LETTER
FROM THE PUBLISHERS I believe it is absolutely true, kitchens and baths make the home. Whether it’s a new build, a remodel or a flip home, the two major spaces that people look at are the kitchens and baths. These are the spaces that we spend a lot of time in. The kitchen is the heart of the home, from cooking, hosting and simple family dinners, much time is spent in the kitchen. The bathroom is much the same, getting ready in the morning, showering, relaxing in the tub and even “doing our business,” the bathrooms in our homes matter. This issue highlights both, from functionality in the master bath with plug ins by the toilet and amazing views by the bathtub, to a modern kitchen with gold accents that takes the modern minimalistic look and makes it warm. See how builders and designers walk into not only new builds, but remodels, too, and transform these spaces into a place you would never want to leave. Functionality and design come together to create these masterpieces. Sometimes the kitchen and bath spaces can be hard to visualize and have a specific vision for; it can be overwhelming and daunting, especially in a large space. Leave it to the professionals, whether big or small, these designers and builders and subcontractors have transformed spaces and made them work beautifully. Check it out!

As usual, Brandon Fraser’s ingenuity and attention to detail have set his project apart. The owner of Burleigh Builders carefully and thoughtfully planned every aspect of his striking bathroom. The many windows, separate vanities, and wood ceiling, not normally seen in bathrooms, make this space exceptional. Walking into the bathroom, your eye is immediately drawn to the many windows and the view beyond. Natural light fills the room, making it feel welcoming, but one feature is noticeably absent. “The first thing that people always say is, don’t you have any curtains or drapes? The windows kind of have a tint to them and when it’s light out, it’s reflective. People think you can see in more than you can actually,” explains Brandon.
w w w . r i ver a n dr a nch m aga z i n e . com
11
Another noticeable aspect is the size of the bathroom. While designing the room, Brandon’s goal was to have enough storage and space for two adults and, as his family grew, for children as well. Brandon describes, “We could literally just have this bathroom and probably be fine, because the kids get ready in here, they shower in here. They have a bathroom right over there, but they come all the way in here to use this.” The carefully planned layout allows multiple people to use the bathroom at once. A large tub sits underneath the windows overlooking the landscape, while Corian vanities with Edison styled light fixtures are situated on the right and left sides of the bathroom. The toilet is in a separated nook and on the other side of the coffee bar is the spacious shower. There is also plenty of space for towels to be thrown in the middle of the room when needed. “It’s really a good, effective use of space and that’s tough because sometimes things get too big for no reason or added function,” says Brandon.

Two more unique aspects of this bathroom are the coffee bar and the walk-in closet. The coffee bar is Brandon’s way of making drinking coffee in the morning more convenient. Instead of heading downstairs to get coffee, you can brew it as you get ready. Also located in the bathroom is a huge walk-in closet. “I thought it was kind of weird when people requested it,” admits Brandon, “but now I don’t think I’d do it any

different. It makes a lot of sense. It’s really nice to have everything right here.” The convenience of having the coffee bar and walk-in closet inside the bathroom makes mornings run smoother. Brandon’s favorite part of the bathroom is the shower. This spacious shower holds two shower heads, a shelf, and a bench. Both the shelf and the bench are made from Corian. The bench tilts slightly

away from the wall, so water is unable to gather on the edge causing water damage. The floor slopes slightly towards the back where the drain sits under the bench. Because all the water flows to the back, there is no need for a curb or step, creating a seamless appearance. “Thinking back about why I did this, I can’t even tell you. Things just kind of came to me, and I start drawing, and
it’s like oh, wow that’s cool,” explains Brandon. He thought of everything when building this bathroom and even added a small phone shelf and outlet for charging by the toilet. “That’s what you get when you work with a builder like me,” adds Brandon. These little touches of thinking far ahead about the everyday use of his projects are the reason his projects always turn out exceptional.

DESIGN story Maria Fleck • photos Glasser Images
The idea for this beautiful home build started out small. Originally, when the homeowners came to Knutson Homes, they were planning on a kitchen remodel. The next spring, the homeowners called up Knutson Homes again, this time hoping to build an entirely new home. Thus began a building process that would take only a little over a year to complete.

