided what to do with it. We didn’t have the foresight to know what we were going to do with it until we acquired it. But, we love Bismarck, and we love the community, and we wanted to help redevelop downtown. The Renaissance Zone financing that was available at the time was an incentive to do that too because otherwise you wouldn’t take on this kind of financial risk. With that concept in mind, we considered, what does downtown need? Housing for one. More grade A office space for two, and then as part of that concept
we thought, if we’re going to have commercial tenants in here, having a restaurant might be a nice addition for them.”
Stephen: “I enjoy the self-employment aspect of it, being able to make our own decisions, to spend money as we think is appropriate, and just allow ourselves to be philanthropic and do things for the community.”
Carla: “You don’t have too many rules to follow. You just make them up as you go along.”
MOST PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR RESTAURANTS, BUT CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT NORTHERN IMMERSION IS?
“Northern Immersion is a bitcoin mining company. All our restaurants have bitcoin on the balance sheet and mine bitcoin, and it’s a good way for us to utilize our operating capital and to invest in another asset class instead of just letting our capital sit there and be subject to inflation… once when we dabbled in that with other mining companies I realized, why don’t we do this ourselves, and then I got sucked in… and it's exploded. It’s on a scale I never thought it would.”
“It was Grand Junction Subs… I was 25 at the time and didn’t have a lot of money, and had this idea… I made
a deal with the founder of Grand Junction. He said if you do a million dollars of sales in your first year, then you’re obviously the right guy to take this brand and do what you think is best with it. We did over a million in our first year, so he said the brand is yours now, so I trademarked it.”
“To be honest, it’s the people. The hospitality industry is just a really good way to serve a lot of customers, and I’ve always been a people person.”
“I saw an opportunity for me to impact the community in a positive way. Why wouldn’t we just go deeper in our market here, and do more for our
community here in Bismarck-Mandan. We got the taste of how we are able to help, and we love doing different things like providing free meals to kids during COVID. There are all these things that restaurants can do to help the community and we were like we can probably make more of an impact if we continue to focus on our markets. I’m so glad we did because then the CraftCade happened and then Laughing Sun happened.”
“You don’t have to know anything about what you’re getting into. You just have to have a good work ethic, have good character and just be willing to learn and willing to fail.”

WHAT IS PIERSON PROPERTY MANAGEMENT?
“Pierson Property Management is a property management company that I have nine rentals for, and we will be taking on six more. They’re all clients. I don’t do it for outside people unless they’re friends or family.”
WHAT IS LUXXE REALTY?
“Luxxe Realty is a real estate brokerage. We service all of Bismarck, Mandan and surrounding areas. We do residential, commercial, industrial, land, and investment portfolios. Anything you can think of in real estate, we will do.”
WHAT DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF LUXXE REALTY AS?
“I have two people getting their licenses, and hopefully I’ll have a
few more come over, and we will see there. I don’t plan on going big. I just want to have a good group of women, boss babes, just doing their thing.”
WHAT IS PROTEIN HOUSE?
“Protein House is a healthy fit kitchen. The mission for Protein House is to eat with purpose and have good mental and physical wellbeing. Everything is all-natural, all clean eating. There are no GMOs or anything like that. We also do meal prep and catering.”
HOW DO YOUR COMPANIES COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER?
“All my businesses do because they’re about helping everybody. With eating healthy and then buying a house, we need to make memories and also eat healthy to keep our lives good. I also complement them
all because I’ve always wanted to help people and give back to the community through my work.”
HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME?
“It’s tough. It’s every day. It’s not like you can just take one day off. You’re always working on the weekends, and you’re always doing what you have to.”
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESSES?
“I love being on my own. It’s always been a dream of mine, ever since I was a little girl, to own my own businesses and be a role model to others that whatever you set your mind to you can do, no matter how big or small your goal is.”
“Glance Spa and Salon is a fullservice salon and day spa. We don’t have massage, that’s the only service we don’t offer. We have a team of 15 here. We’re a team-based salon which is different and unique to our city. It’s a cool culture that we operate out of here.”
“The Hair Academy came about two years ago. Colton and Sam Shoults approached me because we are neighbors with the CraftCade and just asked if I’d be interested in venturing into that dream parttime with Sam. Sam’s mom, Carol, was one of the owners previously of the Hair Academy, so she wanted to buy her mom’s business but didn’t have any industry experience. Education is
something that I am super passionate about. Glance has its own Glance Grow program here where we love to take students from school and train them ourselves. It seemed to be a good fit, so I took the leap of faith and now have been doing both businesses the past two years.”
“I love seeing all the changes at the Hair Academy. We’ve had a ton of changes, most recently is marketing, branding, and an internal growth program. We are just developing and doing things differently, innovating, but living out values to continue to grow and make things better for our industry. Ultimately that’s what it’s all about.”
