PROMOTING ACTIVE LIFESTYLES

The Park District boards in Bismarck and Mandan organize sports leagues in a variety of activities A to Z — from adaptive recreation to volleyball, and all the letters in between. In 2017, Bismarck Parks and Recreation District received the highest and most prestigious award attainable by a park and recreation agency; the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. Mandan’s universal playground, opened in 2015, includes a zip line with disc seats and molded bucket seats; an updated version of a traditional merry-go-round that allows easy transfer from a wheelchair; and a quiet, cozy dome for kids who need a break from the action.

With seven golf courses throughout the community, there is play for all skill levels. Of the seven courses, five are 18-holes; two are private; and one offers fine dining. When the sun gets too hot or the snow gets too deep, there is also a golf dome to practice driving and putting. In 2017, Mandan Municipal Golf Course opened the first accredited FootGolf course in North Dakota. Hawktree Golf Club is on Golf Digest’s list of the top 100 public courses in the U.S. and is on Golfweek’s list of “Best Modern Golf Course in the United States.”

Bismarck-Mandan is having resurgence of minor league sports with three teams taking the field and rink in 2022. If you take American football and drop it onto a field 1/4 the size of a traditional field, you’ll get Indoor Football. And when you drop Indoor Football into the arena of the Bismarck Event Center, you get the Bismarck Bucks. After Memorial Day, the Bismarck Larks throw out the first pitch at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark. The Bismarck Larks, a Northwoods League team, is a local collegiate baseball team featuring top collegiate recruits from across the country. Bismarck Bobcats have been a mainstay in Bismarck-Mandan for over 20 years. The junior hockey league prepares players, ages 16-20, to play NCAA collegiate hockey. Dirt track racing is also thriving in Bismarck-Mandan. The Dacotah Speedway in Mandan has some of the highest weekly car counts in North Dakota.

PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

More and more public art pops up in Bismarck-Mandan each year. The Chamber EDC’s Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program has been responsible for multiple public art projects: North Dakota Music Lane in Mandan’s Dykshoorn Park; Art Alley 5.5 in downtown Bismarck; Heritage Art Tunnel near the Heritage Center in Bismarck; and a brand new art installation at the entrance to the Bismarck Event Center.

DAY AT THE MUSEUM

The North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum is a world-class facility located on the North Dakota Capitol grounds. The state museum exhibits North Dakota’s history from the fossils of the Cretaceous period through the migration of Early American Peoples to the agriculture, energy and industry innovations of today. North Dakota’s premier science center is located right here in Bismarck-Mandan. North Dakota’s Gateway to Science is a hands-on science center offering interactive exhibits on electricity, robotics, and STEM. Gateway to Science adds a little art and turns STEM into STEAM with their annual Einstein on Wine gala.

UNIQUE SHOPPING & DINING

Bismarck-Mandan has much to offer residents and visitors alike with its unique combination of locally-owned small businesses and nationally recognized retailers and chains. There is always opportunity to visit something well-known or to discover something new.

Downtown Bismarck is a vibrant cluster of locally-owned storefronts. It contains within itself an art district, dining district, and design district. These districts all offer a variety of local shops and restaurants, many of which have a big-city artistic feel. World-class cuisine and design can be found in this ever-expanding downtown. Every need can be met with various furniture, clothing, and art stores placed along the bustling streets.

Downtown Mandan offers a distinct Main Street, USA atmosphere. Walking down the streets of this downtown area is almost like taking a step back in time. Here you’ll find repair shops, diners, classic cars, and a small-town feel. There is plenty to do, including visiting various art galleries, pubs, and unique shops.
