LETTER
FROM THE PUBLISHERS It’s all in the details; in the last issue we got to meet the builders, but in this issue you get to meet those who help make it a home and put on all the finishing touches. Although we get to see the big picture, walking into a perfect home, it’s the little things that make it beautiful and unique. Read ahead as David from Roughrider Hardwood tells us all about how a traditional railing with a modern twist completes a stylish, customized home in the center of Bismarck. Find out how Jamie with Pacific Sound turns his personal family home into a smart house by turning on lights, cameras and even his blinds all from his phone and from anywhere. But, it’s not just the home that makes the house, the outside matters, too especially when we only get to enjoy the outdoors for a limited time in North Dakota. Check out Jason and Trish’s outdoor haven and how Midwest Seal can keep your concrete looking fresh for years and Next 2 Nature can turn your outdoor bore into the talk of the neighborhood. Check out how these subcontractors are helping make your house a home and filling in all the gaps. It really is all in the details.

This is our third and final update with the Vetter family. From beginning to end, here’s an exclusive look into what it takes to build a dream home.
RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | FOUNDATION TO FINISH
W
e are back this issue for our final installment of Foundation to
Finish with the big reveal of Joe and Mariah Vetter’s stunning home. Clean lines, warm wood accents, and just the right amount of wow factor was combined to create a stylish, timeless home meant to be lived in. “It’s so our taste and our style. It’s a little more modern but not too modern, a lot of soft touches to make it still feel homey,” Joe explains.

It was the soft touches of the warm wood wraps featured throughout the main level of the home that really brought the homey feel. “When those went in that completely changed the look of the house,” Joe says. Mariah agrees, “I have to admit that I got a little tearyeyed because I loved them so much.” A room that the Vetter’s wanted to really stand out was their master suite. A focal point of the bedroom is the recessed bed trimmed out in white with gold foiled statement wallpaper and sconce lighting. “It turned out so close to the vision we had, and we are really, really happy with it,” Joe says. In fact, the master suite is Mariah’s favorite room of the house. “I’m not a big reader and I find myself reading in there,” she says smiling. A beautiful master bath with double vanities, unique diamond shaped mirrors, and dual showerheads make for a perfect place to start and end the day. The diamond grilled window plays off the diamond mirrors, and the black and white flooring and shower tile stay true to Mariah’s preference for clean lines.

The sheltered front porch, a must for Mariah because of her happy memories of her childhood covered porch, has become a favorite hangout spot for the Vetters. The final feel of the home is truly a shared vision for Joe and Mariah. “We did all the interior stuff ourselves. Mariah would show me something and sometimes I wouldn’t like it and I’d show her something and sometimes she wouldn’t like it, but we ran everything through one another before we made a decision on anything. Our styles are very similar,” Joe says. Its no secret that the overall design and planning of the home took time and many revisions, the building process took about seven months, typical for a house of this size. While Joe and Mariah took the design process on themselves, it was the work of their subcontractors that took this home from foundation to finish. Throughout the build teamwork was important, and Joe

BACKYARD ESCAPES BY KERNER POOLS AND SPAS STORY: MARIA FLECK PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
Started in 2018, Backyard Escapes by Kerner Pools and Spas is dedicated to creating a backyard oasis for their customers. “We want to provide a good quality pool that’s easy for people to take care of at an affordable price. That’s kind of our mission,” describes Jason Kerner, owner of Backyard Escapes. They work hard to provide the best product possible at the best value possible. Backyard Escapes began when Jason Kerner wanted a pool for his own backyard, but no company around offered what he and his wife were looking for. Jason researched types of pools and discovered fiberglass pools. Fiberglass pools are easier to maintain, quicker to install, have an outstanding warranty, and perhaps most importantly for a home in North Dakota, move with the ground when it freezes. Jason realized this was the only kind of pool he wanted, so he installed his own pool. From there, he and his wife began installing pools for friends who were impressed by his pool. The requests kept growing until Jason and his wife both decided to quit their full-time jobs and give this company their full attention. This venture has proven to be extremely successful for the Kerners, and their company grows every year as they gain more customers and install more pools. 20