“Honestly, I love to see growth and change and continually stretching ourselves and even our ideas. At Glance, my favorite part is watching the stylists grow and mature over the years, not only in their skills with hair but also in leadership. We work hard on becoming educators, so how to teach others, how to work with others, even in getting outside of your comfort zone in a lot of different ways, not just coloring hair. With students at the Hair Academy, that’s also the best part. We only have them for a year, so the minute they start they don’t know how to hold a comb or a shear. I love watching them a year later able to go out and make a career for themselves.”
Choosing a breast pump can be challenging. At Sanford Health Equip, our knowledgeable team can help you explore a variety of trusted brands we have on display, including Medela, Spectra and Zomee.
We have everything you need to make your breastfeeding experience a little easier. Scan the QR code to learn more about our breast pumps and supplies.
“We sell all different types of steel, so we stock a lot of different items. Most of the common items are flats, beams, channels, pipe, sheet, angle, and plate. And we do some fabrication, mostly cutting to the lengths that the customers want. We do some shear and bend work, so we bend things if you need different things made.”
“We service central western North Dakota, and we deliver almost every day during the week to different parts of the state. Most of our customers are welding shops, repair shops, or smaller fabricators. We have a lot of hobbyists too, a lot of walk-in trades, a lot of farmers and ranchers. We do stuff with the coal mines, power plants, and some oil customers. We
have a wide variety of customers.”
“Years ago, my dad had a used pipe business. He sold used pipes. It was always a side business for him, and I grew up around it. When I was about thirty, I took it over and evolved it into selling new steel because I was looking for ways to grow.”
“Endless Tubing is a spooling service company for coil tubing. Coil tubing is used strictly in the oil and gas industry… We’re the only independent spooling company in North America, so we do all the spooling work for the coal tubing companies in North Dakota. There are three manufacturers that make it, all in Houston, Texas. We bring it up here, we store it at our facility for our customers, and when
they need new pipe, they come to us instead of having to go all the way back to Houston to get it… It’s like five miles of pipe that is rolled up on these big, huge rolls. There will be 2528,000 feet of pipe on it. They weigh 130, 140, 150,000 pounds.”
“I have some really, really good employees. About the only way you can manage multiple businesses is having a good team and good people around you. You know that they’re on board with what you’re trying to do.”
“I’m always working on something. I’m always looking for opportunity and always trying to look for ways to grow.”

WHAT IS LACEY’S CUSTOM JEWELRY?
“Lacey’s Custom Jewelry is a fullservice shop where I do all custom remaking of old jewelry into something new. I also do appraisals, repairs, anything you think of. You come in, and I will design it or fix it for you.”
WHAT IS ESTATE GALLERY?
“Estate Gallery is a different angle for a store because we didn’t have a lot of places to get vintage or antique items. I had a lot of items saved so I thought, you know what, we need to go a different angle, antique, vintage jewelry, upcycled, recycled items. The object of the store is to basically promote less waste, let’s use what we’ve got, and let’s promote local businesses.”
HOW DO YOUR TWO BUSINESSES COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER?
“We consider Lacey’s to be what Lacey is like on the outside, professional, and Estate Gallery is like Lacey on the inside… cluttered and full of stuff, constantly changing, and moving, moving, moving.”
YOU ARE DIFFERENT THAN OUR OTHER BUSINESSES BECAUSE YOUR TWO BUSINESSES ARE CONNECTED PHYSICALLY BY A DOOR. HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR DAY-TO-DAY?
“I actually find it more relaxing… Honestly, it’s because I’m really lucky that I have the right manager, and I can trust that she’s doing what she’s doing. And because I can check in for a quick minute, and go back to Lacey’s… or she can go, hey I’ve got to ask you a question, and literally goes right back to work, it’s super convenient.”
HOW DO YOU BALANCE EVERYTHING?
“There is no balance… when I’m at home, I truly am at home when I’m with my kids. I try to be present, and I’m really present at work. I think that helps me. That’s a good enough balance that I can get… I try to keep my focus in front of me.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
“I always have literally three businesses in my brain of what I’d like to do next. I will always drop one because I’ll think of something else. There’s an empty space in this building where my staff is really scared that I’m going to do something… I told myself I’m not doing anything this summer, everyone needs a break, but we will see what next summer holds.”
