Welcome We are kicking off our fall catalog with a note from one of our veteran instructors:
“
CRAIG TRIPLETT
I began my journey of T’ai Chi ten years ago, right here at BSC! I have been fortunate to have had two very encouraging instructors and both, in their own way, tried to talk me into teaching. I finally took their advice and started a few years ago and it has been a very rewarding experience. We are not just a classroom, we are a community of people who enjoy being together, learning from each other and forming lasting friendships - and enjoying the holistic benefits of T'ai Chi. The first thing most people notice as they learn the discipline of T’ai Chi is an improved sense of balance. T’ai Chi is what I call a gentle physical workout but a fairly strenuous mental exercise. For me the mental and spiritual benefits are as important as the physical. When COVID-19 shut down almost everything we lost our indoor practice venues. I know it's a small sacrifice, but my students and I really missed our T’ai Chi time, so as the weather warmed, we wanted to start meeting outside. In June we worked with Continuing Education and made a plan to come back home to BSC’s campus to begin practicing again, with proper social distancing! I truly appreciate that BSC has given me the opportunity to share my passion for T’ai Chi with the people of Bismarck and the surrounding areas.

Finding My Roots: A Journey to the Home Country
This class will retrace the journey of the instructor’s grandfather, Josef Holkup, from the Czech Republic to North Dakota, a journey like the one many of your ancestors made. We will show pictures that will help explain who they were and where they came from and the lure of owning land. We will touch on the harsh realities of homesteading in North Dakota. In 2011, the instructor visited the Czech Republic, meeting many relatives, traveling as “a local rather than as a tourist.” He saw the farmstead where his grandfather was born and a church nearly 1,000 years old that the family attended for hundreds of years. This presentation will use lecture, pictures and group discussion to help tell the story of our immigrant ancestors. 9/22 Tue 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Mark Holkup Fee: $15 Course ID: 7070020

This will require walking and standing for the two-hour tour. 9/30 Wed 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM ND Heritage Center Instructor: Kim Jondahl Fee: $25 Course ID: 7070004

US Navy and Naval Forces: An Introduction
Here is your chance to visit with a senior three star Vice Admiral in the Navy! Phil only recently left active duty as one of the top US Navy Flag officers, after a distinguished 36 year career at sea and many interesting assignments all over the world. A graduate of the US Naval Academy in 1977, Phil studied in France at the University of Strasbourg. In this lecture you will get a sense of the mission of the Navy, a look at Navy history, and what it’s currently doing. Ask Phil any question you would like about family separations, long deployments, raising 5 kids, hunting Russian submarines, flying in navy aircraft supporting our troops in Afghanistan, fighting fires, boarding and searching ships, transiting the Suez canal, the straits of Hormuz, across the Pacific (or Atlantic), and operating in the Norwegian sea in October. Phil was involved in many of the biggest naval operations in recent history and loved every minute. He’s looking forward to sharing some of his many stories and love of the sea. 10/26 Mon 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Phil Wisecup Fee: $10 Course ID: 7070028

This class will cover abandoned communities around the world. (U.S. not included – another class later.) Chosen in my international “Top 10” are places that I feel have fascinating stories about why they were abandoned…from economic decline, to wars, to natural disasters and pollution. I learned so much while researching and hope you will join me on this journey through history. 10/29 Thu 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Ann Vadnie Fee: $30 Course ID: 7070030

Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Catch 22
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was one of the most influential books written in the 19th century, and among the greatest in sales. The class will explore how this book helped to form attitudes towards abolition and how it came to symbolize for many the struggle facing America. When President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.” 10/13, 10/20, 10/27 (3xs) Tue 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Room 101 Instructor: Perry Hornbacher, Ph.D Fee: $30 Course ID: 7040015
Jimmy Carter: A Life of Ambition and Purpose
To a country still reeling from the twin blows of Vietnam and Watergate, Jimmy Carter was seen as a breath of fresh air in 1976. Carter’s meteoric rise to the presidency is one of the greatest triumphs in American political history. His overwhelming defeat four years later is, arguably, the worst humiliation ever suffered by any president. While Carter ultimately failed politically amid inflation, gas lines, and the Iranian hostage crisis, he did succeed in tackling some of the nation’s most intractable challenges. This course will use lecture, video, and class discussion to reassess this misunderstood president and highly complex man. 11/5, 11/12 (2xs) Thu 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Jason Matthews Fee: $45 Course ID: 7040014
Mike Nichols superbly directed this cinematic adaptation of Joseph Heller’s scathing black comedy, a tale of a small group of flyers in the Mediterranean in 1944. Starring: Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, Bob Newhart. Rated R. 9/18 Fri 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Course ID: 7000017
Bridge of Spies
In a dramatic thriller inspired by true events, Tom Hanks stars as James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a near impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U2 pilot. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Rated PG-13. 10/16 Fri 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Course ID: 7000016
The Bookshop
In a 1950s English town, a free-spirited widow follows her lifelong dream by opening a bookshop, spurring a cultural awakening over the objection of conservative locals. Starring Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy, Patricia Clarkson. Rated PG. 11/13 Fri 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Course ID: 7000012
testimonial I joined the OLLI Program in 2015, after retiring from my teaching career. I was concerned about adjusting to retirement, and a friend encouraged me to register for a class. I was immediately “hooked”! The idea of lifelong learning was very appealing, and I eagerly look forward to each new catalog. The talented instructors and the variety of classes offered is truly amazing. Another gratifying part of the program is the socialization aspect and making new friendships. My biggest disappointment of the COVID shutdown was the cancellation of the Spring OLLI classes. My sincere thanks to BSC and the staff who work very hard to manage this wonderful program for the community of Bismarck! – pat klein LOG ON & REGISTER TODAY >> bismarckstate.edu/OLLI