BLIND AMBITION STORY: JENNIFER KRANZ PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
Jere Rogers, owner of Blind Ambition, has been in the interior design world for about 10 years. For six of those years she owned her own interior design business called Jere’s Interiors in Williston. When she moved to Bismarck Jere’s Interiors didn’t make the trip with her but after a little break, Jere got back into interior design with Blind Ambition. “I feel like windows are the finishing touch for a room,” Jere says smiling, “It’s a fun job and I love what I do.” Windows come in all shapes and all sizes making design difficult, but Jere embraces it. “It is challenging sometimes because you have to find the right blind for the right situation whether it be someone that can’t operate a blind or getting the right light in a room,” she explains. With all the homes people are building with big windows Jere encourages the homeowners to have their windows wired for power. “Its cool to push a button, see the blinds 22

CONCRETE CREATIONS STORY: JENNIFER KRANZ PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
When you think concrete you probably think driveways and patios, right? Tyler Lindberg, the owner of Concrete Creations, has set out to show that concrete doesn’t just belong outside and underfoot. “Most of the work I do is indoor kitchens, bathroom sinks, shower surrounds, and some outdoor stuff like kitchens and planters,” Tyler explains. The flatwork concrete work that Tyler did growing up with his father and uncle eventually led him to where he is today. The specific, custom, unique things Tyler is doing with concrete is taking what we know of the material and turning it on its head. Concrete is incredibly durable and the malleability of it lends itself to many different uses and looks. “I’ve made outdoor kitchens that look like wood and they’re going to hold up a lot longer than wood,” Tyler says. “So many different things can be done with the material it’s just a 24

DAKOTA OUTDOORSCAPES STORY: MARIA FLECK HOME PHOTOS: DANNA MIDDLETON HEADSHOT PHOTO: GLASSER IMAGES DESIGNER: PLAIN VIEW DESIGN CO.
Dakota OutdoorScapes creates beautiful landscape jobs that fit the personal style of the homeowner every time. Many different factors play into landscaping and determining who to hire for a project can be time consuming. Jon Rick, owner of Dakota OutdoorScapes, shares his tips for choosing a reliable landscaper. Tips for Finding a Reputable Landscaper •
Ask for references, customer testimonials, previous job locations (encourage to drive by)
•
Ask about warranties (plants, trees, irrigation, hardscapes, etc.)
•
Ask about project timelines, and make sure the contractor is following through on their commitments
•
Contractors should know the amount of man hours a project will take, and therefore should be able to give you a reasonable timeframe for completion. If they cannot do this, you might want to look for

FABRICATORS UNLIMITED STORY: MARIA FLECK PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
For 35 years, Fabricators Unlimited has been a dependable and affordable business that designs and fabricates highquality quartz, solid surface, natural stone, and laminate countertops along with other similar products. “The best thing about Fabricators is that we’re not just a one stop shop. We can do more than just your granite and stone,” says Kelli Thompson, sales representative and showroom manager at Fabricators Unlimited here in Bismarck. Many aspects of Fabricators Unlimited make them stand out from their competition. One of these elements is their dedication to ensuring the customer is informed about the product they choose. “We pride ourselves on not just being a selection showroom,” explains Kelli, “but an education showroom.” Granite or quartz is not the best fit for everyone, and Fabricators wants their customers to find the truly best fit for their lifestyle. “You don’t always have to spend a lot 32

MIDWEST SEAL CO. STORY: MARIA FLECK PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
Concrete sealant is an often overlooked yet important aspect of concrete. Benefits of concrete seals are numerous. Sealing concrete inhibits mold, increases durability, extends its life, and enhances color. Midwest Seal, established in 2018 by Jason Bauman, is a professional and affordable concrete sealing company that supplies this valuable service. The idea for Midwest Seal began when Jason tried to get the garage floor of his other business, Anytime Sales, sealed. “I called a company that does commercial flooring in Fargo,” recalls Jason. “This [floor] is 36,000 square feet, and they wanted $48,000 to do it. I said, the concrete is in already, and he kind of laughs and goes yeah, to do the nice epoxy, to come in and grind and etch… I was like I don’t need to spend $48,000 on something I just opened up. I got online and started talking to all these construction supply companies throughout the state and doing different things, and I did my own in here. I had customers come in and be like oh it’s nice in here, I like your floor. I’m like, why do you like my floor? They said, ‘it’s clean.’ They’re laying on the 38

