For Jordan and Kari, functionality was a critical aspect of their building plans. “We really tried to think of our lifestyle, think of what would make day to day life easier, all those sorts of things,” explains Jordan. The home’s layout was designed around the garage and outdoor space. Everything else was built around these spaces. “We like our homes to be unique,” says Jordan.

The whole home is family friendly with lots of details orientated to making life easier for a young family. Spending time in her new kitchen cooking for the holidays is something Kari is definitely looking forward to. “I’m excited to bake in this kitchen,” says Kari. “It’s clearly a chef ’s kitchen.” Her favorite part of the home however, is the dining room. “What I had in my brain is what was executed,” she explains. The inviting dining room is perfect for hosting get-togethers with friends and family.

One of the most unique features of the home is its East Coast style. “I’ve always wanted to do a home with East Coast inspiration and vibes. It’s been my personal style that I’ve liked forever.” The light and airy feel complemented by natural wood ties together the entire home. In the kitchen, the white cabinets and natural white oak china hutch enhance the kitchen island’s unique color. “The color I chose for the kitchen island changes throughout the day. Sometimes at night it looks white, in the morning it looks blue, in the middle of the afternoon it looks grey,” describes Kari. “It’s just a perfect kind of light blue-grey.” The Anderson’s home is flooded with natural light thanks to the many large windows. As winter sets in, Jordan says he is looking forward to the wintry views outside: “It’s a beautiful area. Just the scenery, and the snow, and the water.” In the living room, the floor to ceiling windows mimic the look of double French doors while pouring in sunlight. The built-in shelves are an additional focal piece with their undertone of blue tying together the East Coast theme. This holiday season, Kari and Jordan are most looking forward to spending time as a family at their new home. They plan on spending Christmas morning at their home before celebrating with the rest of their family. They will not be the ones hosting however. Big River Builders built Kari’s parents and Jordan’s parents their dream homes, and now they insist on hosting for everyone on Christmas. These pictures only feature parts of the Anderson’s stunning home, and many of Jordan’s favorite parts were not even photographed for this issue. If you are interested in viewing the rest of the house, it will be in the spring Parade of Homes at the end of April.

MEET THE DESIGNER For the holidays, Real Deals on Home Decor owner Rachel Miller decorated Kari and Jordan’s new home in the Christmas spirit. “Kari and Jordan’s house was beyond gorgeous,” said Rachel. “It was a very fun house to get to decorate.” Her decorations around the new home fill it with Christmas merriment. Since the color palette of the Anderson’s home is light with whites, natural wood, and gold accents, Rachel wanted to enhance this with her decor. “I wanted to be sure I complemented all that, so that’s why I chose more whites, creams, and golds,” explains Rachel. “I did want to have a pop of something in the main living area, but not super traditional, while keeping it softer so I could stay with that light palette. I chose a sea foam green just to complement with that white and gold.” Upstairs, Rachel kept the decor more traditional for the boys since this is where they spend much of their time. In the living room, there are red and green accents, plush gnomes, and cute snowmen. “Just more colorful fun pieces that the Anderson boys could get 18

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2020 - January 2021

excited about,” says Rachel. The Christmas tree in the art area is also decorated in the same theme of traditional red and green Christmas, tying the adjacent spaces together. Rachel first opened Real Deals in 2008 with her sister. “She actually lived in Colorado and there was a Real Deals there and she fell in love with it… It was her idea that we should start up a home decor store when we came back to North Dakota because there was nothing like it here,” tells Rachel. The two sisters went ahead with their plan and opened a new Real Deals in Bismarck. What is special about Real Deals is the uniqueness of the pieces they carry. Rachel travels to different cities across the United States searching for unique pieces to bring back to Bismarck. In an effort to keep everything they sell special, nothing is stocked in great quantities. This way, your piece is unlikely to be found in your neighbor’s home. Rachel also strives to carry a variety of decor that covers a wide range of styles, all at a reasonable price. If you want someone to help decorate your home, Rachel does take on house calls and consulting. She can also come decorate your home for the holidays, but as this is the busiest time of the year for her, she prefers a couple months’ notice. Since her expertise is on decor, she only gives advice on decorating, and there are a couple different ways to go about this. Rachel can load up a U-Haul and bring a variety of options over to your home so you can see them in your own space and lighting. The other way she can help is if you bring pictures of the room you need advice on. Rachel’s advice to all her clients is to find what they love. “Our goal is always that when the homeowner walks in the space, it makes them smile over and over again,” explains Rachel. The best thing about Christmas decor is the flexibility. There are a variety of ways to go about it and none of them are wrong! So whether you love the traditional style or want a more subtle theme, your holiday decorations should be something that fills you with cheer. After all, Christmas is the “happiest season of all.” w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

