Dear Howard University Community, As I continue on a nearly three-decade journey at Alma Mater, I have witnessed the transformative process that has contributed to the development of the Howard University that exists today. Although the world around us is ever-changing, Howard University maintains its focus on providing access to academic excellence to those who otherwise may not be provided access to education. Howard remains the constant drum beat for social activism that must occur in this nation. We continue to exemplify the necessity for HBCUs, not only for persons of African descent but also for the world. Most importantly, we continue to lean on the support of students, faculty, staff and alumni to uphold our commitment to Excellence in Truth and Service. During the past academic school year, Howard University has welcomed guests from near and far who value the fervor with which they embrace their connection to Howard University. These guests included President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle
Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Ambassador Andrew Young, His Excellency Anthony Carmona, Goldman Sachs Executive Vice President Edith Cooper, Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett, Congressman John Lewis, award-winning actress Cicely Tyson and worldrenowned author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Their presence on our campus confirmed what we have known for nearly 150 years—that Howard University has served as a model institution that, against all odds, produces the future industry leaders and provocateurs of our time. I have always believed that anyone can come to Howard University and meet the world. That stood true for me when I set foot on the campus of this institution for the first time in 1988. At that time, I recall being inspired by the fact that medical trailblazers such as Dr. Clive O. Callender and Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, who have become my trusted mentors and advisers, once sat in the same classrooms as I did. I am even more inspired today, serving as president

of this institution, which has produced four Rhodes Trust Scholars, 10 Truman Scholars, two Marshall Scholars, more than 60 Fulbright Scholars, 22 Pickering Fellows, MEAC champions, Alternative Spring Break coordinators, student athletes, published authors and researchers. Because of Howard University, I am reminded each day that a journey is a walk through many disciplines. In the words of James Baldwin, “There is never time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment; the time is always now.”
Excellence in Truth and Service, Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA President