Knutson Homes In order to build this home, Knutson Homes had to be in constant communication with the homeowners. Many of the ideas for the home’s design came from the homeowners, and Knutson Homes worked hard to bring their ideas to life. One of these places is in the bathrooms. “The homeowners really had a lot of say in the bathrooms. They wanted their bathrooms not just to function. They wanted a really cool, artistic look in their bathrooms with both lighting and different materials,” explains Cory Knutson, co-owner of Knutson Homes. This effect was created using a combination of wood, tiles, paint, and other varied materials which together produced the desired artistic style.

Just as the bathroom is largely based on the homeowners’ ideas, so is the kitchen’s design. “The kitchen is definitely the most unique kitchen that we’ve done,” says Cory. As the focal point of this home, the kitchen stands out in numerous way, both aesthetically and functionally. The kitchen is inviting with its many windows bringing in natural light. The entire kitchen looks and feels spacious and airy with its clean, contemporary layout. “Bringing everything together style-wise turned out really good,” explains Drew Knutson, the other owner of Knutson Homes. While the kitchen was initially planned to be situated further back in the house, the idea to have it as the statement room required the original layout be changed. The installation of a butler’s pantry in addition to the full storage pantry means the counters can stay uncluttered in the kitchen, keeping space open for cooking. Drew and Cory’s favorite part of building this home was their collaboration with the homeowners and Mike Emmel, owner of Interior Woodworks. Cory Knutson and Drew Knutson Co-Owners of Knutson Homes

Interior Woodworks Interior Woodworks custom made the kitchen and pantry cabinets, island, bar, master vanity, and entry cabinetry for the bathroom. Mike Emmel worked very closely with the homeowners in order to help realize their ideas. “He asked for lots of pictures and tried to get in my head and it was awesome working with him because he was like yeah, I’m willing to try anything, ” describes the homeowner. This collaboration resulted in these inventive and stunning bathrooms and kitchen.

One challenge with this particular kitchen was the homeowners’ desire for lots of windows. In order to install the many windows in the kitchen, upper cabinet space had to be sacrificed. To accommodate this, there is full storage within the kitchen island on both sides which is unusual. The kitchen also has many drawers for additional storage to make up for the lost space. These details remain subtle however, and the kitchen is an open space that doesn’t feel cramped. Mike’s dedication to his craft ensured a beautiful finish. “What the client gets is a very quality product. I have an assistant, Drea, at the office,” describes Mike. “Drea and I make a great team at listening to the homeowners and accommodating their wish list but making it look like it belongs in the house. My strength is in design, proportions, the function. Drea’s gifts are in the colors, door styles, molding, that kind of thing.” These two complementary talents shine in the kitchen and bathroom’s finished design. The careful planning and evident passion behind this build produced a gorgeous home with a stunning kitchen and bathroom. The creativity of Knutson Homes and Interior Woodworks allowed them to work together to build a unique home that the homeowners can enjoy for years to come.

BRIGHT story Jennifer Kranz • photos Glasser Images
A growing family and a penchant for hosting were the main motivations behind this beautiful home renovation. The six-month process took the dated house to a light and bright functional family home. The homeowners moved into the house in 2014 with no plan to remodel, but as they lived in the home and after having their third child, it was clear that some updating needed to be done. The couple took about a year to thoughtfully create a design in their heads before they brought it to Tobias Marmin Construction. “It was a 90’s wonder, golden oak everywhere with lots of carpet, lots of walls, and oak banisters,” the homeowner explains, “We just blasted everything.” What came together after demo is a classic, timeless look that the homeowners love.

