LETTER
FROM THE PUBLISHERS First, we must begin by thanking each and every one of our readers and advertisers from this past year. We have had an astounding amount of support in our first year of publishing River + Ranch Magazine and we could not be more excited to continue and expand. 2018 has been a year of growth and we are excited to continue showcasing homes, design, art, and culture throughout the Western Plains. The Holiday Season is one of the most wonderful times of the year, truly a favorite. The snow makes you feel as though you’re in a magical snow globe, the hustle and bustle of the stores are a little crazy, yet everyone seems to smile, and cooking for friends and family isn’t a chore, but rather a way to spend time with others and create a feast for all. Christmas is a time for loved ones, coming home for the holidays and making memories for years to come. Decorating for the festive season is one of the team’s favorite parts of Christmas, finding sentimental ornaments from years ago, hanging garland and wreathes everywhere, and of course putting up stockings in hopes Santa brings you what you wished for. Find out how homes across town are decorating for the holidays, with more than just green and red. Find tips and tricks for creating the perfect holiday dinner, and just how long to cook that Christmas brisket. From the entire team at River + Ranch Magazine, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The holidays are quickly approaching, and this time of year means time with family and friends to honor favorite holiday traditions. Think about your favorite holiday tradition. Where did it begin? We’re guessing at home. Join us as we bring you into a beautiful home complete with festive decorations and delicious holiday fare. We bet you’ll be inspired to bring back an old, favorite tradition or begin one of your own.
Setting the Stage When the guys from Knutson Homes set out to build a house in Whispering Bay, they decided to design a home with mass appeal. “The community is geared toward empty nesters and snow birds but a younger couple that wants to be on the water would fit right in here, too,” explains Cory Knutson.
A family business, Knutson Homes has been around for 30 years. “Our dad started it and ran it for 20 years and we’ve run it now for 10 years in August,” says Drew Knutson. When asked about his favorite part of home building Drew says it’s seeing it all come together, “Every project is unique and that makes it fun.”

Designed by Knutson Homes’ own Nate Wolfe, this 2,059 square foot patio home has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. The master suite includes a double vanity, custom shower, and soaker tub. Large windows allow light to flow freely into the home as well as give way to great views of the bay across the way. The bay and river can be accessed by the home’s dock. The bright kitchen and open concept to the main room allows for ample space to create your own family traditions during the holidays.
14
RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2018 - January 2019
For Drew, Cory, and Nate holiday tradition is centered around family. “It’s family meals, get togethers, Christmas Day and Eve. The whole works,” smiles Drew.
Decking the Halls The Whispering Bay home is decked out for the holidays thanks to the thoughtful touch of Mary Kay Lapp, owner of 11th Avenue Interiors and staged by Interiors by France. Using silver, gold, and white with splashes of blue, Mary Kay was able to evoke elegance throughout the home.

“I try to make it really easy for people that don’t have a design background, who don’t necessarily think they’re good decorators,” Mary Kay explains. She suggests going to Hobby Lobby for décor because the store groups everything together by color which makes sticking to a theme easier. For inspiration Mary Kay suggests heading to the internet, “I love using Pinterest for inspiration for Christmas ideas.”
As you walk up the path to the Whispering Bay home, you’re greeted by festively wrapped presents that could very well have been left by Santa himself. Take a step inside and you’re welcomed into a cozy entry way by a creative exclamation of JOY with large industrial letters and a holiday wreath for the ‘O’. Flocked greenery and pinecone garland add a wintery feel, without the chill, throughout the home.

The kitchen and dining table glow with the soft light of candles. “I use lots of candles because they’re easy and they signify Christ’s light during the Christmas season,” explains Mary Kay. Gold touches on the tableware and candle sconces on the kitchen island continue the elegant theme. Simple green wreaths hang from each cabinet and window and add just the right amount of color.

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2018 - January 2019
Mary Kay suggests spreading holiday cheer throughout your home. “I like to put Christmas trees in bedrooms. I think its romantic with the lights and it’s a fun surprise to walk into the room and see a tree,” smiles Mary Kay. An unexpected, beautiful white tree with blue accents brings holiday magic to the master bedroom. “While blue is untraditional, I wanted to tie in the blue from the wall in the kitchen and dining area.”

Mary Kay’s love of decorating, and especially decorating for Christmas, began at a young age. “My mom was a master decorator. She would decorate for every season, especially Christmas. She instilled in me the love of decorating.”
While decorating is Mary Kay’s passion, her favorite holiday tradition begins right after Thanksgiving, “My family has lots of Christmas puzzles, so we get out a Christmas puzzle and the whole family works on it throughout the Christmas season. We all love the Christmas puzzle.”

