We’re following the Heinle family through their new build over the next few issues. From beginning to end, here’s an exclusive look into what it takes to build a dream home.

lowers are blooming and the warm spring air is finally here. If you read our first installment of this year’s

Foundation to Finish feature, you know that this turn in weather means concrete has been poured, framing has begun, and Prestige Home and Design is full steam ahead on the Heinle family’s Misty Waters home. We sat down with Danette Heinle to get an update and get her perspective on the build.

FOUNDATION TO FINISH | RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE

For most, this is the time in a home build that the process starts to feel real, and this is the case for Danette. “I’m a very visual person so it was super exciting to see a room come to life with its actual dimensions rather than just looking at it on a sheet of paper,” Danette explains. “Now, I can dream about how I want to put it all together,” she says smiling. Danette had always thought building a home would be cool but didn’t have a specific look or finishes that she had been dreaming of. She loves timeless design and is aiming for a farmhouse inspired look. With an incredibly busy schedule and drive to stay on time for the fall Parade of Homes, Danette and the Heinle’s builder Josh Kuntz of Prestige Home and Design, decided it would be best to bring on some help. “Our family is busy. My kids are in tons of activities and sports, so we have a lot going on. I work full time and my husband is in the heart of spring planting. A lot of these decisions have to be made

and they need to be made now because things are starting to happen,” Danette says. She adds, “Josh is phenomenal, he’s great, he’s also very busy and he could accompany me to these appointments, but he has a schedule too, so it was a little tight to make it all jive.” Enter Shannon Koski of Studio One Designs. Shannon is helping Danette pull everything together. “I’m on Pinterest a lot getting different pictures and ideas. I sort of know what I want but to make it all come together is the more challenging part,” Danette explains. “I tell Shannon what I like, and she goes around the store and whittles the choices down to three. This makes it much more manageable and helps us stay on budget with our allowances.” So far, they have picked out countertops, cabinets, and hardware and are continuing to lean into the timeless look of blacks, whites, golds, and natural woods. Building a home can be a stressful, nerve-wracking process. Throw in a pandemic and post-pandemic supply chain issues, and you might think a new level of stress would be unlocked. But working with Josh has proven to be smooth regardless of delays out of everyone’s control.

The landscaping of this beautifully designed home built by Hallmark Homes was inspired by the coastal architecture of the house. Jared Winters, owner of Next 2 Nature, and his team made their vision for the landscape come through in the intentional design of the front and back yards. Each aspect was carefully planned to highlight the beauty of the home and its surrounding area. Next 2 Nature became involved in the design process of this home while it was still being framed. Being a part of the earlier stages of the home build ensured they were able to implement a detailed design of the home’s landscape that was true to the homeowners’ vision. Jared wanted the home’s landscape to harmonize with the home’s structure, another advantage of being involved in the home’s earlier construction stages. The design process took six months, while the actual landscaping took two months to fully finish. The substantial amount of time put into the landscaping meant the yards were designed with an incredible amount of attention to detail, flow, and function.

Continuing the home’s coastal design was an important part of the backyard’s arrangement. “The key focus was really just that backyard, taking in the view and expanding that outdoor living space,” explains Jared. Many coastal homes have outdoor living spaces, so this home has an outdoor grilling island with patio seating. From there, a natural flagstone trail leads to a secluded outdoor fire pit with lounge seating that overlooks the valley. Grasses planted around the firepit soften the area, making it cozy, and the firepit’s location at the property’s edge is not incidental either. “To see the house in its full potential you really have to walk through the yard,” says Jared, “and that’s what we wanted to do with the trail- carry you through the landscape.” The additional seating area with the firepit helps the homeowners utilize their whole backyard and highlights its beautiful view. Jared says dusk is one of the best times to be out at the fire pit because the patio has simple light features which perfectly complement a burning fire. From here the homeowners can watch the sunset and observe the nightlife in the valley below.

The landscaping’s intentional design stayed true to the home’s architecture and resulted in a gorgeous backyard. Jared and the whole team at Next 2 Nature worked tirelessly to make their vision a reality and their passion for their work comes through in every single detail. The grand front framed by birches, the private firepit area, and the overlook of the valley all came together in a beautifully executed landscaping job that will allow the homeowners of this stunning home on Crest Place to enjoy their backyard all summer long.

It is a big decision deciding to put a pool in and an even bigger commitment. Two years ago, homeowners Bonnie and Scott were toying with the decision between a vacation home or a backyard oasis, with a pool being at the top of the must have list. “Well, I didn’t make the decision, Bonnie did,” laughs Scott. Scott and Bonnie looked at vacation homes and decided that at the end of the day they wanted to stay close to their grandchildren. Instead of bringing the kids somewhere else, they decided to stay close and bring the pool to them. “We have six grandchildren and we wanted to provide an environment where they wanted to come and hang out at our house,” says Bonnie.

land. It wasn’t exactly an easy yard to dig or to get the pool set. Utilities were actually moved twice because of the slope in the yard, but we made it work,” says Wyatt Ehli. Scott and Bonnie’s pool is a 16x35 fiberglass pool with a sun tanning ledge. The pool had to be brought in on an almost perfect day, with no wind, which is a tough ask in North Dakota. “It was definitely tricky, but we got it in and the end result is great. The pool has three waterfall features, and has a hidden track system under the concrete for the pool cover making it a little less noticeable,” explains Wyatt.

