Excellence at Howard HOWARD UNIVERSITY ALUMNA, CHANIQUA NELSON, NAMED RANGEL FELLOW Chaniqua Nelson (B.A. ’11; M.A. ’13) was awarded a 2018 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship. A native of Durham, North Carolina, she was one of 30 fellows selected from 60 interviewed finalists. The original pool of applicants was narrowed down from 540.

Affairs Center at Howard University, the Rangel Fellowship supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue a career representing the U.S. Foreign Service with up to $95,000 of graduate school assistance over two years.

With the academic, professional and financial support from the program, Fellows now serve as diplomats around the world, contributing to a more diverse representation and effective execution of U.S. foreign policy.

Unlike the more widely known American Rhodes Scholarship, which selects 32 U.S. scholars annually, in applying for the Jamaica and Commonwealth Rhodes Scholarship, students compete for a single opening.

Spencer was one of select candidates who earned this distinct honor from the original applicant pool.

2017 MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS

Howard University senior computer information systems major Simeon Kakpovi (B.B.A. ’18) of Silver Spring, Maryland—by way of Benin, West Africa— and acting major Mary Morris (B.A. ’18) of Philadelphia were named finalists for the 2018 Marshall Scholarship.

Kakpovi has built an extensive record of contributions to the tech field and cybersecurity, while Morris is an emerging scholar and practitioner using drama therapy for urban youth empowerment and development. Though not selected among this year’s 43-winner contingent, both Kakpovi and Morris are dynamic students who have indicated their appreciation for the academic experience, faculty instruction and support during the application process.

Kari Miller, Ph.D., and the Office of Scholars and Honors Development staff should be commended for introducing our students to the Marshall Scholarship and aiding them throughout the competitive process.

CARMEN CRUSOE NAMED SOUTH AFRICA FREDERICK DOUGLASS GLOBAL FELLOW Carmen Crusoe has been selected as one of the 10 students to represent Howard University in Cape Town, South Africa, during the summer of 2018.

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship is a nationwide initiative designed to break down the barriers of cost, curriculum and culture to make study abroad accessible to students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

Along with Project Passport, the fellowship is part of a strategic three-year partnership between CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) to increase study abroad at MSIs.

3-Peat: Howard Women’s Volleyball Locks Down MEAC Championship

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION MEETS NEW, RIGOROUS CAEP NATIONAL ACCREDITATION STANDARDS TO BETTER PREPARE TOMORROW’S TEACHERS The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, also known as CAEP, announced that Howard University’s School of Education is one of 43 providers from 22 states and the District of Columbia to receive accreditation for its educator preparation programs. The HUSOE is granted accreditation for seven years with no areas for improvement identified The fall 2017 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council increased to 101 for the total number of providers approved under the new CAEP teacher preparation standards—rigorous, nationally recognized standards that were developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.

This collaboration will allow District residents improved access to the quality health care they deserve.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY AND UNITY HEALTH CARE COLLABORATE TO ENHANCE WOMEN’S HEALTH CARE FOR DISTRICT RESIDENTS Howard University Hospital (HUH), Howard University Faculty Practice Plan (HUFPP), and Unity Health Care, Inc., (Unity) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop an integrated network that will deliver healthcare services to women in Washington.

The collaboration between HUH, HUFPP, and Unity will expand the number of obstetricians, labor and delivery hospital rooms and neonatal beds available for pregnant women in Washington, D.C. The increased capacity at HUH will benefit the 2,000 pregnant women seen at Unity each year as well as other patients served by the D.C.’s community health centers, specifically residents in Wards 7 and 8.

On Sunday, November 19, Howard University’s Women’s Volleyball team won its third consecutive MEAC tournament championship with a straight-set win over Florida A&M (FAMU).

The team also made its fourth straight appearance in the title match while becoming the first program since FAMU won nine straight from 2001-09, to win three consecutive MEAC titles.

As a result of the well-played season, Howard made its fourth NCAA appearance. MEAC Player of the Year Khaila Donaldson, along with AllConference selections Jessica Young and Tamia Dockery spearheaded the Bison attack on December 1.

The team (16-16) ended its season on a historic note by taking a set from the Nittany Lions. Pennsylvania State University’s, seven-time NCAA National Champions, has not lost an opening round set in 28 years until the Bison fought their way and tied the match after frame two.

#GivingTuesdayHU 2017 SUPPORT WAS EXTRAORDINARY Thank you to everyone who gave back on #GivingTuesdayHU! Together, we raised $224,606. Every dollar raised was generously matched with a dollar for student scholarships by alumni donors Irvin Reid, Ph.D. (BA ’63, MS ’66) and Pamela Reid, Ph.D. (BS ’67).

That’s a nearly $450,000 impact that will be felt across the Yard!

Howard and Unity have long fulfilled the role of providing care to the underserved in the Nation’s Capital. With the signing of the MOU, Howard and Unity’s collaboration will improve health equity for D.C. residents by increasing access to women’s health and specialty care.

The collaboration will enable HUFPP’s 175 faculty physicians, with varying specialties, and Unity, which has more than 150 primary care providers, to develop meaningful strategies to improve quality of care for residents east of the Anacostia.

Your school or college, the Office of Undergraduate Studies, The Writing Center, Special Student Services and the Counseling Center are a few of the many offices that offer services and programs that will facilitate your academic success.

Howard University was featured in the Fall Finale of NBC’s hit show This is Us and primetime television was exposed to a snippet of the undeniable excellence and need for HBCUs. The Howard University Men’s Basketball team, in conjunction with Full Court Press for ALS, dedicated the Dec. 4 match against the University of Pennsylvania to the awareness and fundraising initiatives around the crippling disease known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS.

A six-member team from Howard University won the fifth annual D.C. Public Health Case Challenge Grand Prize at the D.C. Public Health Case Challenge last month. The challenge aims to promote interdisciplinary, problem-based learning around a public health issue of importance to the Washington, D.C., community.

Howard Bison Football Head Coach Mike London was named American Football Coaches Association’s “Regional Coach of the Year.”

King shared that in raising an additional $150 million in funding from Emerson Collective, Ford Foundation, The Libra Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, MACRO can pump out four to six film and television projects annually.
