Gift a Senior CAMPAIGN

Gift a Senior LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow Alumni:

I want to thank you for your support of the Gift a Senior campaign. Your generosity enabled 123 seniors to participate in Howard’s 147th Commencement Exercises. Over 1,000 alumni and friends of the University heard the Bison call and responded with donations in excess of $500,000. Your gift has forever changed the lives of these students and I applaud you for answering the call to help deserving students achieve their dreams.

In the words of one alum, “...I do not want any thanks directed to me personally. I do not want to be personally identified. Rather, tell the senior that this is the way of the Bison – to help their fellow deserving Bison in need; this is the Howard narrative. This is the legacy. This is the mission. And she or he should remember this; that they too someday 30 or 40 years in the future (or perhaps sooner) might well be in a position to carry out this legacy by helping a future well-deserved Bison in need. If they remember this and commit to this, then that’s all the thanks I need!!” However, as we prepare for the next academic year, I am reminded that financial need is the number one reason students are not able to complete their degree programs. The landscape of higher education is America is changing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for Fall 2014, the college enrollment for black students was 70.9% while the enrollment for their white counterparts was 67.3%. Yet the economic differences between these groups persist. About 59% of Howard University’s undergraduates are Federal Pell Grant eligible. This means that their family’s income is extremely low and in many cases, at or below the poverty line. Our percentage of high need students far outpaces our local peers whose next highest Pell Grant eligible percentage is only 15%. The University continues to position itself with the growing financial need of our students. We have responded in several ways including the following: • • • • •

Creating the HU Need-Based Grant program which provides a 100% match to the Federal Pell Grant for those with the highest need Implementing the Graduation and Retention Access to Continued Excellence (GRACE) program which provides the remaining tuition and mandatory fees for those students who are on track for graduation and who have the highest demonstrated need. Increasing the number of credit hours students may enroll in during the academic year at the same tuition rate from 36 to 42 while decreasing the number of credit hours needed for degree programs. Providing a tuition rebate incentive that gives seniors a 50% refund on direct payments made for their last semester if they graduate on-time or early. Launched a robust financial literacy and debt management program for all students and the three most recent graduating classes

According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, Howard University’s 4-year graduation rate is double that of African-American students nationwide. Howard University was built on the principles of access and opportunity and our ability to continue to deliver on this mission is critical. With your continued support, we can continue to address the financial needs of our students. To make a monthly re-occurring contribution please visit www.howard.edu/give and click on the gold “GIVE NOW” box on your left and complete the giving form. Please select “Bridging the Gap” as your gift destination. The full amount (100%) of your tax-deductible donation will go towards assisting students in financial need. Thank you for your continued support of Alma Mater. In Truth and Service, Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA President

Dear Donor, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your generosity in providing this scholarship to the students of Howard University. I am much honored to be one of the recipients of this award. I am currently a Senior Anthropology major, History minor here at Howard. This past summer, I participated in Archaeology in the Community’s Archaeology Landscape project, where I shared the story of the Freedmen’s Cemetery in Alexandria, VA through photography. I also assisted Mr. Joe Downer and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate with their Slave Cemetery Survey, where we excavated and located the grave shafts of many of the enslaved that once worked and resided at the estate. This upcoming summer, I plan on working at Smithsonian Institute in the Museum of Natural History and eventually moving to Southern California where my plans are to work as an Assistant Museum Curator for the Museum of Man in the infamous Balboa Park in San Diego, CA. This scholarship will greatly assist me not only in being able to graduate but also toward those set goals I listed above. May 9, 2015 Dear Gracious Donors, From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank you for sponsoring me as I complete my undergraduate education. Lord knows I have been tried with tribulation after tribulation. By the grace of God I was able to return to Howard University after six years of struggling to complete my education. I told myself to just complete my school work, I could not afford to worry about working because my education meant that much to me, that I would complete my degree homeless and hungry. Things have been soo tough and soo lonely for me that I had no one to invite to graduation, but God. I want to thank you for your kindness and generosity, because it has deeply touched my heart. This is a sentiment I will never, ever forget. I MADE IT, IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING AGAINST ME AND THOSE ROOTING FOR MY FAILURE!!! This is truly a milestone for me, because every trial and every obstacle was against me this year. In spite of all the negativity that tried to consume me, God allowed me to persevere, even when it felt like it was more than I can bear. I was blessed to have alumni like you, which had enough compassion for me and our illustrious University; to reach back and pull me forward, to allow me to create a legacy like those before me that strive to improve not only their circumstances, but the communities’ around them. I am eternally grateful. I wish to translate that sentiment through this letter. Through your kindness I am graduating with a spirit renewed and a clean slate that allows me to focus on career advancement moving forward. I hope I am expressing the tremendous works you have done for me. I have been crying all morning because the grace of God has been soo good to me, even when I saw no way, you and God made a way. THANK YOU. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, AND THE DEPTHS OF MY SOUL. I never could have made it, with God and the compassion he inspires in others. Thank you for inspiring me one last time. Even when I feel alone, I know I am not alone and I have a family of kind, kindred spirits that continue to watch over me and keep me encouraged. Thank you. I am eternally grateful and will make something of myself so that I can do the exact same thing for another young woman that you have done for me. Thank you my fellow bison. I’m writing this letter with gratitude to acknowledge the Alumni for their integrity and adhering to ethics for our alma mater.