The warranty on Midwest Seal’s floors is ten years; however, these sealed concrete floors often last even longer than this. Jason Bauman owns Midwest Seal along with Trish McFarland. Together, these two will continue to provide a valuable service for all homeowners looking to preserve their concrete and upgrade their home’s aesthetic.

NEXT 2 NATURE STORY: JENNIFER KRANZ LANDSCAPING PHOTOS: JARED WINTERS HEADSHOT PHOTO: GLASSER IMAGES
The trio of Jared Winters, Matt Winters, and Mitch Becker make up Next 2 Nature Landscape Company. With a combined 60 years of experience all three men grew up around landscaping and greenhouses. Drawing on their experience, knowledge, and each other’s strengths Jared, Matt, and Mitch create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces for their clients. While landscaping is often one of the last pieces to the puzzle of a home build or remodel Jared recommends people get Next 2 Nature involved in the process early on. “Things don’t happen overnight; it takes time even after meeting with somebody, to get inspiration and pull from the architecture of the house. The biggest thing is to make the landscaping seem like it’s not an afterthought,” Jared explains. As a rule of thumb, Jared suggest planning to spend about five percent of your homes total value on landscaping. Now this can be much more if you want a very elaborate outdoor area, live on ten acres or it may be a little less if you only want your yard seeded. Starting early will also give people 42

a couple of things here,” Joel says. “You wanted to bring obviously a lot of light into the room and a lot of visibility, so you want large expanses of glass, but you also want some ventilation. We tried in this case to bring that ventilation aspect down into the lower, so you have some awning windows down there that operate if needed, again allowing some ventilation in, but not obstructing the view.” Pella’s attention to detail allows for the beautiful views of this Vance Vetter Home to be accentuated through their windows and sliding glass doors. The design process throughout ensured the quality of this final product, which in turn contributed to the loveliness of the home, a tribute to the stunning work of Pella Heartland.

ROUGHRIDER HARDWOODS STORY: JENNIFER KRANZ PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
A love of woodworking inspired Dave Jensen’s decision to take advantage of a gap in the market for hardwood in the Bismarck area. “I actually sold trucks for Trucks of Bismarck, but I also wanted to own my own business and it occurred to me that there wasn’t a good source for hardwood lumber,” Dave explains. What began as a hobby store providing hardwood lumber for woodworkers, Roughrider Hardwoods gradually expanded into furniture and custom work like hand railings and newel posts. For the past 25 years, custom work has been the cornerstone of business. Stairways are the bread and butter for Roughrider Hardwoods and over the years Dave has seen trends come and go. 15 years ago, iron balusters were popular and turned wood spindles fell out of favor. Now, trends are shifting again, and Dave is seeing a more modern interpretation of traditional and in the last couple of years the rustic look has taken off. 54

WILLISTON WOODWORKS STORY: JENNIFER KRANZ PHOTOS: GLASSER IMAGES
Trust is an important hallmark of a relationship, especially a relationship that involves your home. John Haskins, general manager of Williston Woodworks, recognizes this and attributes that trust to Williston Woodworks longevity and success.
“When people are going to do work on their home or business, they want a professional. The core of the reason why we have a lot of business is because people trust us to do the job and get it done timely and for what we said we were going to charge for it,” John explains.
Started in 1952 Williston Woodworks manufactures residential and commercial cabinets, does case work and trim, as well as counter tops. They cover a large area going into Montana and a 100-150 mile radius around Williston. John started with Williston Woodworks in 1971 as a college kid taking architectural drafting and hasn’t looked back.