White cabinets and a warm stain in the island achieved the perfect look. The homeowners worked with Mike Emmel at Interior Woodworks and drew inspiration from a particular home on Pinterest. “Pinterest was totally my jam for a year and a half and there was a house on there that had this beautiful stain color and I wanted that exact one,” the homeowner said of an image of a home from the Utah Parade of Homes. “They tried really hard to match it and they couldn’t get it quite right so in the end I found the Parade of Homes home where it was, called the contractor, the contractor sent me to the sub who built the cupboards. The sub who built the cupboards sent me to the stain mixer and they had custom mixed a stain just for that house so they sent some up here and we were able to make a match,” the homeowner says with a laugh. The infamous stain on the island warms up the otherwise white space and ties in the overhead beam perfectly.

Subtle details make the kitchen functional while maintaining its classic beauty. Mike and his Interior Woodworks crew is to thank. “He did an extra amazing job because we had little details like having the dishwasher be as hidden as possible, so the countertop is wider and the drawer is a false front,” explains the homeowner. Other special details include a smart take on ‘junk drawers’ using the vertical space next to the refrigerator, a hidden tv above the ovens so football can be watched while cooking, and false fronts made to look like two separate drawers but are actually one big, deep one. Classic white countertops with subtle veining from Fabricators Unlimited finish off the space.

The accent tile above the stove adds a fun point of interest and is also used in the master bath shower niche, tying the two spaces together. The tile in the master bath plays off the Cadet Blue of the cabinetry and adds a unique element to an otherwise utilitarian space. “We just wanted something a little different. There was a lot of super classic plain and we figured [the bathroom] was a space where we could do something just for us, the homeowner explains.

“Being able to work the homeowner on her vision with the guidance of Nataly at Tobias Marman Construction, was truly a breeze! Such a unique and gorgeous kitchen was brought to life with her Eternal Calacatta Gold quartz countertops by Silestone. The brightness and flow of the design truly works with her space and fits with her vision.”
“In listening to the homeowner’s needs for organization, we worked together to find a way to incorporate a hidden drop-zone area for mail, keys, paperwork, while maintaining a clean look and not taking away valuable cooking space. The sink bay window posed a challenge for making sure the dishwasher fit nicely. In order to keep a finished look, we made a raised panel end to keep the continuity going with the rest of the kitchen instead of making it something that your eye would stop at and question ‘what is going on there?’. The beauty with custom cabinetry is solving these small but noticeable details.”
“The homeowners initially wanted TMC to build an addition to their split-entry home and to buildout their daylight basement. However, flood plain ordinances would not allow it. We went back to analyze our clients’ needs and find a solution that would suit this wonderful family. Instead of building out the basement, we added a significant 24’x39’ addition with crawl space, complete with a 2nd master suite, and renovated their main floor kitchen, dining, and living area. Thanks to the talented and skilled people we work with, the project went incredibly smoothly, and our clients were so excited about their new, beautiful space.”

We sat down with designer Shannon Koski to chat about one of her most recent projects in Mandan. The new build in Marina Bay is finished in a modern contemporary way with equal parts light and dark showcasing the dramatic beauty of the mixed period design. The owners, Chad and Jamie Kahl, wanted something unlike anything they had seen in central North Dakota. To achieve the cutting-edge look, Shannon sat down with the couple and talked through their vision. “Jamie wanted clean, sleek lines and an uncluttered look. Everything is clean and kind of subtle, but the contrast is what makes it pronounced,” Shannon explains.

To bring her client’s visions to life Shannon likes to begin with a vision board. “It starts with a price and their board and we go from there. I usually pick out the options that are in their price range and give them the look that they want,” Shannon says, though the design doesn’t have to be set in stone. “I make sure they understand that everything can be changed, and we’ll take it one step at a time.”

No detail was overlooked in the Kahl’s home and the kitchen is a shining example of the attention paid to staying true to the contemporary modern design. Sleek black cabinets create a stunning contrast with the white quartz countertops. The quartz not only looks amazing in the space it brings the functionality of modern design with it. “Quartz is an easy way to make the countertops functional, durable, stain-proof, and affordable,” explains Shannon.