When wishing for something that will have an impact on helping one move upwardly mobile and it coming true does not happen to often. There are many reasons our community has a hard time making progress, and one of those is not enough people who made it give come back to help others get further away from the bottom. Whether it be financing someone’s education or simply educating. The donors of “Paying it Forward”, have made a difference at this moment in my life. A huge bourdon has been taken from me and has affected me in the best way possible. Making it easier for me to accomplish goals sooner than expected and help with the progress of upward mobility that I will be forever grateful for and knowing that my fellow alumni help make it possible to move forward. The integrity itself has had a major affect on what it means to be an Alumni of Howard University that will stick with me and push me to help and give back however I can to strengthen not only our alma matter but our community as well. Thank you. Sincerely, Darron Haygood

Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for your timely assistance. The Alumni Gift to Seniors is a blessing, especially when you realize how many lives you have affected. This gift came at a time when I realized there was no more I could personally do, the only way I could achieve this goal myself was to either hit the lottery or sacrifice necessities. As the first person in my immediate family to graduate from college, it truly would have been a tragedy not to be able to participate in the graduation activities. When I got the news today about your generosity, I was driving down the road on my way to work and I nearly broke down into tears out of shock and relief at the end of an intense situation. I immediately called my mom, who has been a trooper through all of this, being so excited and ready to see one of her children finally graduate and the next moment so sad and disappointed to hear that due to our DocuSign Envelope ID: B03B7BF9-7094-471A-85A3-E2F203087C6B finances we could not participate. Even when faced with this sad news she was extremely supportive and seeking ways to help, as well as letting me know that if she could not see me graduate she was still proud of my achievement. When I let her know that I had received a blessing from you all in the form of full payment of my balance, she was also driving on the highway and I could hear her crying and praising the Lord as she expressed her heartfelt thanks. She wanted me to ensure that you all know that you are truly blessed, to be in a position to help students achieve their academic goals when they have no other options left and to actually follow through is an amazing testament to the blessing you are. She also wanted me to make sure you knew that as a family we are going to ensure that the blessing we received today does not stop with us, but will be paid forward to more students with similar circumstances. This gift will ensure that not only will I be able to participate in Graduation proceedings, but I will also have access to transcripts, my diploma, and the door to my masters and eventually my doctorate is now open. This gift means so much to me and my family. There are not enough words to express how grateful we are for your generosity.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee, Thank you for the opportunity to receive the Donor Scholarship- Alumni Gift to Seniors this year. I am writing this letter to express my gratitude to the committee for selecting me to receive this scholarship. I am honored and very fortunate that you have chosen me to receive this award. A little about myself, I am the youngest of three brothers. I am from Honduras and came to the United States when I was eleven years old. I am the first person in my family to graduate from college. School was never an easy subject because when I first came, I knew nothing of English and I struggled in school. By the time I got to high school I was more comfortable with my English. While in high school I met my high school sweetheart who is now my wife of 16 years and we have three amazing children together. When my wife and I were just 18, still in high school, we had our first daughter together, I had to drop out and take responsibility and get a job to be able to support my family. After the birth of my daughter I knew that I had to go back to school, get a better education and give my child a life I did not have. This award will benefit my family and I, it will take a weight off our shoulders. Accepting this scholarship will allow myself to graduate with my fellow classmates in my class. It has definitely been a struggle being a full time student and also only relying on one income. Now that I have finished my studies, I have accomplished much more than I ever anticipated and I will be able to apply my knowledge and skills into the next phase of my life. Best part is that I will have my children and wife seeing me in my cap and gown, watching me receive my degree because they have been supportive every step of the way. Overall, I really appreciate everything the committee has done for me. Without your help, nothing of this would have happened. You have given me hope into finally achieving my dreams and succeeding in life. On behalf of my family and I, we are sincerely grateful to each and every one of you. Sincerely, Jose Maldonado

May 12. 2015 To the Howard University Graduation Donors:

Thanks to you, I am busy planning my future. Because of your generosity I am able to graduate Howard University and pursue my goals of obtaining my master’s degree. It has been a long an joyous road for me at the Mecca- I have gained much knowledge of myself and my community, and I am looking forward to the day I can step in as an alumni help future Bison as you have helped me. As a first generation college student I have faced many obstacles that should have prevented me from graduating. From finances, to having a son my sophomore year, spending six years in undergrad, to wondering how I was going to obtain $7,000 to clear my final semester, I should not be able to write this letter. However, because of you, I can. I will never be able to look at my degree without thinking of your generosity to me and the other graduates. I sincerely thank you. Yours in Truth and Service, John A. I am humbled and grateful that I was selected to receive such an award as this, for I am sure that there were many other candidates that were highly qualified. My name is Sandy Merilan, and I am a Senior Political Science Major from Brooklyn NY. I will be graduating in December 2015. Even though I am not an education major, I have been teaching in some way, shape, or form since high school. I have been a mentor for a local nonprofit and two part time jobs on to help pay for my college application fees. It was a wonderful experience; from it I learned the importance of time management, and what it means to really educate someone, or impart knowledge and understanding on someone else so that they might not only understand your point of view, but also be able to formulate their own through critical thinking. Coming from a blue collar household, I understood the importance of hard work and determination, albeit my journey through the public education system was not without it's fair share of obstacles, setbacks, and challenges. My family did not have a lot of money, but I was never felt like I was in lack, because my parents and grandmother worked hard so the next generation (myself and my sister) could grow and exude excellence. Not receiving a freshman scholarship from Howard University, at the time seemed like a setback, but I have come to understand that it was something that allowed me to appreciate the fruits of hard labor, and it was a circumstance that pushed me to always do my best, and walk and work in excellence.