Life is for making memories

The pool might have been a challenge, but it was making it all come together with landscape and a larger patio that was going to help make dreams come to life. “Jared with Next 2 Nature did such an incredible job bringing our vision to life. He was able to show us detailed renderings of the final product and those really got us excited,” says Bonnie.

and grandchildren, but also for themselves. The couple spends most of their evenings outside on the patio enjoying the light of the pool and the calmness of the water. Although the project may have been challenging, Scott and Bonnie are excited to enjoy the finished product this summer in and out of the pool.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time. I don’t even want to put the years in there,” jokes Michael Wentz, owner of Wentz Landscape Company. Wentz Landscape Company was started by Mike in 1998 with the mission to create yards that enhance the area’s beauty and the health of their clients. Mike is extremely knowledgeable, especially when it comes to plants. His many years of experience has driven his business to excel in the Bismarck/Mandan area for over twenty years.

A testament to the quality of Mike’s work is his clientele. The majority of his work comes from referrals and repeat customers. “They can expect total quality on everything that we do. That’s why we get all our repeat business and referrals,” says Mike. Mike attributes this to his hardworking team, “My whole crew is excellent. They’re good, and they care, and they’re very particular about what they do.” The high quality work Wentz Landscape does reveals a deeper passion that goes beyond simply work. The team at Wentz Landscape truly wants their clients to have a beautiful yard that will benefit them for life. Mike, who is constantly bringing in new plants to stay on the cutting edge of new plant materials, always tests the new plants out first to see if they can survive North Dakota’s harsh weather. He also looks at every aspect of a landscape, from the textures of the plants to the soil of the land. “We care about what we do. We’re not just out there to make a buck,” expresses Mike.

greenhouse technology. Paired with this knowledge is his natural talent for design which pulls together the various aspects of each landscaping job. Plant materials are essential to finishing off a yard, so Mike is always pushing his clients to utilize them. His favorite tree is the bur oak which is symbolic of strength and endurance. Because of this, it is often used as a memory tree in remembrance of loved ones who have died. Mike says his favorite flower has to be hostas because they amaze him year round.

Summers in North Dakota are short and sweet. Because of this, North Dakotans are masters at getting out and enjoying the warm summer days while they can. No one appreciates summer quite like those who have gone through over five months of winter. There are many ways to take advantage of the warm weather, but spending time in your very own backyard is an easy way to get outside and soak up the sun. Upgrading your backyard adds incredible value to your home while maximizing your enjoyment of it. One couple decided to do just this with their home in southern Bismarck with the help of Precision Tops.

The backyard of this featured home, which overlooks the river, was already a place where the homeowners could get outside and enjoy the nice weather. Before this project, the backyard already included a patio with seating, a hot tub with a tv, and a pool complete with a slide. But now, thanks to Precision Tops, it also features an outdoor cooking area equipped with a grill and pizza oven. Michael says they can install just about any kind of grill in an outdoor cooking bar. Precision Tops just needs to know the kind and size so they can cut the countertop out in the proper size. The addition of an outdoor cooking area brings so much to the backyard and the home as a whole. “It adds huge value to your house,” says Michael Drentlaw. In addition to the bar’s granite countertop and backsplash, Precision Tops installed the tops of the stone light feature next to the pool. All the countertops are an all-natural stone with a brushed finish. The brushed look keeps the stone more matte looking, not as shiny as other stones. While quartz is a popular stone for countertops, most quartz cannot withstand outdoor conditions. Granite is the ideal choice for outdoor countertops. It is a sturdy stone that can stand up to whatever harsh weather conditions North Dakota throws at it. Michael estimates that they do around 50 projects similar to this outdoor kitchen every year.

Stone countertops for outdoor furniture are also popular because their heaviness ensures they do not get blown over by the wind. Precision Tops has done almost everything conceivable for a countertop and are experts at stonework. Grills For your barbeques this year, consider a Broil King or Big Green Egg. Broil Kings are gas grills with models that range from an excellent basic grill to the Imperial which is basically a rolling kitchen. Everyone has heard about the Big Green Egg grills, but these charcoal grills are for more than just smoking. They are also great for baking and grilling. Be warned, however, after tasting a steak prepared on a Big Green Egg, you may never order one from a restaurant again.

For the truly adventurous, at the end is a ladder you can climb to reach the top of the same butte Harold Schafer once climbed.

(you really can’t miss this show!)

Each of Medora’s hotels offers comfort and luxury along with western charm. The Rough Riders hotel and Badlands hotel are both located in downtown Medora. There is also Elkhorn Quarters in Medora. If you are looking for more private accommodations, you can stay at the Wooly Boys Inn. Booking available at medora.com.

There are also many cute local stores and boutiques you can check out and shop at and maybe even pick up a souvenir for friends or family back home.

As the Medora website puts it, “the Medora Musical is the rootin’-tootinest, boot-scootinest show in all the Midwest. There’s no other show quite like it.” If you visit Medora, you cannot miss the musical which is performed Tuesday through Saturday in an outdoor amphitheater. It features world-class singing and dancing, a variety show, dramatic reenactments, fireworks, and SO MUCH MORE! A memorable event that the whole family will remember for years to come.

Fondue Pitchfork Steak Fondue- If you’ve never tried the pitchfork steak fondue, you are missing out! Every evening, chefs load steaks onto pitchforks and fondue them western style on top of the Tjaden Terrace where guests enjoy a beautiful view along with a savory meal.