Unique features of the kitchen continue with the exposed floating shelves found on either side of the hood. “The shelves are a traditional aspect. The natural wood brings warm and welcoming to a modern kitchen,” Shannon explains. Two design elements that contribute to the kitchen’s clean lines are in the way the quartz is used and in the wall and trim color choices. “When you match the trim and wall colors to be similar to each other it makes the space feel bigger,” says Shannon. The quartz runs up the walls in the kitchen, creating seamless lines and eliminating a design element that can otherwise distract the eyes. Clear globe lighting above the island keep sight lines clean and oversized windows allow natural light to flood the space. For the last eight years, Shannon has been working on everything from remodels, new builds, interior design, and home designs from start to finish. Her niche is truly all aspects and forms of design. With all the work she has done, this home is one of her favorites. She is partial to the home’s contemporary modern style and she is not shy about sharing her favorite part, “The black [cabinets] on the really bright floor is incredible. I just like it because it’s different. I haven’t seen something like this so I’m partial to really loving it.”

Winding up a hill, through trees and greenery, tucked away within central Bismarck, you’ll find a diamond in the rough. There is something to be said about putting in sweat equity and making a house truly your own. This ambitious homeowner took that sweat equity to heart as she took on a whole new task: home remodeling. The homeowner indicated, “The only thing I really wanted was something I could put my own touches on. I love the modern look but wanted it to feel homey. Honestly, most homes I liked were out of my price range, so I knew quite early if I wanted what I wanted I was going to have to remodel.” The homeowner also complemented the realtor, Pat Koski. “He would send me a ton of properties with good bones and lots of potential. This one was straight out of the 70s, smoke smell and all, but I knew it was the one as soon as I walked in,” said the homeowner laughing.

This charming 1970s condo is now crisp white, with warm wood features and black hardware with a mid-century modern feel. “I love the layout of my home and did not want to change that, but I went with soft whites for walls and trim to help make the space feel larger. I kept the wood beams in the living room to keep the whole space warm, then went with a cooler floor from Carpet World to tie in the beams and create some contrast,” explains the homeowner. This remodel was no small task and what was supposed to take 4 to 6 months is now getting close to a yearlong process. “My goal was to come in and gut it within a couple months, I laugh at myself now even thinking that. The pandemic obviously created a bit of a delay, but everything takes time. I started with the main living spaces first, the kitchen and living room,” says the homeowner. “Most everything was carpet and then the kitchen had a yellow, tan vinyl flooring; I knew that that had to go. I worked closely with Travis at Carpet World and together we found a flooring that would work in the space. He was great to work with and helped me find something not only in my budget, but that was durable for a kitchen and tied in both the darker tones and whites together.

Flooring goes a long way to help modernize a new space, but that’s not all. Besides new appliances, light fixtures, and fresh paint the homeowner had the ceilings scraped and retextured and new cabinets and countertops installed. “The condo was definitely a gut job, but in the most fun way. I started out wanted to paint and reface the cabinets, but after reassessing them and having a contractor look at them, they needed to be replaced. Artifex Furniture did my cabinets and really captured exactly what I was looking for. I was browsing on Instagram one day and saw their post of a kitchen and realized that they did custom cabinets and were local. I immediately messaged them, and they gave me a quote within the week. Remick and Lisa are both such easygoing people and helped me bring my vision for the kitchen to life,” the homeowner says.

From brassy gold to chic black, this outdated condo has had a major facelift. “I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. I had a lot of help, and the end result is amazing. From cabinets to flooring, countertops, and lighting, I love every part of this home,” exclaims the homeowner.

Travis Westgard was the Flooring Consultant and Sales representative from Carpet World that worked diligently on this 1970s condo remodel. “You always have to be competitive with price, but customer service says a lot and goes a long way, so I hope I won her over with my personality. She definitely did her due diligence and gave each local flooring business a shot. In the end, I am glad she chose to work with me,” expresses Travis. This remodel, although for a small space, was not the easiest. The homeowner was on a tight budget and there were a lot of factors, including the spiral staircase,
RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | October-November 2020
and the narrow railing coming from the downstairs. Travis was the first ever and one of the only subs to see the raw before and after transformation. “It is crazy to see the transformation, the unit was very dated and now it looks 2020. I walked in and it’s Minneapolis to Montana, pulling in the modern, mixed with the more natural tones,” says Travis. The flooring itself is a vinyl plank and is incredibly durable and water resistant. “I am glad she went with this particular product. The vinyl plank is a floating floor like a laminate, but more rubbery and very water resistant and matted for
the busy household. This is the perfect choice for the families with kids, pets or busy people because it is very low maintenance and extremely durable,” says Travis. From the first day to the last day Travis and his flooring knowledge not only helped transform the home, his customer service helped make this remodel an enjoyable experience. According to the homeowner, Travis made the process easy, was available and knowledgeable with any questions and it was truly a great experience.