Thank You, Sandy Merilan

Dear Donors of the HU family,

It is with great joy that I write this letter of thanksgiving for being chosen as a recipient of the 2014-2015 Donor Scholarship! Thank you for supporting my educational efforts!

This scholarship is very important to me. Finding avenues of Financial Aid is a very difficult, arduous, yet extremely necessary process. As a music student, the avenues that exist to assist in funding my education are particularly hard to find. This award has afforded me the opportunity to advance my educational career and will have an immense impact on my future. Moreover, your contribution to my study is further testament that giving is an essential part of our responsibility to this world. In the same way, I want to give back what the world has given me through music. I thank you for the opportunity to do that.

In closing, I would like to reiterate that I am tremendously grateful for this scholarship. I’m committed to making practical use of this investment, and I hope to make you proud of my endeavors! Sincerely,

Mikaela Carlton

Your support was vital in my journey to graduation. The alumni gift was very much appreciated and I cannot express how thankful I am for such a generous donation. My journey through Howard has been extraordinary. I fell into financial trouble during my junior year and had to take some time away from the university. This crushed me because I thought that I wouldn’t be able to graduate from Howard. My family banded together to bring our story to the light and together we were able to raise just enough to get me back to Howard. The experience of leaving and coming back has truly changed me and made me a stronger person. After returning to school, I received a lot of help in readjusting to school life from the faculty and staff. I feel so thankful and blessed for all of the help I have received from everyone in the Howard community. As a political science major, I have many option for possible career paths. I plan on obtaining a law degree and pursuing a career related to global security and public policy. Words cannot express how honored I feel to receive this gift from the alumni. As a new member of the alumni, I will work hard to show the Howard community that I was worthy of this investment. This donation will help me as I make my final payments for my last semester at Howard University. I am truly blessed to have received this donation.

Greetings,

Words truly cannot express my gratitude for the enormity of the generosity you have shown me during a time of much hardship; though I will provide a valiant effort to try. I am overwhelmed and overjoyed to learn that you have contributed to ensuring my graduation from Howard University. These past six years have been challenging beyond belief and I am grateful and overwhelmed to have finally reached my destination. I did not expect to grow as much as I have from my experiences at Howard University, but I appreciate every tough lesson I have learned and don’t regret a single failure. I have been working hard to ensure that I would graduate, but I didn’t expect to walk this year since I still had a remaining balance on my student account. My family was disappointed, but understanding and supportive. With the news of your generosity, my family and I are elated and optimistic about my next step in life. Your contribution has not only enabled me to complete my matriculation through Howard University, but has provided me with a greater sense of hope. A sense of hope that you believe in me; you believe in a young lady, that couldn’t afford to pay for college but maintained a determination to complete the journey set before her. You have reaffirmed my faith that through hardship, hard work is still honored. My faith has truly been restored not only in people, but it has also been restored in God, and in myself. I now know and understand that I was made for this journey, I was made to complete it, and I was made to succeed. Thank you again for restoring a hope in me, for pushing me forward, and helping me along my way. It is with this statement that I give a pledge to always work my hardest in order to bring honor to your generosity, to become a success in field of medical research, and to always give back with the same generosity that you have given me in order to propel others forward.

With Thanks and Appreciation,

Alumni and Friends Gift to Seniors, Three hours ago almost all of my faith was gone. I just knew that I would not walk across the stage. My Howard journey has been filled with many highs and many lows and I am grateful to my Bison family because they have been there along the way in many shapes and forms to help me along the way. That is one of the things that I am most grateful for, the amazing people that I have met along my journey and the interactions and love that I have felt. Thank you so much to the Howard Alumni and Friends. I cannot thank you all enough. I can now move forward and achieve in my life.

The Alumni Gift to Seniors campaign has made a tremendous difference in my life and in the lives of many of my graduating peers. To be gifted with this scholarship at such a time of need has humbled me and served as an additional reminder to truly value my education and use it to its upmost potential so that one day, I may be in position to give back to future Bison as has been done for me. As a first generation college graduate, being able to complete my Bachelor requirements at Howard has not only made my family proud, but also set an example for my siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins who also have dreams of pursuing their education. Despite financial hardship, my mother has worked hard to ensure that I have had the mindset to persevere no matter what. In the fall of 2013 she suffered a serious spinal injury, which caused her to be unable to work for an extended period of time. Your generous contribution filled the void by picking up where she left off. I ensure you that your investment in my future will be well worth it. As an Administration of Justice major, I intend to enroll in a dual degree program to earn my J.D./MBA in sports management and go on to become one of the few female African American attorney/agents to professional athletes. I have a sincere desire to dominate an industry not necessarily designed for young women like myself, and I hope my efforts and the efforts of other ambitious women like me will also encourage other young women to pursue unconventional careers. I have been a full-time student throughout my two years of graduate study at Howard University. Working full-time and going to school full-time was very challenging. I remember the times when I felt that I could not last another day. However, I continued to push forward. I really appreciate the scholarship. This scholarship is important to me because now I can focus on obtaining the study materials for the licensure exam. I will also be able to pay for my licensure exam. This will have a major impact on my education and future. I say this because obtaining a licensure is very important to me and to the field of social work. Since my concentration is mental health, I believe that a licensure would allow me to work directly with chronically mentally ill individuals and would allow me to make a difference in their lives. I really appreciate this scholarship and I am very thankful. I am committed to making practical use of this investment. Sincerely, Shaista Pirzada

