Dear Howard University Community, A safe haven is defined as a place of refuge or security. Over the last 150 years, Howard University has defined itself as more than “a research intensive, culturally diverse, historically Black University in the nation’s capital that was founded in 1867.” Howard University is a protector of innocent minds, voices and bodies. In light of the nation’s most recent spates of gun violence and, more evidently, the attacks against innocent bodies, Howard University and the voices we represent emphasize that this institution remains essential to solving critical issues that affect our local and global communities and using our legacy of solution-driven problem solving to purify the toxic air around us and cleanse the prejudices within our justice system. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni do not simply permeate the communities that have been under attack. We are a mosaic representation of people who eat, work, play in and are products of these communities. As a result of this connection, I must imagine that the nation’s current social and political climate has induced a range of emotions within each of you.

What Howard University has taught us, more than anything, is how to channel our emotions. Howard University has taught us the importance of equanimity under duress. We have, since 1867, learned how to use our minds, voices and bodies to evoke change. It is imperative that we not only recognize our right to feel in these moments, but that we also recognize our responsibility to identify solutions. Without analyzing the depth of my character, one would not know that I am a father, son or husband. By simply looking at me, one would not identify with the story of a 16-year-old young man who set foot on a journey at Howard University with one goal: to become a surgeon—a goal that has transformed into more than 20 years in a career as a student, teacher, mentor, surgeon, researcher, academician and leader. Nor would one empathize with the individual stories of each student, faculty, staff or alumni who is connected to Howard University—all of whom have a desire to impact their world. It is evident that our communities will not survive or thrive if we return to unjust practices of compartmentalizing who does and does not deserve their basic freedoms simply because

of how they look, pray, or even love. I encourage all of my students, the Howard University community and the nation to continue pressing for progress, freedom, truth and justice. As you continue your summer’s journey of productivity, I charge you to take some time to identify what we can do as individuals and as a collective body to strategically address the systems that are not protecting our freedoms. We must remember, a threat to one person’s freedom—be it civil, religious, economic or the like—is a threat to all of our freedoms. Today, and moving forward, we must be intentional about protecting our safe haven and conscious of the privileges that affect the lenses through which we all view our lives and the lives of those around us.I look forward to another 150 years! Excellence in Truth and Service,

Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA

Vice President Biden Hosts Cancer Moonshoot Initiative at Howard Vice President Joe Biden recently hosted a summit on the Cancer Moonshot Initiative at Howard University. The summit was one of more than 270 events in communities across the U.S. that aimed to double the rate of progress toward a cure for cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care in five years. The summit brought community members together to discuss ways in which cancer affects them, share input about the Moonshot Initiative, generate ideas about how individuals and organizations can better engage in the national effort and create ideas for new collaborations and actions. Supply Chain Management Program at Howard Rises in Rank

PAGE 6 | Bison Beat Monthly Newsletter | July 2016

Howard University’s Undergraduate Supply Chain Management Program was recently ranked 13th in the U.S. as part of the 2016 Gartner Supply Chain research initiative on Supply Chain Management University Degree Programs. “Attaining a top 25 ranking is a testament to the hard work and accomplishments of our program, the student body and the faculty,” according

to James Haddow, director of the Center for Excellence in Supply Chain Management. “A shortage of strong supply chain management talent is one of the most pressing challenges for organizations worldwide.” Howard University’s Business School implemented the Supply Chain Management

Program in 2001. Since its inception, the program has been well received by students and corporate supporters like Dell, GM, DuPont, Ryder, IBM, Deloitte, Alcoa, MWV, Bank of America, United Technologies and others. The supply chain management curriculum represents the MBA program’s commitment to produce

graduates who are equipped to cope with the latest trends in supply chain management.

School of Social Work Celebrates 80th Anniversary The School of Social Work hosted an 80th anniversary luncheon to celebrate social work education at Howard University and to honor the legacy of Dr. Inabel Burns Lindsay, founding dean of the School of Social Work. More than 150 alumni, faculty, friends and students across seven decades attended the kickoff event for the establishment of the Dr. Inabel Burns Lindsay Society. The event raised about $30,000. Mildred “Mit” Joyner (M.S.W. ’74), the inaugural recipient of the Inabel Burns Lindsay Social Work Educator Award, thanked President Wayne A. I. Frederick and Provost Anthony K. Wutoh on their commitment to the visionary leadership of Dr. Sandra Edmonds Crewe.

Joyner provided inspirational remarks that focused on the value of a Howard University Social Work degree and its ability to prepare one to face and conquer challenges. Classmates from the 1950s and 1960s, who studied during Lindsay’s deanship, shared reflections about their unique experiences. Crewe expressed excitement about the Dr. Inabel Burns Lindsay Society, and said that the proceeds from this event and others to follow will support scholarships, fellowships and lectureships. In the next five years, “we would like to establish an endowed Dean Inabel Burns Lindsay chair,” Crewe said.
