BSC History Created in 1939 in response to a community need for a local college, BSC was originally known as Bismarck Junior College. The first students started classes on September 4, 1939, on the third floor of Bismarck High School with 107 full- and part-time students and 12 instructors. By the late 1940s, a new location became increasingly urgent as college enrollments soared with returning GIs. In 1951 the ND Legislature responded to an appeal from community leaders to grant the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site. BJC moved into its own building at 900 Boulevard Avenue in 1955.

In addition to the primary campus, BSC has two satellite locations. The Bismarck State College-Mandan Campus at 1831 Twin City Drive S.E. in Mandan opened in 2007 to house the Mechanical Maintenance Technology program. The Lineworker program has long been located in its own space on the Old Red Trail in Mandan where an outdoor forest of poles provides hands-on practice for lineworker students. Part of the Bismarck Public Schools for many years, the college became part of the North Dakota University System in 1984. The collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name changed to Bismarck State College in 1987.

Within a few years, the college had outgrown the Capitol site. In 1959 Harold Schafer, a local entrepreneur and founder of the successful Gold Seal Company, offered the college land overlooking the Missouri River at the northwest edge of Bismarck. Classes began on the new campus in the fall of 1961 in a single building, Schafer Hall.

Today, Bismarck State College is transitioning to the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first polytechnic institution, building upon its two-year transfer and technical offerings with more four-year technical degrees. BSC is the third largest institution in the North Dakota University System with 3,600 students and serving 6,400 additional community and business members through Continuing Education and TrainND.

That windy hill has been transformed over the years with the addition of more than a dozen buildings, countless landscape improvements, the MDU Resources Community Bowl, parking lots, sidewalks, walking paths and more. The most recent addition, the BSC Health Sciences, brought a state-of-the art virtual hospital to campus for students studying for careers in healthcare.

For 80 years, this college has served students and the region, evolving and growing to ensure that our students are ready for what comes next and ready for their beyond.

Congratulations graduates! You’ve made history. The Spring of 2020 was one for the books. Historians will write about this experience for generations to come. The coronavirus pandemic closed schools and businesses. Jobs and lives were lost. Weddings, funerals, entertainment, and, yes, commencements were disrupted all over the world. In his bestselling book, The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman argues that technology has made us all neighbors. Geographical distances and political boundaries, he says, are no longer obstacles to learning or business or daily lives. The coronavirus has made this neighborhood even more intimate. We’re all in this together, all of humanity. We are all neighbors on what physicist Carl Sagan called this “Pale Blue Dot,” a reference to what our Earth looks like in a photograph taken by the spacecraft Voyager when it was 3.7 billion miles away from us. The coronavirus pandemic tells us that on this Pale Blue Dot, we all need to learn to cooperate to prevent such crises from happening in the future. Closer to home, this virus taught us new ways to live, mostly alone; new ways to interact with family and friends, conduct business, and live our daily lives. It’s a time that both isolated us and brought us closer together as we worked, studied, or simply waited this thing out in our homes. We adapted, evolved, and persevered in our global neighborhood. And you, graduate, you made it through all that to this milestone. BSC could not be prouder of our 2020 graduates. Earning a degree is a significant accomplishment worthy of celebration in normal times. But 2020 was not normal. Those used to in-person learning had to navigate a fully online learning environment, figure out how to connect with classmates and faculty, and manage the responsibilities of life outside of school — all while coping with the fear and stress of a global health crisis. And you did it. You made it. You graduated from college. As you celebrate this milestone, celebrate your courage, too. No matter how quickly your workplace evolves or how the jobs of the future look, this spring has proven you have the resiliency, strength, and abilities to meet any challenge head on, and, as of today, with a college degree in hand, too. Go forward, be well, and enjoy what comes next. Best Wishes!

BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2020 COMMENCEMENT

Commencement Speaker CARA MUND Cara Mund is a Brown University honors graduate with a degree in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizations. On September 10, 2017, Cara made history by becoming the first woman from the state of North Dakota to be awarded the title of Miss America. In her role as Miss America, Cara embarked on a yearlong national speaking tour where she traveled an average of 20,000 miles a month and changed location nearly every 48 hours. During her year as Miss America, Cara served as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, supported our military, promoted her own personal platform, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and encouraged young women everywhere to strive for excellence and never be silenced. Cara knows the importance of failure, determination, persistence, and courage when it comes to turning a dream into a reality. As a firm believer that our lives are defined by the legacy we leave, Cara intended to leave a Miss America legacy focused around inspiring others to accomplish their own “firsts.” Due to Cara’s willingness to use her voice and stand up, not only for herself, but for all of the women that will follow her, Cara’s year as Miss America turned out to be much more than that.

NICK HACKER

Nick Hacker serves as President/CEO of Guaranty and Title Co. Founded in 1955, Guaranty & Title is the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest title insurance and real estate closing company with operations in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana. Nick continues to drive new growth through strategic partnerships, acquisitions and leadership development within his team. Before joining Guaranty and Title, Nick spent three years in Washington, D.C., in Government Affairs. Prior to his time in Washington, D.C., he was a business development manager in the Red River Valley focused on real estate development. Nick served in the North Dakota State Senate from 2004-2008. While in the Senate he was Vice Chair of the Political Subdivision and Industry Business & Labor committee. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Real Estate from the University of North Dakota in 2005. His passion for service continues as Chair of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, Greater North Dakota Chamber Board, Delta Tau Delta Education Foundation, and several committees of the American Land Title Association.

LARRY C. SKOGEN

Dr. Larry C. Skogen began his tenure as BSCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sixth CEO in 2007. In June 2013, he became Acting Chancellor of the North Dakota University System. He then served as Interim Chancellor from November 1, 2013, until June 30, 2015, when he returned to BSC. Retired from a career in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Skogen has been a high school teacher and college faculty member in a variety of military and civilian institutions, including the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is author of works about federal Indian policies and the history of the American West. A native of Hettinger, Dr. Skogen has a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University, Tempe; an M.A. in history from the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg; and a B.S. in secondary education from Dickinson State University.

DAN LEINGANG

Dr. Daniel Leingang is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bismarck State College. He joined the faculty in 2000 as an assistant professor of mathematics and was appointed Dean of Academic Affairs in 2014 and later Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. He held that position until he was named Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2017. Born and raised in Mandan, N.D., Dr. Leingang has a B.A. in mathematics from Concordia College in Moorhead, M.N. He holds a M.S. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (Higher Education emphasis) from the University of North Dakota.

Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges. Graduates with preceding their names have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5, completed 12 or more semester hours in residence and have been enrolled either part-time or full-time.

BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT These students are receiving Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in Energy Management. The BAS degree requirements include completing a total of 120 semester hours of course work, with a minimum of 30 semester hours of upper division level courses, and at least 30 hours of the required semester hours from Bismarck State College. Associate in Arts and Associate in Science These degrees are awarded to students who are following programs similar to those of baccalaureate degrees. Both degrees are designed to meet basic requirements for general education, as well as to provide a beginning in preprofessional studies, with the Associate in Science intended for students going into science-related fields. The recipients of these degrees must satisfactorily complete 60 semester hours of course work and earn at least 120 honor points.
