or the Grain Bin guest house at Sunset Ranch, the views looking inside are as spectacular as the views looking out. Designer Missy Brademeyer of Couture Line of Design and remodeler Matt Zacher of Zacher Remodeling and
Construction collaborated to create this unique, modern living space east of Bismarck. While a grain bin may seem an odd choice for a home, this uniquely shaped structure was the perfect challenge for Matt and Missy. Together their attention to detail and creative approach brought new life to the utilitarian building. With breathtaking views of North Dakota sunsets and a contemporary but inviting interior, the Grain Bin guest home is a place you won’t forget. w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

As you move through the Grain Bin, you’ll notice the light fixtures, and Missy wanted it that way. “I wanted the fixtures to be pieces of art,” she explains. The bedrooms on the main floor are designed with masculine and feminine themes. Throughout the home are small touches that remind guests just how special a space it is. These include an inspiration wall, seamless door jambs, and a nook with a cozy, hanging chair.

This man cave is anything but your average entertainment area. A large garage door made entirely of glass windows allows natural light to flood the space. The functional garage door can be opened to a patio, complete with a fire pit, creating the perfect indoor/outdoor space. “The door in between the house and the party room was one of the biggest challenges of the project. It had to be shipped from Florida,” Glasser Images

Another unique feature of this man cave is the staircase connecting the main area to the lofted game space. “The staircase was challenging because of placement, cutting trusses, and moving HVAC, but it turned out great. It doesn’t take up too much space and it fits nicely with where the window is,” explains Greg. The lofted area is the perfect space for games like ping pong, air hockey, and foosball and keeps those games contained.

Small touches like the railing in the loft mimicking the deck railing and the concrete floor being cut to mirror the adjacent kitchen tile make the transition from main house to man cave seamless. A two-sided fireplace from an office building the homeowner’s parents had adds yet another unique touch to the space. When asked about a favorite part of the space the homeowner explains that the whole room is their favorite, “We love using it all the time. It’s nice because it’s right off the kitchen. We have an entertaining space downstairs, but we have yet to entertain down there.”

When Andrew Meldahl, owner of Pinnacle Homes and the homeowner collaborated to create this man cave, they knew above the garage was the perfect spot. “We used the space above the garage because we didn’t want to waste space. It’s functional and we used all the space we could,” explains Andrew. The ceiling was bumped up and finished with wood from Aitken, MN and the truss layout naturally created different sections to the room. The galvanized tin on the walls was Glasser Images used to replicate the roadhouse bar feel. While the window dormers created challenges, they also ended up creating the perfect nooks for games and a table and chairs.

WHAT RON STOTZ, OWNER OF CAVES HAS BEEN SEEING A LOT OF IS PEOPLE DESIGNING THEIR CAVES IN SECTIONS OF THREE. A LOWER AREA WITH THE THEATER AREA, TRANSITIONING TO THE GAME AREA, THEN INTO A BAR. THIS SPACE IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS CONCEPT.
The homeowner’s favorite part of the space is that it is functional for both adults and kids. “The long design of the room allows people to be in one end watching a game and in the other end doing something else,” explains the homeowner, “and, the sound system is really good so if everyone wants to watch or hear they game they can.”

While the room is technically done the homeowners will continue to add to and adjust the décor. “We’re still adding to it, we’ve got UND memorabilia and a collage from years of motorcycle trips. We’ll keep adding more stuff,” smiles the homeowner.

SIZZLIN’ CHEDDAR BACON POTATO WEDGES What you Need: • 3-4 large russet potatoes • olive oil • salt and pepper • cumin • chili powder • shredded cheddar cheese • 8 slices of bacon Directions: Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Step 1: Wash and cut potatoes into thin slices (no bigger than a ¼ inch thick) Step 2: In a small bowl, combine a ½ teaspoon of salt and pepper, ¼ teaspoon chili powder and ¼ teaspoon of cumin. Step 3: Place potatoes on a baking sheet spread apart (not stacked on top of each other) then drizzle olive oil on the potatoes (make sure the wedges are not too wet). Then take the mixed spices from step two and sprinkle over the wedges. Step 4: Put the pan in the oven and let cook for 20-30 minutes or until crispy. Step 5: While wedges are baking, fry the bacon in a pan on medium heat, until fully crispy. Once the bacon has cooled chop into bits. Step 6: Once the wedges are crispy and done baking take out of the oven and cover with cheddar cheese and bacon bits. Then place back into the oven for 3-6 minutes (or until cheese is fully melted). Step 7: Take out of the oven and serve with sour cream or spicy, homemade ranch from the next page. 52

Recently I was with a client who had purchased a new home. There were areas that needed paint touch-ups. I asked if she had the original paint used on the walls. We looked through the paint left by the previous owners but couldn’t locate the color. Maybe you have been in this situation before. Touching up paint can be very difficult especially if you have to figure out a color match. What do you do? I’ve listed some steps I took and tips on color matching and touch-up application. In the end, my customer was very happy with the results. I hope these tips help you get great results as well.