“I started with boutiques in Bismarck and then realized that I needed a stable job, so I started working at Sixteen03 Main Events in 2014 as the manager… [At that time] it was a venue rental only... I worked on commission, so I was like, we need to find other ways to make money, and we should probably get into the decorating business and into the floral business… [Then] people were calling and asking if we do mobile bar service, so we said let’s start one… [When] all the Sixteen03 things were good and going and buzzing… The Paddle Trap came around in 2019… Someone called and said, hey if you want to take over this building on the river and do something with
it, it’s available… Then everything over there built off of, well, we need a food truck because our kitchen isn’t big enough, and we need to do something cool in the winter because this isn’t just a summer place. The Bowls to Go was to keep our kitchen busy with fun catering stuff that’s a little bit different. Then, Kirsten and Jake had asked if we had wanted to go in on a venue with them… so Venue Twenty5 happened. Then Fort Abraham Lincoln called and said, do you want The Post, so we remodeled that, and just opened that last summer. Brit worked for me at the boutique stores, and we didn’t want to stop working together when I closed the stores, so we started a wholesale company, KitschyPOP as a way for us to continue to work together, and then I eventually hired her to work for me
here, and she’s been here for a long time now.”
“I’ve always been really excited about ideas and starting and the creating part... I just kind of keep going because I get excited about the next new idea… It just seems so endless, the ideas and the opportunities around.”
“We’re taking a little break for the moment… but if opportunities come our way that make sense, we will definitely keep looking at them. I still have a lot of ideas for things I’d like to do later.”
SIXTEEN03 MAIN EVENTS, THE EVENT DESIGN AGENCY, THE TIPSY 2HORSE, THE PADDLE TRAP, TACO TRAP, POLAR TRAP, BOWLS TO GO, KITSCHYPOP, VENUE TWENTY5 AND THE POSTSaturday, September 30th, 2023 5:30 p.m. - until the stars come out!
HOW DO YOU BALANCE MANAGING ALL YOUR DIFFERENT COMPANIES?
“Basically, as you get older, you find out how to mitigate issues when running companies, and one is surrounding yourself with a really good team. The people I have around me are exceptional. I wouldn’t be able to do all this stuff without them. They help me every day.”
WHY DO YOU ENJOY RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESSES?
“I’m working a lot. I can’t really put my work away. My mind is always working. But really the things I do really aren’t work to me. They’re exciting and fun. I love challenges. I love to challenge myself.”
WHAT HELPS YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR WORKDAY?
“My favorite time is the morning. I like having a cup of coffee and getting my thoughts together and strategizing, like what I’m going to get accomplished today, and what my goals moving forward are, for the week, month, and in life.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR WORK?
“I just wanted to do what I wanted to do, and it seems like the only way you’ll learn your lesson is just doing it yourself. I’ve had plenty of failures in my life, and plenty of things where things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to, but you try to learn from it and move on. The older I’ve
gotten, the people around me are a huge driving force for myself as well because every decision I make has an effect on a lot of other people’s lives, so I take that very seriously when I make decisions.”
ARE YOU READY FOR A BREAK OR LOOKING FOR MORE OPPORTUNITIES?
“I always say that I’m ready for a break, but when it comes down to it, do I want to slow down? No. Every day I go to work I have so much fun, and I’m really surrounded by so many great people. Now, I’m becoming excited for the next generation and creating opportunities for them.”

Across the country the restaurant industry is taking a turn, and Bismarck, North Dakota is following suit.
Food trucks are making delicious & interesting food accessible with talented chefs leaving the pressure of the fine dining industry for the open road.
High cost of rent and the lack of help are among the variables in the changing of tides. Regardless of the reasons, this new trend is an exciting one. Drive-thrus and over-reaching menus are a thing of the past. Visiting with the Chef while you enjoy freshly made, delicious creations at a local farmers market or side street is the new culinary adventure.
In 2022, Mabel's All Day was voted “Best Food Truck.” Their elevated classics are hard to beat. In only their third year of business, they’ve created buzz heard round the plains.
Chef Sam Williams who owns and operates Mabel's All Day is enjoying being a part of the changing food scene here in Bismarck. “People want good flavors made with quality ingredients and are realizing that not all burgers or pork belly tacos are created equal” says Sam.
Another trend we are seeing is a focus on local food. Chefs are
skipping the big box food suppliers and instead opting to form relationships with local growers and ranchers and developing menus based on what’s in season or representative of the area such as 100% grass-fed beef that was born, grazed, and processed in ND or cold pressed juice using apples from the fall harvest.
“Who raised the beef or harvested the greens you’re eating? Who made the bread? These are questions most restaurants do not know the answer to,” says Sam. “Our hope is that things we’re doing will catch on and inspire people to be more thoughtful about what they’re eating and where it comes from.”
Sam continues, “From the beginning we set out to focus on the community here in Bismarck. Forming relationships with purveyors, farmers, ranchers, growers and then relaying that feeling to the customer that they are eating something special. That’s what our business is about and that’s where the magic happens.”