MAKING A LIST AND CHECKING IT TWICE Building a home can be an overwhelming labor of love with seemingly endless choices of finishes, paint colors, and furnishings. But Kira was prepared for the daunting task. She had a good idea of what she wanted all thanks to an Excel spreadsheet. “For the past few years I kept a spreadsheet, and I would type in notes on what I’d like in a house one day,” Kira explains, “So when it came time to build a house I took it out and was like this is what we need. I knew exactly what I should be doing. My husband was overwhelmed that I kept a spreadsheet like that, but it worked out perfectly.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR It wasn’t just her own ideas that Kira kept track of in her spreadsheet. She had input from everyone around her, too. “I would listen to people; I have a lot of friends with kids and they would share with me a few pieces that they wish they had in their home. My parents would tell me things, my sisters-in-law would, and I just kept track,” Kira says. Kira listened to input from just about everyone around her; her dad’s influence can be seen in the bench in the breakfast nook and her sister suggested the color for the kitchen cabinets. Family is important to Kira and she has small reminders of their legacy throughout her home. Paintings from her great-grandmother and various pieces passed down from generation to generation add to the vintage modern feel of the home and add extra meaning to each room.

24

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2020 - January 2021

HERE WE ARE AS IN OLDEN DAYS…WITH A MODERN TWIST Kira’s home style, while modern in amenities and color throughout, is a nod to the past. The solid wood trim and millwork are intricate in design and give the home a cozy feel. Jay Wickline, owner of Interior Finish and Remodel, LLC, did the bulk of the millwork in the home. A finish carpenter by trade, Jay has been doing this his whole life. “It’s a passion rather than a trade and I turned it into a business,” Jay explains. The millwork in the Noll’s home is something spectacular that you don’t see every day. “It’s a mix of a modern home with an antique-y feel,” Jay says. “There’s not a huge market for this type of millwork package and just being involved in it and showing people that this option is available, and we can do this type of intricate work is good.” Kira has her touch on every room of the house, including the floor plan. She found it on houseplans.com and then took a gel pen to the house plan and made it their own. “Every inch of this house I basically drew out or had something to do with,” says Kira. Each room has a little bit of old design mixed with new and that’s what makes the Noll’s home so special. w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

25

A COZY RETREAT The light and airy master suite includes a walk-out deck, a fireplace, his and hers walkin closets, and a beautiful bathroom complete with a classic, clawfoot soaker tub. One thoughtful feature of the master floorplan is the bump out. “This house plan was a Colonial house plan…so there was only one bedroom on the main floor,” Kira explains. “I love that but if we’re going to have one bedroom on the main floor, we don’t have a family yet and at some point we will, I wanted to cut out a little space to put a bassinet in.” For now, the bump out works perfectly as a sitting room.

27

For her closet, Kira wanted a specific feel, “I’ve read through some magazines and books that in order to keep a closet organized to think of it as a clothing store.” Her bags and shoes are lit up and all the clothes are out front where she can see all of them instead of having them hidden away in drawers. Greg’s closet is very masculine with wood tones and has a washer and dryer. “He loves washers and dryers. He does a lot of laundry and I don’t so he wanted to make sure he had laundry in his space,” Kira says.

