RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | June-July 2018

P

icture your dream weekend beginning by seeing the mountains gradually reveal

themselves as you come down from Billings, MT on Highway 212 into the Town of Red Lodge. When you pull up to The Glen, all it takes is a deep breath, a mountain view, and you’re instantly relaxed. The Glen offers expansive views of the Bear Tooth Mountain Range situated right on the Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course, proving that there is something for everyone in Red Lodge during both winter and summer. Whatever the season, you can get up in the morning and take in the view of the mountains and feel refreshed. The typical renter of The Glen is not only someone that has a passion for the outdoors, but anyone looking for a getaway. The Glen sleeps 12 comfortably and has two suites that make the property ideal for families. The Glen is big enough to accommodate a wedding party but provides enough privacy to allow everyone their own space. Red Lodge is called the “Gateway to the Yellowstone” so the location is perfect for anyone looking to w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

experience the majesty of the Rocky Mountain Range. Whether you are a seasoned downhill skier, novice hiker, or looking for a weekend in the mountains, The Glen has what you are looking for. The stunning 1,800 square foot lodge has a great room, featuring 30-foot ceilings and a river-stone fireplace. The expansive windows give you a spectacular view of the mountains. You can enjoy a glass of wine while relaxing in your hot tub (or jacuzzi or in your walk-in shower) after a long day of hiking, snowboarding, or shopping in downtown Red Lodge. Mornings at Red Lodge are breathtaking. There is nothing more satisfying than getting out of bed and waking up to the views of Lazy M Ski Run at Red Lodge Ski Mountain. Grabbing a cup of Red Lodge blend from the Red Lodge Coffee Roasters and sitting outside and soaking in that view makes for the perfect morning. The experience doesn’t stop at The Glen. Red Lodge amenities are diverse with gift shops, the museum, grocery store, coffee 12

ooking for a quiet, relaxing place to get away from a stressful work life, Kurt and

Judy Steiner relied on their past experiences on Lake Sakakawea. “We always liked Sakakawea, it was always our favorite,” explains Kurt. “I grew up camping and when our girls were young we camped all the time.” The Steiner family began trekking to Lake Sakakawea with a camper and pulling a boat. Now, they spend their weekends enjoying life on the third largest lake in the United States from their Montana inspired cabin. “We found a design that was perfect for the layout as far as the views of the lake, but we didn’t like the roof lines of it,” says Kurt. The Steiner’s called on a builder friend from Bozeman to help them redesign the roof line to mimic high end houses being built in Big Sky. “We wanted something that looked like it belonged in the mountains,” explains Kurt.

w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

19

The timber framing is the biggest element of design contributing to the mountain house feel. “On the inside all of these timbers are actually real; they are supporting load,” Kurt explains, “on the outside we have larger overhangs because in the mountains they do that.” Choosing where to build was tricky. The Steiner’s wanted something closer to the water but because Lake Sakakawea is controlled by the US Army Corp of Engineers that wasn’t possible with a new build. Kurt and Judy picked a new development so they could choose where they wanted the house to be. “The downside is we don’t have big trees, but the nice thing is we have great access to the water and docks,” Kurt says. Access to the water and the docks is important to the Steiner’s. Fishing and floating are their favorite activities on the weekends.

“We found a design that was perfect for the layout as far as the views of the lake...

“We have four grandkids now and when the grandkids are here we are on the pontoon floating on the lake. That’s what we like about Sakakawea, it’s huge. You can spend all day and go one hundred miles if you want,” Kurt says. The Steiner’s know the importance of an indoor space with outdoor access on Sakakawea. “There are some days that the weather is not the greatest and it’s real windy.” Having an East facing room with a garage door is perfect to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and to stay protected from the elements. On nice evenings, the Steiner’s can be found around the custom firepit roasting marshmallows with their grandkids. While the four-bedroom home has incredible views of Lake Sakakawea, the interior decor provides wildlife trophy mounts, a beautiful custom wrought iron staircase, got items from a favorite bar in Cook City. There is even

a wall-mounted canoe that the Steiner’s purchased from a Ground Round remodel. Judy’s favorite part of the Lake Sakakawea getaway is “Relaxing and getting away from everything back home and having the family and grandkids up here because they really enjoy it.” Kurt enjoys the fishing and “hanging out with family.” The Lake Sakakawea getaway is not only a welcome retreat for Kurt and Judy but their family as well. Their daughter Kristyn Steckler shares her favorite part, “I love the evenings (that can sometimes turn into mornings) around the bonfire on the back patio when my grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, cousins & their families all join us to roast lil’ smokies and marshmallows!”

hat do outlaws, spies, pheasants, and weddings have in common? Take a

30-minute trip east out of Bismarck and you’ll find all four and so much more at Black Leg Ranch south of McKenzie. A working cattle ranch homesteaded in 1882, Black Leg Ranch is owned and operated by the Doan Family. The Doan’s were some of the first ranchers to bring Black Angus cattle to the region. “People would call the party line and complain that the black legged cattle were out,” explains Jay Doan. “When we legally had to name the ranch greatgrandfather said everyone knows us as Black Leg Ranch so even though black leg is a major cattle disease that became the official name.” What started as 160 acres, the now 17,000 acre ranch is rich with history. The Doan family were originally British Loyalists and worked as spies. After fleeing to Canada for a brief period the Doan’s returned and began cattle ranching in Dakota Territory. w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