It is with a plethora of gratitude that I accept the financial gift for seniors that you have donated. My experience at Howard University has been a fascinating journey in which I have grown a lot. Your assistance comes at a time of need and is undeniably an answer to my prayers. Please allow me to tell you about myself and express my gratitude for your kindness. I began my education as a freshman at Howard University in the fall of 2009. Entering into life in college was admittedly a change of pace to my life from when I was a high school senior in Port St. Lucie, Florida. After a series of unfortunate events during my freshman year I was unable to maintain a 3.0 GPA and therefore lost my freshman scholarship. Without this aid, I was forced to stay at home to work and save money for school. Determined to return to Howard, I packed my bags and left Florida one day without telling my parents and enrolled in classes to finish what I started. With determination and help from the university I am able to stand where I am today, ready to walk and receive my diploma. In order to complete my degree, I took out federal loans. This scholarship will help relieve some of the financial burdens that were necessary to take on to achieve my goal. I am honored to be recognized by the Howard University Scholarship Committee and I look forward to advancing my career while holding on firmly to and being a part of Howard University’s legacy. This donation has allowed me to think much less about the student loans that I will have to pay back and more about what I have been able to accomplish with the help of everyone at Howard. I will also use the fund to help pay back some of the student loans I took out to pay for tuition. Please allow me to say thank you one more time, thank you. Sincerely,

I was filled with so much joy and happiness as I found out about my selection for this scholarship. Upon receiving my Bachelor’s degree in 2013 from Howard University, I decided to transition into the field of Social Work: Family and Child Welfare. Recently, I received my Masters degree in Social Work! Of course, the question that will arouse is, “What’s your next step now that you have obtained your Masters degree?” Well, as a former collegiate basketball player I plan on incorporating my basketball experiences and social work. My long-term career goal include starting a non-profit organization for underprivileged children that will give tools needed to be successful in life, while excelling in their future endeavors. I plan to incorporate sports into this nonprofit organization, which will give the children an active outlet and positive social experiences. Through the use of sports children will learn about healthy habits, self-discipline, sportsmanship, improving their mental well-being, and social skills and teamwork. In addition, children will have exposure to positive role models, creating an encouraging environment and instilling them with values needed to succeed in life. By awarding me the Alumni Gift to Seniors scholarship, you have lightened my burden which allows me to focus more on my career path as a Social Worker. Dear Alumni and Friends Gift to Seniors: My name is Teyana Reed and I am a graduate of Howard University. I am writing this letter to show my appreciation for your generous contribution towards my tuition. The Alumni and Friends Gift to Seniors scholarship has given me the opportunity to be financially cleared by the university and attend the commencement ceremony.

I chose Health Management as my profession because I would like to attend medical school and open up my own practice one day. This degree gives me the qualifications needed to run my own healthcare facility. This scholarship means so much to me because it is giving me the start to my medical career. At Howard University I was able to participate in organizations as well as in my community. I am a member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc. With this organization I was able to volunteer at a local food bank, participate in walks for Autism and raise money for women with breast cancer. In addition to community service I have outstanding academic achievements. Not only am I a graduate from Howard University, but I have also earned the status of Magna Cum Laude. It has been a privilege to graduate from this university as well as receiving a degree with honors.

The Alumni and Friends Gift to Seniors scholarship has helped to ease any financial burdens, giving me the chance to enjoy my academic achievements. I am thanking you once again for your donation. This scholarship will help me to become the great health care professional that I have always wanted to be. I am committed to show you that your investment is being well used.

Alumni Gift to Seniors Office of Financial Aid Howard University 2400 Sixth Street, NW Washington, DC 20059 Dear Howard University Alumni, Firstly, thank you for your funding in my education. I came to Howard University five years ago with a dream. A dream of graduating with a degree from one of the most prestigious higher education institutes in the United States. Although, I am at the finish line, the journey has been a tough one. I came to Howard University in 2010, knowing my parents could only fund less than 5% of my education. This created one of the most stressful situations facing my arrival as a freshman. I did not know how I would purchase books, items for my dorm, even personal essentials. I began to pray and wait patiently as my financials changed everyday. Through the grace of God, every semester , I was blessed with financial aid; including grants and federal loans, even scholarships from organizations I joined. I am very honored and ecstatic to be one of the recipients of this award. Growing up in a single parent home, I watched my mother work extremely hard to make ends meet; which made me realize from a young age how important a college education is. I rely on financial aid which consist of grants and student loans to help finance my education. Receiving this scholarship has helped me reduce my monetary burdens, as I am now financially clear to graduate. I will be the first person in my family to have a college education, and I hope to set a fine example for my younger sister, Chyna. Graduating from Howard University has been a dream of mine since I was a child, as many alumni from Howard excel in their career paths. I grew up in Dallas, Texas, where I was not exposed to scholars who I could culturally identify with and I knew that I would gain that experience and intellect at Howard. Currently I am a graduating Senior with a degree focus in Fashion Merchandising. Upon the completion of my degree, I will pursue a career as a Men’s Fashion Buyer. I hope to go out into the world to continue the legacy of Howard University, that many before me created. Once again, thank you for your support in helping students like myself achieve academic goals at Howard University. Your generosity truly makes a difference. Sincerly, Chase Walker