LIVING ROOM The living room, located across from the kitchen, is striking with its traditional fireplace surrounded by up lit cabinets. “I love big mantels so I wanted to make sure I had a really big mantel that I could put a ton of stuff on or just decorate through every season so it always changes,” Kira explains. Personal touches like the antique mirror from a friend used in the Noll’s wedding and a piece from Kira’s great-grandmother add coziness. Coffered ceilings and large windows overlooking the hill where Kira used to play add to the room’s appeal. 30

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2020 - January 2021

“Especially for Christmas, less is more sometimes. Everybody thinks they have to deck the halls like the song says, but simplicity can really be the best tip for decorating. You don’t have to have every single place filled. Start small and add as you like,” Teal Wold, owner of Mabes Flower Market

w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

31

KITCHEN The dramatic navy kitchen is separated from the living room by small walls that Kira prefers. “We went back and forth because these walls were not actually here in the plan. It’s not for me to have a totally open space, I wanted a few little walls with some crown molding just so it separates each room,” explains Kira. The kitchen’s navy cabinets were a compromise between Kira and Greg reached with help from Kira’s sister. “I wanted white and my husband wanted dark wood, so we met in the middle with blue. My sister talked me into this color. She loves a navy kitchen,” Kira says. And the Noll’s agree, “Both Greg and I really love it.” The tile accent is a nod to Kira’s background. “She has a Scandinavian background, and she thought the tile looked a little bit Scandinavian. We added a special feature behind the floating shelves so that it ties into the floor in the specialty pantry,” explains Angela Smith, from Tranquil Concepts Design and Décor. Angela worked with the Nolls on the interior design of their home.

“It’s an art, it definitely is because there are a lot of different obstacles you face as a finisher but you have to make it work so that the end result is what everyone is looking for” Jay Wickline, owner of Interior Finish and Remodel, LLC

The prep pantry is a cool little area perfect for prepping for a party. “I don’t like when food and everything is out for everyone to see. I definitely want it to be put away so I could do a charcuterie board inside without cutting the cheese in front of guests,” explains Kira. The pantry has all of the amenities of a larger scale kitchen, including the adorable SMEG refrigerator. 34

KEEPING ROOM/LIBRARY When you enter the Noll’s home your eye will immediately be drawn to the grand staircase. But before you can marvel at the curved beauty, you’ll want to stop in keeping room/library to take off your coat and enjoy a drink by the fire. A room rarely seen in homes these days, the keeping room was a must for Kira and stays true to her love of times gone by. Vintage décor and books passed down from generations add charm and beauty to the unique room.

LOWER LEVEL The Noll’s lower level is outfitted with modern amenities. A UND green barroom is a nod to college, where the couple met. Greg’s office, a golf simulator that doubles as a movie theater, a family room, and a gym with a spray tan area ensure that there’s always fun to be had. “I didn’t want it to feel like a basement,” Kira explains, “I hate going to basements that are dark and gloomy and tired.” The Noll’s is anything but. Kira’s office, also on the lower level, may have one of the most special pieces in the home… her wedding dress. “I wanted to make it look like an art piece. I thought it would be nice to sit in here and have this display to take me back to my wedding day,” Kira says. Kira’s style flows through the Noll’s entire home in a cool, effortless way. No matter the season the gorgeous wood, the hint of modern that blends effortlessly with the classic, and the gorgeous colors combine to create a stunning example of a modern Craftsman home.

