Dear Howard University Community: Looking ahead, we are soon to share in the great honor of having U.S. President Barack Obama address the University community at Commencement 2016 on May 7. What an extraordinary send-off for the graduating class and their families! What an incomparable way to cap a momentous academic year! The president will come before us as one of his signal acts of his final year in office. We look forward to him sharing his reflections gleaned from nearly eight years in office during a time of rapid and unparalleled change. President Obama becomes the sixth U.S. president to address a Commencement audience at Howard University. We will bestow honorary degrees on him and on three other distinguished Americans during the proceedings. The record of accomplishment that will be on display at Commencement is truly amazing. The University will award more than 1,300 bachelor’s degrees, more than 300 master’s degrees, more than 100 Ph.D.’s, plus 400 professional degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

Finally, let me remind you that some of our seniors remain in jeopardy of missing graduation – not because they are academically deficient but because they lack the wherewithal to fulfill their financial obligations to the University. It’s not too late to help. This final edition of Bison Beat for the semester tells you how you and other members of the Howard family can take part in the “Gift a Senior” program, operated solely to remove the last bar to completing their educational journey. Together, we can move the Bison herd forward. In Truth and Service,

Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA President

AROUND CAMPUS

Gift a Senior We are less than two weeks away from Friday, May 6, a date that looms large on the University’s calendar for two reasons. That day, at 6 p.m., is the deadline for the 231 qualified seniors to settle any outstanding balances so that they can participate in Commencement on May 7. It also is the culmination point for the 2016 Gift a Senior Campaign, designed to assist these seniors in meeting their financial obligations. Our Office of Alumni Relations has made special appeals to Bison graduates and other members of the University community, asking: Will you consider helping a deserving senior graduate in May? The response has been strong, and we are most appreciative of Howard’s alumni and friends who have already made donations. Still, we need your help. For those who have just not gotten around to it and to those who have not considered making a donation to the 2016 Gift a Senior Campaign, this is an urgent request. Consider a gift to support this worthy initiative and remove the last impediment to graduation for some of our deserving seniors. Please know that 100% of your tax-deductible donation will go toward financial clearance. We

PAGE 4 | Bison Beat Monthly Newsletter | April 2016

will work steadily until all 231 students are able to celebrate this milestone with their classmates, enjoying the reward for their hard work, sacrifices and devotion to Howard. We have already heard the financial story of Howard’s graduating students this year. More than 60% are Pell grant eligible, and the 'Expected Family Contribution' for many is less than $100, based on their financial aid applications. We know these students need our help! Where do you fit in? Here is what some have done, and we challenge you to follow suit and help spread the word. Think of five to10 friends who could support this worthy campaign and reach out to them. Then, ask those friends to identify five to10 friends of their own to whom they can make the pitch, and so on. Can you imagine what we can accomplish together for those 231 seniors? There is strength in numbers, and pooling resources will compound our ability to help our fellow Bison graduates-to-be. These students are depending on us. Please help in whatever way you can. Donations to the 2016 Gift a Senior Campaign can made by visiting https:// giving.howard.edu/giftasenior.

Money for Grads – Howard Begins Tuition Rebate Program for Students that Graduate Early or On-Time Last year, Howard announced an important plan, with unanimous support from the Board of Trustees, to freeze tuition for all undergraduate and select graduate programs for the 2015-2016 academic year. This also included the establishment of an incentive offering tuition rebates to graduates who earn their degree early or on-time. This academic year, graduates who qualify will receive the rebate.

EXCELLENCE AT HOWARD

School of Business and Rankin Chapel to Offer Executive Leadership for Ministers Program The School of Business and its partner, the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. have announced the 2016 Advanced Executive Leadership Program for Ministers and Church Leaders. This intensive five-day program will be taught by the School of Business faculty, executive instructors and nationally recognized guest pastors. This comprehensive management certificate program will run from May 16 – May 20.

“Pastors and church leaders are notably called upon to be the preachers, teachers and counselors within their congregations,” said Kim R. Wells, executive director of Executive Education at the Howard University School of Business. “However, the effective management of the church is often the difference between a successful and growing congregation, and one stagnated with inefficiencies, and revolving members.”

Today’s complex church organizations increasingly rely on leaders who are highly competent in business management and fiscal affairs. The Executive Leadership Program for Ministers provides intensive business study of strategic leadership, financial management, economic development, branding and marketing, contemporary legal issues, cross cultural management strategies, social media strategies and succession planning. It includes a week-long team business case competition. Guest lecturers include: Pastor John Jenkins from First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Pastor Floyd Flake of Greater Allen AME Cathedral, Retired Air Force General Frank Anderson, Rev. Michael Kelsey of McLean Bible Church and Rev. Omarosa Manigualt.

The program is designed to be affordable for any pastor or church leader who desires an elite management training experience. The School of Business is offering a reduced registration rate of $699 to support underresourced church leaders who would like to attend. All participants will receive an executive certificate of completion from the School of Business. For registration information or to learn more, call 202.806.1610, or email kim.wells@howard. edu.

Alumna Angel Mills Receives Prestigious Boren Award

Angel Mills has been awarded a Boren Fellowship to study Portuguese in São Paulo, Brazil, during the 2016-17 academic year. Mills received her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from Howard University. She is currently a student at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education where she is earning her Masters of Education in the Intercultural Communication Program.

Howard University Alum is Part of Pulitzer Prize-Winning Team for National Reporting A Howard University alum and adjunct professor, Keith Alexander, is part of a Washington Post team of reporters that was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for their work documenting fatal police shootings of civilians across the nation. The Pulitzer board singled out the Washington Post “for its revelatory initiative in creating and using a national database to illustrate how often and why the police shoot to kill and who the victims are most likely to be.”

The newspaper sought to determine if there was a pattern in the fatal shootings of civilians by police officers after learning that no federal or private agency tracked such information. The data was compiled using real time news reports as well as other public sources. Among the Post’s findings: there were 990 fatal police shootings in 2015 and about 25 percent of those shot had a history of mental illness. The Post reporters produced more than a dozen stories using the data, some of them dispelling myths and defying conventional wisdom about police-citizen interaction.

PAGE 14 | Bison Beat Monthly Newsletter | April 2016

For example, most of those killed by police were white men, but African Americans were at much greater risk of being shot after routine traffic stops than other Americans. After the announcement, Alexander tweeted, “Honored to be a winner of the 2016 #PulitzerPrize for #TheWashingtonPost yearlong investigation on fatal police shootings in 2015.” Alexander is an adjunct professor of journalism in the Howard University School of Communications. He is also a graduate of the School of Communications.