Today, the fifth generation Doan’s, Jay, his two brothers and sister, run Black Leg Ranch and its sister companies. Black Leg Ranch partners with farmers on 3,000 acres of cropland, which allows them to guide crop rotations, no-till practices and cover crops, while also providing residue for cattle forage. Across the approximately 14,000 acres of grazing land, close attention is paid to soil health, which generates greater forage production, limits erosion and reduced costs. The ranch has also implemented an intensive grazing program after installing more than 65 miles of high-tensile fence to create 90 pastures, allowing them to move cattle to new grass regularly to closely mimic the natural grazing behavior of the bison herds that once roamed the Plains. The siblings have worked hard to honor and preserve their family history and are quickly making their own. The eldest brother, Jeremy, started Rolling Plains Adventures. The

pheasant, waterfoul, and deer hunting operation is well known throughout the United States and in 2008, Black Leg Ranch was taken international. The original ranch houses were converted for guest accommodations. “We’ve hosted 40 different countries to the ranch now and our foot traffic is around 10,000 people annually. This includes weddings, corporate events, ranch stays and educational tours,” says Jay. The steadily increasing foot traffic gave way to the renovation of an original cattle feed barn now known as Copper Jewell barn. Named after grandpa and great grandpa Jewell Doan, the copper accents on the exterior the Copper Jewell barn is a 13,000 square foot facility that includes a twostory saloon, arcade and space for weddings and events. “We started doing weddings in 2013 and it has just grown from there,” says Jay. “Our most popular package is the two-day, two-night

weekend signature package.” Jay’s sister Shanda is the event director coordinating weddings and events held at the ranch. Drawing from corporate experience in the beer industry, Jay is adding a 15 barrel, fully automated brew house to the ranch. “The brew house will be here in June and the rest of the equipment will come in July,” explains Jay. “We are going full circle sustainability taking the barley, making the beer, using the spent grain and feeding a select number of cattle.” Jay plans to pair the barley fed beef with the aptly named Black Leg Brewery’s beer. The Doan’s have plans to diversify even further by planting 12 varietals and super fruits to begin making their own in-house wine. Black Leg Ranch is a welcoming and fascinating part of North Dakota’s history. Jay and his siblings are making sure Black Leg Ranch is an important part of it’s future as well.

KAY’S BED & BREAKFAST story: Jennifer Kranz | photos: Glasser Images

ith Jazz music playing in the background and her mother’s

artwork displayed on the walls, Kay Solberg-Link shares the story of how Kay’s Bed and Breakfast began. “You know how things kind of come together?” Kay had returned to Bismarck to restore and sell her parent’s home and found out that the bed and breakfast, just a block away, was on the market.

An active member of Bismarck’s Heritage Center, Kay had been traveling back and forth from the Cities to be a part of the Center’s expansion committees. When she found out the bed and breakfast was for sale, she knew she could come back to Bismarck, take the time needed to restore and sell her parent’s home and offer hospitality to the Bismarck community by way of the bed and breakfast. “I told my family and friends I’ll be back in maybe three years if I can get w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com

the house restored and sold and, in the meantime, I’ll have a job. I had guests literally the day I signed the papers.”

The two-guestroom property welcomes guests from all over the world. “The world is coming to me,” Kay explains. “People visit from all over the world-Germany, Denmark, South Africa and Scandinavian countries. They read about Lewis and Clark and want to stand on that ground.” The bed and breakfast houses all the guest artists for the Bismarck Symphony and some of them have become Kay’s dear friends. “People who stay at bed and breakfasts want to experience the local culture.”

It’s not just international guests that appreciate the quiet, homey feel of Kay’s Bed and Breakfast. “It’s a home. It’s warm and welcoming with comfortable beds and it’s quiet. People want an experience.” 36

Whether it’s a wedding night, anniversary or any other special occasion, Solberg-Link takes special care of her guests. “I do flowers and of course all my guests get chocolate dipped strawberries when they come home from dinner at night.” Flowers, wine and tea, and the occasional late-night sandwich and soup are touches of home that add to the bed and breakfast’s guest experience.

While Kay’s personal touches set the bed and breakfast apart from your typical hotel experience it is the art gallery that makes the bed and breakfast a must visit destination in Bismarck.

When Kay first saw the interior, she could imagine the basement as a gallery. By adding carpeting and strip lighting she created the backdrop for the gallery. “I had lots of bare walls to work with in the upper part of the house and I 38

Kay has made Bismarck home, and has created not only a career of hospitality, but a lifestyle. Every Thursday, Kay volunteers at Ministry on the Margins, serving those who are less fortunate. This past winter she even opened her home to a homeless man to help him escape the bitter cold. Kay believes in serving not only her guests, but those in the community as well.