MEET THE DECORATOR When Kira and Greg Noll began the building process, they knew to create the perfect home they needed to enlist the expertise of Interior Decorator Angela Smith from Tranquil Concepts Design and Décor. Angela has owned and operated Tranquil Concepts since 2009. In the Noll’s home Angela worked closely with Kira to develop a design that would enhance the beautiful wood and trim package throughout the Craftsman style home. “We started out with the flooring and we built off of that with the color palette, and went right from cabinetry, to paint, to tile, and wallpaper,” Angela explains. Color played a significant role in the Noll’s home and incorporating a common color palette allowed Angela to marry the traditional and modern styles Kira wanted in each space. “We try to always bring color back into different areas of the house,” Angela explains. “We wanted it to be a cheerful, welcoming place so bringing in the light soft paints along with the whites really helped finish it off.” The process of building a home, especially a forever home, can be overwhelming but 42

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | December 2020 - January 2021

working with a designer like Angela can eliminate stress and help in making decisions that will make you happy for a long, long time. “It’s best to get a designer involved from the beginning so you have a middle person that will work with the contractor and also work with the client,” Angela explains, “We can take some of that anxiety away and put it on us because we’re used to working with contractors.” Another advantage to working with a designer is that they are paying attention to trends. “We’re paying attention to materials and products that are worth putting into homes and those things that aren’t working in homes,” Angela says. Between this and acting as the go between with contractors, designers can save you a lot of time and money. “Typically with an interior decorator or interior designer there are fewer change orders because that jargon back and forth is kind of resolved.” “We help clients put dreams into motion and work with contractors to make our client’s dreams come true,” Angela says.

The remodel did not end there however, and the Bosch’s also added a mini bar area. The bar fit in perfectly thanks to the newly expanded space. The white birch cabinets in the kitchen reflect the clean, contemporary style of the home and complement the white island. The mix of metals and softer contrast between dark and light colors in the home was an intentional decision. “I like the intermingling of the metal colors,” says Troy, “and the intermingling of browns, greys, and blacks, rather than the stark black-white.”

This holiday season, the Bosch’s can be found hosting Christmas gatherings in their newly remodeled space. “Usually my family comes on a separate day. We usually try to do a brunch and have at least 20-25 people here,” describes Jodi.

MEET THE DESIGNER While most of us are finally getting into the Christmas spirit, for Tara Laber, owner of 3rd Avenue Floral & Greenhouse and Salt Kitchen & Co, Christmas is a year-round event. “We bought all this stuff in January, and we have had Christmas stuff coming in since June,” says Tara. Despite having done this for over 15 years, Tara still loves the holiday with just one exception, “I hate red, because then we have Valentine’s Day too.” However, this has not put a damper on Tara’s holiday joy, “I love the changing of every season, because you get a whole other set of fresh flowers and new greens that you’re using, so it’s always like a refreshment.” 3rd Avenue Floral’s most popular product over the holidays is their outdoor potted plants. With a variety of styles, Tara’s customers can always get a unique outdoor plant, whether they want spruce, pine, fir, or a different kind of evergreen. Tara enjoys decorating these outdoor pots with berries, twigs, birch, and pine cones since they look festive but can withstand the harsh winter weather. Other kinds of holiday greenery available are Christmas trees and festive centerpieces for tables, islands, and mantels. 52

“My favorite part is getting everything set up, and having people come in and find the perfect thing that they’ve been looking for forever,” describes Tara. Additionally, the store features many cute holiday gifts and decor, making it a one-stop shop for the holidays. In the Bosch’s newly remodeled home, Tara decorated simplistically, reflecting their minimalistic tastes. The decor is a balance between the contemporary design of the home and the festive touches Tara chose. Her choices reflect the clean style the Bosch’s prefer while incorporating a holiday warmth to the home. While decorating, Tara also kept in mind their taste for metallic accents and brought in soft golds and silvers. Throughout this process, Tara included some of the Bosch’s older holiday decor along with some newer pieces, a decision that parallels the overall home’s style of glam farmhouse. The finished home feels merry and bright, just in time for the holidays.

The winters of the Northern Great Plains hold many meteorological records for amounts of snow, length, and of course the deep freezes that even today we struggle to find the strength to tackle for weeks on end. We sometimes question why we choose to endure these crazy winters and those that don’t live here also question that sanity but also admire that strength to continue through the toughest that Mother Nature can give us.