I am humbled and grateful that I was selected to receive such an award as this, for I am sure that there were many other candidates that were highly qualified. My name is Alexander G. Matthews, and I am a Senior Psychology and Spanish double major, from Reisterstown, Maryland that will be graduating in this year 2015. Even though I am not an education major, I have been teaching in some way, shape, or form since high school. I taught karate after school and on Saturdays in order to help pay for my college application fees. I would like to offer my thanks again for granting me this scholarship, because I will now be able to complete my Senior year of college with minimal financial worry, and for that I am eternally appreciative. This award was truly a blessing! “When one door closes another one opens! Sincerest thanks,

Words can’t explain how much this scholarship means to me and how my family and I appreciate your care and contributions. Originally, I am from Brooklyn New York. I made the decision to attend Howard University after a brief visit during my senior semester in High School. During my visit, I viewed testimonials from students, mostly school of business Team leaders. All of whom were well polished with confidence that shined brighter than the sun. I remember thinking, “These will be my colleagues one day”. This was an amazing moment for me because I realized that the same people who are standing in front of me right now are going to go on and accomplish great things in this world. I wanted to be apart this. I wanted to surround myself with like-minded individuals that would push me to my full potential. After a disagreement with my father at the end of my freshman year, my dad decided that he would no longer provide for me or pay for my education. Because of this I was forced to take care of myself without the help of family. The following semester I enrolled in 21 credit hours, while working two jobs averaging 50hrs/per week in order to survive. To my surprise, at the end of this semester I attained close to a 4.0 gpa (3.73 exactly) empowering me to keep fighting for my degree. Even though I had two jobs, my income did little to help with paying for my education. Semester after semester, I worried if I will be able to return to Howard University because of financial circumstances. It is now the end of my senior year and I have completed all of my academic requirements. However, I have a balance on my account of $8,980.38. Devastated I thought I would not be able to walk. I was sad that my family wouldn’t be able to witness there first college graduation and a first generation college grad. The bridge the gap scholarship has honestly been a blessing to me and my family. Because of your heaven sent scholarship I will be able to walk and stand tall, as a proud graduate of Howard University class of 2015! Sincerely, DeVaughn O. Hodge

May 1, 2015 Howard University Scholarship Committee Office of Financial Aid Howard University 2400 Sixth Street, NW Washington, DC 20059 Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee:

I am writing to you to express my gratitude and pure gratefulness, for choosing me as a recipient of the Donor Scholarship. Thank you Howard University Scholarship Committee for supporting and investing in my education at the illustrious Howard University. Trying to come up with an adjective to describe how I feel right now, can not be done. All I can say is thank you! I am a Health Management major, who’s ultimate dream is to help countries of extreme poverty, develop health care systems & provide education and awareness to them. This scholarship is very important to me because, like a lot of students, I did not know how I was going to finish paying for my education. My older sister recently was diagnosed with Lupus, which was a shock to my family. Even more of a shock when we found out she needed to get both her hips replaced while she was in between jobs and had no health insurance at the time. Needless to say, my family was placed in a financial hardship. This scholarship is right on time. Upon receiving my B.S., I can proudly say, I will be graduating the illustrious Howard University with a full-time position. I was recently offered a position at the Children’s National Health System, better known as the Children’s Hospital. I plan to gain as much experience as possible, climbing the ranks of success while working there. However, I do plan to further my education to obtain a Master’s degree in Pubic Health. I am more than honored to be a recipient of this award and for this it is certain that this gracious contribution is not in vain. You donated your money to a deserving, hardworking, and dedicated individual. I am so thankful. This kind act has inspired me to return the favor to a student of Howard University once I become an official alumni May 9, 2015! Sincerely,

To the Alumni Donor Scholarship, My name is Chidere Wilkins-Agomo and I will be an official Howard Alum on May 8th, 2015 because of your gift. You have sewn a seed into the life of young woman whose journey to Howard was nothing short of a miracle. Through all of the adversities, I believed that my goal of being a Howard graduate was attainable. The Alumni Donor Scholarship will not only allow me to receive my diploma, but walk across the stage with my mother as my number one cheerleader. My mother and I have struggled throughout this entire year to pay for school. We were unsure if she would be able to afford to see me walk and accept my diploma. My journey at Howard has strengthened me in such an enormous way. I know that the support, the drive to never give up, and the love that the Mecca has given me will always be with me. I can’t wait to pay it forward and do the same for a fellow Bison. A bigger and brighter future is all that awaits. Thank You So Very Much, Chidere Wilkins-Agomo