Gather 'round the Table No holiday gathering is complete without delicious food. Darrell Mathews, owner and head chef at Darrell’s Brew n’ Que knows how to put together a holiday spread. A traditional meal, with a bar-b-que twist, was on the menu for the day. “I’ve prepared our 18-hour smoked brisket and a traditional honey baked ham. Our ham has a light smoke and glaze and will be available during the holidays,” explains Darrell. The meal also included traditional sides of mashed potatoes and gravy, asparagus, cranberry sauce, and dressing.
If you need help with your holiday meals, Darrell is your man. While his brisket is incredibly succulent and delicious, he has more of a traditional favorite, “My favorite thing to cook over the holidays is our ham, everyone loves our ham.”
Darrell offers catering services for both office and home parties as Bismarck Catering, Co with the help of his catering Manager ReBecka Wohl. Darrell’s food is unique, and everything is cooked low and slow. “We use special inhouse seasonings that can’t be found everywhere. We smoke our salt and use that for our brisket,” explains Darrell.
w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com
25
Food is very much its own tradition when it comes to Darrell’s holidays. “Our family does sort of a double holiday. My mother in law cooks the majority of the food, I cook and then we combine it all together,” Darrell smiles.
When asked for tips to make it through the holiday season with a group of people Darrell laughs and replies, “A glass of wine.”
With 22 years of experience in the culinary industry, Darrell has cooked all over the US. Work brought him to Bismarck and he is more than happy to call it home. “It’s a great place, a nice community. Bismarck is a place that’s different than any other place I’ve been,” says Darrell.

“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening. A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, walking in a winter wonderland.” Stepping into the holiday showroom at Bridget’s Room feels exactly like this classic Christmas song. Beautiful crystal decorations, snow flocked Christmas trees, and white accent pieces are all part of the elegant design woven throughout the store.

Bridget’s Room does things differently than other interior design stores. Rather than focusing on the decorating, they start with the foundation, look at the walls, and work inward. Bridget Gerhardt, owner and designer of Bridget’s Room, likes to get to the heart of the issue and design a room even better than her clients expect. “I want to do more than they ask,” explains Bridget.

So, when it comes to Christmas decorating, Bridget’s Room is unique as well. “I like more of the icy, crystal-ly look you can put up at the end of October and keep through February. We do very little of the red and green. We like more of the winter wonderland, things that work with the current decor, a not too themed holiday,” explains Bridget. This creates a clean, modern style that still feels festive and expresses the homeowner’s own personality and style.
When people come over to Bridget’s home, they’re usually surprised at how simple her Christmas decorations are compared to the extravagance of the store. “We start so early here I see it every day so at home it’s simple,” explains Bridget. Decorating might not be Bridget’s favorite Christmas tradition, but spending time with her kids and husband “when it’s snowy and we make cookies,” is.

Bridget has some practical suggestions for keeping holiday decorations minimalistic and clutter free.
1
SIMPLIFY “I tell my clients, if they have a large vase or container, to take things out, don’t just add more.”
2

CHOOSE AN AREA “If you choose one color, like a little bit of the berry color, put in a couple strands, so it’s not berries all over the house.”
4
UTILIZE A FOCAL PIECE “Whether it’s the fireplace accent wall or mantel, pick a focal piece. I have a beautiful 14-foot dry stack stone on my fireplace. That could really be my focus for decorations and catch the eye when people walk in to the room.” w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

D’Arcie Malsam and Barbara Weekes are interior designers at Stella’s Boutique in downtown Bismarck. Even though they start getting holiday decor in July, they still love the Christmas season. “Once we start decorating, it’s still absolutely my favorite,” says Malsam. “It brings some life into the winter with all the twinkling lights,” agrees Weekes. And last Christmas, during the Holiday Home Walk, they decorated a beautiful modern farmhouse for the holidays.

While the whole house was charming, the duo’s favorite part of the home to decorate was the living room. “I love Christmas trees and the twinkling lights and that glow that they create,” explains Malsam, “It felt like a home a family would live in.” The fireplace, cozy pillows, and open floor plan created an atmosphere you could spend all day in. The kitchen opens directly into the dining room and living room. The open floor plan connects different family and friends in various parts of the home. And since being with family is an important part of the holidays, it is perfect that the whole main floor felt like Glasser Images

The mix of more traditional decorations like a Christmas tree with ornaments and red berries along with more vintage dĂŠcor like the reindeer or the wooden candle sticks created an eclectic style throughout the home. The Christmas tree was more traditional with the red accents, ornaments, and the lights. A unique feature of the tree was the cute little hat perched on top. The vintage reindeer and wood tastefully placed throughout the home stayed true to the classy farmhouse style.
Malsam and Weekes can’t wait for Christmas again this year and the opportunity to continue to spread the spirit of the season through their work. Here they share some useful tips and tricks for anyone looking for help decorating for Christmas.