Remick & Lisa Albitre Owners of Artifex Furniture
Remick & Lisa Albitre, owners of Artifex Furniture, are a husband and wife team who can do it all. Five years ago, Lisa and Remick had an idea to make their hobby into a side gig. “It all started one Saturday when we were both home; I found an ottoman on Pinterest that I really wanted. We were bored and decided to try and build one. We built it all in one day; I put it on Facebook to see what would happen and it sold immediately. I had mentioned it was custom made and had eight more requests for ottomans and from there it just evolved. People started asking for

more and different things,” says Lisa. The dynamic duo of woodworking really did not have any previous experience, Remick and Lisa would get a request for an item, spend hours researching the best way to build it, and do it. The Albitre’s began this hobby only two years before the requests became so overwhelming that it became their full time job.

Artifex Furniture looks to produce high quality, and handmade wood based products, that compliment your home and style. “After a couple years of doing all of this, I realized I have a vision and the ability to walk into a blank space and visualize what it is going to look like done, luckily my husband does too and can understand the explanation of my ideas,” laughs Lisa.

make the final product beautiful. In this particular project, the 70s condo, you can truly see their craft revealed. “We had a lot of fun on this project, we slowly see modern kitchens becoming much more of a thing in Bismarck, and with a younger homeowner, it was fun to do something more modern. We used the flat panel doors and she chose the sleek black handles. There are a lot of clean, and straight lines and I think it turned out great,” smiles Lisa.

How did the home influence the vibe? “One of our services is to come into a home that’s been finished and work with you on your furnishings, and that’s what we’ve done with this homeowner. The beams had a huge influence. Also bringing the exterior foliage, coming from the outside to the inside through the patio window. I really wanted to stay organic with things and just in visiting with my client, that was her vibe also. We did use some of her existing pieces, which is not uncommon at all, the green chair and the leather sofa. We brought in artwork, rugs, accent pieces. We just finished the area and completed it with our pieces.”
What is unique about the countertops you provided for the homeowner? “Nuage is a quartzite, not to be mistaken with quartz. Two or three years ago most people weren’t familiar with quartzite, now we have customers regularly asking for it by name. I think we have HGTV to thank for that. It’s a natural stone similar to granite as far as durability, but is denser, and most often easier to care for.”
Explain your part in the kitchen. “We did all the fabrication and installation for the countertops. It’s kind of fun that Coldspring is in town so that the homeowner could pick out the full slab and see what they’re getting. Then whatever slab the customer picks out is what we bring down to the shop to run through our process. We work with 13 vendors across the Midwest. If you want quartz, granite, DEKTON, porcelain, or anything, we can help get that for you and install it.”
Tell us about your inspiration for the kitchen. “I just gave it some foliage, brought some organic things in again, some texture. The fact that the kitchen has got the white cabinets with a nice clean quartz and then the beadboard on the back, really blows it open. It takes your eye from here in the main living area down to our little dinette area. And that’s what I like. It draws your eye and look at what you’re seeing again, foliage, nature, the outside. Love it.” Why did you pick an elevated table? “I wanted something that your eye went to, but it has to be functional. There is no island in here, but we’ve given our client the island height with the counter stools.”
What do you personally love about them? “Nuage has directional movement going in several directions, something not common in most natural stone. Also, true white is hard to find in natural stone, Nuage quartzite is an exception and is as close to “white” as mother nature allows. It has the appearance that many people look for in quartz, but with the beauty and depth of natural stone.” What do you recommend for people either remodeling or budget conscious when picking out countertops? “Don’t have your mind set on a certain material when selecting your countertops. Granite, quartzite and quartz are all great materials, each with their own pros and cons. Price is more dictated on the complexity of your project than the material you select to use for said project. Also, when you come see us to make your selection, bring cabinet and flooring samples with you. It really helps people see the big picture when you can set your samples up next to our full slabs.”
What is the process? “We will come out to a customer’s house, create a template of [the space], and make sure we kind of get a feel for how the walls behave, because every house is just a little bit different. Then that template will follow the stone and the countertops through fabrication up to installation.” What are your thoughts seeing it installed? “I love it. In the office, we don’t see the process that the installers see. We see the full slab, we kind of see what it looks like when it’s on our tables in the fabrication process, but then seeing it paired with the white cabinets, the white backsplash, and the lighting, it really brings out the characters of the stone. It’s kind of cool.”