To Howard University’s Alumni Association, Hello everyone, I am Shelyne Jones, a graduating senior, Administration of Justice major, Psychology minor, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania writing to you all about a beautiful late April day. On that day, I received one of the best phone calls in a long time that has put one of the biggest smiles in my life on my face, and that is all because of the members of Howard University’s Alumni Association. Thanks to all of your consideration, kindness, and generosity I now have the burden of an outstanding balance that was keep me from walking across that stage in May, lifted off of my shoulders, and I cannot express my gratitude enough. As I am sure you all can remember, graduation season is among the most exhilarating yet stressful times of a person’s life, whether it be for family, academic, or financial reasons. Fortunately, when one of those stressors can be controlled or eliminated, that means that you are one stepper closer to your goal of obtaining your undergraduate degree, from Howard University nonetheless, making this whole journey truly worth it. Though this journey may have taken me five years to complete, I will be ending it with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Administration of Justice, ready to help others, in a way that I am not completely sure about just yet, but I am confident that I will figure it out soon enough. I just want to thank you all for giving me the means, so that I can have the opportunity to be put in position to make the difference I wish to make. As I said before, I really cannot express enough as to how appreciative I am to you all for helping me close this chapter in my life. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I will not ever forget this and once I am able to do the same, trust and believe that I will. Forever grateful to Howard University for the experience and to the members of the association for helping conclude my journey here. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU again. Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee,

I would first like to thank you so much for your support for my education. This open opportunity has been such a blessing for my family and I. Words cannot begin to explain how grateful I am for this moment of hope. I am and will be the first from my family to graduate from college. I have 3 younger siblings that have been looking up to me as a positive role model for years. At the same time showing them guidance, while setting the tone to create a path for success for them to follow. This point in time has been nothing less than a special achievement not only for me, but for those that are counting on me at home. We all are truly appreciative for your financial support that you are willing to provide. Although athletics has paved the way for most of my collegiate career, I have reached a place where I need more than my athletic ability. I plan to expand my knowledge within my career field, which is Sports Management. One day I plan on managing my very own indoor sports facility. Along the way I would also love to begin coaching high school softball, even if starting as a volunteer/assistant coach.

In closing, I would just like to reiterate on how grateful I am. This will be and is such an absolute blessing to more of my family than I. I cannot express in lesser words on the humility covering me. Thank you again for you time and consideration. I am willing to make use practically of your investment. Sincerely,

I thank you all for donating as much as you all could because myself and many classmates were in a very tough position and love from fellow Bison have gotten us through. The love that one receives from a fellow Bison is a love one cannot find anywhere. We are family. We are strong. We are a united front. I am forever grateful because without you all and your help and dedication, I would not be receiving this degree. Thank you is just not enough, but thank you, very, very much.

This scholarship is important to me because I do not know what I would have done had I not been able to graduate on time. I have been accepted into a Masters program at Georgia State University and would have been extremely disappointed had I not had the chance to attend in the Fall.

I am utterly appreciative of your love, care and donation to me and other seniors in the same position. I could not have done this without you all in more ways than one

I would like to offer my thanks again for granting me this scholarship, because I will now be able to complete my Senior year of college with minimal financial worry, and for that I am eternally appreciative. This award was truly a blessing! “When one door closes another one opens! Sincerest thanks,

May 14th, 2015 Dear “Alumni and Friends Gift to Seniors, This semester has been the hardest semester, in terms of obstacles, that I have ever encountered. In spite of all the obstacles I have encountered, the best is YET to come. After receiving the heart chilling phone call hearing the voicemail, saying that I received money to pay my balance in full, I was in awe and excited because that was another load of stress taken off of me. As I explained to my friends, and have heard others who deemed never to give back to Howard University after their fair share of troubles, I realized that this is what we as Alumni are here for. For a student like me, who has exhausted all of her options in paying for school. I truly appreciate the kind and warm gesture that you all have offered to me. It is without a doubt that this will pay off. As I venture off and continue my dreams to medical school, I will continuously think and thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to be able to receive this blessing from you all. In summation, I thank you all and everyone involved in allowing myself, as well as others in my class of 2015, to be able to be great and continue to be great by paying off mine and others balances. Through faith I shall continue to succeed. Bless your hearts !

Sincerely, Kiarah Pryce Howard University Class of 2015

Alumni Gift To Seniors Office of Financial Aid Howard University 2400 Sixth Street NW Washington, DC 20059 Dear Alumni Gift To Seniors, As I write this letter, I am fighting back tears from the reality of being a Spring 2015 graduate of this illustrious university. Words cannot begin to express my gratitude for this gift you have given me. It is with a sincere heart that I say thank you for awarding me with this scholarship to pay off my remaining financial balance with the university. Your altruism allows me to be financially cleared with the university which also grants me clearance to graduate in May. During my matriculation at Howard, I have experienced many financial struggles. Through the grace of God and my undeniable faith in his work, I have been able to overcome every single one leading up to this very moment. From having to take out an $11,000 private loan on top of my student loans freshman year, to not having to take out any loans my senior year, I am a testament of hard work, determination, and God’s unwavering love. Since my biggest dream is to be a doctor, I try to remain positive and never let finances become a determinant of how far I can go. I know medical school is an expensive endeavor but this scholarship shows me that anything is possible and what is meant to be will always come to fruition. I truly appreciate this scholarship you all have awarded to me. By relieving me of my financial obligations, I no longer have to stress about how my family and I were going to come up with the money in time to pay it off. Both my family and I are extremely grateful for your charitable assistance.

