Dear Howard University Family, Sometimes, the impact of an event resonates long after it ends, and we are all living through such a time. President Barack Obama’s oration to the graduating class of 2016 created this moment.

I have never been more proud to be a son of Howard! All our graduates -- more than 2,000 strong – and their families must feel especially blessed that theirs was the commencement when President Obama spoke. There is an interesting footnote, giving the University a new outlook on the symbols that represent this nation. President Obama signed law which makes the bison – yes, the mascot we associate with Howard University’s athletic eagle remains the national animal.)

Relive the Memories Commencement 2016 Once again, Howard University was at the center of history as the 44th president of the United States, Barack H. Obama, gave one of the most inspiring presidency at the University’s graduation ceremony on May 7.
The response to Howard’s 148th Commencement Convocation was spirited and global. Viewers in more than 81 countries tuned in to the live stream broadcast. The University reached more than 3 billion impressions in the media, including print, radio, online and television outlets.

Bison Gathering Isiah Leggett, Montgomery County, Maryland’s county executive, and wife Catherine hosted a fundraising social at their home in Maryland with many notable alumni, including Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker and Ambassador Horace G. Dawson. The Leggetts recently donated $25,000 to Howard’s School of Law, where he earned a law degree.

Howard Middle School’s Kathryn Procope Named Principal of the Year! Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science Head of School, Ms. Kathryn Procope, has been named a 2016 State Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary The program celebrates the achievements of middle school and high school principals who have proven successful in providing exceptional learning opportunities for students, in addition to demonstrating remarkable contributions to

Prior to assuming her role as head of school at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, Procope was principal at Friendship Collegiate Academy and Maya Angelou Public Charter School. Both schools are located in the District. In September Procope will be honored along other State Principals of the Year at the Principals Institute. “Being recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals is truly an honor. A principal provides a vision and guidance, but it is truly the teamwork of all stakeholders that equates to success. This award means that all of the educators, parents and students that I have had the honor to work with, are being recognized for their hard work and accomplishments,” stated Procope.

Frederick to serve on the Board of Advisors for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Howard Graduate Hayley King Wins Prestigious Rangel Fellowship Hayley King has been awarded a 2016 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship. She was one of 30 fellows selected nationwide. The Rangel Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and managed by the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University, supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue a career representing the U.S. Foreign Service. King graduated from Howard Summa Cum Laude in May with a degree in political science. Passionate about international and public affairs, King interned
Correspondence and the Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. She speaks Arabic and Spanish. With the help of the fellowship’s $95,000 of assistance over two years, King will pursue a dual master’s degree in international relations and public relations from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School and its S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She hopes to specialize in the Middle East and become Service. King will work for a member of Congress on international issues this summer. The State Department will send her to work at a U.S. embassy during the summer of 2017.