RIVER + RANCH MAGAZINE | October-November 2020
No doubt, this year has been one for the record books. Even as park staff navigating the rough waters of the pandemic, we come to appreciate the health benefits of being outside in the state park. During the summertime it’s easier to find the time to opt outside. As we make our way through fall and winter you must continue to maintain your mental and physical health. Studies have shown that spending just 120 minutes in nature per day can significantly increase your mental health. With that said, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, south of Mandan, is calling your name and is waiting to help you rejuvenate your mental vibes this fall.
As an outdoors enthusiast and staffer at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, I get to see firsthand what spending time in the state park regularly has done for myself, as well as many of the regular park users. Whether you are venturing out on your own or with your family, there is plenty to keep you active in the great outdoors this fall and winter. Here are some ideas for increasing your mental health this time of year.
Hiking Hiking is an excellent activity to do in the state park. Hiking offers park users the opportunity of maintaining their physical health, and more importantly reenergizes that much needed mental reboot. At Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, we have 8+ miles of trails that take you throughout the state park. Whether you are learning to hike or a regular user, the trail loops are short distances and are easy to navigate allowing users to create a distance that is best suited to their experience level. Some of the best
views of the state park and Missouri River Valley can be found on the multi-use trails. The view off the northeast edge of the Little Soldier Loop is stunning anytime of the year. This popular loop is a just over 2 miles and follows the edge of the hilltops along the east edge of the park giving you Instagramworthy views of Bismarck and Mandan.
Biking Like hiking, biking the trails at the state park pair the physical activity with the mental agility needed to navigate your way around the trails that snake their way though the hills. Biking offers users the great opportunity to bike from town on the Millennium Legacy Bike trail which is a paved bike trail that connects Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park with the cities of Mandan and Bismarck. The state park is approximately 7 miles south of Mandan making for an easy ride from town to the park. Once at the park you can chose to continue around the park, or head out on
the 8 miles of single-track trail, making for a more adventurous ride.
Camping Even in the fall, camping is a great activity to do on your own or with the family. Camping can be the overnight getaway you need to relax and reset. At the state park, we offer both primitive sites for tent camping and electrical sites for those that are bringing along a more robust camping vehicle. Recreation camping goes way back to almost the turn of the 20th century. As national parks and state parks became more popular, so did the recreational activity of camping. One hundred plus years later camping continues to give you an opportunity to connect with nature while doing some of the same activities you would do right in your own home. From cooking and eating, to board games with the family, and warming yourself around a fire, a little deviation from the norm could be just what you need to get your mind back on track.
Relaxing in Nature As the leaves begin to turn this fall, the state park is a fantastic place to just be still. Locating that sweet spot in the park could be one of the best things for your mental health. Finding your reprieve on the trail, eating at a picnic shelter, fishing along the shoreline, meditating on the overlook or simply admiring the sites of the park, your mental health will certainly thank you for taking the time outside in a North Dakota State Park. Fall and winter are some of the best times to visit the state parks. When you visit during the summer, you often compete with the normal summer crowds, but in the fall and winter you truly get the chance to experience the raw beauty of the legendary outdoor spaces North Dakota and Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park have to offer. See you this fall in the park.