Dear Alumni and Friends:

The purpose of this letter is to accept the scholarship that was given to senior students. I am completely humbled to receive this donor scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to advance my knowledge in my major of financial studies.

As stated by the notable Thomas A. Edison, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. This quote reflects the resilient spirit that continues to push me every single day. Through my tenure at Howard University, I have met many trials and tribulations. Those adversities have given me the education to prevail through any circumstances that comes my way. Upon graduation, I will be receiving a degree in Bachelors of Business Administration with a concentration in finance. Post graduation, I plan to fearlessly start up my own companies and give back to the Howard University community as it has done for me. Thank you for this donor scholarship. I am forever grateful.

Howard University Alumni Howard University 2400 Sixth Street, NW Washington, DC 20059 Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee: This letter is to express my appreciation to the Alumni donating to the seniors for their wonderful support to me in this very difficult time of my education. I am a Biology major entering my final year with the intentions of furthering my education in research. Last academic year was particularly difficult for my family since there were two of us in college. We have had to make a lot of adjustments and would have had to tighten up even further. This scholarship therefore will greatly help alleviate some of the financial stress and help me concentrate on my course work and research for graduation. I believe I can achieve anything I put my mmd and effort to. I work hard towards that goal and the scholarship will make it possible for me to turn that handwork into a reality. The Howard University Scholarship Committee has made my final year at Howard University possible and for that I am very grateful. Sincerely

Office of Financial Aid Howard University 2400 Sixth Street, NW Washington, DC 20059 Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee, My name is Dominique Diggs. I am graduating on May 9th with my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Afro-American Studies. I am writing this letter to your organization to express just how appreciative I am of this scholarship opportunity to clear me financially from my university. I would like to thank you for providing me with a donor scholarship that paid off the remainder of my spring 2015 balance. With this scholarship, I was able to receive financial clearance from Howard and I was granted permission to participate in the commencement exercises. When I came to Howard in August of 2011, my parents had a Florida pre-paid college plan that they assumed would cover my tuition at Howard for my entire freshman year. When they arrived at the Financial Aid office, they learned that their 10 years of savings only covered one semester of tuition — and it barely met that goal. From this realization, my father prepared me for the fact that I would have to take out student loans in order to help myself get through the next four years. He also informed me that I would have to possibly take on a part-time job in order to support myself since I was so far away from home. Therefore, throughout my matriculation, I have been a part time employment at two different establishments in order to keep money in my pocket. For the past two years, I’ve not only had a part time job but I also work under Howard Student Employment as the Managing Editor for the school’s newspaper. Alongside this, I have had a summer internship over the past three years that supplied me with a stipend that I save throughout the summer in order to help my parents with my balance for my account. When I was a summer teaching fellow with Uncommon Schools this past summer in Brooklyn, I was able to save up enough money to make a $1,500 payment to my fall tuition.

I currently receive two paychecks that I receive biweekly. With these, I pay my own rent for an apartment off-campus and I supplement my own grocery bill and purchase any clothing that I need. My parents have tried their absolute best to help me through college and I really appreciate them for that. As I have been offered a full-time teaching position with Excellence Boys Middle Academy starting August 3rd, I desperately needed for my account to be cleared by the time that I receive my diploma from Howard. With your scholarship money, I was able to not only be financially cleared but the great burden that was hanging on my shoulders for the past three months has finally been lifted. I am extremely grateful to everyone on this committee for this gift. Once again, I truly appreciate your organization for granting me this opportunity.

Sincerely,

I am a senior at Howard University and now officially a graduate. Today, May 8th, I received an email notifying me that Howard Alumni have helped me complete my financial requirement. Tears of happiness rolled down my face knowing that Alumni of the prestigious University believed in helping someone like myself. These four years have truly been my most difficult years: I have encountered financial struggles, my parents’ divorce, and on top of that the discovery that my mother became legally blind due to diabetes. So for a while hopelessness was in the air. However, my desires to persevere and fight have brought me this far. I do not believe any words or sentences formed could truly encompass what I feel right now. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, because without you all, I would not be able to pursue my future endeavors and dream of becoming a doctor. Dear Howard University Scholarship Committee,

Thank you. The day before I found out I received the The Alumni Gift To Seniors Scholarship I sat in the Financial Aid office pleading with them to let me at least participate in graduation, and to my dismay they told me no. I couldn’t believe that after four years and all of my hard work I wasn’t going to graduate with my classmates. That was Wednesday. Thursday, I’m on the bus to New York, still wondering where this money is going to come from, and how to tell my mother I wouldn’t be walking across the stage next weekend. Then, I checked my email, and from Baltimore to New York it was a smooth ride. Literally all I could do was repeatedly thank the Lord. I didn’t know they gave scholarships this late in the year! This truly is a blessing, and testimony that there are still generous people in this world who want to see young black women succeed. Thanks to you, I will be walking across that stage at Crampton Auditorium and receiving my degree for Bachelor of Fine Arts. I don’t know how I became so blessed and I am truly grateful you were able to pull me out of the tunnel at this moment in time. I’ve worked hard these past four years, I wanted to walk…. and because of you I will be doing just that on May 9. This experience and your actions have surely changed my life forever. Thank you again, and may God send you many blessings.