Kay has been running the bed and breakfast for 13 years. She no longer has plans to leave Bismarck and when asked about the future she responds, “I see myself doing this for the rest of my life.”

hen River + Ranch Magazine asked me to write this article,

I was ecstatic! Even though it feels like I’m spilling a secret or like I am sharing my grandma’s coveted meatball recipe, I think it is time that people found out about the beautiful place my family has called home for over four generations. East of Bismarck about 170 miles, nestled in the rolling hills of the Sheyenne River Valley in Southeast North Dakota, lies the small town of Fort Ransom. With a population of less than 100, this tiny hamlet offers countless recreational as well as historical tourism opportunities for adventurers and tourists alike. An easy trip from Bismarck – just head east on I-94 and take the Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway – Fort Ransom can be a quick getaway from the city. Once you’ve made it, a great place to start is at the Fort Ransom State Park (FRSP). FRSP is a 950-acre natural and scenic area that pays homage to the homesteading

roots of the region. At the Sunne farmstead, located in the park, you can go back in time to catch a glimpse of the life of a Norwegian homesteader, circa 1885. During Sodbuster Days (always held the second full weekend in July, as well as the weekend after Labor Day) visitors can peruse displays of antique machinery, watch demonstrations of horsedrawn fieldwork, and watch as the reenactors share their farm cooking techniques. There are almost 20 miles of trails throughout the park that lead through the Sheyenne State Forest, past North Dakota’s only waterfall, and into sprawling valleys filled with wild grasses and flowers. Each trail can be used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and in the winter cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The park also offers kayak and canoe rentals to spend the day paddling down the river. Once you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, you can head back into town for some welldeserved dinner and drinks. The road from the park to downtown is short and beautiful. 46

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | June-July 2018

It winds past the Viking on the hill, a statue erected in 1972 that has become a staple of the community. Fort Ransom also hosts a brand-new restaurant, The Lunchbox Eatery, where locals and tourists can enjoy creative dishes such as smoked corned beef poutine and lobster mac in a laid back, rustic atmosphere. If it is a bar you seek, then Thor’s is your spot. This local watering hole is always filled with characters and has live music throughout the year. Both establishments offer a taste of how welcoming rural North Dakotans truly are. Festivals like the Norwegian Independence Day, or Synttede Mai, and the Sheyenne Valley Arts and Crafts Fair bring people in from all around the region to celebrate their shared heritage. Whether you are an avid outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone with a free day and a full tank of gas, I guarantee there will be something for you in Fort Ransom.

We’re following the Anderson family through their new build over the next few issues. From beginning to end, here’s an exclusive look into what it takes to build a dream home.

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | FOUNDATION TO FINISH

I

n our first two issues of River and Ranch, our readers were introduced to Big River Builders owners Jordan and Kari Anderson. These first

issues gave our readers an introduction to the couple, their focus on family and quality, custom work, and their ongoing project of building their family home, which will serve as an office and model house for Big River Builders. In the last issue, they were just finishing up with the framing of the house. Read on to find out what Jordan and Kari have been up to since then!

The building process is now “in the homestretch.” Over the past few months, insulation, sheetrock, texture, and paint have all been applied. Jordan said that, “it is finally getting to be time for my crew to go in and do all of the finish work.” Much of the finish work involves planning that Kari has done to include details in the home that match the Hampton’s vibe they are aiming for. “[It] is a cool relaxed kind of a coastal vibe, but it’s done in a traditional sophisticated way” Kari explained. To fulfill her vision, Kari is using light, soft, and neutral colors throughout the home. To spice things up, she is including unique lighting elements. She said, “The character is actually coming in the windows, because they have some interesting details in them.” The home will have many dramatic light fixtures including what Kari claimed is a chandelier in almost every room. Another way the Anderson’s are complimenting the neutral palate is by adding a splash of color to some of the features of the home. Kari chose to incorporate blue throughout the house as a bold accent color. Kari offered that, “[blue] is my favorite color and that’s a bold accent to kind of break it up.”

“The whole house is going to showcase what we can do,” Jordan said. “It is a model home that shows what we are capable of.”

Keeping most of the colors neutral allows the Andersons to showcase the detailed work that Big River Builders is known for. Since their home will be used as a model house for their business, the couple tried to include variations of certain details throughout the home. These include white, blue, whiteout grey washed, and traditional wood color cabinets, interesting accent walls, ceilings, and beam work as well as the custom woodwork that Big River Builders specializes in. Jordan said, “there will be something for everyone.” Another important part of the process for Jordan and Kari is incorporating unique details. These unique aspects of the home help to break up the neutral palate. From buffalo plaid flooring in the laundry room to a water fountain between their sons’ bedrooms, the Andersons aim to show customers what Big River Builders can do. Jordan is building a special smoking deck using what is called IPE decking. “It is a Brazilian hardwood that is used for decks, but it doesn’t get used too much around here” Jordan said, “It is a wood product and it will have a really exotic look to it.” Each and every detail of the Anderson’s home has been thought out in order to both showcase Big River Builders’ specialties and fit the needs of their family. Kari said, “For example, we put a second laundry room upstairs for the kids, so we don’t have to haul laundry up and down stairs.” Although Jordan and Kari have planned out every aspect of the house, they also understand how it feels to change their minds