THE BUILDER’S PERSPECTIVE Stoneshire Builders, the builders of this home, agree that this house is perfect for holiday hosting. When asked what his favorite part of the home was, Brian Eiseman, owner of Stoneshire Builders, immediately responded, “The kitchen. The large windows allow for an abundance of natural light. Combine that with the reclaimed wood beams, fireplace, and gray toned wood floors makes for a very cozy gathering area.”
The kitchen doesn’t just feel aesthetically pleasing. The functionality was well thought out, too. A double sink, double ovens, and quartz countertops complete with a large, walk-in pantry complete this gourmet kitchen. It’s ideal for all the baking one could do throughout the holiday season. “The kitchen is the perfect space for entertaining. There’s ample space and the double oven and gas cooktop allow for multiple dishes to be prepared simultaneously,” says Brian.

Located in Bismarck in the Eagle Crest 6th subdivision, the home boasts 4,333 square feet. With three levels, five bedrooms, and a spacious garage, this home has plenty of space for family and friends. The kitchen, dining room, and living room have plenty of room for family gatherings. A fireplace completes the cozy open floor plan. But, “if some family want a little more privacy from the crowd, they could go to the upper floor loft or the lower level which has a TV viewing area and a game area,” Brian points out. There is a whole home audio system wired throughout the house too, meaning Christmas music for all to enjoy. With its combination of technology, appliances, and homey interior, this house truly has something for everyone.

That’s a wrap! Story: Karel Sovak
For most people, it’s what’s inside that is most important. But if you think about it, it’s called a present because of the presentation. For those who take all those painstaking moments to dedicate themselves to the art and science of wrapping, this article is for you. Sure, you can pay someone to do it for you, in fact, the Optimists Club generally does a good job for a fair price; however, there is something about a DIY hand touch finish that makes you feel proud. One of the best tips comes a trusted source, Martha Stewart. According to her website (www.marthastewart.com), one good tip to wrapping precision that will get noticed is to wrap the presents as you buy them. If you wait until a certain time and have a mountain of gifts to wrap, creative fatigue will step in and cause the latter ones to be less than your perfect technique. Another tip Stewart provides is to make sure you have your wrapping supplies handy and a special place that you can dedicate to your wrapping. If you don’t store your paper, tissue and cards in an appropriate way, you will find paper gets crinkled and ribbons get crushed. A great tip is to make sure you invest in an inexpensive T square, which will 56

COLOR MOVES US Colors impact our feelings and mental states. The colors we choose communicate a message. During the holiday season, individuals and advertisers utilize colors to connect with the season. Thanksgiving often emphasizes oranges and browns. Christmas primarily connects with reds and greens, along with multitudes of multi colored lights.

COLOR PREFERENCE IS PERSONAL When clients request assistance with color selection, I’ll ask questions to understand the purpose for their area. Is the purpose to be a creative space, a healing room, a place to relax or unwind, or a setting for social events? My goal is to match what they intend to feel when they enter the room with a color they naturally gravitate towards and enjoy. Generally there are two main categories of colors; warm and cool. Cool colors – like green, blue and purple – communicate feelings of calmness, relaxation and serenity. Warm colors – like red, yellow and orange – communicate a variety of emotions including comfort, warmth,
and passion. COMMUNICATING YOUR MESSAGE WITH COLOR Green and Blue – create a peaceful, restful and calming environment ideal for bedrooms. Science shows that the eye focuses the color green directly on the retina, resulting in less strain on your eye muscles. Purple – have a creative focus? Purple is comprised of both red and blue to provide a pleasant balance between stimulation and peacefulness that is said to stimulate creativity. Light Purple – encourages a peaceful serene surrounding, often relieves tension. Orange and Yellow – give a sense
grays have an undertone, most commonly blue, green, or taupe. There are very few “true grays” that don’t have an undertone which is often amplified by lighting and decor.
Red and Pink – associated with romance, comfort, and gentleness. Red can also communicate intensity; red accents can set off incredible contrasts and are utilized frequently in restaurants to increase hunger and appetite.
Whether you are selecting a fresh wall color for your home, a new color scheme for your business presentation, or your next outfit; use the power of color to communicate your message and inspire feelings in those who observe your color choice.
White – increases the overall sense of space, purity and a feeling of cleanliness.

Gray – neutrality, timelessness, and practicality. Be aware that most

of warmth, reflect more light and stimulate a person’s eyes. Yellow may stir feelings of hunger and happiness. Orange often energizes and excites. They make great accent walls when a splash of color is desired.