I am a prospective graduating senior in Howard’s 5 year professional architecture degree program. I have an interest in designing ADA accessible homes and design sustainability. I just completed a 21 credit hour semester with hopes in raising enough money to finish my studies and participate in this Spring’s graduation ceremony. Thanks to you, I am able to move forward with this unbelievable opportunity.

By awarding me this scholarship, you have resolved my financial burden which allows me to focus on how I can become successful to where one day, I pay it forward. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. One day I hope to inspire a student through my sincere generosity just as you have inspired me.

Sincerely,

Gift a Senior Skyler Ford

Dear Blessed Individual! It is hard for me to found the words to really express how much of a blessing that I just experienced when I got word that I had received a donor scholarship to cover my remaining balance. It was a constant thought in my head that I would have to alter my pans in order to pay for my summer class. As I am with my family celebrating it is like a weight I didn’t even know that I was carrying has been lifted. I am a first generation college student. It is only through the miracle of receiving a tuition scholarship to the prestigious Howard University that I have reached this point. It seems fitting that another miracle has occurred which reaffirms that blessing happens during the time of joy and reflection that is Graduation. While you remain anonymous I truly am thankful for your assistance in shaping my story and Howard Journey. With Deep Gratitude, Esau White

To: Howard University Alumni: I am so thankful for the generosity of our Howard University alumni. Without supporters like you, I wouldn’t have been able to graduate with my degree. Being an untraditional student at Howard University, I have been always worried about how I was going to fund my college education at my age of 52 years. I am very grateful that I would be able to move forward in my new career. Our school is not only great because of the education we receive, it is through the legacy of our alumni and trustees who help students excel in college by minimizing the financial burden. Without donations from our alumni, I know that I would not have been able to be financially cleared to receive by degree. I am so thankful and blessed to have attended Howard University. I am so glad I never gave up like I started to many times because of my financial situation. The education I received during my time at Howard University was unparalleled and it was all made possible through the generous donations provided by our very own alumni. As a 2015 graduate, I will give back in the future so other students will get to have the same stellar experience I did. I am the most thankful women on earth. Again thank you so much for the new beginning of my life. Sincerely, Alicia Dillard

I am humbled to have been considered and chosen for this specific Donor Scholarship award. I am a senior African Studies major, Spanish minor, originally from Los Angeles, CA and Tucson, AZ. I transferred from El Camino College in Torrance, CA to Howard University Fall 2012. I had completed my first two years at a community college in order to better afford Howard, once my parental units notified me of the lack of financial assistance I would be receiving from them. After turning down several Universities of California, Fordham University, and Spelman College, due to my personal financial situation at 18 years old, I was determined to complete everything within my power to successfully transfer and graduate from Howard University. After changing my major out of Howard’s Dance Arts Department at the completion of my first year, I had made it a personal goal to receive 4.0 GPA every semester within my new department. This decision was made as to acquire as much information, skill, and professionalism as possible, within the short two years I would have in my new department. I am proud to say that despite working as a server nearly full time, as well as continuing my dance training outside of Howard, I have earned a 4.0 GPA my first two semesters as an African Studies major, Spanish minor. I plan on maintaining this achievement this school year. Mere words cannot express my appreciation for being awarded this Donor Scholarship, my senior year at. It is evidence that hard work and perseverance despite unfavorable circumstances, does not go unnoticed or unrewarded. I thank you again for your support in my education at Howard University, and for believing in my success. Sincerely, Aminah Jackson

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your scholarship that I have received. Words cannot express the gratitude that I have for you. I pride myself on working hard, never giving up until I get what I need, but with my current situation, I was close to the point where I felt all hope was lost. I have a part time job, even though it was not advised while in the program, but the little money I made was not enough to take care of my personal needs and my tuition. I started a go fund me account thinking that I could make up the balance through donations, but the turnout on that avenue was not what I expected. I honestly did not know what else I could do in order to clear my balance before graduation. With your help, I am now a graduate from the radiation therapy program. This scholarship I will allow me to be able to pursue my goal of becoming a radiation therapist. From there, after getting a couple of years of working experience, I would like to continue my education, and become a radiation oncologist. My ultimate goal as a radiation oncologist is to open a cancer center in Nigeria. I am well on my way to meeting the goals that I have set out to accomplish with the help of this scholarship. Once again, thank you very much for this scholarship that I have receiving. I only wish that there was another way that I can truly express my appreciation. I can assure you that this scholarship will go to good use and that I will be zealous in the pursuit of my goals. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely,

I am writing to thank you for this donation to Howard University. Without these funds, I will not have had the opportunity to participate in the graduation ceremony, after years of hard-work in the classroom. Your donation has made a huge impact on my life, and I really appreciate your help.

I am an international student, who came to America to seek better education. I always had a passion for economics growing up, and I was excited to advance my education at a prestigious University like Howard University, where I could learn a lot about economics, public policy and advance my knowledge in the field. Coming to Howard University has helped me achieve this, taught me a lot and made me better prepared for the future. With a 3.6 GPA in the Economics masters program, I believe I have learned a lot and I am grateful and excited for what the future has to offer.

With your donation, I have been able to graduate with my peers, and participate in an occasion that most people (myself included) consider to be one of the most important times of their lives. Thank you for your investment, your money has definitely been used to change my life and I am very grateful and honored that I will be graduating from the school in which people like you have been a part of.

Sincerely,
